The heat capacities of crystalline and liquid n-hexatriacontane were measured with an automatic adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range of 80-370 K. Two solid-to-solid phase transitions at the temperatures of 345.397 and 346.836 K, and a fusion at the temperature of 348.959 K have been observed. The enthalpies and entropies of these phase transitions as well as the chemical purity of the substance were determined on the basis of the heat capacity measurements. Thermal decomposition temperatures of the compound were measured by thermogravimetric analysis. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

By realizing in thin films a tensile stress state, superconductivity of 13 K was introduced into FeTe, a nonsuperconducting parent compound of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, with a transition temperature higher than that of its superconducting isostructural counterpart FeSe. For these tensile stressed films, superconductivity is accompanied by a softening of the first-order magnetic and structural phase transition, and also, the in-plane extension and out-of-plane contraction are universal in all FeTe films independent of the sign of the lattice mismatch, either positive or negative. Moreover, the correlations were found to exist between the transition temperatures and the tetrahedra bond angles in these thin films.

The low-frequency Raman spectrum of n-decylammonium chloride was measured as a function of temperature in the temperature range from 290 to 340K, and the longitudinal acoustical mode vibration band was assigned. The results showed that there are two phase transitions at 313K and 321K, respectively. The phase transition at 313K is mainly induced by change of hydrocarbon chain conformations, while that at 321K is mainly induced by change of order degree of molecular packing. The results suggest low-frequency Raman spectroscopy is a useful probe of structural phase transition for long-chain compounds.

Four kinds of Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) thin films with different Y2O3 content have been prepared on BK7 substrates by electron-beam evaporation method. Structural properties and surface morphology of thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra and scanning probe microscope. Laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) was determined. It was found that crystalline phase and microstructure of YSZ thin films was dependent on Y2O3 molar content. YSZ thin films changed from monoclinic phase to high temperature phase (tetragonal and cubic) with the increase of Y2O3 content. The LIDT of stabilized thin film is more than that of unstabilized thin films. The reason is that ZrO2 material undergoes phase transition during the course of e-beam evaporation resulting in more numbers of defects compared to that of YSZ thin films. These defects act as absorptive center and the original breakdown points. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A kind of hydrogenated diphasic, silicon films has been prepared by a new regime of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) in the region adjacent to the phase transition from amorphous to crystalline state. The photoelectronic and microstructural properties of the films have been investigated by the constant photocurrent method (CPM), Raman scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Our experimental results and corresponding analyses showed that the diphasic films, incorporated with a subtle boron compensation, could gain both the fine photosensitivity and high stability, provided the crystalline fraction (f) was controlled in the range of 0 < f < 0.3. When compared with the conventional hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), the diphasic films are more ordered and robust in the microstructure, and have a less clustered phase in the Si-H bond configurations. By in situ monitoring structural changes with the reflection spectrometer during the colloidal crystallization, we present direct experimental evidence of liquid-bcc-fcc phase transition in crystallization of charged colloidal particles, as a manifestation of the Ostwald's step rule. In addition, the lifetime of the bcc metastable structure in this system decreases significantly with increasing particle volume fraction, offering a possible explanation for "exceptions" to the step rule.

The phase evolution of yttrium oxide and lanthanum oxide doped zirconia (Y2O3-ZrO2 and La2O3-ZrO2, respectively) from their tetragonal to monoclinic phase has been studied using UV Raman spectroscopy, visible Raman spectroscopy and XRD. UV Raman spectroscopy is found to be more sensitive at the surface region while visible Raman spectroscopy and XRD mainly give the bulk information. For Y2O3-ZrO2 and La2O3-ZrO2, the transformation of the bulk phase from the tetragonal to the monoclinic is significantly retarded by the presence of yttrium oxide and lanthanum oxide. However, the tetragonal phase in the surface region is difficult to stabilize, particularly when the stabilizer's content is low. The phase in the surface region can be more effectively stabilized by lanthanum oxide than yttrium oxide even though zirconia seemed to provide more enrichment in the surface region of the La2O3-ZrO2 sample than the Y2O3-ZrO2 sample, based on XPS analysis. The surface structural tension and the enrichment of the ZrO2, component in the surface region of ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-La2O3 might be the reasons for the striking difference between the phase change in the surface region and the bulk. Accordingly, the stabilized tetragonal surface region can significantly prevent the phase transition from developing into the bulk when the stabilizer's content is high.

New series of oxides, La3MMo2O12 (M = In, Ga and Al), have been prepared by the solid-state reaction. The composition and elemental distribution were analyzed by the energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. As determined by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), these compounds have similar crystal structures that can be indexed on a monoclinic cell at room temperature. AC impedance spectra and the DC electrical conductivity measurements in various atmospheres indicate that they are oxide ion conductors with ionic conductivities between 10(-2) and 10(-3) S/cm at 800 degrees C. The conductivity decreases in the order of La3GaMo2O12 > La3AlMo2O12 > La3InMo2O12, implying that the effect of cell volume and polarization associated with In3+, Ga3+ and Al3+ play an important role in the anion transport of these materials. The reversible phase transition was observed in all these compounds as confirmed by the differential thermal analysis (DTA) and dilatometric measurements.

A rectangular structural unit cell of a-Al2O3 is generated from its hexagonal one. For the rectangular structural crystal with a simple interatomic potential [Matsui, Mineral Mag. 58A, 571 (1994)], the relations of lattice constants to homogeneous pressure and temperature are calculated by using Monte-Carlo method at temperature 298K and 0 GPa, respectively. Both numerical results agree with experimental ones fairly well. By comparing pair distribution function, the crystal structure of a-Al2O3 has no phase transition in the range of systematic parameters. Based on the potential model, pressure dependence of isothermal bulk moduli is predicted. Under variation of general strains, which include of external and internal strains, elastic constants of a-Al2O3 in the different homogeneous load are determined. Along with increase of pressure, axial elastic constants increase appreciably, but nonaxial elastic constants are slowly changed.

A constitutive model, based on an (n + 1)-phase mixture of the Mori-Tanaka average theory, has been developed for stress-induced martensitic transformation and reorientation in single crystalline shape memory alloys. Volume fractions of different martensite lattice correspondence variants are chosen as internal variables to describe microstructural evolution. Macroscopic Gibbs free energy for the phase transformation is derived with thermodynamics principles and the ensemble average method of micro-mechanics. The critical condition and the evolution equation are proposed for both the phase transition and reorientation. This model can also simulate interior hysteresis loops during loading/unloading by switching the critical driving forces when an opposite transition takes place.

A detailed observation was made using atomic force microscopy on the two- to three-dimensional (2D-3D) growth mode transition in the molecular-beam epitaxy of InAs/GaAs(001). The evolution of the 3D InAs islands during the 2D-3D mode transition was divided into two successive phases. The first phase may be explained in terms of a critical phenomenon of the second-order phase transition.

Diphasic silicon films (nc-Si/a-Si:H) have been prepared by a new regime of plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition in the region adjacent of phase transition from amorphous to microcrystalline state. Comparing to the conventional amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), the nc-Si/a-Si:H has higher photoconductivity (sigma(ph)), better stability, and a broader light spectral response range in the longer wavelength range. It can be found from Raman spectra that there is a notable improvement in the medium range order. The blue shift for the stretching mode and red shift for the wagging mode in the IR spectra also show the variation of the microstructure. By using this kind of film as intrinsic layer, a p-i-n junction solar cell was prepared with the initial efficiency of 8.51 % and a stabilized efficiency of 8.01% (AM 1.5, 100 mw/cm(2)) at room temperature. C-60 Single crystals grown by a single-temperature-gradient technique were characterized by synchrotron radiation white beam x-ray topography and x-ray double crystal diffraction with Cu K-alpha 1 radiation on conventional x-ray source. The results show that the crystal is rather well crystallized, The x-ray topographies give an evidence of dendritic growth mechanism of C-60 Single crystal, and x-ray double crystal diffraction rocking curve shows that there are mosaic structural defects in the sample. A phase transition st 249+/-1.5% K from a simple cubic to a face centered cubic structure is confirmed by in situ observation of synchrotron radiation white beam x-ray topography with the temperature varing from 230 to 295 K.

For thermal energy storage application, polyurea microcapsules about 2.5 mum in diameter containing phase change material were prepared using interfacial polycondensation method. In the system droplets in microns are first formed by emulsifying an organic phase consisting of a core material ( n-hexadecane) and an oil-soluble reactive monomer, toluene-2, 4-diisocyanate (TDI), in an aqueous phase. By adding water-soluble reactive monomer, diamine, monomers TDI and diamine react with each other at the interface of micelles to become a shell. Ethylenediamine (EDA), 1, 6-hexane diamine (HDA) and their mixture were employed as water-soluble reactive monomers. The effects of diamine type on chemical structure and thermal properties of the microcapsules were investigated by FT-IR and thermal analysis respectively. The infrared spectra indicate that polyurea microcapsules have been successfully synthesized; all the TG thermographs show microcapsules containing n-hexadecane can sustain high temperature about 300 degreesC without broken and the DSC measurements display that all samples possess a moderate heat of phase transition; thermal cyclic tests show that the encapsulated paraffin kept its energy storage capacity even after 50 cycles of operation. The results obtained from experiments show that the encapsulated n-hexadecane possesses a good potential as a thermal energy storage material.
