By introducing the flexible 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (bbi) ligand into the polyoxovanadate system, five novel polyoxoanion-templated architectures based on [As8V14O42](4-) and [V16O38Cl](6-) building blocks were obtained: [M(bbi)(2)](2)[As8V14O42(H2O)] [M = Co (1), Ni (2), and Zn (3)], [Cu(bbi)](4)[As8V14O42(H2O)] (4), and [Cu(bbi)](6)[V16O38Cl] (5). Compounds 1-3 are isostructural, and they exhibit a binodal (4,6)-connected 2D structure with Schlafli symbol (3(4)center dot 4(2))(3(4)center dot 4(4)center dot 5(4)center dot 6(3))(2), in which the polyoxoanion induces a closed four-membered circuit of M-4(bbi)(4). Compound 4 exhibits an interesting 3D framework constructed from tetradentate [As8V14O42](4-) cluster anions and cationic ladderlike double chains. There exists a bigger M-8(bbi)(6)O-2 circuit in 4. The 3D extended structure of 5 is composed of heptadentate [V16O38Cl](6-) anions and flexural cationic chains; the latter consists of six Cu(bbi) segments arranged alternately. It presents the largest 24-membered circuit of M-24(bbi)(24) so far observed made of bbi molecules and transition-metal cations. Investigation of their structural relations shows the important template role of the polyoxoanions and the synergetic interactions among the polyoxoanions, transition-metal ions, and flexible ligand in the assembly process.

In this paper, four new luminescent silver(I) sulfonate complexes with PPh3, namely Ag(L1)(PPh3)(2) (1), Ag(L2)(PPh3)(3) (2), [Ag-2(L3)(PPh3)(4) (H2O)center dot 1.5CH(3)CN center dot 0.5H(2)O (3) and [Ag-4(L4)(PPh3)(10)]center dot 8H(2)O (4), where L1=p-toluenesulfonate, L2=1-naphthalenesulfonate, L3=3-carboxylate-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, L4=1, 3, 6, 8-pyrenetetrasulfonatc and PPh3=triphenylphosphine, have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. Compounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 adopt discrete structures rather than polymeric structures. Compounds I and 2 show mononuclear structures while 3 and 4 are dinuclear and tetranuclear molecules, respectively. Moreover the numbers of PPh3 molecules coordinating to one silver center are two or three. The photoluminescent properties of 1, 2 and 3 are discussed.

Copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide was carried out employing (RC6H4COO)(3)Y/glycerin/ZnEt2 (R = -H, -CH3, NO2, -OH) ternary catalyst systems. The feature of yttrium carboxylates (ligand, substituent and its position on the aromatic ring) is of great importance in the final copolymerization. Appropriate design of substituent and position of the ligand in benzoate-based yttrium complex can adjust the microstructure of aliphatic polycarbonate in a moderate degree, where the head-to-tail linkage in the copolymer is adjustable from 68.4 to 75.4%. The steric factor of the ligand in the yttrium complex is crucial for the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer, probably due to the fact that the substituent at 2 and 4-position would disturb the coordination or insertion of the monomer, lead the copolymer with broad molecular distribution. Based on the study of ultraviolet-visible spectra of the ternary catalyst in various solvents, it seems that the absorption band at 240-255 nm be closely related to the active species of the rare earth ternary catalysts.

The present paper covers the syntheses of 1,8-adipoylamido-bis(1,10-phenanthroline-5-yl)(bphaa) and its binuclear complex {[(bpy)(2)Ru](2)(bphaa)} (PF6)(4), where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine. The two novel compounds were confirmed by means of elemental analysis, IR, and LD-MS and H-1 NMR, and H-1 NMR spectra were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY. chemical behavior of the binuclear Ru (I) complex was obtained using cyclic and voltammetry. Its photophysical property was investigated by electronic absorption, excitation and emission spectra.

A novel europium(III) coordination polymer with a new double betaine derivative, {[Eu(L')(NO3)(H2O)(3)](NO3)(2). 3.5H(2)O}(n) (L-1 = 1,3-bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) has been synthesized and its structure determined. Its luminescence properties have also been studied. The title metal carboxylate coordination polymer contains centrosymmetric dimeric units in which each pair of metal ions is linked by a pair of syn-anti carboxylato-O,O' groups, and each pair of such dimeric units is bridged by the backbones of L-1 ligands to form infinite double chains in the b direction. These metal carboxylate chains are further cross-linked by hydrogen bonds among both coordinated and discrete nitrate anions, aqua ligands and lattice water molecules to form a three-dimensional network. Luminescent data show that the L-1 ligand is a good energy donor and the complex has a relatively long luminescent lifetime.

The reaction of [Cp*IrCl2](2) with dilithium 1,2-orthocarborane-1,2-diselenolate 3 leads to the green 16-electron diselenolene complex [Cp*Ir{Se2C2(B10H10)}] (4) which takes up two-electron ligands such as trimethylphosphane to give the 18-electron diselenolate derivative [Cp*Ir(PMe3)-{Se2C2(B10H10)}] (5). The molecular structures of 4 and 5 were determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The Se-77-nuclear shielding in 4 is lower by almost 500 ppm relative to that in 5.

The complex, K2.5Na2NH4[Mo2O2S2(cit)(2)]. 5H(2)O (1), was obtained by crystallization from a solution of (NH4)(2)MoS4, potassium citrate (K(3)cit) and hydroxyl sodium in methanol and water under an atmosphere of pure nitrogen at ambient temperature. The crystals are triclinic, space group
, a = 7.376 (3)Angstrom, b = 14.620 (2) Angstrom, c = 14.661 (1) Angstrom, alpha = 71.10 (1)degrees, beta = 81.77 (1)degrees, gamma = 78.27(2)degrees, R = 0.0584 for 2545 observed (I > 2 sigma (I)) reflections. Single crystal structure analysis reveals that citrate ligand coordinated to molybdenum atom through two carboxylato oxygens and one deprotonated hydroxyl oxygen together with two bridging sulfur atoms and a terminal oxygen atom completes distorted coordination octahedron around each molybdenum atom. Principal dimensions are: Mo = O-t, 1.707 Angstrom (av); Mo-S-b, 2.341 Angstrom (av); Mo-O-(hydroxyl), 2.021 Angstrom (av); Mo-O(alpha-carboxyl), 2.1290 Angstrom (av) and Mo-O(beta-carboxyl), 2.268(av) Angstrom. IR spectrum is in agreement with the structure.

The crystal structure of a novel macrocyclic ligand complex of Pr-III, C112H178O52N8S4Pr2, [Pr2L2(HL)(2)(H2O)(6)]. 22H(2)O is reported. The macrocyclic ligand has pendant acetic acid through which the ligand is coordinated to the Pr-III ion. For the dimeric unit, [Pr2L2(HL)(2)(H2O)(6)], two Pr-III ions are connected by two bridging-chelating carboxyl groups and two bridging carboxyl groups of the ligands, and each Pr-III ion is also bonded to a unidentate carboxyl group of the ligand and three water molecules. The dimeric units are bridged by four ligands through their carboxyl groups to form an infinite one-dimensional chain. The coordination number of the Pr-III ion is nine, with a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic configuration. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
