Epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) developed in this Institute is a candidate matrix resin for polymer composites as structural materials. Cure cycles for this reaction system were simulated according to the previously established processing model. It is found that for the E-PEK system, the curing process is best completed by a stepwise cure cycle comprising two isothermal processes at different temperatures, T-1 and T-2. The cure cycles over a wide range of processing parameters simulated, based on the established processing model, indicate that the processing window is width-adjustable. Analysis of the mechanical properties of the composite sheets showed that the simulated cure cycles are acceptable and reliable. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The morphologies and mechanical properties of epoxy resins toughened by hydroxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (HTBN) and cured with hexahydrophthalic anhydride were studied, The results show that the level of HTBN in epoxy resin, content of acrylonitrile in HTBN and curing temperature influence the morphology and then influence the mechanical properties of cured epoxy resin.

Chemorheology and corresponding models for an epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) system were investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a cone-and-plate rheometer. For this system, the reported four-parameter chemorheological model and modified WLF chemorheological model can only be used in an isothermal or nonisothermal process, respectively. In order to predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle actually used, a new model based on the combination of the four-parameter model and the modified WLF model was developed. The combined model can predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle more accurately than the above two models. In order to simplify the establishment of this model, a new five-parameter chemorheological model was then developed. The parameters in this five-parameter model can be determined through very few rheology and DSC experiments. This model is practicable to describe the resin viscosity variation for isothermal, nonisothermal, or stepwise temperature cure cycles accurately. The five-parameter chemorheological model has also successfully been used in the E-PEK systems with two other curing agents, i.e., the diamine curing agent with the addition of a boron trifluride monoethylamine (BF3-MEA) accelerator and an anhydride curing agent (hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride). The catalytic mechanisms of triphenyl bismuth (TPB), dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) and their combination have been studied in a model polyurethane reaction system consisting of copolyether (tetrahydrofuran-ethyleneoxide) and N-100; NMR spectroscopy was used to detect the associations between reactants and catalysts. A relatively stable complex was shown to be formed between hydroxyl and isocyanate; the catalysts showed different effects on the isocyanate-hydroxyl complex, therefore resulting in different curing characteristics. The formation of hydrogen bonding between the complexed hydroxyl and other hydroxyl or the resulting urethane provided an ''auto-catalysis'' to urethane formation. DBTDL destroyed the isocyanate-hydroxyl complex before catalyzing the reaction through the formation of a ternary complex, whereas TPB was able to activate the isocyanate-hydroxyl complex directly to form urethane. The reaction catalyzed by the combination of TPB and DBTDL gained advantages from the multiple catalytic entities, i.e., TPB, DBTDL, and a TPB-DBTDL complex. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The polycrystalline powder of para- and meta-dimethyl ester of pyromellitic acid (PMDE) have been prepared by fractional crystallization, and their crystal structures have been determined by Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD). Both p-PMDE and m-PMDE was found to be orthorhombic crystal system, and their unit cell parameters a = 0.840 nm, b = 0.707 nm, c = 1.136 nm and a = 1.032 nm; b = 0.835 nm, c = 0.714 nm, respectively. Space group all belongs to P-mmm. p-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.388 g . cm(-3), while m-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.522 g . cm(-3). Indices of crystal diffraction peaks are also detailed in the present work. The difference in crystal structures between p-PMDE and m-PMDE has thus been used to explain the curing behavior of isomerically pyromellitic dianhydride-based poly(amic ester)s.

In order to raise the room temperature ionic conductivity and improve the mechanical strength of a PEO-based polymer electrolyte, a non-crystalline two-component epoxy network was synthesized by curing diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol (DGEPEG) with triglycidyl ether of glycerol (TGEG) in the presence of LiClO4 salt, which acts in this system as both a ring opening catalyst and a source of ionic carrier. The structure of the precursors, the curing process and the cured films have been characterized by C-13 NMR, IR, DSC and ionic conductivity measurement techniques. The electrolyte system exhibits an ionic conductivity as high as similar to 10(-5) S/cm at 25 degrees C and is mechanically self-supportable. The dependence of ionic conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature, salt content, MW of PEG segment in DGEPEG and the proportion of DGEPEG in DGEPEG/TGEG ratio.

The properties of miscible phenolphthalein poly(ether ether ketone)/phenoxy (PEK-C/phenoxy) blends have been measured by dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile testing. The blends were found to have single glass transition temperatures (T(g)) that vary continuously with composition. The tensile moduli exhibit positive deviations from simple additivity. Marked positive deviations were also observed for tensile strength. The tensile strengths of the 90/10 and 75/25 PEK-C/phenoxy blends are higher than those of both the pure components. Embrittlement, or transition from the brittle to the ductile mode of failure, occurs in the composition range of 50-25 wt% PEK-C. These observations suggest that mixing on the segmental level has occurred and that there is enough interaction between the components to decrease its internal mobility significantly. PEK-C was also found to be miscible with the epoxy monomer, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), as shown by the existence of a single glass transition temperature (T(g)) within the whole composition range. Miscibility between PEK-C and DGEBA could be considered to be due mainly to entropy. However, PEK-C was judged to be immiscible with the diaminodiphenylmethane-curved epoxy resin (DDM-cured ER). It was observed that the PEK-C/ER blends have two T(g), which remain invariant with composition and are almost the same as those of the pure components, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the PEK-C/ER blends have a two-phase structure. The different miscibility with PEK-C between DGEBA and the DDM-cured ER is considered to be due to the dramatic change in the chemical and physical nature of ER after curing.

Through an acclimation period of 10 days, compared to white light, the maximal net photosynthetic rates were significantly higher for gametophytes of Undaria pinnatifida cultivated under blue light (400-500 nm), and were lower under red light (600-700 nm). Chlorophyll c and the carotenoid content of gametophytes were similar under blue light and red light but were much lower under white light. The growth rate of female gametophytes under blue light was higher than that under other lights, and the growth rate of male gametophytes showed little variation with respect to blue and white light. Male and female gametophytes were mixed together to form sporophytes under white, blue and red light. After approximately 5 days, 50% gametophytes became fertile under blue and white light, but remained vegetative under red light after 10 days.

Glass eels of the temperate anguillid species, Anguilla japonica, clearly showed a nocturnal activity rhythm under laboratory conditions. Light-dark cycle was a determinant factor affecting their photonegative behavior, nocturnal locomotor activity, and feeding behavior. Under natural light conditions, glass eels remained in shelters with little daytime feeding, but came out to forage during darkness. They moved and foraged actively in the following dark, and then their activity gradually declined possibly because of food satiation. They finally buried in the sand or stayed in tubes immediately after the lights came on. Under constant light, glass eels often came out of the shelters to forage in the lights but spent little time moving outside the shelters (e.g. swimming or crawling on the sand). Glass eels took shelter to avoid light and preferred tubes to sand for shelter possibly because tubes were much easier for them to take refuge in than sand. Feeding and locomotor activities of the glass eels were nocturnal and well synchronized. They appeared to depend on olfaction rather than vision to detect and capture prey in darkness. Feeding was the driving force for glass eels to come out of sand under constant light. However, in the dark, some glass eels swam or crept actively on sand even when they were fully fed. The lunar cycles of activity rhythms of glass eels that have been observed in some estuarine areas were not detected under these laboratory conditions.

Under artificial LD cycles (6, 12, 18 L), the elvers of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, showed a 24 h cycle of locomotor activity rhythm being most active at light transitions: the eels' activity rose to a primary peak after lights-off, followed by a quiescent period during which they buried into the shelters or lying motionlessly on sand for most of the time, and then reached a secondary peak before lights-on. Elvers could resynchronize their activity rhythm with a new photo cycle within 4 d. Moreover, their activity level at dark phase significantly increased as the light period was prolonged: higher activity levels during shorter dark period. However, the elvers did not display clearly the existence of a circadian rhythm under constant light or dark conditions. The timing of daily activity rhythm evidenced in the Japanese eels may occur through the action of the LD cycles with a weak participation of an endogenous circadian system. In all the LD cycles, over 99% of the activity occurred in the dark phase, indicating that the eels were always nocturnally active no matter what time of day it might be. Under 12 L conditions, the eels' activity level and the time outside sand were significantly elevated both at light and dark phases as temperature increased from 10 similar to 15 to 20 similar to 25 degrees C. The activity rhythm pattern (i.e., two peaks occurring around light transitions) did not apparently change among temperatures. However, in contrast with the primary activity peaks immediately after lights-off at 20 and 25 degrees C, the timing of the primary peaks at 10 and 15 degrees C showed a latency of a few hours following lights-off, indicating the inhibiting effect of low temperature on the eels' activity.

General expressions used for extracting the orientation and alignment parameters of a symmetric top molecule from laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) intensity are derived by employing the density matrix approach. The molecular orientation and alignment are described by molecular state multipoles. Excitation and detection are circularly and linearly polarized lights, respectively. In general cases, the LIF intensity is a complex function of the initial molecular state multipoles, the dynamic factors and the excitation-detection geometrical factors. It contains a population, ten orientation and fourteen alignment multipoles. The problem of how to extract the initial molecular state multipoles from the resolved LIF intensity is discussed.

That relapse still exists even after prolonged withdrawal is a difficult issue in the medical cure of drug addiction. Neuro-adaptation induced by prolonged exposure to addictive drugs is the neural mechanisms of both compulsive drug seeking and relapse.Neuro-adaptation caused by addictive drugs increases the individuals’ response to drugs and on the other hand, it reduces the response to natural reward in withdrawn individuals. There must be common neural mechanisms between the co-existing phenomena, and there must also be unique neural mechanisms in the drugs. To reveal the neuro-adaptation arising in the process from random, controllable drug-use to uncontrollable compulsive drug seeking is of great significance both theoretically and practically.Based on the above hypothesis, in order to reveal the function of alpha adrenergic receptor in compulsive drug-seeking motivation during the process of drug addiction, using sensitization of morphine-induced psychomotor activity as behavioral model, through the method of behavioral pharmacology, the neural mechanisms of alpha adrenergic receptor’s involvement in the process of addiction has been studied. The adjustment function caused by alpha receptors in medial prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens to morphine-induced psychomotor activity has been compared in the period of first use of drugs and in repetitive-use period. Furthermore, the effect on novelty seeking caused by alpha-receptors in relevant brain areas has also been compared. Major results are as follow: 1 After prolonged morphine exposure, rats’ response to morphine-induced psychomotor activity is strengthened and response to novel object induced reward weakened. 2 Injection of prazosin in medial prefrontal cortex will block morphine-induced psychomotor activity of naïve rats, however, it will not block that of morphine-withdrawn rats, but it will block the novelty seeking behavior of morphine-withdrawn rats. 3 Injection of clonidine in medial prefrontal cortex will block morphine-induced psychomotor effect of both naïve rats and morphine-withdrawn rats, and will block the novelty seeking behavior of morphine-withdrawn rats. 4 Injection of prazosin in nucleus accumbens will not affect the morphine-induced psychomotor effect of either naïve rats or morphine-withdrawn rats, nor will it affect the novelty seeking behavior of morphine-withdrawn rats. 5 Injection of clonidine in nucleus accumbens will block morphine-induced psychomotor effect of naïve rats, however, it will not block that of morphine-withdrawn rats, nor will it affect the novelty seeking behavior of morphine-withdrawn rats. These results show: 1 The weakening of the function of alpha1 receptors in medial prefrontal cortex and alpha2 receptors in nucleus accumbens caused by repetitive exposure to morphine is probably the cause of compulsive drug-seeking activity. 2 Blocking alpha1 receptors in medial prefrontal cortex accelerates the loss of interest in natural reward after morphine withdrawal. 3 Blocking alpha2 receptors in medial prefrontal cortex not only restrains drug-seeking motivation, but also blocks the individual’s seeking motivation for novelty stimulus, which suggests that, while selecting medicine for curing addiction, it should be considered to reduce the influence on natural reward as much as possible and to avoid major side-effect.

As the foundation of other human resource practices, job analysis plays an essential role in HR management. Exploring sources of variance in job analysis ratings given by incumbents from the same job is of much significance to HRM practices. It can also shed lights on employee motivation in organizations. But previous studies in job analysis field have usually been conducted at individual level and take variance in job analysis ratings given by incumbents of the same job as error or bias. This dissertation takes the position that the variance may be meaningful based on role theory and other relevant theories. It first reviewed pervious studies on factors which may influence job analysis ratings provided by incumbents of the same job, and then investigated individual, interpersonal and organizational level variables which may exert impacts on these job analysis ratings, using multilevel data from 8 jobs of 1124 incumbents. The major findings are as follows: 1) Level of job performance and job attitudes affect incumbents’ job analysis ratings by incumbents of the same job at individual level. Specifically, incumbents with high level of job performance rated their job require higher levels of technical skills (power plant designers), and regarded information processing activities as more important to their job (book editors). Regarding the effects of job attitudes, incumbents of the four jobs with high level of job satisfaction gave higher importance and level ratings on organizational and cognitive skills, as well as higher level ratings on technical skills. Further, incumbents with higher affective commitment provided higher importance and level ratings of cognitive skills. Lastly, more involved job incumbents perceived organizational skills and cognitive skills as more important, and required at higher levels, for their job. 2) Leader-Member Exchange and goal structure also have effects on job analysis ratings by incumbents of the same job at interpersonal level. In good quality LMX relationship, news reporters rated decision-making activities and interpersonal activities as more important to their job. On the other side, when book editors structured their goals as cooperative with others’, they provided higher importance ratings on reasoning and interpersonal skills, and related personality requirements, as well as higher level ratings on reasoning abilities. 3) Worker requirements for the identical job are distinct from one organization to another. Specifically, there were between-organization differences in achievement orientation and conscientiousness related personality requirements. In addition, two dimensions of organizational culture, achievement-oriented culture and integrity-oriented culture in particular, were significantly associated with importance ratings of achievement orientation and conscientiousness related personality requirements respectively. Furthermore, achievement-oriented culture both directly and indirect (through job involvement) influenced achievement orientation related personality requirements. The results indicate that variation in job analysis ratings provided by incumbents of the same job may be meaningful. Future job analysis studies and practices should consider the impacts of these individual, interpersonal and organizational level factors on job analysis information. The results also have important implications for employee motivation concerning how organizational demands can be transformed into specific job and worker requirements.
