The influence of molecular topology on the structural and dynamic properties of polymer chain in solution with ring structure, three-arm branched structure, and linear structure are studied by molecular dynamics simulation. At the same degree of polymerization (N), the ring-shaped chain possesses the smallest size and largest diffusion coefficient. With increasing N, the difference of the radii of gyration between the three types of polymer chains increases, whereas the difference of the diffusion coefficients among them decreases. However, the influence of the molecular topology on the static and the dynamic scaling exponents is small. The static scaling exponents decrease slightly, and the dynamic scaling exponents increase slightly, when the topology of the polymer chain is changed from linear to ring-shaped or three-arm branched architecture. The dynamics of these three types of polymer chain in solution is Zimm-like according to the dynamic scaling exponents and the dynamic structure factors.

Supramolecular organized multilayers were constructed by multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with ferrocene-derivatized poly(allylamine) redox polymer and glucose oxidase by electrostatic self-assembly. From the analysis of voltammetric signals and fluorescence results, a linear increment of the coverage of enzyme per bilayer was estimated, which demonstrated that the multilayer is constructed in a spatially ordered manner. The cyclic voltammograms obtained from the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes coated by the (Fc-PAH@CNT/GOx)(n) multilayers revealed that bioelectrocatalytic response is directly correlated to the number of deposited bilayers; that is, the sensitivity is tunable by controlling the number of bilayers associated with ITO electrodes. The incorporation of redox-polymer-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT) into enzyme films resulted in a 6-10-fold increase in the glucose electrocatalytic current; the bimolecular rate constant of FADH(2) oxidation (wiring efficiency) was increased up to 12-fold. Impedance spectroscopy data have yielded the electron diffusion coefficient (D-e) of this nanostructure to be over 10(-8) cm(2) s(-1), which is typically higher than those systems without CNT by at least a factor of 10, indicating that electron transport in the new supramolecular architecture was enhanced by communication of the redox active site of enzyme, redox polymer, and CNT.

As a green process, electrochemistry in aqueous solution without a supporting electrolyte has been described based on a simple polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL)-modified electrode. The studied PFIL material combines features of ionic liquids and traditional polyelectrolytes. The ionic liquid part provides a high ionic conductivity and affinity to many different compounds. The polyelectrolyte part has a good stability in aqueous solution and a capability of being immobilized on different substrates. The electrochemical properties of such a PFIL-modified electrode assembly in a supporting electrolyte-free solution have been investigated by using an electrically neutral electroactive species, hydroquinone ( HQ) as the model compound. The partition coefficient and diffusion coefficient of HQ in the PFIL film were calculated to be 0.346 and 4.74 X 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1), respectively. Electrochemistry in PFIL is similar to electrochemistry in a solution of traditional supporting electrolytes, except that the electrochemical reaction takes place in a thin film on the surface of the electrode. PFILs are easily immobilized on solid substrates, are inexpensive and electrochemically stable. A PFIL-modified electrode assembly is successfully used in the flow analysis of HQ by amperometric detection in solution without a supporting electrolyte.

In this work, a polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL) was firstly incorporated into a sol-gel organic-inorganic hybrid material (PFIL/sol-gel). This new composite material was used to immobilize glucose oxidase on a glassy carbon electrode. An enhanced current response towards glucose was obtained, relative to a control case without PFIL. In addition, chronoamperometry showed that electroactive mediators diffused at a rate 10 times higher in the apparent diffusion coefficient in PFIL-containing matrices. These findings suggest a potential application in bioelectroanalytical chemistry.

The solvent extraction of La3+ from hydrochloric acid solutions was investigated using his (2, 4, 4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302, HL) as an extractant. The effect of equilibrium of aqueous acidity on extraction of La3+ using Cyanex 302 In different diluents was discussed. The effects of extractant concentration and chloride ion on the extraction reaction were also studied. Stoichiometry of the extraction reactions and the nature of metal complexes formed were determined using slope analysis technique and IR measurement.

The poisonous intermediate of methanol oxidation on a Pt electrode was validated to be COad by electrochemical method. An approximate treatment to bimolecular elementary reactions on an electrode was advanced and then was applied to the stripping normal pulse voltammetry (NPV) for complex multistep multielectron transfer processes on plane electrodes to study the kinetics of completely irreversible process Of COad oxidation to CO2. The kinetic parameters for this process, such as standard rate constant (0) and anodic transfer coefficient (alpha) for this irreversible heterogeneous electron-transfer process at electrode/solution interface and apparent diffusion coefficient (D-app) for charge-transfer process within the monolayer of COad on electrode surface, were obtained with stripping NPV method. The effect of the approximate treatment on the kinetic parameters was also analyzed.

Kinetic and electrochemical properties of icosahedral quasicrystalline Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 alloy powder as negative electrode material of Ni-MH battery have been investigated at different temperatures. The calculated results show that the apparent activation enthalpy of the charge-transfer reaction is 43.89 kJ mol(-1), and the activation energy of hydrogen diffusion is 21.03 kJ mol(-1). The exchange current density and the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in the bulky electrode increase with increasing temperature, indicating that increasing temperature is beneficial to charge-transfer reaction and hydrogen diffusion. As a result, the maximum discharge capacity, activation property and high-rate dischargeability are greatly improved with increasing temperature. However, the charge retention and the cycling stability degrade with the increase of the temperature.

The transfer of sodium and potassium ions facilitated by dibenzo-15-crown-5 (DB15C5) has been studied at the micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (water/DCE) interface supported at the tip of a micropipette. Cyclic volt-ammetric measurements were performed in two limiting conditions: the bulk concentration of Na+ or K+ in the aqueous phase is much higher than that of DB15C5 in the organic phase (DB15C5 diffusion controlled process) and the reverse condition (metal ion diffusion controlled process). The mechanisms of the facilitated Na+ transfer by DB15C5 are both transfer by interfacial complexation (TIC) with 1 : 1 stoichiometry under these two conditions, and the corresponding association constants were determined at log beta(1) = 8.97 +/- 0.05 or log beta(1) = 8.63 +/- 0.03. However, the transfers of K+ facilitated by DB15C5 show different behavior. In the former case it is a TIC process and its stoichiometry is 1 : 2, whereas in the latter case two peaks during the forward scan were observed, the first of which was confirmed as the formation of K (DB15C5)(2) at the interface by a TIC mechanism, while the second one may be another TIC process with 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the more positive potential. The relevant association constants calculated for the complexed ion, K+(DB15C5)(2), in the organic phase in two cases, logbeta(2), are 13.64 +/- 0.03 and 11.34 +/- 0.24, respectively.

The anion of MeO2CCH2CH2SnCl4 - was obtained by decomposing the yellow solution of MeO2CCH2CH2SnCl3.(2-OHC6H4CH=NC6H5) by standing for 15 days, which is the product of 3-methoxy-carbonylethyltin trichlorides with Schiff base (2-OHC6H4CH=NC6H5). The title compound was characterized by elemental analysis, IR. H-1 NMR,C-13 NMR and X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal of the title compound belongs to orthorhombic system, space group P2cn, a=7.852(2), b=12.236(1),c=16.952(4)Adegrees, V=1628.7 Angstrom(3), Z=4, D-c=1.79g/cm(3) F(000)=860, mu=22.2cm(-1), R=0.0449, Rw=0.0382. The title compound exists as a discrete molecule, and the tin atom attains a distorted octahedral geometry via the coordination of intramolecular carbonyl oxygen and chloride ion. The coordination number of tin atom is 6.

A stable lipid cast film was made by casting a lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. We imbedded a new mediator norepinephrine into this lipid cast film, which was considered as a biological membrane model. Through electro catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid by this system, the anodic overpotential was reduced by about 250 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of norepinephrine in the cast film was controlled by diffusion. The obtained diffusion coefficient of ascorbic acid was 1.87 x 10(-5) cm 2 s(-1). The catalytic current increased linearly with the concentration of ascorbic acid in the range from 0.5 to 10 mM. Using cyclic voltammetry, we obtained two peaks for ascorbic acid and uric acid in the same solution. The separation between the two peaks is about 147 mV. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a polyethersulfone (PES) chain are carried out in the amorphous state by using the Dreiding 2.21 force field at four temperatures. Two types of molecular motion, i.e, rotations of phenylene rings and torsions of large segments containing two oxygen atoms, two sulfur atoms, and five phenylene rings on the backbone, are simulated. The modeling results show that the successive phenylene rings should be in-phase cooperative rotations, whereas the successive large segments should be out-of-phase cooperative torsions. By calculating the diffusion coefficient for the phenylene ring rotations, it is found that this rotation contributes to the beta -transition of PES.

Stable lipid film was made by casting lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. This model of a biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by dopamine. After this electrode had been immersed in dopamine solution for 10 h, it was found that some dopamine had been incorporated in the film. The cyclic voltammogram was obtained for the oxidation of 2.0 X 10(-3) mol 1(-1) NADH with dopamine incorporated in the films. All electrochemical experiments were performed in 0.005 mol 1(-1) phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 0.1 mol 1(-1) NaCl without oxygen. The oxidation current increased gradually with successive sweeps and reached steady state. It was a different phenomenon from previous results. The anodic overpotential was reduced by about 130 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The diffusion coefficient for 2.0 X 10(-3) mol 1(-1) NADH was 6.7 X 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Selectivity coefficient measurement has been performed for K+,Ni2+,Fe3+ with Nafion 117 perfluorosulfonate polymer as-received forms. The results show that a linear Nernst response is exhibited for H+,K+,Pb2+,Ni2+,Co2+,Fe3+, and the ion selectivity coefficient of Nafion membrane for KC is better than Ni2+ and Fe3+.

The steady state voltammogram at a microdisk electrode is used to measure the diffusion coefficient and standard heterogeneous rate constant (k(s)) of ferrocene in polyelectrolyte PEG + LiClO4. The k(s) obtained is smaller in polyelectrolyte than in liquid medium. It is proposed that the polymer solvent electron transfer dynamics are affected by the relaxation rates of the ether dipole sites on the polymer chains, which are in turn constrained by the rates of polymer chain segment, or local structure, relaxations. The dependence of k(s) on temperature is observed. The k(s) increases with increasing temperature.

Two unfractionated samples of phenolphthalein poly( aryl ether sulfone) (PES-C) were characterized in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C by applying a recently developed laser light-scattering (LLS) procedure. The Laplace inversion of precisely measured intensity-intensity time correlation function lead us first to an estimate of the characteristic line-width distribution G(Gamma) and then to the translational diffusion coefficient distribution G(D). A combination of static and dynamic LLS results enabled us to determine D = (2.69 x 10(-4))M(-0.553), which agrees with the calibration of D = (2.45 x 10(-4))M(-0.55) previously established by a set of narrowly distributed PES-C samples. Using this newly obtained scaling between D and M, we were able to convert G(D) into a differential weight distribution f(w)(M) for the two PES-C samples. The weight-average molecular weights calculated from f(w)(M) are comparable to that obtained directly from static LLS. Our results showed that using two broadly distributed samples instead of a set of narrowly distributed samples have provided not only similar final results, but also a more practical method for the PES-C characterization.
