Tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)) ion transfer across micro-liquid/liquid interface has been studied with cyclic voltammetric measurements. The results showed that voltammetric responses of the currents obtained were peak and steady-state for TEA(+) transfer from inside and outside of the micropipette when the radius was bigger than 3 mum. However, the currents were pseudo-steady-state when the micropipette diameters were less than 3 mum. The values of i(p) decreased with decreasing concentration of TEA(+). Peak current was proportional to the square root of the scan rate and it obeyed a Randles-Sevcik type relationship. The mechanism of mass transport across a liquid/ liquid microinterface for TEA(+) system was aslo discussed.

The sodium ion transfer across the micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by a novel ionophore, liquid crystal crown ether was studied systematically. The sodium ion transfer facilitated by LCCE is controlled by diffusion studied by cyclic voltammetry. The diffusion coefficient of LCCE in 1,2-dichloroethane was calculated to be equal to (2.61 +/- 0.12) X 10(-6) cm(2)/s and the stability constant of the complex between Na+ and LCCE was determined as lg beta (o) = 5.7 in 1,2-dichloroethane.

Ferricyanide anion has usually been used as a marker of ion-channel sensors. In this work we first found that ferricyanide, itself, can act as a stimulus to regulate the permeability of sBLM prepared from didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (a kind of synthetic lipid) on a GC electrode. We used cyclic voltammetry and a.c. impedance to investigate this phenomenon. The interaction between sBLM and ferricyanide concerns time. Furthermore, we developed a sensor for ferricyanide anion. The ion-channel sensor is highly sensitive. It can detect ferricyanide concentration as low as 5 muM.

The ion-molecule reactions of disubstituted benzenes under chemical ionization conditions with acetyl chloride as reagent gas were examined, and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions (mostly proton and acetyl ion adducts) were studied by collision-induced dissociation. Electron-releasing substituents favored the adduct reactions, and electron-withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituting groups had an effect on the relative abundances of the adduct ions. Several examples of the ortho effect were observed. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ions formed by ortho-benzenediamine with the acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amines in the condensed phase. As a kind of supported bilayer lipid membranes, hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM) was applied to the interaction between Ca2+ and lipid for the first time. By using Fe(CN)(6)(3-) as a probe, we found that Ca2+ could induce the ion channel of HBM to be in open state. STM images study proved this phenomenon.

Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique was used to measure the ion transfer in redox processes in electroactive organic thin films, such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) (4-pyridyl hydroquinone, abbr. 4PHQ), multilayer based on SAM and conducting polymer film (here poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), abbr. PEDOT). A mechanism of mixed ion transfer is developed and presented. Analysis of mixed ion transfer during redox processes successfully elucidates the deviation of oscillation frequency of the quartz crystal from theoretical expectation.

In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to make agar-gel microelectrodes by filling micropipettes. These microelectrodes were used to study K+ transfer across the agar-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), and the transfer of tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)). The results observed were similar to those obtained at micro-liquid \ liquid interfaces. The effect of various amounts of agar in the aqueous phase was optimized and 3% agar was chosen based on the potential window and solidification time. The different shapes of micro-agar-gel electrodes were prepared in a similar way. The fabricated agar-gel microelectrodes obey the classical micro-disk steady-state current equation, which is different from the behavior of a normal micropipette filled with aqueous solution without silanization. The effect of metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Ag+) cationization on collision-induced dissociation of ginsenosides was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry combined with multi-stage mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn). The fragments of sodiated and lithiated molecules give valuable structural information regarding the nature of the aglycone and the sequence and linkage information of sugar moieties. However, the number and relative abundances of fragment ions from lithiated ginsenosides are significantly greater than for the sodiated species, The K+ adducts undergo glycosidic cleavages and very limited cross-ring reactions. The silver ion adducts fragment mainly through glycosidic cleavages. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A four-level model of P-6(7/2) excited state of Eu2+ ion in KMgF3: Eu2+ has been proposed. The decay profiles of the P-6(7/2) excited sstate of Eu2+ are two exponential and the physical implication of each term in the fit equation responsible for the model is interpreted. The data obtained spectroscopically are in good agreement with the fit results.

The fragmentation properties of the product ions [M + 1](+), [M + 2](+) and [M + 3](+) formed by ion-molecule reaction of four cyclopropane derivatives with the ion system of CD3OD were investigated by using collision-induced dissocation technique. The experiment results indicated that the product ions were produced via the H/D exchange reaction between reactants and reactive reagent ions of CD3OD. There are two exchangable hydrogen atoms on the ring of compounds 1 and 2, and only one for compound 3 and 4.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O=CH2](+) and the 1-hydroxyethyl ion [CH3CH=OH](+) generated under the self-chemical-ionization (self-CI) conditions of alkyl methyl ethers and primary alcohols were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct ions [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecules [C60H](+) were observed as the major products of C-60 with the plasma of alkyl methyl ethers. On the contrary, the reactions of C-60 With the plasmas of primary alcohols produced few corresponding adduct ions. The AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations were carried out on 14 possible structures. The calculated results showed that the most stable structure among the possible isomers of [C60C2H5O](+) is the [3+2] cycloadduct. According to experimental and theoretical results, the pathway for the formation of the adduct was presented.

The adsorbed kinetics, proton transportation in electrochemical redox process of 4-pyridyl hydroquinone (4PHQ) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Pt electrode were studied by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ. It proved that the electrode was modified by a monolayer and underwent a rapid electron transfer. It was a slow adsorbed kinetic process. The ion transfer in the electrochemical redox at the SAM-modified electrode surface mainly involved into the hydrate hydrogen ion.

Because of the extremely sensitivity to the local environment of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ion, the fluorescence of Eu3+ ions was Studied by introducing Eu3+ ions to TiO2 gel by the sol-gel method, from which the structural changes of TiO2 gel were characterized. The results showed that the intensity of D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition increased with the increasement of heat treatment temperature, which indicated the evaporation of molecular water and the completeness of the condensation reaction. Because of the quenching of the fluorescence induced by the cluster of Eu3+ ions, the addition of Al3+ ions greatly enhanced the emission intensity of Eu3+ ion.

Incubated solutions containing glutathione (GSH) and alpha- or beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) were analyzed using electrospray mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry, The results suggest that both CDs can catalyze oxidation of GSH to the oxidized glutathione (GSSG). The collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the 1:1 and 1:2 (CD/GSH) and 1:1 (CD/GSSG) complexes reveals the strong interactions of the CDs with the peptides tested. The 1:2 (CD/GSH) complex is considered to be the oxidation reaction intermediate, which indicates that the three-dimensional structure of the complexed two GSHs in CD complexes Is different from that of the proton-bound GSH dimer, The oxidation product, GSSG, Is also observed in the CID spectrum of the singly charged 1:1 (CD/GSH) complex, suggesting that a complex ion-complex ion reaction occurs by forming a doubly charged complex dimer, as a result of the ability of ion trap to accumulate and activate ions. The observations indicate that ion trap mass spectrometry can be used to explore cyclodextrin-catalyzed reactions and to carry out complex gaseous chemistry research.
