Long-term toxic impact of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on the reproduction, sexual differentiation, and development of different life stages of Gobiocypris rarus and Daphnia magna

The sexual ratio of Gobiocypris rarus exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and 17 beta -estradiol from embryo to sexually mature revealed feminization and overdevelopment of connective tissue in male fish gonad in 2-30 pg/L TCDD concentration range. Daphnia magna was not sensitive to the high dose of TCDD (0.1-1000 ng/ml), but the reproduction of D. magna treated with TCDD decreased after the 8th day. 7-Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities in newly fertilized eggs of G. rarus exposed to TCDD dosage groups (1000-100,000 pg/L) were significantly induced and increased with TCDD concentrations at the early life stage, while no difference was found between low TCDD dosage groups (<100 pg/L), but a good relationship between the EROD activity and the TCDD concentration was observed during a long-term developmental stage. There was a pericardial edema formed in a 2-week yolk-sac at the concentration of 1000 pg/L TCDD. But in the exposure group (2 pg/L TCDD for 120 days), the cell nuclei of hepatocytes was far from the center and packed toward the cell membrane; the cristae of most mitochondria in the cell dropped and collapsed; the rough endoplasmic reticulum broke into fragments; and numerous lipid droplets formed in the cell. Experimental demonstration of distributed feedback semiconductor lasers based on reconstruction-equivalent-chirp technology

In this paper we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental realization of distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers based on reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technology. Lasers with different lasing wavelengths are achieved simultaneously on one chip, which shows a potential for the REC technology in combination with the photonic integrated circuits (PIC) technology to be a possible method for monolithic integration, in that its fabrication is as powerful as electron beam technology and the cost and time-consuming are almost the same as standard holographic technology. A small signal equivalent circuit model for resonant tunnelling diode

We report a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) small signal equivalent circuit model consisting of quantum capacitance and quantum inductance. The model is verified through the actual InAs/In0.53Ga0.47As/AlAs RTD fabricated on an InP substrate. Model parameters are extracted by fitting the equivalent circuit model with ac measurement data in three different regions of RTD current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. The electron lifetime, representing the average time that the carriers remain in the quasibound states during the tunneling process, is also calculated to be 2.09 ps.

Small Signal Equivalent Circuit Model and Modulation Properties of Vertical Cavity-Surface Emitting Lasers

Small signal equivalent circuit model and modulation properties of vertical cavity-surface emitting lasers (VCSEL's) are presented. The modulation properties both in analytic-equation calculation and in circuit model simulation are studied. The analytic-equation calculation of the modulation properties is calculated by using Mathcad program and the circuit model simulation is simulation is simulated by using Pspice program respectively. The results of calculation and the simulation are in good agreement with each other. Experiment is performed to testify the circuit model.

Small signal equivalent circuit model of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers

Small signal equivalent circuit model of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL's) is given in this paper. The modulation properties of VCSEL are simulated using this model in Pspice program. The simulation results are good agree with experiment data. Experiment is performed to testify the circuit model.

Direct toxicity assessment of toxic chemicals with electrochemical method

Electrochemical measurement of respiratory chain activity is a rapid and reliable screening for the toxicity on microorganisms. Here, we investigated in-vitro effects of toxin on Escherichia coli (E. coli) that was taken as a model microorganism incubated with ferricyanide. The current signal of ferrocyanide effectively amplified by ultramicroelectrode array (UMEA), which was proven to be directly related to the toxicity. Accordingly, a direct toxicity assessment (DTA) based on chronoamperometry was proposed to detect the effect of toxic chemicals on microorganisms. The electrochemical responses to 3,5-dichlorophenol (DCP) under the incubation times revealed that the toxicity reached a stable level at 60 min, and its 50% inhibiting concentration (IC50) was estimated to be 8.0 mg L-1. At 60 min incubation, the IC50 values for KCN and As2O3 in water samples were 4.9 mg L-1 and 18.3 mg L-1, respectively. But the heavy metal ions, such as Cu2+ Pb2+ and Ni2+, showed no obvious toxicity on E. coli.

Measurement of the single-color three-photon resonant ionization spectrum of atomic uranium under the "equivalent wavelength effect laser" interaction

Using Nd: YAG laser (532 nm) pumped mixed-dye laser. we obtained the output of this dye enhanced at the wavelength interval equivalent to that given by the copper vapor laser pumped dye laser. This measure favored is with the measurement of single-color three-photon resonant ionization spectrum of atomic uranium in the range of 562-586 nm,which is otherwise not efficiently covered by Nd: YAG laser pumped dye laser with any single dye. Thus 140 U I energy levels were obtained and the peaks of interest 575.814 nm and 575.836 rim were well resolved and their relative intensity determined.

THE VALENCE CHANGE FROM RE3+ TO RE2+ (RE-EQUIVALENT-TO-EU, SM, YB) IN SRB4O7-RE PREPARED IN AIR AND THE SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF RE2+

A valence change from RE3+ to RE2+ (RE=Eu, Sm, Yb) was observed in samples of SrB4O7: RE prepared by solid state reaction at high temperature in air. The phosphors SrB4O7: RE2+ show efficient luminescence at room temperature. The broad band d-f emissions of Eu2+ and Yb2+ are at 367 and 360 nm respectively. The sharp line f-f emissions of the Sm2+ ion (5D0-F-7(J)) are in the range 680-780 nm. The probable reasons for the valence change of Eu, Sm and Yb in this host are discussed.

Equivalent-barotropic definition of tropospheric mean temperature

An equivalent-barotropic (EB) description of the tropospheric temperature field is derived from the geostrophic empirical mode (GEM) in the form of a scalar function Gamma(p, phi), where p is pressure and phi is 300-850-mb thickness. Baroclinic parameter phi plays the role of latitude at each longitudinal section. Compared with traditional Eulerian-mean methods, GEM defines a mean field in baroclinic streamfunction space with a time scale much longer than synoptic variability. It prompts an EB concept that is only based on a baroclinic field. Monthly GEM fields are diagnosed from NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data and account for more than 90% of the tropospheric thermal variance. The circumglobal composite of GEM fields exhibits seasonal, zonal, and hemispheric asymmetries, with larger rms errors occurring in winter and in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Zonally asymmetric features and planetary deviation from EB are seen in the NH winter GEM. Reconstruction of synoptic sections and correlation analysis reveal that the tropospheric temperature field is EB at the leading order and has a 1-day phase lag behind barotropic variations in extratropical regions.
