Smooth thin films of three kinds of nickel(II)-azo complexes were prepared by the spin-coating method. Absorption spectra of the thin films on K9 glass substrate in the 300-600 nn wavelength region were measured. Optical constants (complex refractive index N = n + ik) and thickness of the thin films prepared on single-crystal silicon substrate in the 300-600 nm wavelength region were investigated on rotating analyzer-polarizer type of scanning ellipsometer, and dielectric constants epsilon (epsilon = epsilon(1) + i epsilon(2)), absorption coefficients a as well as reflectance R of thin films were then calculated at 405 nm. In addition, in order to examine the possible use of nickel(II)-azo complex thin film as an optical recording medium, one of the nickel(II)-azo complex thin film prepared on K9 glass substrate with an Ag reflective layer was also studied by atomic force microscopy and static optical recording. The results show that the nickel(II)-azo complex thin film is smooth and has a root mean square surface roughness of 2.25 nm, and the recording marks on the nickel(II)-azo complex thin film are very clear and circular, and their size can reach 200 nn or less. Fe:BiOx films are fabricated on K9 glass substrates by rf-magnetron sputtering of a BiFeO target under argon atmosphere with increasing sputtering power from 80 to 200 W at room temperature. It is found that the thin films grown at the sputtering power of 160W can be formed at an appropriate deposition rate and have an improved surface morphology. The XPS result reveals that the films investigated are comprised of Bi, Fe and O elements. A typical XRD pattern shows that no phase transition occurs in the films up to 400 degrees C. The results of the blue laser recording test demonstrate that the Fe:BiOx films have good writing sensitivity for blue laser beam (406.7 nm) and good stability after reading 10000 times. The recording marks of 200nm or less are obtained. These results indicate that the introduction of Fe into BiOx films can reduce the mark size and improve the stability of the films.

Three kinds of rare earth complexes derived from dibenzoylmethane (DBM) ligand were synthesized by reacting free ligand and different rare earth ions(La (3+), Sm3+ and Gd3+). Their contents and structures were postulated based on elemental analysis, LDI-TOF-MS, FT-IR spectra and UV-Vis spectra. Smooth films on K9 glass substrates were prepared using the spin-coating method. Their solubility in organic solvents, absorption and reflection properties of thin film and thermal stability of these complexes were evaluated. These complexes would be a promising recording material for high-density digital versatile disc-recordable (HD-DVD-R) system. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An electrode drive is described for recordings of neurons in freely moving and chaired monkeys during the performance of behavioural tasks. The electrode drives are implanted for periods of up to 6 months, and can advance up to 42 electrodes using 14 independent drive mechanisms. The drive samples 288 points within a 12 mm x 12 min region, with 15 min of electrode travel. Major advantages are that recordings are made in freely moving monkeys, and these recordings can be compared with those in chaired experiments; waveforms of single neurons are stable, enabling prolonged recordings of the same neurons across periods of days; recordings can be made throughout the brain, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and hippocampus; the drive accommodates both sharp microelectrodes and fine wire assemblies such as tetrodes. A group of prototype integrated circuits are presented for a wireless neural recording micro-system. An inductive link was built for transcutaneous wireless power transfer and data transmission. Power and data were transmitted by a pair of coils on a same carrier frequency. The integrated receiver circuitry was composed of a full-wave bridge rectifier, a voltage regulator, a date recovery circuit, a clock recovery circuit and a power detector. The amplifiers were designed with a limited bandwidth for neural signals acquisition. An integrated FM transmitter was used to transmit the extracted neural signals to external equipments. 16.5 mW power and 50 bps - 2.5 Kbps command data can be received over 1 MHz carrier within 10 mm. The total gain of 60 dB was obtained by the preamplifier and a main amplifier at 0.95Hz - 13.41 KHz with 0.215 mW power dissipation. The power consumption of the 100 MHz ASK transmitter is 0.374 mW. All the integrated circuits operated under a 3.3 V power supply except the voltage regulator.

A prototype microsystem is presented for wireless neural recording application. An inductive link was built for transcutaneous wireless power transfer and data transmission. Total 16.5 mW power and 50 bps - 2.5 Kbps command data can be received over 1 - 5 MHz with a distance of 0-10 mm. The integrated amplifiers were designed with a limited bandwidth for neural signals acquisition. The gain of 60 dB was obtained by preamplifier at 7 Hz - 3 KHz. An integrated FM transmitter was used to transmit the extracted neural signals to external equipments with 0.374 - 2 mW power comsumption and a maximum data rate of 500 Kbps at 100 MHz. All the integrated circuits modules except the power recovery circuit were tested or stimulated under a 3.3 V power supply, and fabricated in standard CMOS processing.
