A chain coordination polymer with the chemical formula {[Cu4L2(H2O)] (.) H2O)(n), has been synthesized by the assembly reaction of K(2)CuL(.)1.5H(2)O and Cu(OAC)(2)(H2O)-H-. with a 1:1 mole ratio in methanol., where H4L=2-hydroxy-3-[(E)-({2-[(2-hydroxybenzoyl)imino]ethyl I imino)methyl] benzoic acid, OAC(-) = CH3COO-. The crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, the compound has chain molecular structure formed by dissymmetrical tetranuclear units. The magnetic measurements showed that Cu-Cu of the complex exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions, and satisfactory fittings to the observed magnetic susceptibility data were obtained by assuming a binuclear system, and further using molecular field approximation to deal with magnetic exchange interactions between binuclear systems.

The compounds (het)(PtCl6)2H(2)O 1, (het)(HgI4).H2O 2 (het = 2-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)thiamine) and (hpt)(Hg2Br6) 3 (hpt = 2-(alpha-hydroxypropyl)thiamine) have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography in order to study the influence of the anion and molecular conformation on the formation of supramolecular architectures that adsorb anionic species. Both het and hpt molecules adopt the usual S conformation for C2-substituted thiamine but differ from the F conformation for C2-free thiamine derivatives. Two types of characteristic ligand-anion complexation are observed, being of the forms C(6')-H...anion...thiazolium-ring (in 1 and 2) and N(4'1)-H...anion...thiazolium-ring (in 3). The reaction of het with PtCl62- or HgI42- gives a 1-D double-chain in 1, consisting of two hydrogen-bonded het chains, which are cross-linked by anions through hydrogen bonding and anion...aromatic-ring interactions, or a cationic 3-D framework in 2 formed by the stacking of hydrogen-bonded sheets with anion-and-water-filled channels. In the case of 3, hydrogen-bonded hpt dimers and HgBr62- anions form alternate cation-anion columns. A comparison with the cases of C2-free thiamine-anion complexes indicates that the change in molecular conformation results in novel supramolecular assemblies in 1 and 2 and an analogous architecture in 3, which also depends on the nature of the anions.

Self-assembly of the building block [Cu(oxbe)](-) with Mn(II) led to a novel coordination polymer {[Cu(oxbe)]Mn(H2O)(Cu(oxbe)(DMF)]}(n).nDMF.nH(2)O, where H(3)oxbe is a new dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)-oxamido and DMF = dimethylformamide. The crystal forms in the triclinic system, space group P(1)over-bar, with a = 9.260(4) angstorm, b = 12.833(5) angstrom, c = 15.274(6) angstrom , alpha = 76.18(3)degrees, beta = 82.7(3)degrees, gamma = 82.31(3)degrees, and Z = 2. The crystal structure of the title complex reveals that the two-dimensional bimetallic layers are constructed of (CuMnII)-Mn-II-Cu-II chains linked together by carboxylate bridge and hydrogen bonds help to produce a novel three-dimensional channel-like structure. The magnetic susceptibility measurements (5-300 K) were analyzed by means of the Hamiltonian (H)over-cap = -2J(S)over-cap (Mn)((S)over-cap(Cu1) + (S)over-cap(Cu2)), leading to J = -17.4 cm(-1).

Deep brown-red crystals are formed in the triclinic system, space group P (1) over bar, a=16.581(l)Angstrom, b=18.354(1)Angstrom, c=24.485(2)Angstrom, alpha=80.589(l)degrees, beta=71.279(1)degrees, gamma=67.084(1)degrees, V=6493.8(8)Angstrom(3), Z=2, lambda(MoKalpha)=0.71073Angstrom (R(F)=0.0686 for 29,053 reflections). Data were collected on a Bruker Smart Apex CCD diffractometer at 293 K in the range of 1.76 < theta < 28.06degrees using omega-2theta scans technique. The structure of the title compound may be considered to be based on {Mo6O12(HPO4)(3)(PO4)(OH)(3)} units bonded together with {Mn(phen)(2)} subunits into a two-dimensional network. Two types of tunnels are observed in the solid of the title compound.

The copolymerizations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and propylene oxide (PO) were performed using new ternary rare-earth catalyst, It was found that the rare-earth coordination catalyst consisting of Nd(CCl3COO)(3), ZnEt2 and glycerine was very effective for the copolymerization of PO with CO2. The effects of the relative molar ratio and addition order of the catalyst components, copolymerization reaction time, and operating pressure as well as temperature on the copolymerization were systematically investigated. At an appropriate combination of all variables, the yield could be as high as 6875 g/mol Nd per hour at 90 degreesC in a 8 h reaction period.

Two new compounds, [CoL2(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2). 8H(2)O (1) and [CoL(H2O)(2)(CH3CO2)(2)]. H2O (2), were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(benzimidazole) (L). In 1, each cobalt ion is coordinated to four nitrogen atoms from four molecules of L, and to two water molecules. Metal ions are bridged by L ligands to form infinite (4, 4) networks that contain 44-membered rings. The (4, 4) networks of 1 stack in a parallel fashion, resulting in the formation of large channels in the material. In 2, each cobalt ion is coordinated to two N atoms from two L molecules, two water molecules and two carboxylate O atoms from two acetate anions. Each L molecule is coordinated to two cobalt ions, acting as a bridging ligand as in 1. The bridged cobalt ions form an infinite zigzag chain structure.

Reaction of thiamine or thiamine monophosphate (TMP) with K2Pt(NO2)(4) afforded a metal complex, Pt(thiamine)(NO2)(3) (1), and two salt-type compounds, (H-thiamine)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (2) and (TMP)(2)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (3), which were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In 1, the square-planar Pt2+ ion is coordinated to the pyrimidine N(1'), a usual metal-binding site, and three NO2- groups. The thiamine molecule exists as a monovalent cation in 1 and a divalent cation in 2 while the TMP molecule is a monovalent cation in 3. In each compound, thiamine or TMP adopts the usual F conformation and forms two types of host-guest-like interactions with anions, which are of the bridging forms, C(2)-H . . . anion . . . pyrimidine-ring and N(4'1)-H(...)anion(...)thiazolium-ring. In 3, there is an additional anion-bridging interaction between the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of TMP, being of the form C(6')-H . . . anion . . . thiazolium-ring. The salts 2 and 3 show similar hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers of thiamine or TMP between which the anions are held. Results are compared with those of the other thiamine-platinum complexes. Dark green crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21, a = 24.164(5), b = 18.281(4), c = 11.877(2) Angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V= 5247(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, lambda (MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0331 for 5353 reflections). Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.69 degrees < theta < 25.04 degrees using the omega -scan technique. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full-matrix least squares on F-2 using SHELXL-93. The structure of this compound consists of discrete (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26 clusters, constructed from beta -octamolybdate subunits ((Mo8O26)(4-)) covalently bonded to two (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2+) coordination complexes via bridging oxo groups that connect two adjacent molybdenum sites. The stability constant for complex of Pr(III) with adrenaline has been determined by potentiometric titration under biological conditions (37 degrees C and 0.15 mol/L NaCl). The absorption spectra of the Pr(III)-adrenaline system exhibit characteristic bands of Pr(III) at lower pH values. However, the charge transfer band which is due to the coordination of Pr(III) with adrenaline has been observed at higher pH values.

Four novel polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of two new double betaine derivatives have been synthesized and structurally determined. In [{La-2(L-1)(2)(H2O)(9)}(n)]Cl-6n. 2nH(2)O (1) and [{Tb(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. nH(2)O (2) (L-1 =4,4'-trimethylenedipyridinio-N,N'-diacetate), the lanthanide(III) ions form a two-dimensional layer in which each pair of lanthanide(III) ions is bridged by two syn-anti mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups. Adjacent layers are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions, to form a three-dimensional network. Isomorphous [{Ln(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. 5nH(2)O (Ln=La, 3; Ln=Tb, 4; L-2=1,3 bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) each contain a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel-like dimeric unit in which each pair of adjacent metal atoms is bridged by four syn-syn mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups that are oriented nearly perpendicular to each other about the metal-metal axis. Neighboring dimeric subunits are bridged by a pair of flexible LL ligands into a polymeric chain. Adjacent chains are inter-linked by hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions into a three-dimensional network. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
