The ability to feed on vertebrate blood has evolved many times in various arthropod clades. Consequently, saliva of blood-feeding arthropods has proven to be a rich source of antihemostatic molecules. A variety of platelet aggregation inhibitors antagonize platelet responses to wound-generated signals, including ADP, thrombin, and collagen. Anticoagulants disrupt elements of both the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. Vasodilators include nitrophorins (nitric oxide storage and transport heme proteins), a variety of peptides that mimic endogenous vasodilatory neuropeptides, and proteins that catabolize or sequester endogenous vasoconstrictors. Multiple salivary proteins may be directed against each component of hemostasis, resulting in both redundancy and in some cases cooperative interactions between antihemostatic proteins. The complexity and redundancy of saliva ensures an efficient blood meal for the arthropod, but it also provides a diverse array of novel antihemostatic molecules for the pharmacologist.

To understand better the molecular mechanisms of differential migration of antibody-secreting cells (ASCs) into mouse genital tracts, and regulation by sex hormones, surface markers, hormone receptors and adhesion molecules in mouse SG2 and PA4 hybridoma cells, respectively, secreting IgG2b and polymeric IgA antibody were detected by flow cytometry or RT-PCR. Semiquantitative RT-PCR was also used for measuring mRNA expression of adhesion molecules and chemokines (VCAM-1, ICAM-1, P-selectin, JAM-1 and CXCL12) in genital tracts of various adult mouse groups. The mRNAs of androgen receptor, estrogen receptor beta and CXCR4 were expressed in the ASCs. Sex hormones had no effect on expression of these molecules in ASCs. Except for VCAM-1, mRNA of all examined genes was expressed in normal mouse genital tracts. The mean of relative amounts of ICAM-1 and CXCL12 mRNA in all examined organs of females were higher (2.1- and 1.9-fold) than those in males. After orchiectomy or ovariectomy, the expression of ICAM-1, CXCL12 and P-selectin mRNA in the examined organs increased, except JAM-1 in male and CXCL12 in female. Sex hormone treatment recovered the changes to normal levels of mRNA expression in many examined genital tissues. In combination with our previous work, preferential migration of ASCs into female genital tract and regulation of migration by sex hormones are associated with expression patterns of adhesion molecules and chemokines in genital tract rather than in ASCs. GaN nanowires have been grown with and without In as an additional source. The effects of In surfactant on the crystal quality and photoluminescence property of GaN nanowires are reported for the first time. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements are employed to analyse the products. The results show that introducing a certain amount of In surfactant during the growth process can improve the crystal quality of the GaN nanowires, and enhance the photolurainescence of them. In addition, the as-prepared GaN nanowires have the advantage of being easy to be separated, which will benefit the subsequent nanodevice fabrication.

Recent experiments indicated that disorder effect in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) may lead to a transition of the electronic hole transport mechanism from band resonant tunneling to thermally activated hopping. In this letter, based on Mott's variable-range hopping theory, we present a kinetic study for the hole transport properties of DNA molecules. Beyond the conventional argument in large-scale systems, our numerical study for finite-size DNA molecules reveals a number of unique features for: (i) the current-voltage characteristics, (ii) the temperature and length dependence, and (iii) the transition from conducting to insulating behaviors. The surfactant effect of isoelectronic indium doping during metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth of cubic GaN on GaAs (1 0 0) substrates was studied. Its influence on the optical properties and surface morphology was investigated by using room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and atomic force microscopy. It is shown that the sample with small amount of In-doping has a narrower PL linewidth, and a smoother surface than undoped cubic GaN layers. A slight red shift of the near-band-edge emission peak was observed. These results revealed that, for small TMIn flow rates, indium played the role of the surfactant doping and effectively improved the cubic GaN film quality; for large TMIn flow rates, the alloying formation of Ga1-xInxN might have occurred. A theoretical model is presented to describe electrical transport through individual DNA molecules. By contacting the proposed model with the experimentally measured data, a variety of valuable quantities are identified. The partially decoherent nature on the guanine-cytosine (GC) pairs of DNA is also elaborated in contrast to the completely incoherent hopping mechanism discussed in the context of charge transfer experiments. We observe "ghost" islands formed on terraces during homoepitaxial nucleation of GaN. We attribute the ghost islands to intermediate nucleation states, which can be driven into "normal" islands by scanning tunneling microscopy. The formation of ghost islands is related to excess Ga atoms on the surface. The excess Ga also affect island number density: by increasing Ga coverage, the island density first decreases, reaching a minimum at about 1 monolayer (ML) Ga and then increases rapidly for coverages above 1 ML. This nonmonotonic behavior points to a surfactant effect of the Ga atoms.

A Sb-mediated growth technique is developed to deposit Ge quantum dots (QDs) of small size, high density, and foe of dislocations. These QDs were grown at low growth temperature by molecular beam epitaxy. The photoluminescence and absorption properties of these Ge QDs suggest an indirect-to-direct conversion, which is in good agreement with a theoretical calculation. We describe near-threshold high-resolution spectra and continuum resonance dynamical behaviour of all three stable hydrogen isotopic variants, and finally obtain improved values for the dissociation energies of hydrogen molecule and its ion. The second dissociation limit is determined by analysing the onset of the vibrational continuum.
