In this article, vertical structure p-type permeable-base organic transistors were proposed and demonstrated. A hole-type organic semiconductor N,N-'-diphentyl-N,N-'-bis(1-naphthylphenyl)-1,1(')-biphenyl-4,4(')-diamine was used as emitter and collector. In the permeable-base transistors, the metal base was formed by firstly coevaporating Al and Ca in vacuum and then annealing at 120 degrees C for 5 min in air, followed by a thin Al deposition. These devices show a common-base current gain of near 1.0 and a common-emitter current gain of similar to 270.

We demonstrate the suitability of N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(1-naphthylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB), an organic semiconductor widely used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), for high-gain, low operational voltage nanostructured vertical-architecture transistors, which operate as permeable-base transistors. By introducing vanadium oxide (V2O5) between the injecting metal and NPB layer at the transistor emitter, we reduced the emitter operational voltage.

In this paper, we demonstrated an effective enviromentally friendly synthesis route to prepare noble metallic (Au, Ag, Pt and Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) networks mediated by type I collagen in the absence of any seeds or surfactants. In the reactions, type I collagen served as stabilizing agent and assembly template for the synthesized metallic NPs. The hydrophobic interaction between collagen and mica interface as well as the hydrogen bonds between inter- and intra-collagen molecules play important roles in the formation of collagen-metallic NPs networks. The noble metallic NPs networks have many advantages in the applications of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and electrochemistry detection. Typically, the as-prepared Ag NPs networks reveal great Raman enhancement activity for 4-ATP, and can even be used to detect low concentration of DNA base, adenine.

The reactive compatibilization of LLDPE/PS (50/50 wt%) was achieved by Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction with a combined Lewis acids (Me3SiCl and InCl3 center dot 4H(2)O) as catalyst. The graft copolymer at the interface was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the morphology of the blends was analysized by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the combined Lewis acids had catalytic effect on Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction between LLDPE and PS, and the catalytic effect was maximal when the molar ratio of InCl3 center dot 4H(2)O to Me3SiCl was 1:5. The graft copolymer LLDPE-g-PS was formed via the F-C reaction and worked as a tailor-made compatibilizer to reduce the interfacial tension. The mechanical properties of reactive blend with combined Lewis acids as catalyst was notably improved compared to that of physical LLDPE/PS blend and serious degradation had been decreased compared to the reactive blend system with AlCl3 as catalyst; we interpreted the above results in term of acidity of combined Lewis acids.

N-type organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) employing hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) as active layer and p-type copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as buffer layer are demonstrated. The highest field-effect mobility is 7.6x10(-2) cm(2)/V s. The improved performance was attributed to the decrease of contact resistance due to the introduction of highly conductive F16CuPc/CuPc organic heterojunction. Therefore, current method provides an effective path to improve the performance of OTFTs.

We demonstrate the production of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) based p-type hybrid permeable-base transistors, which operate at low voltages having high common-base current gains. These transistors are prepared by evaporating a thin metal layer (Ag or Al) that acts as base on top of a Si substrate that acts as collector. In the sequence CuPc and Au are thermally sublimated to produce the emitter, constituting a quite simple device production procedure with the additional advantage of allowing higher integration due to its vertical architecture.

We report the construction of hybrid permeable-base transistors, in vertical architecture, using tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum as emitter, a thin gold layer as base, and n-type silicon as collector. These transistors present high common-base current gain, can be operated at low driving voltages, and allow high current density.

We synthesized a hydroxyphenyloxadiazole lithium complex (LiOXD) as a blue light-emitting and electron injection/transport material to be used in double-layer organic electroluminescent devices. Devices with the concise configuration of ITO/TPD/LiOXD/Al showed bright blue EL emission centered at 468 nm with a maximum luminance of 2900 cd m(-2). A current efficiency of 3.9 cd A(-1) and power efficiency of 1.1 lm W-1 were obtained. LiOXD was also examined as an interface material. The efficiency of an ITO/NPB/Alq(3)/Al device increased considerably when LiOXD was inserted between Alq(3) and aluminium. The improvement of the device characteristics with LiOXD approached that observed with the dielectric LiF salt.

In this paper, a novel monoaza-B15C5 derivative, N-(2-tosylamino)-isopentyl-monoaza-15-crown-5 (L), is used as an ionophore to facilitate alkali metal cations transfer across a water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interface. Well-defined voltammetric behaviors are observed at the polarized W/DCE interfaces supported at micro- and nano-pipets except Cs+. The diffusion coefficient of this ionophore in the DCE phase is calculated to be equal to (3.3+/-0.2) x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). The experimental results indicate that a 1:1 (metal: ionophore) complex is formed at the interface with a TIC/TID mechanism. The selectivity of this ionophore towards alkali ions follows the sequence Na+ > Li+ > K+ > Rb+ > Cs+. The logarithm of the association constants (log beta(1)(0)) of the LiL+, NaL+, KL+ and RbL+ complexes in the DCE phase are calculated to be 10.6, 11.6, 9.0 and 7.1, respectively. The kinetic parameters are determined by steady-state voltammograms using nanopipets. The standard rate constants (k(0)) for Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+ transfers facilitated by L are 0.54+/-0.05, 0.63+/-0.09, 0.51+/-0.04 and 0.46+/-0.06 cm s(-1), respectively. The pH values of aqueous solution have little effect on the electrochemical behaviors of these facilitated processes. The results predicate that this new type of ionophore might be useful to fabricate electrochemical sensor of sodium ion.

A functionalized fullerene derivative containing a monoaza-18-crown-6 moiety was investigated by facilitated ion (such as Li+, Na+, K+, NH4+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) transfer across the micro-water/nitrobenzene interface supported at the tip of a micropipet. The current responses were detected by cyclic voltammetry and Osteryoung square wave voltammetry, which demonstrated that the facilitated ion transfer does occur by an interfacial complexation-dissociation process. The diffusion coefficient of this compound in nitrobenzene was approximately (5.90 +/- 0.04) x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1), which is 1 order of magnitude less than other common ionophores due to the large size of the molecule. The selectivity of this molecule toward the metal ions followed the sequence Na+ > Li+ > K+ > NH4+ > Ca2+ similar to Mg2+. In addition, this compound was also easy to form film at the water/nitrobenzene interface to inhibit the simple ion transfer of tetramethylammonium ion. However, the adsorption of this ionophore has less influence on the facilitated metal ion transfer.

Sodium ion transfer across micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface facilitated by a novel ionophore, terminal-vinyl liquid crystal crown ether (LCCE) was studied by cyclic voltammetry. LCCEs have potential applications because of their physicochemical properties and the utilization of crown ethers as selective ionophoric units in other functionalized compounds are interesting. Host-guest-type behavior for such compounds in the liquid-crystalline state is studied. The experimental results suggest that the transfer of the sodium ion facilitated by LCCE was controlled by diffusion of LCCE from bulk solution of DCE to the interface. The diffusion coefficient of LCCE in DCE was calculated to be equal to (3.62 +/- 0.20) x 10(-6) cm(2)/s. Steady-state voltammograms are due to sodium ion transfer facilitated by the formation of 1: 1 metal (M)-LCCE complex at the interface and the mechanism tends to be transfer by interfacial complexation or dissociation (TIC or TID). The stability constant of the complex formed was determined to be log beta(o) = 5.5 in DCE phase. The influence of parameters such as concentration of sodium ion and concentration of LCCE on the sodium ion transfer was investigated.

In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to make agar-gel microelectrodes by filling micropipettes. These microelectrodes were used to study K+ transfer across the agar-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), and the transfer of tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)). The results observed were similar to those obtained at micro-liquid \ liquid interfaces. The effect of various amounts of agar in the aqueous phase was optimized and 3% agar was chosen based on the potential window and solidification time. The different shapes of micro-agar-gel electrodes were prepared in a similar way. The fabricated agar-gel microelectrodes obey the classical micro-disk steady-state current equation, which is different from the behavior of a normal micropipette filled with aqueous solution without silanization. SnO2 nanoparticles were found to self-pack at the air-hydrosol interface and form a nanoparticulate film. The self-packed films were observed under a Brewster angle microscope, and investigated by recording the time evolution of surface pressure and pi-A isotherms. The results show that SnO2 nanoparticles take 3 h to form a complete film at the air-hydrosol interface. Composite monolayers of SnO2 and arachidic acid were obtained by spreading arachidic acid onto a fresh hydrosol surface. Composite Y-type LB films were transferred from the air-hydrosol interface onto substrates, and characterized by FTIR, UV-vis, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and TEM techniques. The results show that the composite films have good structure, with SnO2 nanoparticles uniformly and compactly distributed in the arachidate matrix. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. Second order nonlinear optical (NLO) tensor coefficients of LiXO3 (X = I, Nb, Ta) type crystals have been evaluated on the basis of the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the modified bond charge model. The current method is capable of calculating single bond contributions to the total second order NLO susceptibility. The tenser values thus calculated agree well with experimental data. By introducing the subformula equation and the concept of the effective charge of one valence electron, we are able to successfully treat such complex crystals as LiXO3 type compounds. In addition, the bond charge expression is modified to a more reasonable form for complex crystals. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

In this paper, we have investigated the reactivity of the molybdenum oxide film toward some standard redox systems (e.g., ferrocene (Fc) and its derivatives) and observed a few interesting phenomena. The results demonstrate that the electrochemical behaviour of Fc and its derivatives at the oxide-modified carbon fiber (CF) microelectrode differs from that at a bare CF microelectrode, The conductivity of the molybdenum oxide film is seriously affected by the range and the direction of the potential scan, which influences the electrochemical behaviour of these redox systems at the film electrode. If the cycling potential is more positive than the reduction potential of the molybdenum oxide film, the reduction and oxidation peak currents of Fc and its derivatives could not be observed. The result indicates that the molybdenum oxide film on a microelectrode surface cannot transfer electrons between the surface of the electrode and Fc or its derivatives due to the existence of a high resistance between the interface in these potential ranges. On the other hand, if the lower limit of the scan potential was extended to a potential more negative than the reduction peak potential of the film, the oxidation peak of Fc or its derivatives appeared at about the potential relative to E-0 of Fc or its derivatives on the bare electrode, and the peak current is proportional to the concentration of these couples in the electrolyte. To our surprise, the peak height on the modified electrode is much larger than that on the bare CF microelectrode under the same conditions in the range of low concentration of these couples, and the oxidation peak potential of these couples is more negative than that on the bare CF microelectrode. On the basis of the experimental observation, we propose that these redox couples may undergo an interaction with the reduction state of the molybdenum oxide film. The new phenomena that we observed have been explained by using this interaction. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
