A monolithic integrated CMOS preamplifier is presented for neural recording applications. Two AC-coupied capacitors are used to eliminate the large and random DC offsets existing in the electrode-electrolyte interface. Diode-connected nMOS transistors with a negative voltage between the gate and source are candidates for the large resistors necessary for the preamplifier. A novel analysis is given to determine the noise power spectral density. Simulation results show that the two-stage CMOS preamplifier in a closed-loop capacitive feedback configuration provides an AC in-band gain of 38.8dB,a DC gain of 0,and an input-referred noise of 277nVmax, integrated from 0. 1Hz to 1kHz. The preamplifier can eliminate the DC offset voltage and has low input-referred noise by novel circuit configuration and theoretical analysis.

The angular momentum polarization and rotational state distributions of the H-2 and HCl products from the H + HCl reaction are calculated at a relative translational energy of 1.6 eV by using quasiclassical trajectories on two potential energy surfaces, one from G3 surface [T.C. Allison et al., J. Phys. Chem. 100 (1996) 13575], and the other from BW2 surface [W. Bian, H.-J. Werner, J. Chem. Phys. 112 (2000) 220]. Product rotational distributions obtained on the G3 potential energy surface (PES) are much closer to the experimental results (P.M. Aker et al., J. Chem. Phys. 90 (1989) 4795; J. Chem. Phys. 90 (1989) 4809) than the distributions calculated on the BW2 PES. The distributions of P(phi(r)) for the H-2 and HCl products obtained on the G3 PES are similar, whereas the rotational alignment effect of the H-2 product is stronger than that of the HCl product. In contrast to the polarization distributions obtained on the G3 PES, the rotational alignment effect of the two products calculated on the BW2 PES is similar. However, the abstraction reaction is dominated by out-of-plane mechanisms, while the exchange reaction is dominated by in-plane mechanisms. The significant difference of the product rotational polarization obtained on the G3 and BW2 PESs implies that the studies of the dynamical stereochemistry can provide a sensitive test for the accuracy of the PES. A new method for quantitative analysis of lactide has been developed by applying chemical kinetics to a HPLC system. The most important advance is its practical approach to the quantification of analytes that are unstable in the HPLC mobile phase. In HPLC analysis, anhydrous mobile phases cannot separate lactide from impurities, and only mixtures of water and organic solvent can achieve effective separation. By selecting conditions for testing and studying the kinetics of lactide hydrolysis, extensive experiments revealed that lactide degradation can be treated as a pseudo-first-order reaction under the given HPLC conditions, and lactide content or purity can be quantitatively determined. This method is practical for measuring the purity of the intermediate lactide in polylactic acid (PLA) production and the lactide content in PLA.

The influences of surfactants and medical drugs on the diameter size and uniformity of electrospun poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) fibers were examined by adding various surfactants (cationic, anionic, and nonionic) and typical drugs into the PLLA solution. Significant diameter reduction and uniformity improvement were observed. It was shown that the drugs were capsulated inside of the fibers and the drug release in the presence of proteinase K followed nearly zero-order kinetics due to the degradation of the PLLA fibers. Such ultrafine fiber mats containing drugs may find clinical applications in the future.

Biodegradable poly(I-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) were electrospun into ultrafine fibers. The technological parameters influencing the spinning process and morphology of the fibers obtained were examined. These parameters included solvent composition, addition of certain organic salts, molecular weight and concentration of the polymers, capillary diameter, air ventilation, and pressure imposed on the surface of the solution as well as electrostatic field. By properly choosing and adjusting these parameters, submicron PLLA and PCL fibers with a narrow diameter distribution were prepared. Scanning electronic microscopy was used to observe the morphology and diameter size of the fibers.

An amino isopropoxyl strontium (Sr-PO) initiator, which was prepared by the reaction of propylene oxide with liquid strontium ammoniate solution, was used to carry out the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters to obtain aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). The Sr-PO initiator demonstrated an effective initiating activity for the ROP of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-lactide (LLA) under mild conditions and adjusted the molecular weight by the ratio of monomer to Sr-PO initiator. Block copolymer PCL-b-PLLA was prepared by sequential polymerization of epsilon-CL and LLA, which was demonstrated by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. The chemical structure of Sr-PO initiator was confirmed by elemental analysis of Sr and N, H-1 NMR analysis of the end groups in epsilon-CL oligomer, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The end groups of PCL were hydroxyl and isopropoxycarbonyl, and FTIR spectroscopy showed the coordination between Sr-PO initiator and model monomer gamma-butyrolactone. These experimental facts indicated that the ROP of cyclic esters followed a coordination-insertion mechanism, and cyclic esters exclusively inserted into the Sr-O bond.

The high mortality rate of immunocompromised patients with fungal infections and the limited availability of highly efficacious and safe agents demand the development of new antifungal therapeutics. To rapidly discover such agents, we developed a high-throughput synergy screening (HTSS) strategy for novel microbial natural products. Specifically, a microbial natural product library was screened for hits that synergize the effect of a low dosage of ketoconazole (KTC) that alone shows little detectable fungicidal activity. Through screening of approximate to 20,000 microbial extracts, 12 hits were identified with broadspectrum antifungal activity. Seven of them showed little cytotoxicity against human hepatoma cells. Fractionation of the active extracts revealed beauvericin (BEA) as the most potent component, because it dramatically synergized KTC activity against diverse fungal pathogens by a checkerboard assay. Significantly, in our immunocompromised mouse model, combinations of BEA (0.5 mg/kg) and KTC (0.5 mg/kg) prolonged survival of the host infected with Candida parapsilosis and reduced fungal colony counts in animal organs including kidneys, lungs, and brains. Such an effect was not achieved even with the high dose of 50 mg/kg KTC. These data support synergism between BEA and KTC and thereby a prospective strategy for antifungal therapy.
