In natural and synthetic materials having non-racemic chiral centers, chirality and structural ordering each play a distinct role in the formation of ordered states. Configurational chirality can be extended to morphological chirality when the phase, structures possess low liquid crystalline order. In the crystalline states the crystallization process suppresses the chiral helical morphology due to strong ordering interactions, In this Letter, we report the first observation of helical single lamellar crystals of synthetic non-racemic chiral polymers. Experimental evidence shows that the molecular chains twist along both the long and short axes of the helical lamellar crystals, which is the first time a double-twist molecular orientation in a helical crystal has been observed.

Phase structures and transformation mechanisms of nonracemic chiral biological and synthetic polymers are fundamentally important topics in understanding their macroscopic responses in different environments. It has been known for many years that helical structures and morphologies can exist in low-ordered chiral liquid crystalline (LC) phases. However, when the chiral liquid crystals form highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases, the helical morphology is suppressed due to the crystallization process. A double-twisted morphology has been observed in many liquid crystalline biopolymers such as dinoflaggellate chromosomes (in Prorocentrum micans) in an in vivo arrangement. Helical crystals grown from solution have been reported in the case of Bombyx mori silk fibroin crystals having the beta modification. This study describes a synthetic nonracemic chiral main-chain LC polyester that is able to thermotropically form helical single lamellar crystals. Flat single lamellar crystals can also be observed under the same crystallization condition. Moreover, flat and helical lamellae can coexist in one single lamellar crystal, within which one form can smoothly transform to the other. Both of these crystals possess the same structure, although translational symmetry is broken in the helical crystals. The polymer chain folding direction in both flat and helical lamellar crystals is determined to be identical, and it is always along the long axis of the lamellae. This finding provides an opportunity to study the chirality effect on phase structure, morphology, and transformation in condensed states of chiral materials. [S0163-1829(99)01042-5].

Spectra properties of Ce3+ ions and Eu2+ ions in KZnF3 were studied and energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ was observed in co-doped with Ce3+ and Eu2+ systems. Quantum yields of energy transfer were calculated, The investigated mechanism of energy transfer is electric dipole-dipole interactions, We also noticed that the existence of Ce3+ is conductive to observe f-f transition emission of Eu2+ ions.

Polyimides were prepared from diamines: 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (3MPDA) and 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (4MPDA). 1,4-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3'-4,4'-diphenylsulphone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SO(2)PDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulphide tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SPDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexa-fluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) were used as dianhydride. The gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2 and N-2 through the polyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. The results show that as methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution groups densities increase from 7.73 x 10(-3) molcm(-3) to 13.50 x 10(-3)molcm(-3), the peameability of H-2 increases 10-fold at 60% loss of permselectivity of H-2/N-2 however, the permeability of O-2 increases 20-fold at 20% loss of permselectivity of O-2/N-2. For O-2/N-2 separation, PMDA-3MPDA has similar performance to 6FDA-3MPDA and 6FDA-4MPDA; all have higher permeabilities for O-2 than normal polyimides, and the P(O-2)/alpha(O-2/N-2) trade-off relationships lie on the upper bound line for polymers. Electrospray ionization (ESI) combined with multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry (MSn) was used to directly analyze the glycolipid mixture from bacteria Bacillus pumilus without preliminary separation. Full scan ESI-MS revealed the composition of picomole quantities of glycerolglycolipid species containing C-14-C-19 fatty acids, some of which were monounsaturated, Two main components were identified from their molecular masses and fragmentation pathways. The fragmentation pathway of the known compound compared with the investigated compound verified the proposed structure as 1(3)-acyl-2-pentadecanoyl-3(1)-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-sn-glycerols. A comparison of the multiple tandem mass spectra of the different alkali-metal cation adducts indicates that the intensity of fragments and the dissociation pathways are dependent on the alkali-metal type, The basic structures of glycerolglycolipids were reflected clearly from the fragmentation patterns of the sodium cations, The intense fragments of the sugar residue from the precursor ions were obtained from the lithiated adduct ions. ESI-MSn spectra of [M + K](+) ions did not provide as much fragmentation as [M + Na](+) and [M + Li](+) adducts, but their spectra allow the position of glycerol acylation to be determined. On the basis of MS2 spectra of[M + K](+) ions, it was established that all components have a C-15:0 fatty acid at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone and C-14-C-19 acids at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone. Isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of a syndiotactic polypropylene(sPP) sample synthesized by new metallocene catalyst at different annealing temperatures and different cooling rates have been investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and density analysis. The equilibrium melting temperature( T-m(0)) is 158 degrees C by Hoffman-Weeks method. The equilibrium heat of fusion(Delta H-m(0)) is 88J/g in terms of the density analysis and DSC methods. The lateral and end surface free energies derived from the Lauritzen-Hoffman spherulitic growth rate equation are sigma = 5.2erg/cm(2) and sigma(e) = 69erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding is determined to be q = 33.75kJ/mol. Modified Avrami equation and Ozawa equation can be used to describe the non-isothermal crystallization behavior. And a new and convenient approach by combining the Avrami equation and Ozawa equation in a same crystallinity is used to describe the non-isothermal behavior as well. The crystallization activation energies are evaluated to be 73.7kJ/mol and 73.1kJ/mol for isothermal crystallization and non-isothermal crystallization, respectively. The Avrami exponent n is 1.5 similar to 1.6 for isothermal crystallization procedure, while the Avrami exponent n,is 2.5 similar to 3.5 for non-isothermal crystallization procedure. This indicated the difference of nucleation and growth between the two procedures.

A series of copolyimides were prepared from 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamines (3MPDA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Modification of the copolyimides by ultraviolet irradiation were carried out. Gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2, and N-2 through the copolyimides and photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees C. The relationships between gas permeabilities and temperature are in agreement with the Arrhenius equation. The structure of photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and gel measurement methods. Linear relationships between both log P and E-p and the volume fraction of PMDA-3MPDA exist. Photochemically crosslinking modification result in a decrease in gas permeability and an increase in E-p and alpha(H-2/N-2) for all the copolyimides. For H-2/N-2 separation, photochemically crosslinked copolyimides are of higher gas permeabilities and permselectivities simultaneously than normal polyimides. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Crystallographic and magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds (PrxSm1-x) Mn2Si2 (x = 0 similar to 0.80) have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, XPS and magnetic measurements. All the compounds crystallize in ThCr2Si2-type structure. Substitution of Pr for Sm leads to the increase of the lattice constants and the transition from antiferromagnetism (AFM) to ferromagnetism (FM). The valence-fluctuation in the compounds was observed and the relation between the change of electron binding energy and magnetic properties was also discussed preliminarily.

During the development of our ESESOC system (Expert System for the Elucidation of the Structures of Organic Compounds), computer perception of topological symmetry is essential in searching for the canonical description of a molecular structure, removing the irredundant connections in the structure generation process, and specifying the number of peaks in C-13- and H-1-NMR spectra in the structure evaluation process. In the present paper, a new path identifier is introduced and an algorithm for detection of topological symmetry from a connection table is developed by the all-paths method. Electrochemical redox behavior of noradrenaline in alkaline solution on a glassy carbon electrode has been investigated by in situ UV-vis and CD spectroelectrochemistry by using a long optical path thin-layer cell. The experimental data were processed by using a double logarithmic method of analysis together with nonlinear regression which confirmed that the first step in both the oxidation of noradrenaline and reduction of noradrenochrome is a two-electron irreversible process governed by an EE mechanism. The kinetic parameters of the electrode reactions, i.e., charge transfer coefficient and the number of electrons transferred, alpha(1)n(1) = 0.11 and alpha(2)n(2) = 0.23, formal potentials modified with kinetics, E-1(0') = 0.65 (+/- 0.01) V and E-2(0') = 0.72V and standard rate cnstants, k(1)(0) = 7.0(+/-0.5)x10(-5) cm s(-1), for the first and second steps in the oxidation process of noradrenaline, and similarly, alpha(1)n(1) = 0.33, alpha(2)n(2) = 0.58, E-1(0') = 0.37(+/-0.01) V, E-0' = -0.25 (+/-0.01) V and k(1)(0) approximate to k(2)(0) = 1.06 (+/-0.05)x10(-4) cm s(-1) for the first and second steps in the reduction process of noradrenochrome were also determined.

An Electroluminescent device with PVK film doped with Eu(TTA)(3) Phen and PBD was fabricated. The device structure of glass substrate/indium-tin-oxide/PPV/PVK : Eu(TTA)3 Phen : PBD/Alq(3)/Al was employed. A sharply red electroluminescence with a maximum luminance of 56. 8 cd/m(2) at 48 V was achieved.

Based on the complex crystal chemical bond theory, the formula of Liu and Cohen's, which is only suitable for one type of bond, has been extended to calculate the bulk modulus of ternary chalcopyrite A(I)B(III)C(2)(VI) and A(II)B(IV)C(2)(V) which contains two types of bonds. Matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectra of saccharides with three common matrixes were studied here. It is shown that Na+ and K+ play important roles in the determination of oligasaccharide molecule weight and the molecular weights (MW) of glucans(dextran) with MW more than 10 000 is determined successfully with the help of column chromatography, By comparing the effects of three matrixes in saccharide analysis and comparing positive-ion and negative-ion matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectra of oligo- and polysaccharides, the most suitable matrix for saccharide analysis, 2,5-dihydroxylbezonic acid (DHB), is selected and the ion formation processes of saccharides under matrix-assisted laser adsorption/ionization condition are clarified.

Using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (MS) combined with sequential tandem MS(ESI-MSn), two major steroidal saponins extracted from Tribulus terrestris were studied, and considerable useful structural information was obtained. The structure of the proposed known steroidal saponin was verified, and the structure of the unknown saponin was investigated using MSn experiments. Some special fragment ions were also observed, and the corresponding fragmentation mechanisms were investigated which are characteristic for steroidal saponins and can give some information on the linkage position of some sugar groups in saponins. This methodology has been established as a powerful tool for the rapid, comparative analysis of mixtures such as crude plant extracts. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
