An association of the dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) gene located on chromosome 11p15.5 and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been demonstrated and replicated by multiple investigators. A specific allele [the 7-repeat of a 48-bp variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in exon 3] has been proposed as an etiological factor in attentional deficits manifested in some children diagnosed with this disorder. In the current study, we evaluated ADHD subgroups defined by the presence or absence of the 7-repeat allele of the DRD4 gene, using neuropsychological tests with reaction time measures designed to probe attentional networks with neuroanatomical foci in D4-rich brain regions. Despite the same severity of symptoms on parent and teacher ratings for the ADHD subgroups, the average reaction times of the 7-present subgroup showed normal speed and variability of response whereas the average reaction times of the 7-absent subgroup showed the expected abnormalities (slow and variable responses). This was opposite the primary prediction of the study. The 7-present subgroup seemed to be free of some of the neuropsychological abnormalities thought to characterize ADHD.

The polymorphism of a gene or a locus is studied with increasing frequency by multiple laboratories or the same group at different times. Such practice results in polymorphism being revealed by different samples at different regions of the locus. Tests of neutrality have been widely conducted for polymorphism data but commonly used statistical tests cannot be applied directly to such data. This article provides a procedure to conduct a neutrality test and details are given for two commonly used tests. Applying the two new tests to the chemokine-receptor gene (CCR5) in humans, we found that the hypothesis that all mutations are selectively neutral cannot explain the observed pattern of DNA polymorphism.

The compensatory growth responses of individual juveniles of two co-existing species were compared after identical periods of starvation to determine inter-specific similarities and differences. The carnivorous stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus was compared with the omnivorous minnow Phoxinus phoxinus. Both species experienced 1 or 2 weeks of starvation before being re-fed ad libitum. The two species differed in their response to the starvation periods, with minnows showing a lower weight-specific loss. Both species showed compensatory responses in appetite, growth and to a lesser extent, growth efficiency. Minnows wholly compensated for 1 and 2 weeks of starvation. At the end of the experiment, sticklebacks starved For 2 weeks were still showing a compensatory response and had nut achieved full compensation. The compensatory responses of the sticklebacks showed a lag of a week before developing in the re-feeding phase, whereas the response of the minnows was immediate. Analysis of lipid and dry matter concentrations suggested that the compensatory response restored reserve lipids while also bringing the fish back to the growth trajectory of continuously fed fish. The characteristics of a resonant cavity-enhanced InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot n-i-n photodiode with only a bottom distributed Bragg reflector used as the cavity mirror, are reported. To suppress the dark current, an AlAs layer is inserted into the device structure as the blocking layer. It turns out that the structure still possesses the resonant coupling nature, and makes Rabi splitting discernible in the photoluminescence spectra. The measured responsivity spectrum of the photocurrent shows a peak at lambda = 1030 nm, and increases rapidly as the bias voltage increases. A peak responsivity of 0.75 A/W, or equivalently an external quantum efficiency of 90.3%, is obtained at V-bias = -1.4 V.

On the basis of DBF nets proposed by Wang Shoujue, the model and properties of DBF neural network were discussed in this paper. When applied in pattern recognition, the algorithm and implement on hardware were presented respectively. We did experiments on recognition of omnidirectionally oriented rigid objects on the same level, using direction basis function neural networks, which acts by the method of covering the high dimensional geometrical distribution of the sample set in the feature space. Many animal and vehicle models (even with rather similar shapes) were recognized omnidirectionally thousands of times. For total 8800 tests, the correct recognition rate is 98.75%, the error rate and the rejection rate are 0.5% and 1.25% respectively. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We report low-threshold high-temperature operation of 7.4 mu m strain-compensated InGaAs/InAlAs quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). For an uncoated 22-mu m-wide and 2-mm-long laser, the low-threshold current densities, i.e. 0.33 kA/cm(2) at 81 K in pulsed mode and 0.64 kA/cm(2) at 84 K in cw mode, are realized. High-temperature operation of uncoated devices, with a high value of 223 K, is achieved in cw mode.

Semiconducting manganese silicide, Mn27Si47 and Mn15Si26, were obtained using mass-analyzed low energy dual ion beam epitaxy technique, Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiles showed that some of the Mn ions were deposited on single-crystal silicon substrate and formed a 37.5 nm thick Mn film, and the other Mn ions were successfully implanted into the Si substrate with the implantation depth of 618 nm. Some samples were annealed in the atmosphere of flowing N-2 at 840 degreesC. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the annealing was beneficial to the formation of Mn27Si47 and Mn15Si26 (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

In this paper, we propose a new scheme for omnidirectional object-recognition in free space. The proposed scheme divides above problem into several onmidirectional object-recognition with different depression angles. An onmidirectional object-recognition system with oblique observation directions based on a new recognition theory-Biomimetic Pattern Recognition (BPR) is discussed in detail. Based on it, we can get the size of training samples in the onmidirectional object-recognition system in free space. Omnidirection ally cognitive tests were done on various kinds of animal models of rather similar shapes. For the total 8400 tests, the correct recognition rate is 99.89%. The rejection rate is 0.11% and on the condition of zero error rates. Experimental results are presented to show that the proposed approach outperforms three types of SVMs with either a three degree polynomial kernel or a radial basis function kernel.

A new theoretical model of Pattern Recognition principles was proposed, which is based on "matter cognition" instead of "matter classification" in traditional statistical Pattern Recognition. This new model is closer to the function of human being, rather than traditional statistical Pattern Recognition using "optimal separating" as its main principle. So the new model of Pattern Recognition is called the Biomimetic Pattern Recognition (BPR)(1). Its mathematical basis is placed on topological analysis of the sample set in the high dimensional feature space. Therefore, it is also called the Topological Pattern Recognition (TPR). The fundamental idea of this model is based on the fact of the continuity in the feature space of any one of the certain kinds of samples. We experimented with the Biomimetic Pattern Recognition (BPR) by using artificial neural networks, which act through covering the high dimensional geometrical distribution of the sample set in the feature space. Onmidirectionally cognitive tests were done on various kinds of animal and vehicle models of rather similar shapes. For the total 8800 tests, the correct recognition rate is 99.87%. The rejection rate is 0.13% and on the condition of zero error rates, the correct rate of BPR was much better than that of RBF-SVM.
