A beta-diketone ligand 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione (Hpfnp), which contains a pentafluoroalkyl chain, was synthesized as the main sensitizer for synthesizing new near-infrared (NIR) luminescent Ln(pfnp)(3)phen (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb, Sm) complexes. At the same time, a series of lanthanide complexes covalently bonded to xerogels by the ligand 5-(N,N-bis-3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)ureyl-1,10-phenanthroline (phen-Si) were synthesized in situ via a sol-gel process. [The obtained materials are denoted as xerogel-bonded Ln complexes (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb, Sm).] The single crystal structures of the Ln(pfnp) 3phen complexes were determined.

The ligand Hhfth [4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)hexane-1,3-dione], which contains a heptafluoropropyl group, has been used to synthesize several new ternary lanthanide complexes (Ln = Er, Ho, Yb, Nd) in which the synergistic ligand is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy). The two series of complexes are [Ln(hfth)(3)phen] [abbreviated as (Ln)1, where Ln = Er, Ho, Yb] and [Ln(hfth)(3)bipy] [abbreviated as (Ln)2, where Ln = Er, Ho, Yb, Nd]. Members of the two series have been structurally characterized. The growth morphology, diffuse reflectance (DR) spectra, thermogravimetric analyses, and photophysical studies of these complexes are described in detail. After ligand-mediated excitation of the complexes, they all show the characteristic near-infrared (NIR) luminescence of the corresponding Ln(3+) ions (Ln = Er, Ho, Yb, Nd). This is attributed to efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the central Ln(3+) ions, i.e. an antenna effect. The heptafluorinated substituent in the main hfth sensitizer serves to reduce the degree of vibrational quenching. With these NIR-luminescent lanthanide complexes, the luminescent spectral region from 1300 to 1600 nm, which is of particular interest for telecommunication applications, can be covered completely.

The cleavage of adenosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-AMP) and guanosine-5'-monophosphate (S-GMP) by Ce4+ and lanthanide complex of 2-carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide (Ge-132) in acidic and near neutral conditions was investigated by NMR, HPLC and measuring the liberated inorganic phosphate at 37 degrees C and 50 degrees C, The results showed that 5'-GMP and 5'-AMP was converted to guanine (G), 5'-monophosphate (depurination of 5'-GMP), ribose (depurination and dephosphorylation of 5'-GMP), phosphate and adenine (A), 5'-monophosphate (depurination of 5'-AMP), ribose (depurination and dephosphorylation of 5'-AMP), phosphate respectively by Ce4+. In presence of lanthanide complexes, 5'-GMP and 5'-AMP were converted to guanosine (Guo) and phosphate and adenosine (Ado) and phosphate respectively. The mechanism of cleaving 5'-GMP and 5'-AMP is hydrolytic scission.

The aqueous complexation of lanthanide complexes of citrate in pH 7.4 solutions has been studied by using lanthanide-induced shift and relaxation times measurement methods. These results indicate that citrate coordinate via 3-hydroxyl and 3-carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and form 1:2 (Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through lanthanide series. We suggest a new coordination geometry which is different from that described in literature.

The effects of metal ions and lanthanide complexes on the gel-to-liquid crystal phase transition temperature T-m of dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine liposomes have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method. The results show that the addition of metal ions to the dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) liposomes dispersions increases the main phase transition temperature T-m in the order of monovalent< divalent< trivalent cations. The enhancement of T-m is not large as increasing the lanthanide ions concentration. The enhancement of Pr3+ is larger than that of La3+. Remarkable differences were observed between La-citrate and La-lactate complexes at different pH solutions. At pH 7.0, La-citrate complex has no effect on the T-m, La-lactate complex, however, increases the T-m value, and the increase is larger than that of free lanthanide ions at the same concentration. The decrease of pH of complexes solutions lowers the phase transition temperature. We have preliminarily discussed the mechanism of the enhancements of lanthanide ions and the synergism of lanthanide ion and lactate ligand follow the ion induced dehydration of lipid and the potential effects of ion-lipid interaction.

The effects of lanthanide ions and their complexes of citrate and DTPA ligands on the fluidity of dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) bilayers have been studied by FT-Raman spectroscopy. the results show that lanthanide ions of lower concentrationn decrease the fluidity of acyl chains of DPPE bilayers and change the conformation of C C-C backbone from gauche to the trans lanthanide ions of higher concentration, however, increase the fluidity of acyl chains and increase the gauche population of C-C-C backbone. Lanthanide complex of citrate have no effect on the fluidity of acyl chains of DPPE bilayers in the region of experimental concentration, but La-DTPA complex increase slightly the fluidity of acyl chains. the results also indicated that lanthanide ion of lower concentration changed the lattice packing of hydrocarbon chains from hexagonal form to orthorhombic form, but it is still in hexagonal or distorted hexagonal lattice cell in the gel state in the presence of metal ions and lanthanide complexes of higher concentration

A number of metal-based anticancer drugs are designed to target nucleic acids. Therefore, the elucidation of their interactions with nucleic acids is important for rational design of new anticancer agents with high selectivity and low toxicity, which has been received much attention in this field. Lanthanide complexes have the potential to be therapeutic agents due to their unique magnetic, optical, electronic, and coordinate characteristics. However, lanthanide ions are easy to hydrolysis under physiological pH, which makes it difficult to study rare earth complexes nucleic acids selectivity. Recent studies have shown that natural amino acids can form stable complexes with rare earth ions under near physiological condition and the complexes have high solubility. This review summarizes the current progress in rare earth-amino acid complexes binding to nuclelic acids and their selectivity.

Alkane elimination reactions of rare earth metal tris(alkyl)s, Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Y, Lu) with the multidentate ligands HL1-4, afforded a series of new rare earth metal complexes. Yttrium, complex I supported by flexible amino-intino phenoxide ligand HL1 was isolated as homoleptic product. In the reaction of rigid phosphino-imino phenoxide ligand HL 2 with equintolar Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2, HL 2 was deprotonated by the metal alkyl and its imino C=N group was reduced to C-N by intramolecular alkylation, generating THF-solvated mono-alkyl complexes (2a: Ln = Y; 2b: Ln = Lu). The di-ligand chelated yttriurn complex 3 without alkyl moiety was isolated when the molar ratio of HL 2 to Y(CH,SiMe3)3(THF)2 increased to 2: 1. Reaction of steric phosphino beta-ketoiminato ligand HL 3 with equimolar Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 afforded di-ligated mono-alkyl complexes (4a: Ln = Y; 4b: Ln = Lu) without occurrence of intramolecular alkylation or formation of homoleptic product. Treatment of tetradentate methoxy-amino phenol HL 4 with Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 afforded a monomeric yttrium bis-alkyl complex of THF-free. The resultant complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectrum and X-ray diffraction analyses. All alkyl complexes exhibited high activity toward the ring-opening polymerization Of L-lactide to give isotactic polylactide with controllable molecular weight and narrow to moderate polydispersity.

Reactions of neutral amino phosphine compounds HL1-3 with rare earth metal tris(alkyl)s, Ln(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2), afforded a new family of organolanthanide complexes, the molecular structures of which are strongly dependent on the ligand framework. Alkane elimination reactions between 2-(CH3NH)-C6H4P(Ph)(2) (HL1) and Lu(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) at room temperature for 3 h generated mono(alkyl) complex (L-1)(2)Lu(CH2SiMe3)(THF) (1). Similarly, treatment of 2-(C6H5CH2NH)-C6H4P(Ph)(2) (HL2) with Lu(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) afforded (L-2)(2)Lu(CH2SiMe3)(THF) (2), selectively, which gradually deproportionated to a homoleptic complex (L-2)(3)Lu (3) at room temperature within a week. Strikingly, under the same condition, 2-(2,6-Me2C6H3NH)-C6H4P(Ph)(2) (HL3) swiftly reacted with Ln(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) at room temperature for 3 h to yield the corresponding lanthanide bis(alkyl) complexes L(3)Ln(CH2SiMC3)(2)(THF)(n) (4a: Ln = Y, n = 2; 4b: Ln = Sc, n = 1; 4c: Ln = Lu, n = 1; 4d: Ln = Yb, n = 1; 4e: Ln = Tm, n = 1) in high yields. All complexes have been well defined and the molecular structures of complexes 1, 2, 3 and 4b-e were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The scandium bis(alkyl) complex activated by AlEt3 and [Ph3C][B(C6F5)(4)], was able to catalyze the polymerization of ethylene to afford linear polyethylene.

Novel composite resins possessing good luminescent properties have been synthesized through a free radical copolymerization of styrene, alpha-methylacrylic acid and the binary or ternary complexes of lanthanide ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+). These polymer-based composite resins not only possess good transparency and mechanical performance but also exhibit an intense narrow band emission of lanthanide complexes under UV excitation. We characterized the molecular structure, physical and mechanical performance, and luminescent properties of the composite resins. Spectra investigations indicate that alpha-methyl-acrylic acid act as both solubilizer and ligand. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the lanthanide complexes show superior emission lines and higher intensities in the resin matrix than in the corresponding pure complex powders, which can be attributed to the restriction of molecular motion of complexes by the polymer chain networks and the exclusion of water molecules from the complex. We also found that the luminescence intensity decreased with increasing content of alpha-methylacrylic acid in the copolymer system. The lifetime of the lanthanide complexes also lengthened when they were incorporated in the polymer matrix. In addition, we found that the relationships between emission intensity and Tb (Eu) content exhibit some extent of concentration quenching.

A new kind of luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid material (denoted Hybrid I) consisting of europium 1,10-phenanthroline complexes covalently attached to a silica-based network was prepared by a sol-gel process. 1,10-Phenanthroline grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate was used as one of the precursors for the preparation of an organic-inorganic hybrid materials. For comparison purposes, the hybrid material (denoted Hybrid II) in which phenanthroline was not grafted onto the silica backbone of the frameworks was also prepared. Elemental analysis; NMR, FT-IR, UV/vis absorption, and luminescence spectroscopies, and luminescence decay analysis were used to characterize the obtained hybrid materials. It is shown that the homogeneity of Hybrid I is superior to that of Hybrid II, and a higher concentration europium can be incorporated into Hybrid I than Hybrid II. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (283 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0-4) transition lines as a result of the efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the EU3+ in Hybrid I. The number of water molecules coordinated to the europium ion was estimated, and the structure of the as-synthesized Hybrid I was predicted on the basis of the experimental results.
