NaA zeolite membrane was successfully synthesized on a ceramic hollow fiber with an outer diameter of 400 mum, a thickness of 100 mum and an average pore radius of 0.1 mum. The as-synthesized membranes were characterized by XRD, SEM as well as gas permeation. A continuous C NaA zeolite membrane formed after a three-stage synthesis. The membrane thickness was similar to5 mum. Gas permeation data indicated that a relatively high quality NaA zeolite membrane formed on the ceramic hollow fiber support. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. A series of La2O3-ZrO2-CeO2 composite oxides were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The final product keeps fluorite structure when the molar ratio Ce/Zr >= 0.7/0.3, and below this ratio only mixtures of La2Zr2O7 (pyrochlore) and La2O3-CeO2 (fluorite) exist. Averagely speaking, the increase of CeO2 content gives rise to the increase of thermal expansion coefficient and the reduction of thermal conductivity, but La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7 has the lowest sintering ability and the lowest thermal conductivity which could be explained by the theory of phonon scattering. Based on the large thermal expansion coefficient of La2Ce3.25O9.5, the low thermal conductivities and low sintering abilities of La2Zr2O7 and La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7, double-ceramic-layer thermal barrier coatings were prepared. The thermal cycling tests indicate that such a design can largely improve the thermal cycling lives of the coatings. Since no single material that has been studied so far satisfies all the requirements for high temperature thermal barrier coatings, double-ceramic-layer coating may be an important development direction of thermal barrier coatings.

A novel amperometric biosensor utilizing two enzymes, glucose oxidase (GOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), was developed for the cathodic detection of glucose. The glucose biosensor was constructed by electrochemical formation of a polypyrrole (PPy) membrane in the presence of GOD on the surface of a HRP-modified sol-gel derived-mediated ceramic carbon electrode. Ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FCA) was used as mediator to transfer electron between enzyme and electrode. In the hetero-bilayer configuration of electrode, all enzymes were well immobilized in electrode matrices and showed favorable enzymatic activities. The amperometric detection of glucose was carried out at +0.16 V (versus saturated calomel reference electrode (SCE)) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.9) with a linear response range between 8.0 x 10(-5) and 1.3 x 10(-3) M glucose. The biosensor showed a good suppression of interference in the amperometric detection.

A new class of polyoxomelalate (POM)-modified electrodes is fabricated by the sol-gel technique and demonstrated for nitrite sensing. The electrode material comprises an interconnected dispersion of graphite powder and a uniform dispersion of isopolymolybdic anions (Mo8O26) in a porous methylsilicate matrix. The chemically modified electrodes showed well-defined cyclic voltammograms with three reversible redox couples in acidic aqueous solutions because of the good physicochemical compatibility of Mo8O26 and the carbon ceramic matrix. The Mo8O26-modified electrodes show good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Prussian blue (PB) supported on graphite powder was prepared by the chemical deposition technique and subsequently dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to yield a conductive graphite organosilicate composite. The composite was used as the electrode material to fabricate a three-dimensional PB-modified electrode. PB acts as a catalyst, graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. The chemically modified electrode can electrocatalyze the oxidation of hydrazine, and exhibits a distinct advantage of polishing in the event of surface fouling, as well as simple preparation, good chemical and mechanical stability and good repeatability of surface-renewal. Hydrodynamic voltammetric experiments were performed to characterize the electrode as an amperometric sensor for the determination of hydrazine. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new type of inorganic-organic hybrid material incorporating carbon powder and alpha -type 2:18-molybdodiphosphate (P2Mo18) in a methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) based gel has been produced by a sol-gel process and used to fabricate a chemically modified electrode. The P2Mo18-doped carbon ceramic composite electrode was characterized using SEM and cyclic voltammetry. Square-wave voltammetry with an excellent sensitivity was exploited to conveniently investigate the dependence of current and half-wave potential (E-1/2) on pH. The chemically modified electrode has some advantages over the modified film electrodes constructed by the conventional methods, such as long-term stability, reproducibility, and especially repeatability of surface-renewal by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling or dopant leaching. In addition, the modified electrode shows a good catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate in an acidic aqueous solution. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation). Graphite powder-supported nickel(II) hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) was prepared by the in situ chemical deposition method and then dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to form a conductive composite. The composite was used as electrode material to construct a surface-renewable three-dimensional NiHCF-modified carbon ceramic electrode. Electrochemical behavior of the chemically modified electrode was well characterized using cyclic and square-wave voltammetry. The electrode presented a good electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidization of thiosulfate and thus was used as an amperometric sensor for thiosulfate in the photographic waste effluent. In addition, the electrode exhibited a distinct advantage of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing, as well as simple preparation, good chemical and mechanical stability. Zirconium-doped perovskite-type membrane materials of BaCo0.4Fe0.6-xZrxO3-delta (x = 0-0.4) with mixed oxygen ion and electron conductivity were synthesized through a method of combining citric and EDTA acid complexes. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O-2-TPD) and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) showed that the incorporation of proper amount of zirconium into BaCo0.4Fe0.6O3-delta could stabilize the ideal and cubic structure of perovskite. Studies on the oxygen permeability of the as-synthesized membrane disks under air/He gradient indicated that the content of zirconium in these materials had great effects on oxygen permeation flux, activation energy for oxygen permeation and operation stability. The high oxygen permeation flux of 0.90 ml cm(-2) min(-1) at 950degreesC, the single activation energy for oxygen permeation in the range of 600-950 degreesC and the long-term operation stability at a relatively lower operational temperature of 800 degreesC under air/He gradient were achieved for the BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.2O3-delta material. Meanwhile, the effect of carbon dioxide on structural stability and oxygen permeability of this material was also studied in detail, which revealed that the reversible stability could be attained for it. A mixed-conducting perovskite-type Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) ceramic membrane reactor with high oxygen permeability was applied for the activation of methane. The membrane reactor has intrinsic catalytic activities for methane conversion to ethane and ethylene. C-2 selectivity up to 40-70% was achieved, albeit that conversion rate were low, typically 0.5-3.5% at 800-900 degreesC with a 50% helium diluted methane inlet stream at a flow rate of 34 ml/min. Large amount of unreacted molecular oxygen was detected in the eluted gas and the oxygen permeation flux improved only slightly compared with that under non-reactive air/He experiments. The partial oxidation of methane to syngas in a BSCFO membrane reactor was also performed by packing LiLaNiO/gamma -Al2O3 with 10% Ni loading as the catalyst. At the initial stage, oxygen permeation flux, methane conversion and CO selectivity were closely related with the state of the catalyst. Less than 21 h was needed for the oxygen permeation flux to reach its steady state. 98.5% CH4 conversion, 93.0% CO selectivity and 10.45 ml/cm(2) min oxygen permeation flux were achieved under steady state at 850 degreesC. Methane conversion and oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing temperature, No fracture of the membrane reactor was observed during syngas production. However, H-2-TPR investigation demonstrated that the BSCFO was unstable under reducing atmosphere, yet the material was found to have excellent phase reversibility. A membrane reactor made from BSCFO was successfully operated for the POM reaction at 875 degreesC for more than 500h without failure, with a stable oxygen permeation flux of about 11.5 ml/cm(2) min. Composite coatings were obtained on A3 steel by hot dipping aluminum(HDA) at 720 ℃ for 6 min and micro-plasma oxidation(MPO) in alkali electrolyte. The surface morphology, element distribution and interface structure of composite coatings were studied by means of XRD, SEM and EDS. The results show that the composite coatings obtained through HDA/MPO on A3 steel consist of four layers. From the surface to the substrate, the layer is loose Al2O3 ceramic, compact Al2O3 ceramic, Al and FeAl intermetallic compound layer in turn. The adhesions among all the layers are strengthened because the ceramic layer formed at the Al surface originally, FeAl intermetallic compound layer and substrate are combined in metallurgical form through mutual diffusion during HDA process.Initial experiment results disclose that the anti-corrosion performance and wear resistance of composite coating are obviously improved through HDA/MPO treatment.

A systematic approach is proposed to obtain the interfacial interatomic potentials. By inverting ab initio adhesive energy curves for the metal-MgO ceramic interfaces, We derive interfacial potentials between Ag and O2-, Ag and Mg2+, Al and O2-, Al and Mg2+. The interfacial potentials, obtained from this method, demonstrate general features of bondings between metal atoms and ceramic ions.

The metal thin film delamination along metal/ceramic interface in the case of large scale yielding is studied by employing the strain gradient plasticity theory and the material microscale effects are considered. Two different fracture process models are used in this study to describe the nonlinear delamination phenomena for metal thin films. A set of experiments have been done on the mechanism of copper films delaminating from silica substrates, based on which the peak interface separation stress and the micro-length scale of material, as well as the dislocation-free zone size are predicted.
