A uniform submicron periodic square structure was fabricated on the surface of ZnO by a technique of two linearly polarized femtosecond laser beams with orthogonal polarizations ablating material alternately. The formed two-dimensional ordering submicron structure consists of close-packed submicron squares with a spacial periodicity of 290 nm, which arises from the intercrossing of two orthogonal submicron ripple structures induced by the two beams respectively. The result demonstrates a noninterference effect of two-beam ablation based on the alternate technique, which should come from the polarization-dependent enhancement of the subwavelength ripple structure and the large interval of two alternate pulses. This two-beam alternate ablation technique is expected to open up prospects for the submicron fabrication of wide-bandgap materials.

The route to grow InP-based heteroepitaxial structure for quantum cascade laser by molecular beam epitaxy is reported. Optimized growth conditions including substrate temperature, V/III ratio, growth rates, doping levels and interface control are summarized. Double crystal Xray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy disclose that our grown InP-based heteroepitaxial structure for quantum cascade laser has excellent periodicity and sharp interfaces. The modulation of superlattice band structure via periodic delta-doping in both well and barrier layers have been theoretically investigated, and the importance of interaction between the delta-function potentials in the well layers and those in the barrier layers on SL band structure have been revealed. It is pointed out that the energy dispersion relation Eq. (3) given in [G. Ihm, S.K. Noh, J.I. Lee, J.-S. Hwang, T.W. Kim, Phys. Rev. B 44 (1991) 6266] is an incomplete one, as the interaction between periodic delta-doping in both well and barrier layers had been overlooked. Finally, we have shown numerically that the electron states of a GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As superlattice can be altered more efficiently by intelligent tuning the two delta-doping's positions and heights. The mechanism of the formation of periodic segmentation cracks of a coating plated on a substrate with periodic subsurface inclusions (PSI) is investigated. The internal stress in coating and subsequently the strain energy release rate (SERR) of the segmentation cracks are computed with finite element method (FEM). And the effect of the geometrical parameters of the PSI is studied. The results indicate that the ratio of the width of the inclusion to the period of the repeated structure has an optimum value, at which the maximum internal tensile stress and SERR arise. On the other hand, the ratio of the max-thickness of the inclusion to the thickness of the coating has a threshold value, above which the further increase of this ratio should seldom influence the internal stress or the SERR.

A cyclic bending experiment is designed to investigate the interface fracture behaviour of a hard chromium coating on a ductile substrate with periodic surface hardened regions. The unique deflection pattern of the vertical cracks after they run through the coating and impinge at the interface is revealed experimentally. A simple double-layer elastic beam model is adopted to investigate the interfacial shear stresses analytically. A FE model is employed to compute the stresses of the tri-phase structure under a single round of bending, and to investigate the effect of the loading conditions on the deflection pattern of the vertical cracks at the interface. In the present paper, a simple mechanical model is developed to predict the dynamic response of a cracked structure subjected to periodic excitation, which has been used to identify the physical mechanisms in leading the growth or arrest of cracking. The structure under consideration consists of a beam with a crack along the axis, and thus, the crack may open in Mode I and in the axial direction propagate when the beam vibrates. In this paper, the system is modeled as a cantilever beam lying on a partial elastic foundation, where the portion of the beam on the foundation represents the intact portion of the beam. Modal analysis is employed to obtain a closed form solution for the structural response. Crack propagation is studied by allowing the elastic foundation to shorten (mimicking crack growth) if a displacement criterion, based on the material toughness, is met. As the crack propagates, the structural model is updated using the new foundation length and the response continues. From this work, two mechanisms for crack arrest are identified. It is also shown that the crack propagation is strongly influenced by the transient response of the structure.

We discuss the transversal heteroclinic cycle formed by hyperbolic periodic pointes of diffeomorphism on the differential manifold. We point out that every possible kind of transversal heteroclinic cycle has the Smalehorse property and the unstable manifolds of hyperbolic periodic points have the closure relation mutually. Therefore the strange attractor may be the closure of unstable manifolds of a countable number of hyperbolic periodic points. The Henon mapping is used as an example to show that the conclusion is reasonable.

Introduction The strange chaotic attractor (ACS) is an important subject in the nonlinear field. On the basis of the theory of transversal heteroclinic cycles, it is suggested that the strange attractor is the closure of the unstable manifolds of countable infinite hyperbolic periodic points. From this point of view some nonlinear phenomena are explained reasonably.

We have observed periodically aligned nanovoid structures inside a conventional borosilicate glass induced by a single femtosecond (fs) laser beam for the first time, to our knowledge. The spherical voids of nanosized diameter were aligned spontaneously with a period along the propagation direction of the laser beam. The period, the number of voids, and the whole length of the aligned void structure were controlled by changing the laser power, the pulse number, and the position of the focal point.

We analyse the operation of a semiconductor nanowire-based memory cell. Large changes in the nanowire conductance result when the magnetization of a periodic array of nanoscale magnetic gates, which comprise the other key component of the memory cell, is switched between distinct configurations by an external magnetic field. The resulting conductance change provides the basis for a robust memory effect, which can be implemented in a semiconductor structure compatible with conventional semiconductor integrated circuits.

We investigate theoretically spin-polarized transport in a one-dimensional waveguide structure under spatially periodic electric fields. Strong spin-polarized current can be obtained by tuning the external electric fields. It is interesting to find that the spin-dependent transmissions exhibit gaps at various electron momenta and/or gate lengths, and the gap width increases with increasing the strength of the Rashba effect. The strong spin-polarized current arises from the different transmission gaps of the spin-up and spin-down electrons. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

We investigate theoretically the spin-polarized transport in one-dimensional waveguide structure with spatially-periodic electronic and magnetic fields. The interplay of the spin-orbit interaction and in-plane magnetic field significantly modifies the spin-dependent transmission and the spin polarization. The in-plane magnetic fields increase the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling effect for the electric fields along y axis and decrease this effect for reversing the electric fields, even counteract the Rashba spin-orbit coupling effect. It is very interesting to find that we may deduce the strength of the Rashba effect through this phenomenon. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We derive the modified rate equations for an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring with two transversely coupled quantum dots (QD's) embedded in two arms in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that the interdot coupling between the two QD's can cause a temporal oscillation in electron occupation at the initial stage of the quantum dynamics, while the source-drain current decays monotonically to a stationary value. On the other hand, the interdot coupling equivalently divides the AB ring into two coupled subrings. That also destroys the normal AB oscillations with a period of 2pi, and generates new and complex periodic oscillations with their periods varying in a linear manner as the ratio between two magnetic fluxes (each penetrates one AB subring) increases. Furthermore, the interference between two subrings is also evident from the observation of the perturbed fundamental AB oscillation.
