Surface-modified Nafion (R) membrane was prepared by casting proton-conducting polyelectrolyte complexes on the surface of Nafion (R). The casting layer is homogeneous and its thickness is about 900 nm. The proton conductivity of modified Nafion (R) is slightly lower than that of plain Nafion (R); however, its methanol permeability is 41% lower than that of plain Nafion (R). The single cells with modified Nafion (R) exhibit higher open circuit voltage (OCV = 0.73 V) and maximal power density (P-max = 58 mW cm(-2)) than the single cells with plain Nafion (R) (OCV = 0.67 V, P x = 49 mW cm-2). It is a simple, efficient, cost-effective approach to modifying Nafion (R) by casting proton-conducting materials on the surface of Nafion (R).

Two gadolinium-sandwiched complexes with tungstosilicates, K-13[Gd(SiW11O39)(2)] (Gd(SiW11)(2)) and K11H6[Gd2O3(SiW9O34)(2)] (Gd-3(SiW9)(2)), have been investigated by in vitro and in vivo experiments as potential contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). T-1-relaxivity of Gd(SiW11)(2)was 6.59 mM(-1) . s(-1) in aqueous solution and 6.85 mM(-1) . s(-1) in 0.725 mmol . L-1 bovine serum albumin solution at 25degreesC and 9.39 T, respectively. The corresponding T-1-relaxivity of Gd-3(SiW9)(2) was 12.6 and 19.3 mM(-1) . s(-1) per Gd, respectively. MRI for Sprague-Dawley rats showed longer and more remarkable enhancement in rat liver after i.v. injection of these two complexes: 39.4 +/- 3.9% and 57.4 +/- 11.6% within the first 30 min after injection, 31.2 +/- 2.6% and 39.9 +/- 7.6% in the next 60 min for Gd(SiW11)(2) and Gd-3(SiW9)(2) at doses of 0.081 and 0.084 mmol Gd/kg, respectively. Our preliminary in vitro and in vivo study indicates that Gd(SiW11)(2) and Gd-3(SiW9)(2) are favorable candidates for hepatic contrast agents for MRI. However, the two complexes exhibit higher acute toxicity and need to be modified and studied further before clinical use.

The complexes [Cu(dnpb)(DPEphos)](+)(X-) (dnpb and DPEphos are 2,9-di-n-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline and bis[2-(diphenyl-phosphino)phenyl]ether, respectively, and X- is BF4-, ClO4-, or PF6-) can form high quality films with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 71 +/- 7%. Their electroluminescent properties are studied using the device-structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/complex/metal cathiode. The devices emit green light efficiently, with an emission maximum of 523 nm, and work in the mode of light-emitting electrochemical cells. The response time of the devices greatly depends on the driving voltage, the counterions, and the thickness of the complex film. After pre-biasing at 25 V for 40 s, the devices turn on instantly, with a turn-on voltage of ca. 2.9 V. A current efficiency of 56 cd A(-1) and an external quantum efficiency of 16% are realised with Al as the cathode. Using a low-work-function metal as the cathode can significantly enhance the brightness of the device almost without affecting the turn-on voltage and current efficiency. With a Ca cathode, a brightness of 150 cd m(-2) at 6 V and 4100 cd m(-2) at 25 V is demonstrated. The electroluminescent performance of these types of complexes is among the best so far for transition metal complexes with counterions.

Sequential deprotonations of meso-(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins (p-OHTPPH2) in DMF + H2O (V/V = 1:1) mixture have been verified to result in the appearance of hyperporphyrin spectra. However, when the deprotonations of these p-OHTPPH2 are carried out in DMF, the spectral changes differ considerably from those in the mixture mentioned above. At low [OH-], the optical spectra in the visible region are still considered to have characteristics of hyperporphyrin spectra. Further deprotonation at much higher basicity makes the optical spectra form three-banded spectra similar to those in the acidic solution. To clarify the molecular origins of these changes, UV-vis, resonance Raman (RR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) experiments are carried out. Our data give evidence that p-OHTPPH2 in DMF can be further deprotonated of pyrrolic-H by higher concentrated NaOH, due to an aprotic medium like DMF effectively weakening the basicity of the porphyrin relative to that of the NaOH, and coordinates with two sodium ions (except the sodium ions that interact with the peripherial phenoxide anions) to form the sodium complexes of p-OHTPPH2 (Na2P, to lay a strong emphasis on the sodium ions that coordinate with the central nitrogen atom), which can be regarded as the porphyrin anions being perturbed by the sodium cations due to their highly ionic character.

Four new iridium(III) complexes 1-4, with 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivative as cyclometalated ligand for the first time, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by NMR, EA, MS and X-ray diffraction analysis (except 1). The stronger ligand field strength of the dithiolate ancillary ligands results in higher oxidation potentials and lower HOMO energy levels of complexes than acetylacetone. The absorption spectra of these complexes display low-energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition ranging from 350 to 500 nm. Complexes with dithiolate ancillary ligand emit at maximum wavelengths of ca. 500 nm, blue shifting 17 and 11 nm with respect to their counterpart with acetylacetone ligand. The electrophosphorescent devices with 2-4 as phosphorescent dopant in emitting layer have been fabricated. All devices have a low turn-on voltage in the range of 4.5 and 4.9 V. A high-efficiency green emission with maximum luminous efficiency of 5.28 cd/A at current density of 1.37 mA/cm(2) and a maximum brightness of 2592 cd/m(2) at 15.2 V has been achieved in device using 2 as emitter.

A series of novel cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes bearing 2,4-diphenylquinoline ligands with fluorinated substituent were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and mass spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry, absorption, emission and electroluminescent properties of these complexes were systematically investigated. Electrochemical studies showed that the oxidation of the fluorinated complexes occurred at more positive potentials (in the range 0.57-0.69 V) than the unfluorinated complex 1 (0.42 V). In view of the energy level, the lowering of the LUMO by fluorination is significantly less than that of the HOMO. The weak and low energies absorption bands in the range of 300-600 nm are well resolved, likely associated with MLCT and (3)pi-pi* transitions. These complexes show strong orange red emission both in the solution and solid state. The emission maxima of the fluorinated complexes showed blue shift by 9, 24 and 15 nm for 2, 3 and 4, respectively, with respect to the unfluorinated analogous 1. Multilayered organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by using the complexes as dopant materials. Significantly higher performance and lower turn-on voltage were achieved using the fluorinated complexes as the emitter than that using the unfluorinated counterpart 1 under the same doping level.

Three new iridium (III) complexes with two cyclometalated (CN)-N-boolean AND ligands (imidazole, oxazole and thiazole-based, respectively) and one acetylacetone (acac) ancillary ligand have been synthesized and fully characterized. The structure of the thiazole-based complex has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Ir center was located in a distorted octahedral environment by three chelating ligands with the N-N in the trans and C-C in the cis configuration. By changing the hetero-atom of (CN)-N-boolean AND ligands the order S, O and N, a marked and systematic hypsochromic shift of the maximum emission peak of the complexes was realized. The imidazole-based complex emits at a wavelength of 500 nm, which is in the blue to green region. The tuning of emission wavelengths is consistent with the variation of the energy gap estimated front electrochemistry results. An electroluminescent device using the thiazole-based complex as a dopant in the emitting layer has been fabricated. A highly efficient yellow emission with a maximum luminous efficiency of 9.8 cd/A at a current density of 24.2 mA/cm(2) and a maximum brightness of 7985 cd/m(2) at 19.6 V has been achieved.

Transparent organic-inorganic hybrid monoliths containing rare-earth complexes (Eu(TTA)(3)Phen, Tb(Sal)(3)) were prepared via the sol-gel technique. It could be observed by transmission electron microscopy that the fluorescent particles are distributed in the matrix at the microscopic level. The matrix is composed of organic-inorganic semiinterpenetrating networks, i.e., PHEMA-SiO2 system. The fluorescence emission spectra of samples are similar to those from corresponding powdered Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes, and the half-widths of the strongest bands are less than 10 nm, which indicates that the monolith exhibits high fluorescence intensity and color purity. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra exhibit no obvious change with decreasing nanoparticle size of the rare-earth complex. The fluorescence lifetimes of samples are longer than pure Eu(III), Tb(III) complexes, respectively. Samples irradiated with an UV lamp (365 nm) are still transparent but become bright red and green in color due to fluorescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Sol-gel derived luminescent thin films doped with rare earth (RE) complexes were prepared using an in-situ synthesis method with a two-step hydrolysis process and the luminescence spectra were measured. Fluorescence Lifetime and thermal stability were investigated. The results show that a broad excitation band indicates the formation of RE complexes in the solid thin films. RE ions, which are restrained in a silica matrix, present longer lifetime and higher thermal stability than that in DMF/PVB films containing the corresponding pure complexes. An organic-inorganic hybrid solid, (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Dark green crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21, a = 24.164(5), b = 18.281(4), c = 11.877(2) Angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V= 5247(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, lambda (MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0331 for 5353 reflections). Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.69 degrees < theta < 25.04 degrees using the omega -scan technique. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full-matrix least squares on F-2 using SHELXL-93. The structure of this compound consists of discrete (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26 clusters, constructed from beta -octamolybdate subunits ((Mo8O26)(4-)) covalently bonded to two (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2+) coordination complexes via bridging oxo groups that connect two adjacent molybdenum sites. By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of Gd(acac)(3) (acac=acetylacetone), Gd(TFacac)3 (TFacac=1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone), the effects of fluorine replacement of hydrogen on the triplet state energy of the ligands were revealed. Fluorine can lower the triplet state energy of Hacac and make it more suitable for energy transfer towards the D-5(4) state of terbium. Organic electroluminescent devices (OELDs) with the corresponding trivalent terbium complexes as emissive layers were fabricated. Triple-layer-type devices with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium tin oxide)/PVK [poly(N-vinylcarbazole)]/PVK : Tb complex: PBD [2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole]/PBD/Al exhibit bright green luminescence upon applying a dc voltage. The luminance of a device with Tb(TFacac)(3)phen (1,10-phenanthroline) and Tb( TFacac) 3 as emissive layer is higher than that of the corresponding devices with Tb(acac)(3)(phen) and Tb(acac)(3) as emissive layers. The EL device with Tb(TFacac)(3)(phen) as emitter exhibits characteristic emission of Tb3+ ions with a maximum luminance of 58 cd m(-2) at 25 V.

Binary complexes of europium and terbium with N-propyl-4-carboxyphthalimide (NP) were prepared and characterized. The luminescence behaviors of the lanthanide complexes as well as their doped silica-based composites were investigated by fluorescence spectra. The results indicated that the lanthanide complexes showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower intensities in silica matrix than that of corresponding pure complexes. The lifetimes of the lanthanide complexes became longer when they were incorporated in silica matrix. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
