Charge transfer and bond ionicity of some monovalent, divalent, and trivalent binary crystals of A(N)B(8-N) type have been investigated using the self-consistent method. The method divides the binary crystal systems into two subsystems which contain only one kind of element each in physical space. The charge transfer values are obtained by adjusting the charge in a self-consistent way. Based on the obtained charge transfer values, an empirical formula for bond ionicity has been proposed. It has been shown that the present results for bond ionicity are in good agreement with the previous theoretical study delivered by Levine and Pauling. The results also indicate that a large magnitude of charge transfer (or less excess charge in the bonding region) gives rise to high bond ionicity (or low bond covalency); this agrees well with the viewpoint that the excess charge in the bonding region is the origin of the formation of bond covalency. The valences of Cu and bond covalencies in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6+y, have been investigated using complex chemical bond theory, This theory is the generalization of Phillips, Van Vechten, Levine, and Tanaka's scheme. The results indicate that the valences of Cu(1) and Cu(2) in our calculation agree well with those obtained by the bond valence sum method. The valences of Cu(1) and Cu(2) in our calculation also suggest that the holes introduced by Ca substitution only reside in CuO2 planes and there is a competing mechanism for the hole density in CuO2 planes between,Ca doping and oxygen depletion. These conclusions are in satisfactory agreement with experiments. The calculated ordering of covalencies is Cu(1)-O(4)>Cu(1)-O(1)>Cu(2)-O(2,3)>Cu(2)-O(1)>Ca-O>Y-O similar to Ba-O, regardless of the Ca doping level and oxygen content. [S0163-1829(98)03325-6].

From the chemical bond viewpoint, second-order non-linear optical (NLO) tenser coefficients of KNbO3 and LiNbO3 crystals have been calculated. By using the bond-valence theory of complex crystals and the modified bond-charge model, we were able to determine contributions of each type of constituent chemical bond to the total second-order NLO susceptibility. The tenser values thus calculated are in good agreement with experimental data. From the comparison of NLO tenser coefficients of these two crystals, we found that the major NLO contributors are KO12 groups and LiO6 octahedra not the distorted NbO6 octahedra. The difference between their NLO properties arises from their different structural characters, and the high coordination number of constituent elements in KNbO3 makes its valence electrons become more delocalised compared with those of LiNbO3. A systematic and quantitative research on the structure-property correlation has been carried out in KH2PO4 (KDP), NH4H2PO4 (ADP) and HIO3, based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the Levine bond charge model. We, for the first time, successfully solve the problems in the calculation of the nonlinearities of the complex inorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, which have O-H bonds in their crystal structures. We do this by introducing the bond-valence equation we have set up, calculating the nonlinear optical tensor coefficients d(ijk) of these three compounds, quantitatively determining the contributions of each type of bond to the total second-order NLO tensor coefficient (d(ijk)) of the crystal, and presenting the bond parameters and the linear properties of each kind of bond. For the first time, the NLO coefficient d(36) for ADP was calculated. All calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data. We found that O-H bonds also play an important role in these crystals, except for in the important anionic groups (PO4 groups and IO3 groups). All the results thus calculated show that our method is useful in evaluating the NLO coefficients of the inorganic NLO crystals containing O-H bonds in their structures, and should be a useful tool toward the future research into new nonlinear optical materials of this kind.

There is increased interest in measuring kinetic rates, lifetimes, and rupture forces of single receptor/ligand bonds. Valuable insights have been obtained from previous experiments attempting such measurements. However, it remains difficult to know with sufficient certainty that single bonds were indeed measured. Using exemplifying data, evidence supporting single-bond observation is examined and caveats in the experimental design and data interpretation are identified. Critical issues preventing definitive proof and disproof of single-bond observation include complex binding schemes, multimeric interactions, clustering, and heterogeneous surfaces. It is concluded that no single criterion is sufficient to ensure that single bonds are actually observed. However, a cumulative body of evidence may provide reasonable confidence. 0 2002 Biomedical Engineering Society.

Forced dissociation of selectin-ligand bonds is crucial to such biological processes as leukocyte recruitment, thrombosis formation, and tumor metastasis. Although the bond rupture has been well known at high loading rate r(f) (>= 10(2) pN/s), defined as the product of spring constant k and retract velocity v, how the low r(f) (< 10(2) pN/s) or the low k regulates the bond dissociation remains unclear. Here an optical trap assay was used to quantify the bond rupture at r(f) <= 20 pN/s with low k (similar to 10(-3)-10(-2) pN/nm) when P-selectin and P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1) were respectively coupled onto two glass microbeads. Our data indicated that the bond rupture force f retained the similar values when r(f) increased up to 20 pN/s. It was also found that f varied with different combinations of k and v even at the same r(f). The most probable force, f

Gravity may influence the velocity and temperature distributions, bouyancy may induce Rayleigh instability and the instability may be excited due to the change of free surface shape associating with gravity in the thermocapillary convection. These effects have been studied in the present paper. The results show that gravity may have an important effect in thermocapillary oscillatory convection even for the cases of small Bond number experiments either on the ground or in space.

This work is an experimental study of unidirectional bamboo-epoxy laminates of varying laminae number, in which tensile, compressive, flexural and interlaminar shear properties are evaluated. Further, the disposition of bamboo fibre, the parenchymatous tissue, and the resin matrix under different loading conditions are examined. Our results show that the specific strength and specific modulus of bamboo-epoxy laminates are adequate, the former being 3 to 4 times that of mild steel. Its mechanical properties are generally comparable to those of ordinary glass-fibre composites. The fracture behaviour of bamboo-epoxy under different loading conditions were observed using both acoustic emission techniques and scanning electron microscopy. The fracture mode varied with load, the fracture mechanism being similar to glass and carbon reinforced composites. Microstructural analyses revealed that natural bamboo is eligibly a fibre composite in itself; its inclusion in a plastic matrix will help solve the problems of cracking due to desiccation and bioerosion caused by insect pests. Furthermore, the thickness and shape of the composite can be tailored during fabrication to meet specific requirements, thereby enabling a wide spectrum of applications.

It is proposed in this paper that we can use frequency-modulated (FM) lasers to realize bond-selective chemical reactions or to raise the efficiency of molecular isotope separation. Examples are given for HF molecule and the C–H bond in some hydrocarbons.

The influence of pulsed bias light excitation on the absorption in the defect region of undoped a-Si:H film has been investigated. Ac constant photocurrent method has been used to measure the absorption spectrum. The absorption in the defect region increases with the light pulse duration. The analysis of obtained results does not support the existence of a long time relaxation process of dangling-bond states in a-Si:H.
