We propose a novel highly sensitive wave front detection method for a quick check of a flat wave front by taking advantage of a non-zero-order pi phase plate that yields a non-zero-order diffraction pattern. When a light beam with a flat wave front illuminates a phase plate, the zero-order intensity is zero. When there is a slight distortion of the wave front, the zero-order intensity increases. The ratio of first-order intensity to that of zero-order intensity is used as the criterion with which to judge whether the wave front under test is flat, eliminating the influence of background light. Experimental results demonstrate that this method is efficient, robust, and cost-effective and should be highly interesting for a quick check of a flat wave front of a large-aperture laser beam and adaptive optical systems. Redescription of Myxobolus pyramidis Chen, 1958, from gill lamellae of allogynogenetic gibel carp, Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch), is presented in this paper to complete Chen's description. The diagnostic characters of the myxosporidia are: ovoid round, greyish-white polysporous plasmodia, averaging (159 +/- 21)x(72 +/- 6.5) mu m in size; spore pyriform in front view with smooth surface and symmetrical valves, convex-shaped in sutural view with straight and thick sutural line, averaging (10.5 +/- 1.1)x(10.3 +/- 0.9)x(6.1 +/- 0.2) mu m in size; two equal pyriform polar capsules averaging (5.5 +/- 0.7)x(3.5 +/- 0.2) mu m in size with distinct intercapsular process and polar filament wounded in five to six coils. The histological effects of the pathogen were observed by light microscopy, and the parasite-host relationship was discussed.

This paper presents a fully integrated CMOS analog front end for a passive 900-MHz radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponder. The power supply in this front end is generated from the received RF electromagnetic energy by using an RF-dc voltage rectifier. In order to improve the compatibility with standard CMOS technology, Schottky diodes in conventional RF-dc rectifiers are replaced by diode-connected MOS transistors with zero threshold. Meanwhile, theoretical analyses for the proposed rectifier are provided and verified by both simulation and measurement results. The design considerations of the pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) demodulator and the backscatter modulator in the front end are also discussed for low-power applications. The proposed front end is implemented in a 0.35-mu m 2P4M CMOS technology. The whole chip occupies a die area of 490 x 780 mu m(2) and consumes only 2.1 mu W in reading mode under a self-generated 1.5-V supply voltage. The measurement results show that the proposed rectifier can properly operate with a - 14.7-dBm input RF power at a power conversion efficiency of 13.0%. In the proposed RFID applications, this sensitivity corresponds to 10.88-m communication distance at 4-W equivalent isotropically radiated power from a reader base station.

The valence band offsets of the wurtzite polar C-plane and nonpolar A-plane InN/ZnO heterojunctions are directly determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to be 1.76 +/- 0.2 eV and 2.20 +/- 0.2 eV. The heterojunctions form in the type-I straddling configuration with a conduction band offsets of 0.84 +/- 0.2 eV and 0.40 +/- 0.2 eV. The difference of valence band offsets of them mainly attributes to the spontaneous polarization effect. Our results show important face dependence for InN/ZnO heterojunctions, and the valence band offset of A-plane heterojunction is more close to the "intrinsic" valence band offset.

Using the Green function method, we have studied the cyclotron resonance of an electron interacting with bulk longitudinal optical(BO) phonons as well as surface optical(SO) phonons in a polar crystal slab at finite temperatures. It is found that the temperature dependence of magnetopolaron depends strongly on the strength of the magnetic field. The numerical results show that the cyclotron resonance mass of polaron in a slab is an increasing or decreasing function of temperature when the magnetic field is lower or higher than the resonant magnetic field region, respectively. The magnetic field and slab width dependence of cyclotron resonance mass are also studied in this paper. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a wide-band low noise amplifier, two mixers and a VCO with its buffers implemented in 50GHz 0.35 mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology for dual-conversion digital TV tuner front-end is presented. The LNA and up-converting mixer utilizes current injection technology to achieve high linearity. Without using inductors, the LNA achieves 0.1-1GHz wide bandwidth and 18.8-dB gain with less than 1.4-dB gain variation. The noise figure of the LNA is less than 5dB and its 1dB compression point is -2 dBm. The IIP3 of two mixers is 25-dBm. The measurement results show that the VCO has -127.27-dBc/Hz phase noise at 1-MHz offset and a linear gain of 32.4-MHz/V between 990-MHz and 1.14-GHz. The whole chip consume 253mW power with 5-V supply.

An optical receiver front-end for SONET OC-96 receivers was analyzed and designed in 0.18 mu m CMOS process. It consists of a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and a limiting amplifier (LA). The TIA takes a fully differential configuration, and regulated cascode (RGC) input stage is implemented. The LA was realized by five cascaded identical gain stages with active inductor load. The TIA achieved 4.2GHz bandwidth for 0.5pF photodiode (PD) capacitance and 1.2k 0 transimpedance gain. The LA achieved 5.4GHz bandwidth and 29dB voltage gain. The optical sensitivity is -19dBm at 5-Gb/s for a bit-error rate of 10(-12), and it dissipates 45.5mW for I.8V supply.

Ultra-broadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification is analyzed based the compensation of phase-mismatch, which is achieved by matching of both group-velocity and pulse-front between signal and idler by the combination of the noncollinear-phase-match and pulse-front-tilt. The results show exactly matching of both group-velocity and pulse-front is the important criterion for constructing an UBOPCPA. Its general model is developed, in which the group velocities, noncollinear angles. spatial walk-off angles, linear angular spectral dispersion coefficients and pulse-front tilted angles are suitably linked to each other. Finally, specific numerical calculations and simulations are presented for beta-barium borate OPCPA with type-1 noncollinear angularly dispersed geometry. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose a LBO-based ultra-broadband chirped pulse optical parametric amplifier employing pulse-front-matching to yield transform-limited sub-12-fs pulses. Measurement of the maximum possible gain bandwidth for the LBO-based OPCPA demonstrates more than 60nm gain bandwidth FWHM. For the generation of TL pulses by the use of this OPCPA, a suitable combination of OPCPA and PFM is first presented. The PFM pump geometry realizes tilt-free signal amplification, and permits this OPCPA to generate TL sub-12-fs pulses.
