The structural relaxation process of an inorganic glass (Li2O . 2SiO(2)) at an ageing temperature of 703 K for an ageing time of 1 h has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. A four-parameter model-the Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan (TNM)-model was applied to simulate the normalized specific heat curve measured. A set of optimized parameters, Delta h*/R,beta,InA, and x was obtained. Then the effects of variation of each adjustable parameter on the calculated specific heat were summarized. The curing reaction process of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) with 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride (Nadic) as curing agents was investigated using isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (IDSC) and nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DDSC) techniques. It was found that the curing reactions of E-PEK/DDS and E-PEK/Nadic are nth-order reactions but not autoaccelerating. The experimental results revealed that the curing reaction kinetics parameters measured from IDSC and DDSC are not equivalent. This means that, in the curing reaction kinetics model for our E-PEK system, both isothermal and nonisothermal reaction kinetics parameters are needed to describe isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes, The isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes were successfully simulated using this model. A new extrapolation method was suggested. On the basis of this method the maximum extent of the curing reaction (A(ult)) that is able to reach a certain temperature can be predicted. The A(ult) for the E-PEK system estimated by the new method agrees well with the results obtained from another procedure reported in the literature. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Using the wide-angle X-ray diffraction method, the variation of crystallographic parameters of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been studied in different heat treatment temperatures. All the reflections and their intensities as well as their Miller indices are presented in detail according to an orthorhombic system. The investigation indicates that the unit cell parameters a, b, c and the unit cell volume V systematically decrease with increasing heat treatment temperature. This variation is interpreted by the change of conformation of polymer molecular chains during thermal treatment. The results calculated from the formula of degree of crystallinity (W-c,W-x) for PEEKK, which was derived based on X-ray scattering intensity theory and the graphic multipeak resolution method, are compatible with the density measurement (W-c,W-d) and calorimetry (W-c,W-h) values. Para-para linked aromatic poly(amic ester) precursors of rodlike polyimide (PI) BPDA-PDA and polyetherimide (PEI) HQDPA-ODA were synthesized. The para-para linked poly(amic ester)s were employed in this work to obtain, in theory, full-imidized polyimides. The two precursors were mixed by dissolving them in N, N'-dimethyl acetamide and subsequently coagulating in methanol. After thermal imidization, the miscibility behaviour of the resulting composites has been studied by means of dynamic mechanical analysis (d.m.a.) and differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.). The composites show a single glass transition temperature (T-g) at both d.m.a. and d.s.c. in which the T-g increases with increasing PI content. These Tg values are reproducible in repeated heating cycles, suggesting the true miscibility of the blends. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

In this paper microcrystalline structures of polyamide-1010 (PA1010) mixed with neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) were studied by Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). Crystallization behavior was investigated by DSC. The transition and relaxation of macromolecules in the crystalline phase were explored by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). It was revealed that neodymium oxide plays an important role in PA1010 crystallization as a heterogeneous nucleating agent. It can improve the crystallization rate, reduce crystallite size and introduce crystal imperfections. The microcrystalline structure was imposed by the addition of Nd2O3 However, the heterogeneous nucleation effect obviously does not exert its influence on the transition and relaxation of macromolecules in the crystalline phase.

Poly(ether ether ketone)/poly(ether diphenyl ether ketone) blend containing 30 wt% PEDEK was used to investigate the melting behaviour of immiscible PEEK/PEDEK blends. The results measured from differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) showed that immiscible PEEK/PEDEK blends isothermally crystallized at a temperature between Tg and Tm-2 (PEEK's normal melting point) from the glassy state also exhibited the multi-melting behaviour like poly(aryl ether ketones) homopolymers. In addition, the low-temperature melting peak was independent of composition of poly(aryl ether ketones) blends and only associated with the thermal history. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Polyamide 1010/poly(propylene) (PA1010/PP) blends were investigated with and without the addition of poly(propylene)-graft-glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA). The effect of the compatibilizer on the thermal properties and crystallization behavior was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. From the results it is found that the crystallization of PA 1010 is significantly affected by the presence of PP-g-GMA. PP/PA 1010 (75/25) blends containing higher amounts of PP-g-GMA show concurrent crystallization at the crystallization temperature of PP. Isothermal crystallization kinetics also were performed in order to investigate the influence of the compatibilized process on the nucleation and growth mechanism. In the PP/PA 1010 (25/75) blends, concurrent crystallization behavior was not observed, even though the amount of PPg-GMA was high.

Blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with novel linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) samples in the whole range of compositions were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The LLDPEs are ethylene/octene-1 copolymers prepared with a single-site catalyst, with a narrower distribution of branches compared to Ziegler-Natta type polymers. It was found that cocrystallization or separate crystallization in the blends profoundly depends on the content of branches in the LLDPE, while the critical branch content of the novel LLDPE for separate crystallization is much lower than that of commercial LLDPE (prepared with Ziegler-Natta catalysts). This implies that the miscibility of linear and branched polyethylene is also affected by the distribution of branches. The marked expansion of the unit cell in cocrystals, which are formed by HDPE with the novel LLDPE, indicates that the branches are included in the crystal lattice during the cocrystallization process. The result is very helpful to understand the phenomenon that the unit cell dimensions of commercial branched polyethylene are larger than those of linear polyethylene.

Morphological studies of a series of propylene/ethylene sequential polymers have been carried out by permanganic etching and transmission electron microscopy, as an aid to characterization, in conjunction with differential scanning calorimetry. The materials were synthesized using a titanium-based catalyst, with propylene and either ethylene or ethylene/propylene mixture introduced successively, with the aim of examining whether a proportion of block copolymer is obtained. These materials show a complicated phase structure which does not simply reflect polymerization time but varies greatly, especially in regard to the order of introduction of the monomers, and their morphology differs in a number of ways from that of typical commercial materials. Comparison of the materials, as synthesized and after extraction with heptane, suggests that there is a certain amount of material which can compatibilize polypropylene- and ethylene-rich phases, but it was not possible to decide whether it does in fact have block structure.

The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy (OM). The blends exhibit a single composition-dependent glass transition temperature, characteristic of miscible systems, A depression of the equilibrium melting temperature of PHB is observed. The interaction parameter values obtained from analysis of the melting point depression are of large negative values, which suggests that PHB and PVPh blends are thermodynamically miscible in the melt. Isothermal crystallization kinetics in the miscible blend system PHB/PVPh was examined by OM. The presence of the amorphous PVPh component results in a reduction in the rate of spherulite growth of PHB. The spherulite growth rate is analyzed using the Lauritzen-Hoffman model, The isothermally crystallized blends of PHB/PVPh were examined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and smell-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The long period obtained from SAXS increases with the increase in PVPh component, which implies that the amorphous PVPh is squeezed into the interlamallar region of PHB.

Isothermal melt and cold crystallization kinetics of PEDEKmK linked by meta-phenyl and biphenyl were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in two temperature regions. Avrami analysis is used to describe the primary stages of the melt and cold crystallization, with exponent n = 2 and n = 4, respectively. The activation energies are -118 kJ/mol and 510 kJ/mol for crystallization from the melt and the glassy states, respectively. The equilibrium melting point T-m(0) is estimated to be 309 degrees C by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach, which compares favorably with determination from the Thomson-Gibbs method. The lateral and end surface free energies derived from the Lauritzen-Hoffman spherulitic growth rate equation are sigma = 8.45 erg/cm(2) and sigma(e) = 45.17 erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding q is determined as 3.06 kcal/mol. These observed crystallization characteristics of PEDEKmK are compared with those of the other members of poly(aryl ether ketone) family. An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) has been functionalized with acrylic acid (AA) by means of a radical-initiated melt process. Different degrees of grafting have been obtained by varying the overall composition of the reaction mixture. The influence of the grafting degree on the structure has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared analysis (FTIR), and wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. The results of the structural investigations suggest that the grafting preferentially occurs onto the ethylene sequences of EPM. After acrylic acid was grafted onto EPM, the grafted AA acted as nucleation agent; it caused an increase of crystallization temperature of propylene sequences of EPM-g-AA.

Analysis of the nonisothermal melt and cold crystallization kinetics of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) was performed by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny could describe only the primary stage of nonisothermal crystallization of PEEKK. And, the Ozawa analysis, when applied to this polymer system, failed to describe its nonisothermal crystallization behavior. A new and convenient approach for the nonisothermal crystallization was proposed by combining the Avrami equation with the Ozawa equation. By evaluating the kinetic parameters in this approach, the crystallization behavior of PEEKK was analyzed. According to the Kissinger method, the activation energies were determined to be 189 and 328 kJ/mol for nonisothermal melt and cold crystallization, respectively.

Poly(ether urethane) cationomers based on poly(oxytetramethylene), 4,4'-bibenzyldiisocyanate, N-methyldiethanolamine as chain extender, and acrylic acid/poly(acrylic acid) as quaternization agent were synthesized. Pyrrole (15 wt.-%) was polymerized in films of the ionomer containing CuCl2. The films were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The electric conductivity of the film without polypyrrole is 7.5 . 10(-12) Omega(-1)cm(-1), while incorporation of polypyrrole increases the conductivity to 4.5 . 10(-6) Omega(-1) cm(-1).

The modification of ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) has been accomplished by melt grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) molecules promoted by radical initiators. The resulting EPM-g-MAH and EPM have been used to obtain binary nylon 1010/EPM or nylon 1010/EPM-g-MAH blends by melt mixing. It was found that the EPM-g-MAH copolymer used as the second component has a profound effect upon the properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to a series of chemical and physicochemical interactions taking place between the two components. The interactions are due to the presence of the anhydride functionality on the copolymer and do not occur when this functionality is absent. The interaction has been confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and scanning electron microscopic.
