In this paper, the water relaxation enhancement behavior of Gd-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid(DTPA) in water and in aqueous solution of bovine serum albumine(BSA) has been studied. The T-1 relaxivity of Gd-DTPA in BSA solution is higher than that in aqueous solution. The results indicate that Gd-DTPA can integrate non-covalently with BSA mainly in forms of (Gd-DTPA) . BSA, (Gd-DTPA)(2) . BSA, for which the apparent equilibrium constant is 0.026 mmol(-1).L,0.0018 mmol(-2).L-2 respectively. This method would be used to study the interactivities between protein and contrast agent.

The spectroscopic feature of divalent Sm2+, Eu2+, Tm2+ and Yb2+ is discussed in this paper. Especially the spectroscopic properties of some berates containing tetrahedral BO4 group such as SrB4O7, SrB6O10 and BaB8O13 doped with these divalent ions are reported. When the divalent alkaline earth ion in these berates is replaced partially by the above trivalent rare earth ion, the charge carried in the produced defects can be used as reductant to reduce the doped rare earth ion into divalent state at high temperature even in air. Therefore, a convenient and safe method is provided to prepared phosphors doped with these divalent rare earths.

Six beta-diketone compounds, 1,3-bis(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanedione (1), 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(2), 1,3-bis(3-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(3) 1,3-bis(4-amimophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(4), 1-(4-amimophenyl)-3-( 3-amimophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(5) and 1,3-bis (3-amimophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(6) were synthesized, Their structures were characterized by IR, UV-Vis, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy, The percentage of keto tautomer, enol-keto equilibrium constant and enol tautomer ratio of them were also determined, The percentage of keto tautomer is increased in the order from compound 1 to 3 and decreased in the order from compound 4 to 6, which show the effect of substituent on the tautomer. The results of enol tautomer ratio of compounds 2 and 5 indicated that b-form of enol is slightly more favorable than its a-form.

The excitation and emission spectra of the BaLiF3:Ce3+ phosphors synthesized through solid state reaction have been measured. By investigating the properties of the excitation spectra we point out that the variation in the excitation spectra with the amount of CeF3 dopant results from the different patterns of charge compensation in the matrices. The vacancies of Li+ ions are the favorable charge compensation pattern at low concentration of CeF3 doped, but interstitial F- ions are the major charge compensation pattern when the concentration of CeF3 doped goes beyond a certain value. Composite polymeric electrolytes of PEO-LiClO4-Al2O3 and PEO-LiClO4-EC were prepared and the ionic conductivity by a.c. impedance was calculated using four different methods, and three kinds of representations of a.c. impedance spectra were adopted. The first is based on the Nyquist impedance plot of the imaginary part (Z") versus the real part (Z') of the complex impedance. The second and the third correspond to the plots of imaginary impedance Z" as a function of frequency (f), and the absolute value (\Z\) and phase angle (theta) as a function of f, respectively. It was found that the values of the ionic conductivity calculated using the three representations of a.c. impedance spectra are basically identical.

The interaction of microperoxidase-11 (MP11) with cationic lipid vesicles of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) induces an alpha -helical conformation from random coil conformations in solution and this change then makes heme macrocycle more distorted. DDAB-induced MP11 conformations were investigated by cyclic votammetry (CV), circular dichroism (CD) and UV-vis spectrometry. All results indicate that the binding of MP11 in solution to DDAB vesicles and the ordered structure formation are driven by mostly electrostatic interaction between negatively charged residues in the undecapeptide and positively charged lipid headgroups on the membrane surface. Upon binding to DDAB, its half-peak potential was also changed. The mechanism of the interaction between MP11 and DDAB was also discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

By using the average bond-gap model, the chemical bond properties of REBa2Cu3O7 were calculated. The calculated covalencies for Cu(1)-O and Cu(2)-O bonds in REBa2Cu3O7 compounds are 0.41 and 0.28 respectively. Mossbauer isomer shifts of Fe-57 doped in EuBa2Cu3O7-x and Sn-119 doped in YBa2Cu3O7-x were calculated by using the chemical surrounding factor, h, defined by covalency and electronic polarizability. The valence states and sites of Fe-57 in EuBa2Cu3O7 and Sn-119 in YBa2Cu3O7-x were identified.

Antibody was covalently immobilized by amine coupling method to gold surfaces modified with a self-assembled monolayer of thioctic acid. The electrochemical measurements of cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy showed that the hexacyanoferrate redox reactions on the gold surface were blocked due to the procedures of self-assembly of thioctic acid and antibody immobilization. The binding of a specific antigen to antibody recognition layer could be detected by measurements of the impedance change. A new amplification strategy was introduced for improving the sensitivity of impedance measurements using biotin labeled protein- streptavidin network complex. This amplification strategy is based on the construction of a molecular complex between streptavidin and biotin labeled protein. This complex can be formed in a cross-linking network of molecules so that the amplification of response signal will be realized due to the big molecular size of complex. The results show that this amplification strategy causes dramatic improvement of the detection sensitivity of hIgG and has good correlation for detection of hIgG in the range of 2-10 mug/ml. Individual hydrophobically modified ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HM-EHEC) molecules under different conditions were elongated using a new atomic force microscope (AFM) based technique-single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS). The critical concentration of HM-EHEC for micelle-like clusters at a solid/liquid interface was around 0.8 wt %, which is lower than that in solution. The different mechanical properties of HM-EHEC below and above the critical concentration were displayed on force-extension curves. Through a comparison with unmodified hydroxyethyl cellulose, substituent-induced effects on nanomechanical features of HM-EHEC were investigated. Because of hydrophobic interactions and cooperative binding with the polymer, surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) dramatically influence the elastic properties of HM-EHEC below the critical concentration, and further addition of SDS reduces the interactions between the hydrophobic groups and the surfactant.

Monolayer assembly of 2-mercapto-3-n-octylthiophene (MOT) having a relatively large headgroup onto gold surface from its dilute ethanolic solutions has been investigated by electrochemistry. An electrochemical capacitance measurement on the permeability of the monolayer to aqueous ions, as compared with its alkanethiol counterpart [CH3(CH2)(9)SH (DT)] with a similar molecular length, shows that the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of MOT can be penetrated by aqueous ions to some extent. Furthermore, organic molecular probes, such as dopamine, can sufficiently diffuse into the monolayer because a diffusion-limited current peak is observed when the dopamine oxidation reaction takes place, showing that the monolayer is loosely packed or dominated by defects. But the results of electron transfer to aqueous redox probes (including voltammetry in Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) solutions and electrochemical ac impedance spectrum) confirm that the monolayer can passivate the gold electrode surface effectively for its very low ratio of pinhole defects. Moreover, a heterogeneous patching process involving addition of the surfactants into the SAMs provides a mixed or hybrid membrane that has superior passivating properties. These studies show that the MOT monolayer on the electrode can provide an excellent barrier for hydrated ionic probe penetration but cannot resist the organic species penetration effectively. The unusual properties of the SAMs are attributed to the entity of the relatively large thiophene moiety between the carbon chain and the thiol group.

A novel type of potassium sensor based on the capacitance change of valinomycin-incorporated bilayer supported on a gold electrode has been developed and characterized. The lipid membrane was Formed by painted method and monitored simultaneously by capacitance variation. The capacitance of the electrode-supported membrane was found to be modulated by different concentrations of K+. Investigating the capacitance change allows a simple and specific technique for the measurement of potassium ion in solution. Especially, the homemade capacitance meter is, to our knowledge, used to monitor the bilayer membrane formation and detect K+ for the first time. It has been proved that this capacitance measurement is a very useful technique because it is simple and sensitive compared to the other methods.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate-molybdate complex and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) have been fabricated on a gold electrode precoated with a cysteamine self-assembled monolayer. The multilayer films have been characterized by optical spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance). Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is developed to monitor the layer deposition processes. It provides important information such as double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance. All obtained results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. The stability constant for complex of Pr(III) with adrenaline has been determined by potentiometric titration under biological conditions (37 degrees C and 0.15 mol/L NaCl). The absorption spectra of the Pr(III)-adrenaline system exhibit characteristic bands of Pr(III) at lower pH values. However, the charge transfer band which is due to the coordination of Pr(III) with adrenaline has been observed at higher pH values.

The relationship between the chemical displacement of the binding energy and the different chemical environment for 12 organic tin compounds was studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectronscopy. The different substituents in the compounds have influence on the tin outer electron and Sn-O bond, which was discussed by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectrum.

Ternary europium complex with dibenzoylmethane (DBM) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) was in-situ synthesized in thin SiO2/polyvinyl butyral (PVB) hybrid films by a two-step sol-gel process and characterized by;means of fluorescence spectroscopy. The luminescence spectra, fluorescence lifetimes and photostability were all investigated. The results showed that the hybrid films exhibited the characteristic emission bands of the Central rare earth Eu3+. In addition, Eu3+ presented longer fluorescence lifetime than in an ethanol solution and the complex had a higher photostability in the hybrid film than in the PVB film containing the corresponding pure complex.
