A supramolecular complex [Cu(phen)(2)H2O]{[Cu(phen)(H2O)](2)[C6AS]}center dot 2.5H(2)O (phen = 1,10'-phenanthroline and C6AS = p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene) has been synthesized under hydrothermal condition, and characterized by IR spectroscopy, TG analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the structure, unprecedented 1D ({[Cu(phen)(H2O)](2)[C(6)AS]}(2-))(n) coordination chains (exactly being belts) are stacked into some 2D layers by the pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions, which are further interconnected into a 3D extended structure by hydrogen bonding.

Supramolecular organized multilayers were constructed by multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with ferrocene-derivatized poly(allylamine) redox polymer and glucose oxidase by electrostatic self-assembly. From the analysis of voltammetric signals and fluorescence results, a linear increment of the coverage of enzyme per bilayer was estimated, which demonstrated that the multilayer is constructed in a spatially ordered manner. The cyclic voltammograms obtained from the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes coated by the (Fc-PAH@CNT/GOx)(n) multilayers revealed that bioelectrocatalytic response is directly correlated to the number of deposited bilayers; that is, the sensitivity is tunable by controlling the number of bilayers associated with ITO electrodes. The incorporation of redox-polymer-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT) into enzyme films resulted in a 6-10-fold increase in the glucose electrocatalytic current; the bimolecular rate constant of FADH(2) oxidation (wiring efficiency) was increased up to 12-fold. Impedance spectroscopy data have yielded the electron diffusion coefficient (D-e) of this nanostructure to be over 10(-8) cm(2) s(-1), which is typically higher than those systems without CNT by at least a factor of 10, indicating that electron transport in the new supramolecular architecture was enhanced by communication of the redox active site of enzyme, redox polymer, and CNT.

A more stably dispersing of multi-wall carbon nanotube composite (noted as PDDA-MWNT), which was obtained by wrapping the MWNT with poly (diallydimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA), was used for the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOD) and its bioelectrochemical studies. The morphologies and structures of the PDDA-MWNT composite were characterized by environment-canning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry were used to feature the GOD adsorbed onto the electrode modified by PDDA-MWNT composite. The immobilized GOD at the PDDA-MWNT films exhibited a pair of well-defined nearly reversible redox peaks and a fast heterogeneous electron transfer rate with the rate constant (k(s)) of 2.76 s(-1). In addition, GOD immobilized in this way retained its bioelectrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of glucose. The method of immobilizing GOD without any additional cross-linking agents presented here is easy and facile, which provides a model for other redox enzymes and proteins.

The supramolecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of C-60 by thiolated beta-cyclodextrin (CD) on gold surfaces were constructed for the first time using C-60 monoanion. The results indicate that monoanionic C-60 plays a crucial role in the formation of the C-60-containing self-assembled monolayers. The generation of C-60 monoanion and the formation process of C-60 SAMs were monitored in-situ by UV-visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The resulting C-60 SAMs were fully characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements. After the immobilization of C-60 by the SAMs of thiolated beta-CD, the film thickness increased by approximately 1 nm from 0.8 to 1.8 nm as determined by SE, demonstrating the formation of the supramolecular self-assembled monolayers of thiolated beta-CD/C-60. The new C-60 SAMs exhibited one quasi-reversible redox couple at half wave potential of -0.57 V vs SCE in aqueous solution containing 0.1 M KCl. The surface coverage of C-60 on the gold surfaces was estimated to be 1.1 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2). The XPS showed the assembly of C-60 over the thiolated beta-CD SAMs.

A new solid solution system of Al in WC, with the stoichiometry of (W1-xAlx)C (x = 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 0.86), has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction between W1-xAlx alloys and carbon at around 1673 K in vacuum. Environment scanning electron microscope, energy- dispersive analysis of X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma analyses are used to certify the formation of the products. The mechanism of the solid-state reaction is also discussed. (W1-xAlx)C is identified to crystallize in the hexagonal space group P6m2 (No. 187) and belongs to the WC structure type. The atoms of W and Al occupy the same lattice site (la site) in the cell of (W1-xAlx)C. The cell parameters for each specimen in the phase of W-AI-C are quite close to that of WC, while their densities are far lower than that of WC.

An original amperometric biosensor based on the simultaneous entrapment of acid phosphatase (AcP) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) into anionic clays (layered double hydroxides) was developed for the specific detection of As(V). The functioning principle of the bienzyme electrode consisted of the successive hydrolysis of phenyl phosphate into phenol by AcP, followed by the oxidation of phenol into o-quinone by PPO. The phenyl phosphate concentration was, thus, monitored by potentiostating the biosensor at -0.2 V vs Ag/AgCl to detect amperometrically the generated quinone. The detection of As(V) was based on its inhibitory effect on AcP activity toward the hydrolysis of phenyl phosphate into phenol. The As(V) can be specifically determined in pH 6.0 acetate buffer without any interferences of As(III) or phosphate, the detection limit being 2 nM or 0.15 ppb after an incubation step for 20 min.

A novel supramolecular inclusion complex of alpha-CD/C-60 was synthesized using anionic C-60. The reaction progress was monitored in situ by visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The obtained complex was characterized by UV-vis, C-13 NMR, MALDI-TOF, and cyclic voltammetry. The induction and dispersion forces are considered to be the major driving forces for the formation of a resulting alpha-CD/C-60(.-) inclusion complex.

The conformational transition of DNA induced by the interaction between DNA and a cationic lipid vesicle, didodecyidimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), had been investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and UV spectroscopy methods. We used singular value decomposition least squares method (SVDLS) to analyze the experimental CD spectra. Although pH value influenced the conformation of DNA in solution, the results showed that upon binding to double helical DNA, positively charged liposomes induced a conformational transition of DNA molecules from the native B-form to more compact conformations. At the same time, no obvious conformational changes occurred at single-strand DNA (ssDNA). While the cationic lipid vesicles and double-strand DNA (dsDNA) were mixed at a high molar ratio of DDAB vesicles to dsDNA, the conformation of dsDNA transformed from the B-form to the C-form resulting in an increase in duplex stability (DeltaT(m) = 8 +/- 0.4 degreesC). An increasing in T-m was also observed while the cationic lipid vesicles interacted with ssDNA.

By using the chemical bond theory of complex crystals, the chemical bond properties of REBa2Cu3O7 (RE = Eu, Y) were calculated. The calculated covalencies for Cu(1)-O and Cu(2)-O bond in REBa2Cu3O7 compounds are 0.41 and 0.28 respectively. Mossbauer isomer shifts of Fe-57 doped, and Sn-119 doped in REBa2Cu3O7-x were calculated by using the chemical environmental factor, h(e), defined by covalency and electronic polarizability. Four valence state tin ion and iron ion sites were identified in Fe-57 and Sn-119 doped REBa2Cu3O7-x superconductors.

An optical fiber bienzyme sensor based on the luminol chemiluminescent reaction was developed and demonstrated to be sensitive to glucose. Glucose oxidase (GOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were co-immobilized by microencapsulation in a sol-gel film derived from tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS). The calibration plots for glucose were established by the optical fiber glucose sensor fabricated by attaching the bienzyme silica gel onto the glass window of the fiber bundle. The linear range was 0.2-2 mmol/L and the detection limit was approximately 0.12 mmol/L. The relative standard deviation was 5.3% (n = 6). The proposed biosensor was applied to glucose assay in ofloxacin injection successfully.

A new type of organic-inorganic composite material was prepared by sol-gel method, and a peroxidase biosensor was fabricated by simply dropping sor-gel-peroxidase mixture onto glassy carbon electrode surface. The sol-gel composite film and enzyme membrane were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and EQCM, the electrochemical behavior of the biosensor was studied with potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) as a mediator, and the effects of pH and operating potential were explored for optimum analytical performance by using amperometric method. The response time of the biosensor was about 10 s; the linear range was up to 3.4 mM with a detection limit of 5 x 10(-7) M. The sensor also exhibited high sensitivity (15 mu A mM(-1)) and good long-term stability. In addition, the performance of the biosensor was investigated using flow injection analysis (FIA), and the determination of hydrogen peroxide in real samples was discussed. Antibody was covalently immobilized by amine coupling method to gold surfaces modified with a self-assembled monolayer of thioctic acid. The electrochemical measurements of cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy showed that the hexacyanoferrate redox reactions on the gold surface were blocked due to the procedures of self-assembly of thioctic acid and antibody immobilization. The binding of a specific antigen to antibody recognition layer could be detected by measurements of the impedance change. A new amplification strategy was introduced for improving the sensitivity of impedance measurements using biotin labeled protein- streptavidin network complex. This amplification strategy is based on the construction of a molecular complex between streptavidin and biotin labeled protein. This complex can be formed in a cross-linking network of molecules so that the amplification of response signal will be realized due to the big molecular size of complex. The results show that this amplification strategy causes dramatic improvement of the detection sensitivity of hIgG and has good correlation for detection of hIgG in the range of 2-10 mug/ml. A polythiophene film was electrochemically deposited on a Pt micro-plate electrode and investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in-situ reflection microscopic FTIR spectroscopy. The FTIR analysis showed that the electropolymerization of thiophene on the Pt surface was affected Lv the surface adsorption processes of thiophene molecules. Two adsorption modes were identified. Two structure models of the polythiophene chain were observed simultaneously. It was proposed that the good conductibility of the polythiophene film was originated from a co-vibratory equilibrium of the link part of model I and model II.

The interactions of lanthanide ions with sphingomyelin bilayers have been studied by using 2D NOESY spectroscopy and FT-Raman spectroscopy methods. The results indicate that lanthanide ions, as well as divalent calcium, combine mainly to the phosphate group in the polar headgroup and do not change the conformation of O-C-C-N+ backbone in the choline group of sphingomyelin bilayers. The polar headgroup is still extending parallel to the bilayer surface and O-C-C-N+ group is still in its gauche conformer.

Reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to separate and quantify aromatic diester-diacids isomers which arise from the opening selectivity of anhydride rings towards methanol. C-13 NMR spectroscopy was a supplementary tool to characterize the isomer structure. It was found that a meta-position attack is slightly preferred in pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), while the preferred position of an attack in bridged dianhydrides is determined by the chemical nature (donors or accepters) of the bridged group. The stronger its electron-withdrawing abilities, the lower the probability of a meta-position attack.
