The degradation and flame retardancy of polypropylene/organically modified montmorillonite (PP/OMMT) nanocomposite were studied by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and cone calorimeter. The catalysis of hydrogen proton containing montmorillonite (H-MMT) derived from thermal decomposition of (alkyl) ammonium in the OMMT on degradation of PP strongly influence carbonization behavior of PP and then flame retardancy. Bronsted acid sites on the H-MMT could catalyze degradation reaction of PP via cationic mechanism, which leads to the formation of char during combustion of PP via hydride transfer reaction. A continuous carbonaceous MMT-rich char on the surface of the burned residues, which work as a protective barrier to heat and mass transfer, results from the homogeneous dispersion of OMMT in the PP matrix and appropriate char produced.

Using CaCO3, metal oxides (all dissolved by nitric acid) and tetraethoxysilane Si(OC2H5)(4) (TEOS) as the main starting materials, Ca2R8(SiO4)(6)O-2:A (R = Y, La, Gd; A = EU3+, Tb3+) phosphor films have been dip-coated on quartz glass substrates through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the 1000 degreesC annealed films are isomorphous and crystallize with the silicate oxyapatite structure. AFM and SEM studies revealed that the phosphor films consisted of homogeneous particles ranging from 30 to 90 nm, with an average thickness of 1.30 mum. The Eu3+ and Tb3+ show similar spectral properties independent of R 3, in the films due to their isomorphous crystal structures. However, both the emission intensity and lifetimes of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in Ca2R8(SiO4)(6)O-2 (R = Y, La, Gd) films decrease in the sequence of R = Gd > R = Y > R = La, which have been explained in accordance with the crystal structures.

The instrumental spreading of a high temperature gel permeation chromatograph (GPC) was evaluated by coupling with a two-angle laser light scattering (TALLS) detector, using narrow polystyrene, polyethylene, and syndiotactic polypropylene samples. The determined spreading factor increased with increasing molecular weight of polymers, and no maximum for spreading 174 tor was observed in the studied retention volume, while the spreading factors for single low molecular weight alkanes are independent of their molecular weight. Neglecting of the spreading effect for GPC would not introduce much error in molecular weight calculation when high quality high performance columns were used, especially when equipped with a laser light scattering detector. The scaling relationship between radius of gyration and molecular weight of polymer, determined by GPC with a TALLS detector, was independent of the instrumental spreading.

In this paper, it was reported that the carbon-supported Pt-Ru(Pt-Ru/C) catalyst used as the anodic catalyst in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was synthesized with a two-step spray pyrolysis (SP) method using the Pt and Ru metal salt as the precursors and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with the different molecular weights (Mw= 200,600,and 1000 analytical reagent) as cosolvent. PEG as a cosolvent plays a crucial role in producing PtRu/C catalysts. It was found that the Mw of PEG could affect the electrocatalytic activity of Pt-Ru and the morphology of the Pt-Ru particles in the Pt-Ru/C catalysts prepared with this method. When the Mw of PEG is 600, the Pt-Ru particles in the Pt-Ru/C catalyst prepared with this method possess the small average size, narrow size distribution, uniform dispersion, and high electrochemically active specific surface area. The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst prepared with this method using the cosolvent PEG with Mw = 600 for the methanol oxidation is much higher than that of the commercial E-TEK Pt-Ru/C catalyst. Therefore, the two-step SP method is an excellent method for the preparation of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst used in DMFCs.

Conformational changes of beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) induced by anionic phospholipid (dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol, DMPG) at physiological conditions (pH 7.0) have been investigated by UV-VIS, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. The experimental results suggest that beta-LG-DMPG interactions cause beta-LG a structural reorganization of the secondary structure elements accompanied by an increase in alpha-helical content, and a loosening of the protein tertiary structure. The interaction forces between beta-LG and DMPG are further evaluated by fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence spectral data show that conformational changes in the protein are driven by electrostatic interaction at first, then by hydrophobic interaction between a protein with a negative net charge and a negatively charged phospholipid.

Bulk and nanoscale powders of YAG:Re (Re = Ce, Pr, Tb) were synthesized by solid-state and sol-gel method. The changes of spectra and energy level were studied. Compared with the bulk YAG:Re (Re = Ce, Pr, Tb) crystals, the lattice parameter of YAG:Re (Re = Ce, Pr, Tb) nanocrystals decreases. It is also found that the excitation peaks of 5d energy levels shift in nanocrystals. The physical reason for spectral and energy level changes is a comprehensive result from the shift of energy centroid of the 5d orbit, the Coulomb interaction between 4f and 5d electrons and the crystal field splitting of the 5d energy level.

Thin film phosphors with compositions of RP1-xVxO4: A (R = Y, Gd, La; A = Sm3+, Et3+; x = 0, 0.5, 1) have been prepared by a Pechini sol-gel process. X-Ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra were utilized to characterize the thin film phosphors. The results of XRD showed that a solid solution formed in YVxP1-xO4: A film series from x = 0 to x = 1 with zircon structure, which also held for GdVO4: A film. However, LaVO4: A film crystallized with a different structure, monazite. AFM study revealed that the phosphor films consisted of homogeneous particles ranging from 90 to 400 nm depending on the compositions. Upon short ultraviolet excitation, the films exhibit the characteristic Sm(3+ 4)G(5/2)-H-6(J) (J=5/2, 7/2, 9/2) emission in the red region and Er3+ H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)-I-4(15/2) emission in the green region, respectively With the increase of x values in YVxP1-xO4: SM3+ (Er3+) films, the emission intensity Of SM3+ (Er3+) increases due to the increase of energy transfer probability from VO43- to Sm3+ (Er3+). Due to the structural effects, the Sm3+ (Er3+) shows similar spectral properties in YVO4 and GdVO4 films, which are much different from those in LaVO4 film.

Polyethylene (PE)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ coordination polymerization using a MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst activated by AI(Et),. The catalyst was prepared by first diffusing MgCl2 into the swollen MMT layers, followed by loading TiCl4 on the inner/outer layer surfaces of MMT where MgCl2 was already deposited. The intercalation of MMT layers by MgCl2 and TiCl, was demonstrated by the enlarged interlayer spacing determined by WAXD. The nanoscale dispersion of MMT layers in the polyethylene matrix was characterized by WAXD and TEM. As a consequence, the crystallinity of the nanocomposite decreased sharply, whereas the tensile strength was significantly improved compared to that of virgin polyethylene of comparable molecular weight. The confinement of the nanodispersed MMT layers to molecular chain and the strong interaction between the nanoscale MMT layers and the resin matrix were thought to account for the decrease of crystallinity and the remarkable enhancement of strength.

We synthesized a kind of gold nanoparticle protected by a synthetic lipid (didodecyidimethylammonium bromide, DDAB). With the help of these gold nanoparticles, hemoglobin can exhibit a direct electron transfer (DET) reaction. The formal potential locates at -169 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Spectral data indicated the hemoglobin on the electrode was not denatured. The lipid-protected gold nanoparticles were very stable (for at least 8 months). Their average diameter is 6.42 nm. It is the first time to use monolayer-protected nanoparticles to realize the direct electrochemistry of protein.

Major, minor and trace elemental contents in northeast China soybeans were determined by using inductively, coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Three different sample digestion methods including two wet digestions, HNO3-HClO4 and HNO3-H2SO4 and a dry ash method were compared. Owing to the high oil content in soybeans, long time is needed and access acid should be added, with mixed acid digestion methods, which may result in higher sample blank. Therefore, the dry ask method would be more proper for the pre-treatment of soybean samples. Potassium and phosphorus are major elements in soybeans, so the effect of potassium and phosphorus on the other elements was investigated. Results showed that the potassium and phosphorus did not affect the determination. of other trace elements. There are not significant differences in trace elemental contents for the eleven northeast China soybeans.

Transparent poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA)/bentonite nanocomposites containing intercalated-exfoliated combinatory structures of clay were synthesized by in situ emulsion polymerizations in aqueous dispersions containing bentonite. The samples for characterization were prepared through direct-forming films of the resulting emulsions without coagulation and separation. An examination with X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that intercalated and exfoliated structures of clay coexisted in the PEA/bentonite nanocomposites. The measurements of mechanical properties showed that PEA properties were greatly improved, with the tensile strength and modulus increasing from 0.65 and 0.24 to 11.16 and 88.41 MPa, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed a very marked improvement of the storage modulus above the glass-transition temperature. In addition, because of the uniform dispersion of silicate layers in the PEA matrix, the barrier properties of the materials were dramatically improved. The permeability coefficient of water vapor decreased from 30.8 x 10(-6) to 8.3 x 10(-6) g cm/cm(2)s cmHg. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Matrix effects arising from ethanol, propanol, glycerol, acetic acid, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry have been studied. Addition of ethanol, propanol, glycerol, acetic acid, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into solution has an enhancement effect on the signal intensity of analyte with ionization potential between 9 and 11 eV. The ethylenediamine and triethanolamine have higher enhancement effect on the signal intensity of Hg than that of ethanol, propanol, glycerol and acetic acid. Addition of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into solution has a suppression effect on the signal intensity of Ph and Sr. The mechanism of the enhancement or suppression was investigated. The signal enhancement of Hg in the presence of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine is not caused by improved degree of ionization of Hg and nebulization efficiency. The suppression effects of Ph and Sr in the presence of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine are due to decrease of atomization efficiency of these elements. A method for the determination of Hg in the biological standard samples Ly ICP-MS was developed.

Single-colour and two-colour multiphoton resonant ionization spectra of uranium atom were studied extensively with a Nd: YAG laser-pumped dye laser atomic beam apparatus time-of-flight mass spectrometer in our laboratory. The energy locations of high-lying odd-parity levels in the region 33 003-34 264 cm(-1),mearured by a two-colour three-step ionization technique, were reported here. The angular momentum quantum number J was uniquely assigned for these levels by using angular momentum selection rules.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS),a highly sensitive inorgnic analytic technique, fits to determine ultra-nace rare-earth elements in human plasma. Under the optimized conditions detection limits for 15 rare-earth elements are in the range of 0.7 (for Eu)-5.4 (for Gd) ng.L-1. Indium as an internal standard element is used to compensate for matrix suppression effect and sensitivity drift. Three kinds of preparation methods, diluted with 1% HNO3, digested with HNO3-H2O2 and with HNO3-HClO4, are checked and compared, and the former is the simplest way to be measured. The samples diluted with 1% HNO3, stored in 4 degrees C, are very steady for 16 days. With the method, 11 healthy plasma samples in Changchun area of China are analysed.
