Ultrathin multilayer films consisting of the polyoxotungstoeuropate cluster K-12[EuP5W30O110] (EuP5W30) and poly( allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The (EuP5W30 /PAH) multilayer films have been characterized by small-angle X-ray reflectivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). From the AFM images, the thickness of the {PEI/PSS/PAH(EuW30/PAH)} multilayer film was estimated to be 6.5 nm, corresponding to an average thickness of ca. 1.1 nm for a EuW30/PAH layer pair. The photoluminescent behavior of the film at room temperature was investigated to show the characteristic Eu3+ emission pattern of D-5(0)-->F-7(J). The fluorescence behavior of the multilayer film is essentially identical to that of H-n[EuP5W30O110]((12-n)-) in a concentrated aqueous solution, except for the relative intensities and peak bandwidths. The occurence of photoluminescent activity confirms the potential for creating luminescent multilayers with polyoxometalates (see ref. 23).

Blend modified polyimide (PI) hollow fiber membranes were used in vapor permeation for gas phase dehydration of ethanol. Dry air sweeping operation was used and the dry air was supplied by a dehumidification membrane module of compressed air. An integrated membrane process was composed. The effects of some factors, such as the modification of membrane materials, the humidity and current velocity of sweeping air, the operation temperature, on the efficiency of dehydration were discussed.

The based membrane extraction of Th4+ and Yb3+ was studied in HBTMPP-heptane using a hollow fibber membrane. The separation method of Th4+ and Yb3+ was proposed by kinetics competition. The separation operation of Th4+ and Yb3+ mixture was carried out by two successive extraction and stripping simultaneously. The concentration ratio of Th4+ to Yb3+ is 16.74 in the stripping solution. The recovery and purity of Th4+ are 71.6% and 95.74% respectively.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation in the electrooxidation process of the amino-containing compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine monolayer on the GCE. The redox responses of various electroactive probes were investigated on the 4-ABA-modified GCE. Electron transfer to Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs was studied by both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis on the modified electrode. Changes in the solution pH value result in the variation of the terminal group charge state, based on which surface pK(a) values are estimated. The 4-ABA-modified GCE was used as a suitable charged substrate to fabricate polyoxometalates-consisting (POM-consisting) monolayer and multilayer films through layer-by-layer assembly based on electrostatic attraction. Cyclic voltammetry shows the uniform growth of these three-dimensional multilayer films. Taking K10H3[Pr-(SiMo7W4O39)(2)]. H2O (abbreviated as Pr(SiMo7W4)(2)), for example, the preparation and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer and multilayer film had been investigated in detail. This modification strategy is proven to be a general one suitable for anchoring many kinds of POMs on the 4-ABA-modified GCE.

A novel 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) monolayer film is formed on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amino cation radical method. Silicotungstic heteropolyanion (SiW12O404-, denoted as SiW12)-containing multilayer films have been fabricated on the 4-ABA modified GCE surface by alternate deposition with a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/+) (denoted as QPVP-Os). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray reflectivity (XR) have been used to characterise the as-prepared multilayer films. It is proved that the multilayer films are uniform and stable. The average thickness for a bilayer of QPVP-Os/SiW12 in the multilayer film is 30.2 Angstrom. The electrocatalytic activities of the multilayer films have been investigated on the reduction of three substrates of important analytical interests, HNO2, BrO3- and H2O2. Especially, the influence of layer number of the multilayer films on the electrocatalytic reduction of HNO2 has been investigated in detail. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two modification methods for multilayer formation, i.e. immersion growth and electrochemical growth, were studied comparatively for their influence on the electrochemical behavior and the electrocatalytic properties of the thus-fabricated SiMo11V-containing multilayer films. Electrochemical growth was proven to be a more suitable method than immersion growth in preparing uniform ultrathin multilayer self-assemblies with good functions. We investigated the effects of scan rate and pH on the electrochemical behavior of the monolayer and multilayer films. We also compared the electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3- and HNO2 by the multilayer films prepared by the two methods. Moreover, the influence of multilayer thickness and the identity of the outermost layer on the electrocatalytic properties were studied. Much higher catalytic currents appeared on the thicker multilayer films than those on the thinner ones. On the other hand, the catalytic currents became smaller when the multilayer films with SiMo11V as the outermost layer were covered with an additional quarternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) layer partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bypyridine) chloride (QPVP-Os layer). These influences were believed to be due to the different quantities of electrocatalyst loaded in the multilayer films and the blocking effect of the QPVP-Os outermost layer. We reported on the multilayer architecture containing diazo-resins (DAR) as polycations and polyaniline poly(aniline-co-N-propanesulfonic acid aniline) (PAPSAH) as polyanions held together by electrostatic interaction. Upon UV irradiation, the adjacent interfaces of the multilayer reacted to form a covalently crosslinking structure which greatly improved the stability of the films as confirmed by solvent etching experiments. These changes were confirmed by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. The thickness of the covalently attached films were characterized with small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) and a value of 30.0 Angstrom per bilayer was obtained. This type of film was further characterized by cyclic voltammetry which showed that the electroactive property of PAPSAH was still kept in the films after photoreaction. The assembly of alternating DNA and positively charged poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption has been studied. The real-time surface plasmon resonance (BIAcore) technique was used to characterize and monitor the formation of multilayer films in solution in real time continuously. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV-vis absorbance measurements were also used to study the film assembly, and linear film growth was observed. All the results indicate that the uniform multilayer can be obtained on the poly(ethylenimine)- (PEI-) coated substrate surface. The kinetics of the adsorption of DNA on PDDA surface was also studied by the real-time BIAcore technique; the observed rate constant was calculated using a Langmuir model (k(obs) = (1.28 +/- 0.08) x 10(-2) s(-1).

Multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition techniques between poly(diallyIdimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) on glassy carbon and quartz substrates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated the uniform assembly of PDDA/DNA multilayer films, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the elemental composition of the films. Moreover, the interaction of DNA in PDDA/DNA films with methyl green was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Electrochemistry and spectroscopy study on the interaction of microperoxidase-11 with lipid membrane
Resumo:
The interaction of microperoxidase-11 (MP11) with cationic lipid vesicles of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) induces an alpha -helical conformation from random coil conformations in solution and this change then makes heme macrocycle more distorted. DDAB-induced MP11 conformations were investigated by cyclic votammetry (CV), circular dichroism (CD) and UV-vis spectrometry. All results indicate that the binding of MP11 in solution to DDAB vesicles and the ordered structure formation are driven by mostly electrostatic interaction between negatively charged residues in the undecapeptide and positively charged lipid headgroups on the membrane surface. Upon binding to DDAB, its half-peak potential was also changed. The mechanism of the interaction between MP11 and DDAB was also discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two new ultrathin multiplayer films have been successfully prepared fi-om Keggin-type heteropoly acids H-4[SiW12O40] and H-3[PMo12O40] with polyelectrolytes PEI, PSS, and PAH, using the electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly, technique. The XR results reveal their film thickness at nanoscale (similar to 20 nm). According to the AFM images, it is believed that the surface roughness (rough degree of film surface) of the polyelectrolyte-polyoxometalate film greatly depends on the kind of polyoxometalates.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by transition metals Mn, ZnW11 Mn (H2O) O-39(8-) was successfully immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode surface grafted covalently by 4-aminobenzoic acid. The electrochemical behavior of these polyoxometalates was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry proves the uniform growth of the film. They exhibit some special electrochemical properties in the films, different from those in homogeneous aqueous solution. The effect of pH on the redox behavior of ZnW11Mn(H2O)O-39(8-) in the film was discussed in detail. The multilayer film electrodes have an excellent electrocatalytic response to the reduction of H2O2 and BrO3-, and to the oxidation of ascorbic acid.

Extraction and separation of Eu3+ and Zn2+ in sulfuric acid solution was investigated by hollow fiber membrane with cyanex 302 (bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid) in counter-currently circulating operation. Reaction mechanism of membrane extraction and effect of extractant concentration and H+ concentration in aqueous phase on the mass transfer coefficient were discussed. It can be concluded that Zn2+ can be extracted completely from Eu3+ sulfate solution according to the kinetics competing difference. In one extractor process, extraction percentage of Zn2+ was not completely and Eu3+ was not extracted. Extraction percentage of Zn2+ reached 94.92%, but Eu3+ only reached 8.59% after 100 minutes extraction in two series connectors and that of Zn2+ and Eu3+ reached 99.9% and 6.53% respectively after 40 minutes extraction in three series connectors.

A simple route to the fabrication of multilayer films containing Pd nanoparticles is described. Following layer-by-layer assembly of PdCl42- and polycation, QPVP-Os (a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/+)), on 4-aminobenzoic acid-modified glassy carbon electrodes, the three-dimensional Pd nanoparticle multilayer films are directly formed on electrode surfaces via electrochemical reduction of PdCl42- sandwiched between polymers. The growth of PdCl42- is easy on electrode surfaces by electrostatic interaction, and the assembly processes are monitored by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis spectroscopy. The depth profile analyses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verify the constant composition of the Pd nanoparticle multilayer films. Atomic force microscopy proves that the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles are uniformly distributed with an average particle diameter of 3-7 mn. The resulting Pd nanoparticle multilayer-modified electrode possesses high catalytic activity for the reduction of dissolved oxygen and oxidation of hydrazine compounds in aqueous solution.

Ferricyanide anion has usually been used as a marker of ion-channel sensors. In this work we first found that ferricyanide, itself, can act as a stimulus to regulate the permeability of sBLM prepared from didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (a kind of synthetic lipid) on a GC electrode. We used cyclic voltammetry and a.c. impedance to investigate this phenomenon. The interaction between sBLM and ferricyanide concerns time. Furthermore, we developed a sensor for ferricyanide anion. The ion-channel sensor is highly sensitive. It can detect ferricyanide concentration as low as 5 muM.
