Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals were prepared by combustion synthesis. The particle size estimated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was about 10 nm. A blue-shift of the charge-transfer (CT) band in excitation spectra was observed in Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals compared with bulk Y2O3:Eu3+. The electronic structure Of Y2O3 is calculated by density functional method and exchange and correlation have been treated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) within the scheme due to Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE). The calculated results show that the energy centroid of 5d orbital in nanocrystal has increasing trend compared with that in the bulk material. The bond length and bond covalency are calculated by chemical bond theory. The bond lengths of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystal are shorter than those of the bulk counterpart and the bond covalency of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystal also has an increasing trend. By combining centroid shift and crystal-field splitting, the blue-shift of the CT band is interpreted.

Preparation and physical properties of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) crosslinked by enhanced radiation have been studied through various methods. It was found that the most effective agent for irradiation-crosslinking was triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) among four kinds of polyfunctional monomers. Gel content (65.6%) was formed for EVOH-44 (content of ethylene is 44 mol%) at 200 kGy with 5% TAIC, but for EVOH-32 (content of ethylene is 32 mol%), only 37.4% gel content was formed under the same conditions. This result showed that the more the content of ethylene units comprised in EVOH, the easier the chemical bonds could be formed between different molecular chains. Tensile strength and elastic modulus increased after crosslinking at high test temperature and elongation at break decreased at the same time. Hygroscopicity of EVOH showed noticeable decrease after enhancement radiation-crosslinking.

Electrospinning was employed to fabricate polymer-ceramic composite fibers from solutions containing poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), Ce(NO3)(3)(.)6H(2)O and ZrOCl2-8H(2)O. Upon firing the composite fibers at 1000 degrees C, Ce(0.67)Zr(0.33)O(2)fibers with diameters ranging from 0.4 to 2 mu m were synthesized. These fibers exhibit strong resistance to sintering. They still have specific surface area around 11.8 m(2)/g after being heated at 1000 degrees C for 6 h.

A simple way to synthesize beta-Ga2O3 nanoribbons and tubes by electrospinning is introduced. The diameters of the electrospun fibers range from 150 nm to 2.5 mu m and their lengths reach up to several millimeters. The relationship among precursors, precursor concentrations, and crystal growth of beta-Ga2O3 nanoribbons and tubes are discussed. The structures of beta-Ga2O3 fibers have been investigated by various methods such as thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, Raman spectra, scanning electron micrograph (SEM), and transmission electron micrograph (TEM).

Electrospinning was employed to fabricate polymer-ceramic composite fibers from solutions containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and In(NO3)(3)center dot 4(1)/2H2O. Upon firing the composite fibers at 800 degrees C, In2O3 fibers with diameters ranging from 200 to 400 nm were synthesized. This indium oxide calcined at 800 degrees C is a body-centered cubic cell. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the as-formed In2O3 nanofibers were investigated. The In2O3 nanofibers show a strong PL emission in the ultraviolet (UV) region under shorter UV light irradiation.

A reactive type nonionic surfactant, monostearic acid monomaleic acid glycerol diester (MMGD) was synthesized in our laboratory. Grafting-copolymerization of linear low density polyethylene ( LLDPE) with MMGD was carried out by using beta ray irradiation in air in a twin-screw extruder. Evidence of the grafting of MMGD as well as its extent was determined by Fourier-transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The effects of monomer concentration, reaction temperature and screw run speed on degree of grafting were studied systematically. The thermal behavior of LLDPE-g-MMGD was investigated by using differential scanning calorimety ( DSC). Compared with neat LLDPE, the crystallization temperature ( Tc) of LLDPE-g-MMGD increased about 3 degrees C, and the melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) decreased with increase of MMGD content. It showed that the grafted MMGD monomer onto LLDPE acted as a nucleating agent. The tensile properties and light transmission of blown films were determined. Comparing with neat LLDPE film, no obvious changes could be found for the tensile strength, elongation at break and right angle tearing strength of LLDPE-g-MMGD film. The wettability is expressed by the water contact angle. With an increasing percentage of MMGD, the contact angles of water on film surface of LLDPE- g-MMGD decrease monotonically.
