In the investigation of effect of KSCN on the partitioning of lysozyme in PEG2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system, it was found that the KSCN could alter the pH difference between the two phases. and thus affect the partition of lysozyme. The relationship between partition coefficients of lysozyme and pH differences between two phases was discussed.

A novel method for the sensitive and selective determination of peroxydisulfate was proposed. It was based on an electrochemiluminescent method with Cr(bpy)(3)(3+). The applied potential was set at -0.5 V in Cr(bpy)(3)(3+) system which was much more positive than those in Ru(bpz)(3)(2+) and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) systems. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 7-100 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.993. The relative standard deviation was 2% for 10 replicate injections of 0.01 mol l(-1) S2O82- solution. The detection limit (S/N=3) was 1 mu mol l(-1). The method was successfully applied to determination of peroxydisulfate in phase transfer catalysis. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Water insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) was micronized into narrowly distributed stable nanoparticles. The biodegradation of such PCL nanoparticles in the presence of the enzyme, Lipase PS, was monitored by using laser light scattering because the scattering intensity is directly related to the particle concentration. The PCL and enzyme concentration dependence of the biodegradation rate supports a heterogeneous catalytic kinetics in which we have introduced an additional equilibrium between the inactive and active enzyme/substrate complexes. The initial rate equation derived on the basis of this mechanism was used to successfully explain the influence of surfactant, pH and temperature on the enzymatic biodegradation. Our results confirmed that both the adsorption and the enzymatic catalysis were important for the biodegradation of the PCL nanoparticles. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four phenothiazines, promethazine, dioxypromethazine, chlorpromazine, and trifluoperazine have been separated by capillary electrophoresis using N, N, -dimethylformamide (DMF) as separation medium with UV absorbance detection. High voltage and concentrated buffer were used with small current and low electroosmosis. Good resolution and high column efficiency were obtained. Separation selectivity in DMI; was different from that in water because of the different solvation interactions. The influence of buffer composition on separation selectivities and electroosmosis were also studied.

Ce4+ extraction rate from aqueous sulphate solutions by Cyanex923 in heptane was studied using a constant interfacial cell with laminar flow at 30 degreesC. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions were chosen and the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction was minimized. Cerium extraction rate was measured at different chemical composition by varying the concentrations of hydrogen ion, sulphate and Cyanex923. A cerium-Cyanex923(B) extractive is formed at the interface. The data were analyszed in terms of pseudo-first order constants and a reaction mechanism was developed.

Extraction and separation of Eu3+ and Zn2+ in sulfuric acid solution was investigated by hollow fiber membrane with cyanex 302 (bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid) in counter-currently circulating operation. Reaction mechanism of membrane extraction and effect of extractant concentration and H+ concentration in aqueous phase on the mass transfer coefficient were discussed. It can be concluded that Zn2+ can be extracted completely from Eu3+ sulfate solution according to the kinetics competing difference. In one extractor process, extraction percentage of Zn2+ was not completely and Eu3+ was not extracted. Extraction percentage of Zn2+ reached 94.92%, but Eu3+ only reached 8.59% after 100 minutes extraction in two series connectors and that of Zn2+ and Eu3+ reached 99.9% and 6.53% respectively after 40 minutes extraction in three series connectors.

The effect of potassium thiocyanate on the partitioning of lysozyme and BSA in polyethylene glycol 2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system has been investigated. As a result of the addition of potassium thiocyanate to the PEG/ammonium sulfate system, the PEG/mixed salts aqueous two-phase system was formed. It was found that the potassium thiocyanate could alter the pH difference between the two phases, and, thus, influence the partition coefficients of the differently charged proteins. The relationship between partition coefficient of the proteins and pH difference between two phases has been discussed. It was proposed that the pH difference between two phases could be employed as the measurement of electrostatic driving force for the partitioning of charged proteins in polyethylene glycol 2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system.

A novel method for the highly sensitive determination of perchlorate was proposed. It was based on solvent extraction in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) followed by Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescent determination. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 0.1 to 10 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit (S/N = 3) was 5.0 x 10(-8) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation for 10 replicates of 1 mu mol l(-1) perchlorate was 1.6%. Interference studies suggest that this method is selective for the determination of perchlorate. Application of this method to the highly sensitive determination of other anions is suggested. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients were measured for butylamine in heavy water (D2O) in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz and at concentrations from 0.0278 to 2.5170 mol dm(-3) at 25 degrees C; two kinds of relaxation processes were observed. One was found in relatively dilute solutions (up to 0.5 mol dm(-3)), which was attributed to the hydrolysis of butylamine. In order to compare the results, absorption measurements were also carried out in light water (H2O). The rate and thermodynamic parameters were determined from the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength. The isotope effects on the diffusion-controlled reaction were estimated and the stability of the intermediate of the hydrolysis was considered while comparing it with the results for propylamine in H2O and D2O. Another relaxation process was observed at concentrations greater than 1 mol dm(-3) in D2O. In order to examine the solution characteristics, proton NMR measurements for butylamine were also carried out in D2O. The chemical shifts for the gamma- and delta-proton in butylamine molecule indicate the existence of an aggregate. From profiles of the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength of sound absorption, the source of the relaxation was attributed to an association-dissociation reaction, perhaps, associated with a hydrophobic interaction. The aggregation number, the forward and reverse rate constants and the standard volume change of the reaction were determined. It was concluded from a comparison with the results in H2O that the hydrophobic interaction of butylamine in D2O is stronger than that in H2O. Also, the isotope effect on this reaction was interpreted in terms of the solvent structure.

Separation of Th4+ and RE3+ was investigated by hollow fiber membrane extraction with N1923 in countercurrent recirculating operation. The effect of Hf concentration in aqueous phase and flow rates of aqueous and organic phases on mass transfer coefficient was tested. Then the extraction of Th4+ from RE sulfate obtained from Baotou ore was carried out. The results obtained show that the mass transfer coefficient of Th4+ changes with the flow rate of aqueous phase, but does not change with the flow rate of organic phase and H+ concentration in aqueous phase, which suggests that the mass transfer rate of Th4+ is controlled bg that in the water critical layer, The mass transfer rate of RE3+ does not change with the flow rate of water phase, changes a little with the flow rate of organic phase, and changes with H+ concentration, which suggests that the mass transfer rate is controlled by their reaction rate with N1923. Th4+ could be extracted completely in 8 h from RE sulfate solution of Baotou ore with relatively less extraction of RE3+. So the separation of radioactive element under the sealed condition could be done.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. Separations of phenothiazines, promethazine(PZ), dioxypromethazine (OZ), chlorpromazine(CZ), trifluoperazine(TfZ) and thioridazine(TZ) by capillary electrophoresis in water and FA media were carried out and compared. Thus different selectivity and resolution were observed as media varying from water to FA. Migration order was PZ, OZ, CZ and TZ in water but (TZ+PZ), CZ and OZ in FA, when the same buffer, 25 mmol/L Tris and 25 mmol/L citric acid, was used. It also has been observed that pH has great effect on selectivity both in water and FA and a possible explanation was given. Separation efficiency was higher in FA media than in water because of the permission of high voltage applied. For all separations in FA 30 kV was applied, and when 25 mmol/L Tris was used as buffer, current was only 20 mu A and complete separation of TZ, CZ, PZ and OZ was achieved with effencicy higher than 3.5 x 10(5) theoretical plates for all analytes. The high performance of capillary electrophoresis in FA suggests that FA is an excellent media separation.

In order to develop photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) imaged in alkaline aqueous solution, a photosensitive diamine and relevant polymer containing conjugated double bonds in the main chain have been synthesized. The photosensitive characteristics and thermal stability of the polymers were investigated. These polymers possess good thermal stability and sensitivity to UV irradiation, and could be used to form a PSPI resist using alkaline aqueous solution as developer. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) of dimethylferrocene (DMFc) was estimated using cyclic voltammetric peak potential separations taken typically in a mixed diffusion geometry regime in a polyelectrolyte, and the diffusion coefficient (D) of DMFc was obtained using a steady-state voltammogram. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant and diffusion coefficient are both smaller by about 100-fold in the polymeric solvent than in the monomeric solvent. The results are in agreement with the difference of longitudinal dielectric relaxation time (tau(L)) in the two kinds of solvents, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and CH3CN, indicating that k(s) varies inversely with tau(L); k(s), is proportional to D of DMFc. Both D and k(s) of DMFc in PEG containing different supporting electrolytes and at different temperatures have been estimated. These results show that D and k(s) of DMFc increase with increasing temperature in the polyelectrolyte, whereas they vary only slightly with changing the supporting electrolyte.

The cleavage and formation of the di sulfide bond of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) were examined in an aqueous solution of pH value from 0 to 14 with and without polyaniline (PAn), The redox reaction of DMcT was accelerated by PAn in acidic condition. The cell using this anodic material was set-up and characterized in aqueous electrolyte.
