A novel "bottom-up" approach to highly controllable nanoelectrode ensembles (NEEs) has been developed using colloidal nanoparticle self-assembly techniques. Ibis solution-based strategy allows flexible control over nanoelectrode size, shape, and interspacing of the as-prepared NEEs. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was proved to be a powerful tool to monitor the NEE topography, which yields parameters that can be used to calculate the fractional nanoelectrode area of the NEEs. AFM, ac impedance, and cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that most of nanoelectrodes on the NEEs (at least by 9-min self-assembly) are not diffusionally isolated under conventional ac frequency range and scan rates. As a result, the NEEs behave as "nanoelectrode-patch" assemblies. Besides, the as-prepared NEEs by different self-assembling times show an adjustable sensitivity to heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics, which may be helpful to sensor applications. Like these NEEs constructed by other techniques, the present NEEs prepared by chemical self-assembly also exhibit the enhancement of electroanalytical detection limit consistent with NEE theory prediction.

CTAB-stabilized silver nanoparticles were synthesized by NaBH4 reduction. The as-prepared nanoparticles can be self-assembled on 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) modified gold electrode, which was supported strongly by XPS measurements. Exceptional long-term stability of the as-prepared colloidal silver aqueous solution and the desorption of silver nanoparticle ensemble on MPA after alcohol rinsing proved that these CTAB molecules adsorbed on silver core formed interdigitated bilayer structure. DPV and differential capacitance measurements were performed to characterize the as-prepared silver nanoparticle ensemble. and the interesting quantized capacitance charging behaviors were observed.

Adsorption of a monolayer of didecanoyl-L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (DDPC) from dispersions of small unilamellar vesicles onto hydrophobic surfaces was investigated by mean of cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The hydrophobic surfaces were self-assembled monolayers of 2-mereapto-3-n-octylthiophene (MOT) on gold. One characteristic of the MOT monolayer is its permeability to organic molecules in aqueous solution, thus providing a more energetically favorable hydrophobic surface for the addition of phospholipid vesicles. The kinetics of the lipid monolayer formation were followed by measuring the time-dependent interfacial capacitance. Unusual values of thickness and capacitance of the MOT/ DDPC bilayers were observed. An interdigitating conformation of the bilayer structure was proposed to interpret the experimental results, The horseradish peroxidase reconstituted into the bilayer demonstrated the expected protein activity, showing practical use in research and in biosensor application.

The acid-base equilibrium of self-assembly monolayer(SAM) of mercaptopropionic acid on gold electrode was studied by capacitance titration. The change of capacitance was due to protonation and deprotonation of the modified electrode surface. This method can be used to measure pH value in solution and capacitance of solid/liquid on SAMs surface synchronously. The shift of pK(a) was observed during the experiment as previous reports. The factors that affect the capacitance measurement were discussed in detail.

We have employed several techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectrometry, small-angle X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, to characterize the formation processes and interfacial features of ultrathin multilayer films of silicotungstate and a cationic redox polymer on cysteamine-coated Au electrodes self-assembled monolayers. All of these techniques confirm that the multilayer films are built up stepwise as well as uniformly in a layer-by-layer fashion. In particular, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is successfully used to monitor the multilayer deposition processes. It has been proved that the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is a very useful technique in characterization of multilayer films because it provides valuable information about the interfacial impedance features.

A novel method for fabrication of horseradish peroxidase biosensor has been developed by self-assembling gold nanoparticles to a thiol-containing sol-gel network. A cleaned gold electrode was first immersed in a hydrolyzed (3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane (MPS) sol-gel solution to assemble three-dimensional silica gel, and then gold nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the thiol groups of the sol-gel network. Finally, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was adsorbed onto the surface of the gold nanoparticles. The distribution of gold nanoparticles and HRP was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The immobilized horseradish peroxidase exhibited direct electrochemical behavior toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The performance and factors influencing the performance of the resulting biosensor were studied in detail. The resulting biosensor exhibited fast amperometric response (2.5 s) to H2O2. The detection limit of the biosensor was 2.0 mumol L-1, and the linear range was from 5.0 mumol L-1 to 10.0 mmol L-1. Moreover, the studied biosensor exhibited high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and long-term stability.

Gold nanoparticles with size 3-10 nm (diameter) were prepared by the reduction of HAuCl4 in a CTAB/octane + 1-butanol/H2O reverse micelle system using NaBH4 as the reducing agent. The as-formed gold nanoparticle colloid was characterized by UV/vis absorption spectrum and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Various capping ligands, such as alkylthiols with different chain length and shape, trioctylphosphine (TOP), and pyridine are used to passivate the gold nanoparticles for the purpose of self-organization into superstructures. It is shown that the ligands have a great influence on the self-organization of gold nanoparticles into superlattices, and dodecanethiol C12H25SH is confirmed to be the best ligand for the self-organization. Self-organization of C12H25SH-capped gold nanoparticles into 1D, 2D and 3D superlattices has been observed on the carbon-coated copper grid by TEM without using any selective precipitation process.

A conductive carbon ceramic composite electrode (CCE) comprised of cc-type 1:12 phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) and carbon powder in an organically modified silicate matrix was fabricated using a sol-gel method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and Osteryoung square-wave voltammetry. Osteryoung square-wave voltammograms of the modified electrode immersed in different acidic aqueous solutions present the dependence of current and redox potential on pH. The PMo12-doped CCE shows more reversible reaction kinetics, good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling or dopant leaching. Moreover, the modified electrode shows good catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate.

By means of non-aqueous reduction of pipsyl chloride followed by treatment with K2CO3 and then reacting with acetyl chloride or benzyl chloride, S-acetyl/benzyl -4-iodothiophenols were obtained in a one-pot procedure with yield as high as 90%. These S-protected arenethiols are very important intermediates to synthesize self-assembled molecular wires.

Nanogold colloidal solutions are prepared by the reduction of HAuClO4 with sodium citrate and sodium borohydride. 4-Aminothiophenol (ATP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are formed on gold(lll) surface, on which gold nanoparticles are immobilized and a sub-monolayer of the particles appears. This sub-monolayer of gold nanoparticles is characterized with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and a dual energy barrier tunneling model is proposed to explain the imageability of the gold nanoparticles by STM. This model can also be used to construct multiple energy barrier structure on solid/liquid interface and to evaluate the electron transport ability of some organic monolayers with the aid of electrochemical method.

A novel 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) monolayer film is formed on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amino cation radical method. Silicotungstic heteropolyanion (SiW12O404-, denoted as SiW12)-containing multilayer films have been fabricated on the 4-ABA modified GCE surface by alternate deposition with a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/+) (denoted as QPVP-Os). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray reflectivity (XR) have been used to characterise the as-prepared multilayer films. It is proved that the multilayer films are uniform and stable. The average thickness for a bilayer of QPVP-Os/SiW12 in the multilayer film is 30.2 Angstrom. The electrocatalytic activities of the multilayer films have been investigated on the reduction of three substrates of important analytical interests, HNO2, BrO3- and H2O2. Especially, the influence of layer number of the multilayer films on the electrocatalytic reduction of HNO2 has been investigated in detail. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two modification methods for multilayer formation, i.e. immersion growth and electrochemical growth, were studied comparatively for their influence on the electrochemical behavior and the electrocatalytic properties of the thus-fabricated SiMo11V-containing multilayer films. Electrochemical growth was proven to be a more suitable method than immersion growth in preparing uniform ultrathin multilayer self-assemblies with good functions. We investigated the effects of scan rate and pH on the electrochemical behavior of the monolayer and multilayer films. We also compared the electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3- and HNO2 by the multilayer films prepared by the two methods. Moreover, the influence of multilayer thickness and the identity of the outermost layer on the electrocatalytic properties were studied. Much higher catalytic currents appeared on the thicker multilayer films than those on the thinner ones. On the other hand, the catalytic currents became smaller when the multilayer films with SiMo11V as the outermost layer were covered with an additional quarternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) layer partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bypyridine) chloride (QPVP-Os layer). These influences were believed to be due to the different quantities of electrocatalyst loaded in the multilayer films and the blocking effect of the QPVP-Os outermost layer. A new kind of inorganic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was prepared by spontaneous adsorption of polyoxometalate anion, AsMo11VO404-, onto a gold surface from acidic aqueous solution. The adsorption process, structure, and electrochemical properties of the AsMo11VO404- SAM were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), electrochemistry, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The QCM data suggested that the self-assembling process could be described in terms of the Langmuir adsorption model, providing the value of the free energy of adsorption at -20 KJ mol(-1). The maximum surface coverage of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold surface was determined from the QCM data to be 1.7 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), corresponding to a close-packed monolayer of AsMo11VO404- anion. The analysis of the voltammograms of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold electrode showed three pairs of reversible peaks with an equal surface coverage of 1.78 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) for each of the peaks, and the value was agreed well with the QCM data. In-situ STM image demonstrated that the AsMo11VO404- SAM was very uniform and no aggregates or multilayer could be observed. Furthermore, the high-resolution STM images revealed that the AsMo11VO404- SAM on Au(lll) surface was composed of square unit cells with a lattice space of 10-11 Angstrom at +0.7 V (vs Ag\AgCl). The value was quite close to the diameter of AsMo11VO404- anion obtained from X-ray crystallographic study. The surface coverage of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold electrode estimated from the STM image was around 1.8 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), which was consistent with the QCM and electrochemical results.
