Reaction of the half-sandwich rhenium(v) complexes [Re-Cl-4(C(5)Me(5))] or [Re(O)Cl-2(C(5)Me(5))] with H2S in chloroform in the presence of pyridine leads to the chiral dithiolato complex [ReO((S)(SCH2)C(5)Me(4))(C(5)Me(5))] 1.

Rare earth trifluoroacetates, Ln(CF3CO2)(3) (Ln = thirteen rare earth elements), combined with R(n)AlH(3-n) (R = methyl, octyl, n = 3; R = ethyl, i-Butyl, n = 2, 3) were used as catalysts for the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF). The activity increased by adding propylene oxide (PO), as a promoter, to the polymerization system, producing high molecular weight polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). The effects of Ln, PO/Ln, and Al/Ln, and others on the polymerization of THF were also studied. (C) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Two series of La1-xSrxNiO3-lambda and La1-1.333xThxNiO3-lambda catalysts have been prepared, and the relationships between the solid defect structure and catalytic activity for NH3 oxidation were measured. The results showed that in the range of x < 0.3, the samples possessed single perovskite-type structure, and as the content of Sr2+ decreased and that of Th4+ increased the catalytic activity increased which was paralleled with the Ni3+ concentration within the catalysts. The active oxygen species (O- or O2(2-)) were present not only on the surface but also in the bulk of the samples. The synergistic effect of transition metal ions with higher oxidation states and randomly distributed oxygen vacancies was the key factor determining catalytic activity of perovskite-type oxides. A redox mechanism for NH3 oxidation over ABO3 is proposed.

The effect of oxygen content on superconductivity of the 2212 and 2223 phase has been studied. By comparing the excess oxygen, the modulation vector, the XRD patterns, and the electric resistivity of 2212 and 2223 phase samples obtained with different post-annealing conditions, i.e., annealing at 600-degrees-C or quenching from 860-degrees-C, it was found that the superconductivity is markedly influenced by both the defect distribution in non-Bi layers and the interstitial oxygens incorporated in the Bi-O layers. A tentative explanation for this is given.

The structure of the PCL spherulite in poly(epsilon-caprolactone)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PCL/SAN) blends was investigated by optical microscopy and small angle light scattering. The spherulite structure with a Maltese cross has been observed in pure PCL. Similar PCL/SAN blends exhibited not only spherulites with a Maltese cross, but also distinct extinction rings. The H(v) light scattering pattern especially caused diffraction rings in PCL/SAN blends but not in pure PCL. The spherical symmetry of spherulite PCL becomes more incomplete and the twist of the lamella becomes more irregular with increasing SAN content. It is found that the spherulite structure of PCL/SAN blends is dependent on the crystallization temperature and the concentration of SAN in PCL/SAN blends.

The present work is devoted to the studies on relationship of structure and activity of Sn-Mo oxides by using XRD, ESR, IR, XPS, TEM and SEM. Eight samples with Mo/(Mo + Sn) rations: 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0 were prepared. On the basis of structure characterization, Sn-Mo oxides can be divided into three groups: Catalysts I with Mo/(Mo + So) less-than-or-equal-to 0.2, Catalysts II with 0.2 < Mo/(Mo + Sn) < 0.8, and catalysts III with Mo/(Mo + Sn) greater-than-or-equal-to 0.8. The solid solution of Mo5+ in tin oxide was formed and the cation vacancy was formed in catalysts I. The solid solution of Sn4+ in molybdenum oxide was formed in catalysts III. The lattice oxygen in catalysts III has higher mobility and reactivity than that in catalysts I. The catalysts III showed higher activity but lower selectivity than that of catalysts I.

A wall-jet cell incorporating a carbon fibre array ring/glassy-carbon disk electrode has been constructed, and characterized by the cyclic voltammetry and flow-injection techniques. The ring (composed of several microdisks) and glassy-carbon disk electrode, can be used separately for different purposes, e.g., detection in solution without a supporting electrolyte, collection/shielding detection with dual-electrode and voltammetric/amperometric detection with series dual-electrode. The electrode shows better collection and shielding effects than usual ring-disk electrode in quiescent solution and the series dual-electrode in a thin-layer flow-through cell. The detection limit at the ring electrode is comparable with that at a conventional-size electrode, and has been used in the mobile phase without a supporting electrolyte, proving to be a promising detector for normal-phase liquid chromatography.

Using a low angle laser light scattering photometer (LALLS) the second virial coefficients(A_2) of ring-shaped and linear polystyrene (RPS and LPS) samples were determined in both toluene and butanone solutions. The A_2 of RPS in the good solvent (toluene) is smaller than that of LPS with the same molecular weight, but in the poor solvent (butanone) these two are very close. For RPS in the molecular weight range of 4×10~4——2.2×10~5, we haveA_(2r)=1.28×10~(-2)M_w~(-0.283) (Toluene 25℃) and A_(2r)=5.06×10~(-2...

Two novel rearranged trachylobane diterpenoids, designated as wallichanol A (2) and wallichanol B (3), consisting of an unprecedented pentacyclic skeleton named wallichane with a cyclobutane ring, and a new ent-trachylobane diterpenoid, 3-oxo-ent-trachyloban-17-oic acid (1), were isolated from the roots of Euphorbia wallichii. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive analysis of 2D-NMR spectroscopic data, with the stereochemistry of 1 confirmed by X-ray crystallographic study. All of these compounds potently block osteoclastogenesis in vitro, suggesting a potential therapeutic application in prevention of osteoporosis.

The catalytic behavior of Mo-based zeolite catalysts with different pore structure and size, particularly with 8 membered ring ( M R), 10 M R, coexisted 10 and 12 M R, and 12 M R, was studied in methane aromatization under the conditions of SV=1500 ml/(g.h), p=0.1 MPa and T = 973 K. It was found that the catalytic performance is correlated with the pore structure of the zeolite supports. The zeolites that possess 10 MR or 10 and 12 MR pore structure with a pore diameter equal to or slightly larger than the dynamic diameter of benzene molecule, such as ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZRP-1 and MCM-22, are fine supports. Among the tested zeolite supports, MCM-22 exhibits the highest activity and selectivity for benzene. A methane conversion of 10.5% with benzene selectivity of 80% was achieved over Mo/MCM-22 catalyst. The Mo/ERS-7 catalyst with 8 MR (0.45 nm) does not show any activity in methane dehydro-aromatization, while Mo/JQX-1 and Mo/SBA-15 catalysts with 12 MR pore exhibit little activity in the reaction. It can be concluded that the zeolites with 10 MR pore or coexisted 10 and 12 MR, having pore size equal to or slightly larger than the dynamic diameter of benzene molecule, are fine supports for methane activation and aromatization.

We report the experimental results of an unstable ring resonator with 90-deg beam rotation for a kilowatt class chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL). The distributions of near-field phase and far-field intensity were measured. A beam quality of 1.6 was achieved when the COIL average output power was approximately 5 kW.
