We have investigated growth of silver clusters on three different, i.e. normally cleaved, thermally oxidized and Ar+ ion sputtered highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations reveal that uniformly sized and spaced Ag clusters only form on the sputtered surface. Ar+ sputtering introduces relatively uniform surface defects compared to other methods. These defects are found to serve as preferential sites for Ag cluster nucleation, which leads to the formation of uniform clusters. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A single-pass process with the combination of oxidative coupling (OCM) and dehydro-aromatization (MDA) for the direct conversion of methane is carried out. With the assistance of the OCM reaction over the SrO-La2O3/CaO catalyst loaded on top of the catalyst bed, the duration of the dehydro-aromatization reaction catalyzed by a 6Mo/HMCM-49 catalyst shows a significant improvement, and. the initial deactivation rate constant of the overall process revealed about 1.5 x 10(-6) s(-1). Up to 72 h on stream, the yield of aromatics was still maintained at 5.0% with a methane conversion of 9.6%, which is obviously higher than that reported for the conventional MDA process with single catalyst. Upon the TPR results, this wonderful enhancement would be attributed to an in-situ formation of CO2 and H2O through the OCM reaction, which serves as a scavenger for actively removing the coke formed during the MDA reaction via a reverse Boudouard reaction and the water gas reaction as well.

CO hydrogenation to light alkenes was carried out on manganese promoted iron catalysts prepared by coprecipitation and sol-gel techniques. Addition of manganese in the range of 1-4 mol.% by means of coprecipitation could improve notably the percentage of C-2 (=) similar to C-4 (=) in the products, but it was not so efficient when the sol-gel method was employed. XRD and H-2-TPR measurements showed that the catalyst samples giving high C-2 (=) similar to C-4 (=) yields possessed ultra. ne particles in the form of pure alpha-(Fe1-xMnx)(2)O-3, and high quality in lowering the reduction temperature of the iron oxide. Furthermore, these samples displayed deep extent of carburization and different surface procedures to the others in the tests of Temperature Programmed Surface Carburization (TPSC). The different surface procedures of these samples were considered to have close relationship with the evolving of surface oxygen. It was also suggested that for the catalysts with high C-2 (=) similar to C-4 (=) yields, the turnover rate of the active site could be kept at a relatively high level due to the improved reducing and carburizing capabilities. Consequently, there would be a large number of sites for CO adsorption/dissociation and an enhanced carburization environment on the catalyst surface, so that the process of hydrogenation could be suppressed relatively to a low level. As a result, the percentage of the light alkenes in the products could be raised.

A novel poly sulfone/polyethylene oxide/silicone rubber (PSOPEO/SR) multilayer composite membrane was fabricated by double coating polysulfone substrate membrane with polyethylene oxide and silicone rubber. Gas permeation experiments were performed at 30 degrees C for hydrogen and nitrogen. PSf(PEO/SR membrane displayed high and steady performance for H-2/N-2: permeances of H-2 and N-2 of 49.51 and 0.601 GPU, respectively, and H-2/N-2 ideal separation factor of 82.3. It was explained that layer interfaces due to the introduction of PEO layer act as the permselective media and are responsible for the higher H-2/N-2 ideal separation factor which has exceeded the intrinsic permselectivities of the three polymers used in this study. La0.8Sr0.2Mn1.1O3 (LSM1.1)-10 mol% Sc2O3-Stabilized ZrO2 co-doped with CeO2 (ScSZ) composite cathodes were investigated for anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with thin 8 mol% Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) electrolyte. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the ScSZ electrolytes displayed good chemical compatibility with the nonstoichiometric LSM1.1 against co-firing at 1300 degrees C. Increasing the CeO2 content in the ScSZ electrolytes dramatically suppressed the electrode polarization resistance, which may be related to the improved surface oxygen exchange or the enlarged active area of cathode. The 5Ce10ScZr was the best electrolyte for the composite cathodes, which caused a small ohmic resistance decrease and the reduced polarization resistance and brought about the highest cell performance. The cell performances at lower temperatures seemed to rely on the electrode polarization resistance more seriously, than the ohmic resistance. Compared with the cell impedance at higher temperatures, the higher the 5Ce10ScZr proportion in the composite cathodes, the smaller the increment of the charge transfer resistance at lower temperatures. The anode-supported SOFC with the LSM1.1-5Ce10ScZr (60:40) composite cathode achieved the maximum power densities of 0.82 W/cm(2) at 650 degrees C and 2.24 W/cm(2) at 800 degrees C, respectively. Fenoxycarb was synthesized and its heat capacities were precisely measured with an automated adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 79 to 360 K. The sample was observed to melt at (326.31 +/- 0.14) K. The molar enthalpy and entropy of fusion as well as the chemical purity of the compound were determined to be (26.98 +/- 0.04) kJ-mol(-1), (82.69 +/- 0.09) J-K-1-mol(-1) and 99.53% +/- 0.01%, respectively. The thermodynamic functions relative to the reference temperature (298.15 K) were calculated based on the heat capacity measurements in the temperature range between 80 and 360 K. The extrapolated melting temperature for the absolutely pure compound obtained from fractional melting experiments was (326.62 +/- 0.06) K. Further research on the melting process of this compound was carried out by means of differential scanning calorimetry technique. The result was in agreement with that obtained from the measurements of heat capacities.
