Food Sources of three filter-feeding bivalves from two habitats (intertidal oyster Crassostrea gigas, mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. and subtidal cultured scallop Chlamys farreri) of Jiaozhou Bay (Qingdao,China) were determined by fatty acid and stable isotope in analysis. Cultured scallop was characterized by significant diatom markets such as 16:1/16:0 close to 1 and high ratio of 20:5(n - 3)/22:6(n - 3), hence we assume that the scallop mainly feeds on diatoms. Fatty acid biomarkers specific to bacteria and terrestrial materials were also found in considerable amounts in scallop tissue, which suggested that there were Substantial bacterial and terrestrial input into the food of the species. Intertidal oyster and mussel, however, exhibited significant flagellate marker. 22:6(n - 3). and lower level of diatom markers. which indicated that flagellates are also part of intertidal bivalves' Planktonic food Sources: meanwhile, high level of Chlorophyta fatty acid marker, Sigma 18:2(n - 6) + 18:3(n - 3), suggested that Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta) seaweed bed supplied important food sources to intertidal bivalves. Additionally, result of stable isotope analysis showed that phytoplankton contributed 86.2 to 89.0% to intertidal bivalves' carbon budget; macroalga U. pertusa origin source had a contribution of MIX, to 11.0%, which indicated its role Lis in important supplemental food source to intertidal bivalves. From this study. it is concluded that the dietary difference of three bivalves probably relates to the different potential food sources in the scallop farm and intertidal zone in Jiaozhou Bay.

The dye C.I. Acid Blue 80 (AB80) was easily degraded by TiO2-P25 assisted photocatalysis in aqueous dispersion under irradiation of sunlight. The optimal reaction conditions were [TiO2] = 2.0 g/L, pH = 10, [H2O2] = 5 mmol/L. The photocatalytic reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetics. The adsorption of AB80 onto TiO2 was in accord with Langmuir equation.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of long-term cryopreservation on physiological characteristics, the antioxidant activities and lipid peroxidation of red seabream sperm which were respectively cryopreserved with 15% dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO) for 1 month, 13 months, 26 months, 48 months and 73 months. The motility and fertility of post-thaw sperm decreased with the storage time going on. The highest motility (87.67 +/- 2.52%) was obtained in sperm cryopreserved for 1 month and the lowest (50.67 +/- 5.31%) was in sperm for 73 months. There were no significant differences (p < 0.05) in fertilization rates of sperm cryopreserved for 1 month (71.33 +/- 8.84%), 13 months (69.22 +/- 1.02%) and 26 months (60.33 +/- 2.33%); however, the sperm fertility decreased significantly for 48 months (47.22 +/- 3.89%) and 73 months (39.56 +/- 0.69%) storage. In addition, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities of sperm were at a stable level for less than 26 months storage, then, decreased significantly after 48 months storage. Catalase (CAT) activities of sperm cryopreserved for 13 months, 26 months, 48 months and 73 months were significantly lower than that for 1 month. There were no significant differences in the malondialdehyde (MDA) level of sperm for less than 13 months storage. After 26 months storage, the concentration of MDA increased significantly, and the highest concentration (3.22 +/- 0.05 nmol/mgprot) was obtained in 73 months storage sperm. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. In the present paper, ascorbate and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were used to degrade porphyran. It was found that porphyran could be degraded by free radical that was generated by ascorbate and H2O2 in combination. It was possible to prepare desired porphyran products with different molecular weight by adjusting ascorbate to H,02 proportions and their concentrations. The molar ratio of I was demonstrated more effective than in other ratios. Higher concentrations accelerated the degradation. Moreover, results of chemical analysis and FT-IR spectra suggested that the main structure of degraded products still remained although some changes happened. The degraded and natural porphyrans possessed scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-radical activity and reducing power. Higher antioxidant activities were found in both systems when the molecular weight was reduced. The results indicated that the antioxidant activities were closely related to the molecular weight. The degraded porphyrans are potential antioxidant in vitro. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A practical and efficient disposal method for hydrodechlormation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in transformer oil is reported. Transformer oil containing PCBs was treated by nanometric sodium hydride (nano-NaH) and transition metal catalysts. High destruction and removal efficiency (89.8%) can be attained by nano-NaH alone under mild conditions. The process exhibits apparent characteristics of a first order reaction. The reductive ability of nano-NaH was enhanced by the addition of transition metal catalysts. In the presence of TiCl4, 99.9% PCBs was hydrodechlorinated. The complex reducing reagents, Ni(OAc)(2) + i-PrONa, show extra hydrodechlorinating activity for di-chlorinated biphenyls. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) modulate immune responses particularly by affecting T cell function and are applied clinically as adjuvant immunosuppressants in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms of PUFA-induced immunosuppressive effects are not yet elucidated. Membrane lipid rafts are functional plasma membrane microdomains characterized by a unique lipid environment. Since lipid interactions are crucial for the formation of lipid rafts, the immunomodulatory effects of PUFAs may be due to changes of fatty acid composition in lipid rafts.
