The blends of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-beta-hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB-co-HV)/poly(p-vinylphenol)(PVPh) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy and high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR techniques. Single glass transition temperatures existing in the whole composition range indicates that these blends are miscible. The presence of hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl of PVPh and carbonyl of P(HB-co-HV), shown by FT-IR spectra, is the origin of the miscibility. Furthermore, results obtained by high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR give more information about the structure of the blends. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Extraction resins, of the type of;levextrel, (which is a collective term for styrene/divinylbenzene based copolymers of predominantly macroporous structure that contain a selective extractant) are important for the recovery and separation of metal ions, as they combine features of solvent extraction and ion exchange resins. This paper presents the results of the adsorption of heavy rare earth ions (Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III), Yb(III), Lu(III) and Y(III)) from hydrochloric acid solutions at 0.2 mol/L ionic strength and 50 degrees C by the extraction resin containing di (2,4,4-trimethyl pentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) and the chromatographic separation of (Er(III), Tm(III) and Yb(III)). Technological separation products, with purity and yield of Tm2O3 >99.97%, >80%, Er2O3 >99.9%, >94% and Yb2O3 >99.8%, >80% respectively, have been obtained from a feed having the composition Tm2O3 60%, Er2O3 10%, and Yb2O3 3%, the others 27%. The distribution coefficients, extraction equilibrium constants and separation factors have been determined as a function of acidity, loading of the resin and rare earths, flow rates and column ratios. The resolutions and efficiencies of separation of Er/Tm/Yb each other have been calculated. The stoichiometry of the extraction of rare earth ions has been suggested as well.

Ferric trisacetylacetonate has been deposited within the zeolite MCM-41 and the product characterized by XRD and IR. In water at pH 7 it catalyzes the oxidation of phenol by H2O2, giving 58% conversion in 1 h at 50 degrees C: products are catechol (66%), hydroquinone (27%) and benzoquinone (7%). Other oxidants and solvents are much less effective. UV-VIS spectra suggest a radical substitution mechanism, and a pollution-free process for phenol hydroxylation is now possible.

The responses of a cryohydrogel tyrosinase enzyme electrode to four substrates in three pure water immiscible organic solvents were investigated. Kinetic parameters, the maximum kinetic current, I-max, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant, K-m(app), and I-max/K-m(app), were calculated. The I-max/K-m(app) value was taken as an indicator of the catalytic efficiency of the sensor. The effect of the substrate hydrophobicity on I-max/K-m(app) and response time of the sensor were discussed. The effects of both hydrophobicity (log P) and dielectric constant (epsilon) of the organic solvent on the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme in the organic phase were studied. Two groups of mixed oxides La2-xThxCuO4+/-lambda (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4) and La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) were prepared. Their crystal structures were studied with XRD and IR spectra, etc. Meanwhile, the average valence of Cu ions and nonstoichiometric oxygen (lambda) was measured through chemical analyses. Catalysis of the abovementioned mixed oxides was investigated in phenol hydroxylation, good results were obtained for some mixed oxides, and found that the catalysis of these mixed oxides have close relation with their defect structure and composition. A radical substitution mechanism was also proposed for this catalytic reaction.

The curing reaction process of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) with 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride (Nadic) as curing agents was investigated using isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (IDSC) and nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DDSC) techniques. It was found that the curing reactions of E-PEK/DDS and E-PEK/Nadic are nth-order reactions but not autoaccelerating. The experimental results revealed that the curing reaction kinetics parameters measured from IDSC and DDSC are not equivalent. This means that, in the curing reaction kinetics model for our E-PEK system, both isothermal and nonisothermal reaction kinetics parameters are needed to describe isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes, The isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes were successfully simulated using this model. A new extrapolation method was suggested. On the basis of this method the maximum extent of the curing reaction (A(ult)) that is able to reach a certain temperature can be predicted. The A(ult) for the E-PEK system estimated by the new method agrees well with the results obtained from another procedure reported in the literature. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The novel polyetherethersulfone (PES-C) prepared from phenol-phthalein in our institute is an amorphous, rigid, tough material with good mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. To improve its water vapor permeability for the application of gas drying, the PES-C was sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid and transferred in sodium, cupric, and ferric salt forms. The sulfonation degree can be regulated by controlling the temperature and reaction time. Characterization of sulfonated PES-C in sodium form was made by IR. Some properties of the sulfonated PES-C, such as solubility, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and transport properties to nitrogen and water vapor have also been discussed. The fragmentations of three bifunctional phenylether compounds including 2-(2, 6-dichloro)phenoxyl propionitrile, N-hydroxyl-4-butoxyl phenylacetyl amine(bufexamc) and 2-(1-methylethoxyl) phenol methylcarbamate (Propoxur) under electron impact ionization were reported, Metastable ion(MI) and collision-induced dissociation(CID) at a low energy have been used to study the fragmentation pathways from molecular ions. Apart from the simple bond cleavages, and the unimolecular dissociations via ion/neutral complex intermediate as a competitive mechanism were demonstrated, Moreover, the intramolecular hydrogen transfer and double hydrogen transfers in the fragmentations of these compounds were discussed in detail.

Superconductor mixed oxides were often used as catalysts at higher temperature in gas phase oxidations, and considered not suitable for lower temperature reactions in the liquid-solid phase; here the catalysis of YBa2Cu3O7+/-x and Y2BaCuO5+/-x in the phenol hydroxylation at lower temperature with H2O2 as oxygen donor was studied, and found that the superconductor YBa2Cu3O7+/-x, has no catalytic activity for phenol hydroxylation, but Y2BaCuO5+/-x does, even has better catalytic activity and stability than most previously reported ones. With the studies of catalysis of other simple metal oxides and perovskite-like mixed oxides, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and the experimental facts are explained clearly, and draw a conclusion that the perovskite-like mixed oxides with (AO)(ABO(3)) and (AO)2(ABO(3)) structure have better catalytic activity than the simple perovskite oxides with (ABO(3))(3) structure alone, and (AO) structure unit is the key for the mixed oxides to have the phenol hydroxylation activity. No pollution of this process is very important for its further industrial application.

The determination of benzoic acid, thiourea and 2-mercaptoethanol in three pure organic solvents, viz., chloroform, chlorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene, by using an amperometric cryohydrogel tyrosinase biosensor is described. Measurements were carried out with phenol as the enzyme substrate. Kinetic parameters (K-i and I-50) were determined in the three solvents for various inhibitors. The sensor showed the most sensitive measurements to these inhibitors in pure chloroform. The solvent-induced deviation of the biosensor to thiourea was evaluated by means of Hill coefficients. The smallest deviation as observed in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, owing to the high hydrophobicity of this solvent. The nature of the inhibition process and its reversibility mere also examined.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an image analyser are used to study morphologies of the fractured surface, etched by hot phenol, of polypropylene/maleated polypropylene/polyamide 12 PP/PP-MA/PA12) = 65/10/25 blend and PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend. The particle dimension and its distribution of PA12 dispersed phase in these blends are much lower and narrower than that of the PP/PA12. blends. Especially, most of the particles in the PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend are smaller than 0.1 mu m. The effect of the morphology of PP/PA12 blends on their crystallization behaviour is studied using differential scanning calorimetry and SEM. PA12 dispersed phase coarsens during annealing in the PP/PP-MA/PA12 = 65/10/25 blend. The mechanism of coarsening of the PA12 dispersed phase is a coalescence process. The intense mixing between the PP component and the PA12 component through reaction of PP-MA and PA12 leads to a change of dynamic mechanical behaviour of the components. A separation method is used to separate the polyolefin parts (precipitated from hot phenol), from PA12 parts (hot phenol filtrate). Of PP/PP-MA/PA12 = 65/10/25 blend, infra-red measurements and elementary analysis show that the precipitate has a lower PA12 content than the feed, whereas the filtrate has a higher PA12 content. From PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend, PA12 contents in the precipitate and the filtrate are the same as in the feed. This implies that all PA12 has reacted with all PP-MA in the latter case while not in the former case. Using the method of interface exposure, interfacial reaction of PP-MA with PA12 is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (X.p.s.). Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A new immobilization method for construction of a tyrosinase based biosensor is described. A simple physical freezing technique was adopted for preparation. The immobilized enzyme yields specific activities that are more than 22% of the soluble enzyme. The enzyme electrode can be stored in dry state for more than three months without any loss of activity. The biosensor was applied to the determination of several phenols and o-diphenols. The lowest detect limit is 0.02 mu mol/1 and the linear range was 1.0 X 10(-7)-1.0 X 10(-4) mol/1 for catechol. The kinetic parameters have also been calculated.

A strong strain-rate and temperature dependence was observed for the fracture toughness of phenolphthalein polyether ketone (PEK-C). Two separate crack-blunting mechanisms have been proposed to account for the fracture-toughness data. The first mechanism involves thermal blunting due to adiabatic heating at the crack tip for the high temperatures studied. In the high-temperature range, thermal blunting increases the fracture toughness corresponding to an effectively higher test temperature. However, in the low-temperature range, the adiabatic temperature rise is insufficient to cause softening and Jic increases with increasing temperature owing to viscoelastic losses associated with the p-relaxation there. The second mechanism involves plastic blunting due to shear yield/flow processes at the crack tip and this takes place at slow strain testing of the single-edge notched bending (SENB) samples. The temperature and strain-rate dependence of the plastic zone size may also be responsible for the temperature and strain-rate dependence of fracture toughness.

The present paper reports the synthesis of glycidyl monoether of 4-[(p-nitrophenyl) azo] phenol (GMNA) and crosslinking reaction of GMNA with hexamethylene diisocyanate biuret (HDIB). The Tg of crosslinked polymer was investigated by DSC. The orientation and stability of the poled and crosslinked polymer film were studied by UV-Vis spectra and Maker fringe method.
