The development of quantum cascade laser at 2.94 THz is reported. The laser structure is based on a bound-to-continuum active region and a semi-insulating surface-plasmon waveguide. Lasing is observed up to a heat-sink temperature of 70 K in pulsed mode with light power of 4.75 mW at 10 K and 1 mW at 70 K. A threshold current density of 296.5 A/cm(2) and an internal quantum efficiency of 1.57 x 10(-2) per cascade period are also observed at 10 K. The characteristic temperature of this laser is extracted to be T-0 = 57.5 K.

Microphotoluminescence (mu-PL) investigation has been performed at room temperature on InAs quantum dot (QD) vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) structure in order to characterize the QD epitaxial structure which was designed for 1.3 mu m wave band emission. Actual and precise QD emission spectra including distinct ground state (GS) and excited state (ES) transition peaks are obtained by an edge-excitation and edge-emission (EEEE) mu-PL configuration. Conventional photoluminescence methods for QD-VCSELs structure analysis are compared and discussed, which indicate the EEEE mu-PL is a useful tool to determine the optical features of the QD active region in an as-grown VCSEL structure. Some experimental results have been compared with simulation results obtained with the aid of the plane-wave admittance method. After adjustment of epitaxial growth according to EEEE mu-PL measurement results, QD-VCSEL structure wafer with QD GS transition wavelength of 1300 nm and lasing wavelength of 1301 nm was obtained.

A broadly tunable and high-power grating-coupled external cavity laser with a tuning range of more than 200 nm and a similar to 200-mW maximum output power was realized, by utilizing a gain device with the chirped multiple quantum-dot (QD) active layers and bent waveguide structure. The chirped QD active medium, which consists of QD layers with InGaAs strain-reducing layers different in thickness, is beneficial to the broadening of the material gain spectrum. The bent waveguide structure and facet antireflection coating are both effective for the suppression of inner-cavity lasing under large injection current.

We demonstrate a low threshold polymer solid state thin-film distributed feedback (DFB) laser on an InP substrate with the DFB structure. The used gain medium is conjugated polymer poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1, 4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) doped polystyrene (PS) and formed by drop-coating method. The second order Bragg scattering region on the InP substrate gave rise to strong feedback, thus a lasing emission at 638.9nm with a line width of 1.2nm is realized when pumped by a 532nm frequency-doubled Nd: YAG pulsed laser. The devices show a laser threshold as low as 7 nJ/pulse.

The amplified spontaneous emission properties of a 2, 1, 3-benzothiadiazole attached polyfluorene semiconductor polymer were studied. The conjugated polymer shows a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 67% and emits a narrowed blue emissive spectrum with a full width at half-maximum of 3.6 nm when optically pumped, indicating better lasing action. A threshold energy as low as 0.22 mJ pulse(-1) cm(-2), a net gain of 40.54 cm(-1) and a loss of 7.8 cm(-1) were obtained, demonstrating that this conjugated polymer could be a promising candidate as the gain medium for the fabrication of blue polymer lasers.

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) characteristics of a blue dye coumarin 151 encapsulated in a highly ordered mesoporous SBA-15 were studied. The spectra narrowing was observed and found that the threshold and loss were greatly reduced, and the gain is significantly increased compared with spin-coated coumarin 151 doped poly(4-vinylphenol) film. The ASE threshold, gain, and loss, respectively, reached 0.55 mJ pulse(-1) cm(-2), 44.78 cm(-1), and 8.9 cm(-1) for the coumarin 151 encapsulated in mesoporous SBA-15 film. The optimized lasing action owes much to the effects of the better spatial confinement of the molecules in the ordered mesoporous structure of the host SBA-15.

The lasing properties of a soluble conjugated polymer, Poly[1,8-octanedioxy-2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-1,2-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-3,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene] (CNMBC-Ph) in chloroform solution were investigated. The third harmonic radiation of a Nd:YAG laser was used as the pump light. The stimulated emission with a linewidth of 15 nm was observed in the blue wavelength region with the peak at 450 nm. The threshold pulse peak power was about 2.8 MW/cm(2). The energy conversion yield of the laser was estimated to be about 3.4%. The maximum peak power of the laser output pulse reached 40 kW. A surface emitting microcavity was formed by sandwiching a polymer film containing poly(N-vinyleabzole) (PVK). 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminium (Alq(3)) and 4-(Dicyanome thylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-Pyran(DCM) between a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with a reflectivity of 99% and a silver film. The sample was optically pumped with 250 ps pulses at 2 Hz repetition rate by a 355 nm line of the third harmonic of a mode-lock Nd:YAG laser. The lasing phenomenon was observed in DCM-doped PVK microcavity. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) was 3 nm with the peak wavelength at 602 nm. A dye laser based on the soluble conjugated polymer, Poly[1,8-octanedioxy-2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-1, 4-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-3,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene], has been fabricated. The laser was pumped by light pulses from the third harmonic radiation of an Nd:YAG laser. The lasing was observed in the blue wavelength region with the peak at 450 nm. The threshold energy is about 19 mu J. The energy conversion yield of the laser is about 3.4%. The maximum peak power of the laser output pulse arrives at about 20 kW.

The Mesozoic pyroclastic rocks cover a vast coastal area in southeastern China, which is an important part of volcanic belt around Pacific Ocean. However, the previous dates for these rocks are confused and conflicted with each other, which have limited the further researches. It is difficult to date pyroclastic rocks, for almost all the dating methods, due to the multiple sources during their formation. Single crystal laser probe 40Ar/39Ar method is a powerful means to date pyroclastic rocks with complex sources. By distinguishing the xenocrysts and altered materials, Singe crystal total fusions of CO2 lasing on the sanidine separates could yield rational 40Ar/39Ar results and distinguish their sources. Timing on formations of the Moshishan Group, after avoiding the exotic and altered grains by lasing on the single sanidine separate, was reported in this study. 40Ar/39Ar incremental heating results of Cement part of the pyroclastic rocks show that the age spectrums are too complex to interpret for geological significance because of the alteration and 39Ar recoil. Incremental heating on K-feldspar separate from pyroclastic rocks give reliable data. Combining 40Ar/39Ar incremental heating ages and laser total fusion ages, we suggest the age was 125Ma-120Ma for Dashuang Fm, 120-119 Ma for Gaowu Fm, 119-114Ma for Xishantou Fm, 114-112Ma for Chawan Fm and 112-110Ma for Jiuliping Fm. The most intense period of volcanic activity in eastern Zhejiang Province was at about 120Ma. These new ages are much younger than the previous ones, suggesting that these thick volcanic formations had been formed in very short durations.
