In order to develop photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) imaged in alkaline aqueous solution, a photosensitive diamine and relevant polymer containing conjugated double bonds in the main chain have been synthesized. The photosensitive characteristics and thermal stability of the polymers were investigated. These polymers possess good thermal stability and sensitivity to UV irradiation, and could be used to form a PSPI resist using alkaline aqueous solution as developer. Cyclic voltammetry and in-situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry were used for the electrochemical and vibrational characterizations of the reduction process of K3Fe (CN)(6) in polyethylene glycol(PEG) with LiClO4 as supporting electrolyte at a Pt microelectrode. The rate of electron transfer is a function of the concentration of the supporting electrolyte. The redox potentials and cyclic voltammetric currents vary with Li/O molar ratio. The bl-situ spectroelectrochemistry shows that the infrared spectra are influenced by the concentration of LiClO4. The bridging cyanide groups with a structure Fe-I-C drop N ... Fe-I-C drop N are formed during the reduction process of K3Fe (CN)(6). There may be an activated complex between the Lif cation and the complex anion.

Polyaniline (PAn) with different molecular weight was prepared by adding organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or THF into the polymerization mixture. Open-circuit potential measurements showed that the polymerization rate was lowered by the addition of the organic solvent Spectral studies showed that PAn intermediate before the oxidant was consumed was pernigraniline and it was reduced to emeraldine base rapidly by aniline in the termination period. A mechanism of chain propagation was proposed. Chain propagation and autoacceleration period were almost independent of addition of pernigraniline, and the autoacceleration of aniline polymerization is due to more rapid initiation rate. In situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry behavior of L-ascorbic acid (H(2)A) in polymer electrolyte is reported for the first time. H(2)A undergoes a two-step oxidation, The oxidation waves shift towards more anodic potential values when the scan rate increases. The peak currents of the oxidation waves are proportional to the square roots of scan rate up to 100 mV/s, The in situ infrared spectra suggest that the product of the oxidation be dehydroascorbic acid, which may exist as a dimer.

A comb-like polymer host(CBPE) as polymer electrolyte was synthesized by reacting poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer(EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The synthetic process was followed by IR and the amorphous product characterized by IR and elemental analysis. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log sigma vs. 1/(T - T-0) may exhibit dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T-0. The comb-like polymer is a white rubbery solid which dissolves in acetone. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The diffusion coefficients (D) of quinhydrone were estimated in polymer electrolytes by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry and steady-state current voltammetry. The D values have been estimated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing different concentrations, and cations of supporting electrolytes, and in different solvents over a range of temperatures. The dependencies of electroactive probe diffusion coefficients on temperature, supporting electrolyte concentration and polymer chain length are discussed. The results show that D increases with increasing temperature and decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte. The diffusion coefficient depends strongly on the length of polymer chain and decreases sharply with increasing polymer chain length. The contribution of electron self-exchange has been explored and it seems to be negligible here. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) of seven ferrocene derivatives were estimated using cyclic voltammograms under mixed spherical/semi-infinite linear diffusion and steady-state voltammetry at a microdisk electrode in polymer electrolyte. The k(s) and diffusion coefficient (D) are both 100 to 1000-fold smaller in polymer solvent than in monomeric solvents, and the D and k(s) decrease with increasing polymer chain length. The results conform to the difference of viscosity (eta) or relaxation time (tau(L)) for these different solvents. The k(s) and D increase with increasing temperature, and the activation barriers of the electrode reaction are obtained. The influences of the substituting group in the ferrocene ring on k(s) and D are discussed. The k(s) are proportional to the D of the ferrocene derivatives, which indicates that solvent dynamics control the electrode reaction. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The catalytic oxidation of cyclohexene to cyclohexanone using Pd(OAc)(2)/HQ/FePc was investigated in an acidic aqueous solution of acetonitrile. The role of each component of this system in the oxidation of cyclohexene was explored by means of UV-VIS, IR, XPS spectroscopy and. cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Based on the experimental results, the mechanism of the oxidation of cyclohexene catalyzed by Pd(OAc)(2)/HQ/FePc was elucidated.

Electrochemical behavior of the transfer of H+ across polypyrrole membrane (PPM) was studied. The transfer process was quasi-reversible and mainly diffusion-controlled. PPM electropolymerized in water solution has better reversibility than that in CH3CN solution for the transfer of H+. The transfer process of H+ across the two kinds of PPM indicated that the PPM electrochemically polymerized was of asymmetry.

An effort has been made to modify the mechanical behaviour of our previously reported gel-type gamma-radiation crosslinked polyethylene oxide (PEO)-LiClO4 polymer electrolyte. A highly polar and gamma-radiation crosslinkable crystalline polymer, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), was selected to blend with PEO and then subjected to gamma-irradiation in order to make an simultaneous interpenetrating network (SIN), which was used as a polymer host to impart stiffness to the plasticized system. Experimental results have shown that the presence of PVDF in the system, through gamma-radiation induced SIN formation, could not only give a rather high mechanical modulus of 10(7) Pa at ambient temperature, but also maintain the room temperature ionic conductivity at a high level (greater than 10(-4) S/cm). DSC, DMA and conductivity measurement techniques were used to examine the effects of blending, gamma-irradiation and plasticization on the variations of glass transition and melting endotherm, on the appearance of high elastic plateau and on the temperature dependence of ionic conductivity: In addition, it was found that, in contrast with the unplasticized system, the ionic conductivity mechanism of this gel-type electrolyte seems to conform to the Arrhenius model, suggesting that, as a result of the high degree of plasticization, the polymer chains act mainly as the skeleton of the networks or polymer cages to immobilize the liquid electrolyte solution, whereas the ionic species migrate as if they were in a liquid medium. Heteropoly acids (HPAs), such as dodecatungstosilicic acid (SiW12), adsorb strongly on to activated carbons. The surface chemical properties of the activated carbons have a pronounced effect on the adsorption of HPAs. To obtain activated carbons with the desired surface chemical properties, modification with mineral acids has been applied. The adsorption isotherms of SiW12 from aqueous solution and various acidic media on to the various carbons have been studied. On the basis of the results obtained, an adsorption model for HPAs from acidic media is presented.

The thermal behaviour and ion-transport properties of a comb polymer electrolyte CP350/LiSCN based on methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains were studied by means of DSC and ac impedance method. The two glass transition temperatures which can be attributed to side chains and main chains respectively were found to increase with increasing salt concentration. Conductivities which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour were analyzed by using Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and interpreted on the basis of the configurational entropy model derived by Gibbs and coworkers. The optimum ionic conductivity at 25 degrees C achieved was 2.19x10(-5)S/cm.

A new class of rubbery 'polymer-in-salt' electrolytes for application in solid-state lithium batteries has been explored by differential scanning calorimetry and a.c. impedance analysis. Simple phase diagrams of LiN(CF3SO2)(2)+LiClO4 and LiC(CF3SO2)(3)+LiN(CF3SO2)(2) have been drawn, which are very important to determine polymer-in-salt electrolyte materials. The conductivities obtained by a.c. impedance measurement are smaller for the electrolyte that contains acetate LiOAc salt than for the electrolyte without this salt.
