Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially evolving flat-plate boundary layer transition process at free stream Mach number 0.7 is performed. Tollmien-Schlichting (T-S) waves are added on the inlet boundary as the disturbances before transition. Typical coherent structures in the transition process are investigated based on the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor. The instantaneous shear stress and the mean velocity profile in the transition region are studied. In our view, the fact that the peak value of shear stress in the stress concentration area increases and exceeds a threshold value during the later stage of the transition process plays an important role in the laminar breakdown process.

Photoluminescence (PL) of strained SiGe/Si multiple quantum wells (MQW) with flat and undulated SiGe well layers was studied at different temperature. With elevated temperature from 10K, the no-phonon (NP) peak of the SiGe layers in the flat sample has firstly a blue shift due to the dominant transition converting from bound excitons (BE) to free excitons (FE), and then has a red shift when the temperature is higher than 30K because of the narrowing of the band gap. In the undulated sample, however, monotonous blue shift was observed as the temperature was elevated from 10 K to 287 K. The thermally activated electrons, confined in Si due to type-II band alignment, leak into the SiGe crest regions, and the leakage is enhanced with the elevated temperature. It results in a blue shift of the SiGe luminescence spectra.

Initial stage GaN growth by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) on SiC(0001) substrate is followed by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy. Comparison is made between growth on nominally flat and vicinal substrate surfaces and the results reveal characteristic differences between the two. Ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) rocking curve measurements of the films show lower density of defects and better structural quality of the vicinal film. We suggest the improved structural quality of the vicinal film is related to the characteristic difference in its initial stage nucleation and coalescence proccsses than that of the flat film.

In this work, we present the growth of InAs rings by droplet epitaxy. A complete process from the rings formation to their density saturation has been demonstrated: A morphological evolution with the varying of the indium deposition amount has been, clearly observed. Our results indicate that there, is a critical deposition amount (similar to 1.1 ML) for the indium to form InAs dots before droplets form; there is also a critical deposition amount (similar to 1.4 ML) to form InAs ring, but it is caused by the formation of droplets as the deposition amount increases. The density of the rings saturates when the deposition amount exceeds similar to 3.3 ML; because the adsorbed indium atoms block sites for further adsorption and the following supplied In only contributes to the size increase of In droplets. Still, as the In deposition amount increases, we can find coupled quantum rings. Moreover, the wetting layer properties of these structures are studied by reflectance difference spectroscopy, which shows a complicated evolution with the In amount. Theoretical and experimental investigations were performed to show the application of x-ray crystal truncation rod scattering combined with x-ray reflectivity in the measurements of surface roughness and near-surface damage of mechanochemically polished wafers. By fitting the measured crystal truncation rod curves it has been shown that polished wafers are divided into three parts -irregular steps on the surface, a damaged thin layer beneath the surface and a perfect bulk. The results show that the root mean square of the surface roughness of mechanochemically polished Fe-doped and/or S-doped InP wafers is one to two atom layers, and that the lateral correlation length of the surface roughness is about 3000-7500 Angstrom. The thickness of the damaged region is found to be about 1000 atom layers.

Weak epitaxy growth (WEG) can afford high-mobility thin films of disk-like organic semiconductor of which mobility is up to the level of the corresponding single crystals. We investigated the WEG behavior and mechanism of planar phthalocyanine in the model system of metal-free phthalocyanine (H2Pc) grown on p-sexiphenyl (p-6P) ultrathin films (monolayers and double layers). Highly oriented H2Pc films with molecules standing up exhibited two kinds of different in-plane orientations, i.e., three sets of in-plane orientations and only one set of in-plane orientation, on p-6P monolayer and double-layer films, respectively.

A computational simulation is conducted to investigate the influence of Rayleigh-Taylor instability on liquid propellant reorientation flow dynamics for the tank of CZ-3A launch vehicle series fuel tanks in a low-gravity environment. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is used to simulate the free surface flow of gas-liquid. The process of the liquid propellant reorientation started from initially flat and curved interfaces are numerically studied. These two different initial conditions of the gas-liquid interface result in two modes of liquid flow. It is found that the Rayleigh-Taylor instability can be reduced evidently at the initial gas-liquid interface with a high curve during the process of liquid reorientation in a low-gravity environment.

Direct numerical simulation of spatially evolving compressible boundary layer over a blunt wedge is performed in this paper. The free-stream Mach number is 6 and the disturbance source produced by wall blowing and suction is located downstream of the sound-speed point. Statistics are studied and compared with the results in incompressible flat-plate boundary layer. The mean pressure gradient effects on the vortex structure are studied.

The bonding of glass wafer to aluminum foils in multi-layer assemblies was made by the common anodic bonding process. The bonding was performed at temperatures in the range 350-450 degrees C and with an applied voltage in the range 400-700 V under a pressure of 0.05 MPa. Residual stress and deformation in samples of two-layer (aluminum/glass) and three-layer (glass/aluminum/glass) were analyzed by nonlinear finite element simulation software MARC. The stress and strain varying with cooling time were obtained. The analyzed results show that deformation of the three-layer sample is significantly smaller than that of the two-layer sample, because of the symmetric structure of the three-layer sample. This has an important advantage in MEMS fabrication. The maximum equivalent stresses locate in the transition layer in both samples, which will become weakness in bonded sample.

Direct numerical simulation of the turbulent boundary layer over a sharp cone with 20 degrees cone angle (or 10 degrees half-cone angle) is performed by using the mixed seventh-order up-wind biased finite difference scheme and sixth-order central difference scheme. The free stream Mach number is 0.7 and free stream unit Reynolds number is 250000/inch. The characteristics of transition and turbulence of the sharp cone boundary layer are compared with those of the flat plate boundary layer. Statistics of fully developed turbulent flow agree well with the experimental and theoretical data for the turbulent flat-plate boundary layer flow. The near wall streak-like structure is shown and the average space between streaks (normalized by the local wall unit) keeps approximately invariable at different streamwise locations. The turbulent energy equation in the cylindrical coordinate is given and turbulent energy budget is studied. The computed results show that the effect of circumferential curvature on turbulence characteristics is not obvious.

An approach which combines direct numerical simulation (DNS) with the Lighthill acoustic analogy theory is used to study the potential noise sources during the transition process of a Mach 2.25 flat plate boundary layer. The quadrupole sound sources due to the flow fluctuations and the dipole sound sources due to the fluctuating surface stress are obtained. Numerical results suggest that formation of the high shear layers leads to a dramatic amplification of amplitude of the fluctuating quadrupole sound sources. Compared with the quadrupole sound source, the energy of dipole sound source is concentrated in the relatively low frequency range.

The open circuit voltage (V-oc) of n-i-p type hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells has been examined by means of experimental and numerical modeling. The i- and p-layer limitations on V-oc are separated and the emphasis is to identify the impact of different kinds of p-layers. Hydrogenated protocrystalline, nanocrystalline and microcrystalline silicon p-layers were prepared and characterized using Raman spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), optical transmittance and activation energy of dark-conductivity. The n-i-p a-Si:H solar cells incorporated with these p-layers were comparatively investigated, which demonstrated a wide variation of V-oc from 1.042 V to 0.369 V, under identical i- and n-layer conditions. It is found that the nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) p-layer with a certain nanocrystalline volume fraction leads to a higher V-oc. The optimum p-layer material for n-i-p type a-Si:H solar cells is not found at the onset of the transition between the amorphous to mixed phases, nor is it associated with a microcrystalline material with a large grain size and a high volume fraction of crystalline phase. We have fabricated a quantum dot (QD) structure for long-wavelength temperature-insensitive semiconductor laser by introducing a combined InAlAs and InGaAs overgrowth layer on InAs/GaAs QDs. We found that QDs formed on GaAs (100) substrate by InAs deposition followed by the InAlAs and InGaAs combination layer demonstrate two effects: one is the photoluminescence peak redshift towards 1.35 mum at room temperature, the other is that the energy separation between the ground and first excited states can be up to 103 meV. These results are attributed to the fact that InAs/GaAs intermixing caused by In segregation at substrate temperature of 520 degreesC can be considerably suppressed by the thin InAlAs layer and the strain in the quantum dots can be reduced by the combined InAlAs and InGaAs layer.
