The influence of TeO2 on the crystallization stability, thermal stability, spectroscopic and lasing properties of Yb3+ doped fluorophosphate (FP) glass was studied. It is shown that 2 mol% TeO2 is the optimum doping amount which results in better spectroscopic and lasing properties as well as improve the crystallization and thermal stabilities of the glass. In order to enhance the physical and optical properties further, the effect of PbF2 and ZnF2 to the TeO2 contained FP glasses is also investigated, which shows that PbF2 has advantages in improving the crystallization properties while ZnF2 is preferable in enhancing spectroscopic and lasing properties. Results indicate that the co-existence of TeO2, PbF2 or ZnF2 is an effective way to enhance the spectroscopic, lasing and physical properties of Yb3+ doped FP glasses. Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was functionalized with 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) by using -ray pre-irradiation in air in a twin-screw extruder. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) were used to characterize the formation of LLDPE-g-AMPS copolymers. The content of AMPS in LLDPE-g-AMPS was determined by using element analysis instrument. The effects of concentrations of monomer, reaction temperature and pre-irradiation dose on degree of grafting were investigated. The critical surface tension of LLDPE-g-AMPS was measured by using contact angle method. The influences of the degree of grafting on crystallization properties were studied by using DSC. Compared with neat LLDPE, the crystallization temperature increased about 4C, and crystallinity decreased with increasing degree of grafting. Crystallization rates of grafted LLDPE were faster than that of plain LLDPE at the same crystallization temperature.

Fluorophosphate glasses with various content of Al(PO3)(3) were prepared. With the increment of Al(PO3)(3) content, density decreases while refractive index increases, and transition temperature, crystallization peak temperature and melt temperature increase which were suggested by differential scanning calorimetry. These glasses exhibit the best stability against crystallization with 7-9 mol'Yo Al(PO3)(3) content. Normalized Raman spectra were used to analyze structure and phonon state. The increment of Al(PO3)(3) content does not affect phonon energy but results in the augment of phonon density. Absorption spectra were measured. H-3(6) -> F-3(4) transition exhibits absorption at L band of the third communication window. Compared with the energy of Tm3+ excited states in other glass system, F-3(4) energy of Tm3+ in these glasses is considerable higher and H-3(4) energy is considerable lower, and it can be predicted that emission band of H-3(4) -> F-3(4) transition is close to the amplified band of gain-shift Tm3+ doped fiber amplifier. Analyses of Judd-Ofelt theory suggest when Al(PO3)(3) content is no more than 7 mol%, Judd-Ofelt parameters Omega(t) and the lifetime of H-3(4) energy level of TM3+ vary little with the increment of Al(PO3)(3) content, and when Al(PO3)(3) content is more than 7 mol%, Omega(2) and Omega(6) increase and radiative lifetime of H-3(4) energy level of Tm3+ drops sharply with the increment of Al(PO3)(3) content. Effect of the substitutions of chloride for fluoride on the chemical and physical properties and the crystallization behavior in heavy metal fluoride glasses has been investigated. The characteristic temperature of the glass does not changed obviously when the fluoride was taken place by chloride. Compared with samples of being free of ErF3, the doping samples are more inclined to be surface crystallization. Optical basicity in the glass system increases with increasing the negative charge provided by the chloride atoms and the absorption peak red shifted is observed in absorption spectra. XRD measurements show that not a single crystalline phase appears in the heated glass samples, which indicate the substitutions of chloride for fluoride with a variety of crystalline precipitation trends. Thermal properties and crystallization-behavior of ultrafine fully-vulcanized powdered rubber (UFPR) toughened poly propylene (PP) were studied by Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements. It was found that the fraction of beta-form in the PP crystal increased at first, then sharply deceased up to zero with increasing UFPR content

Morphologies, crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of polypropylene(PP)/syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene(s-1,2 PB) blends were investigated. Morphology observation shows the well dispersed domains of s-1,2 PB in PP matrix with the rather small domain sizes from 0.1 to 0.5 mu m when the s-1,2 PB content increases from 5% to 20% (mass fraction) in the blends, and the phase structure tends to become co-continuous as s-1,2 PB content further increases.

Enhancing the stability of plasticized poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) is necessary for its practical application. In this study, plasticized PLLA (PLLA/PEG 80/20 wt/wt) was crosslinked under I-ray (Co-60) in the presence of triallyl isocyanurate (TALC) as crosslinking agent. FTIR analysis revealed that PLLA, PEG, and TALC formed a cocrosslinking structure. Crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of the crosslinked plasticized PLLA were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tensile tests. Experimental results indicated that the crystallization behaviors of both PEG and PLLA in the blends were restrained after irradiation. The melting peak of PEG in the crystallized samples disappeared at a low irradiation doses about 10 kGy. Although PLLA still owned the behavior of crystallize, its cold crystallization temperature and glass transition temperature shifted to higher temperature. Mechanical properties of the plasticized PLLA were strengthened through crosslinking. Both yield strength and elastic modulus of the samples increased after crosslinking.

Nanocomposites based on poly(iminosebacoyl imino-decamethylene) (PA1010) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were successfully prepared by melt blending technique. environmental scanning electron microscope micrographs of the fracture surfaces showed that not only is there an evenly dispersion of MWNTs throughout the PA1010 matrix but also a strongly interfacial adhesion with the matrix. The combined effect of more defects on MWNTs and low temperature buckling fracture is mainly responsible for the broken tubes. Differential scanning calorimeter results showed that the MWNTs acted as a nucleation agent and increased the crystallization rate and decreased crystallite size. In the linear region, rheological measurements showed a distinct change in the frequency dependence of storage modulus, loss modulus, and complex viscosity particularly at low frequencies. We conclude that the rheological percolation threshold might occur when the content of MWNTs is over 2 wt% in the composites.

In this paper, melt blends of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile testing, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), polarized optical microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that the glass transition temperature of PPC in the 90/10 PPC/PBS blend was decreased by about 11 K comparing with that of pure PPC. The presence of 10% PBS was partially miscible with PPC. The 90/10 PPC/PBS blend had better impact and tensile strength than those of the other PPC/PBS blends. The glass transition temperature of PPC in the 80/20, 70/30, and 60/40 PPC/PBS blends was improved by about 4.9 K, 4.2 K, and 13 K comparing with that of pure PPC, respectively; which indicated the immiscibility between PPC and PBS. The DSC results indicated that the crystallization of PBS became more difficult when the PPC content increased. The matrix of PPC hindered the crystallization process of PBS. While the content of PBS was above 20%, significant crystallization-induced phase separation was observed by polarized optical microscopy. It was found from the WAXD analysis that the crystal structure of PBS did not change, and the degree of crystallinity increased with increasing PBS content in the PPC/PBS blends.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonds, miscibility, crystallization and thermal stability of the blends of biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(3HB-3HHx)] with 4,4-dihydroxydiphenylpropane (DOH2) were investigated by FTIR, C-13 Solid state NMR, DSC, WAXD and TGA. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds were found in both blend systems, which resulted from the carbonyl groups in the amorphous phase of both polyesters and the hydroxyl groups of DOH2. The intermolecular interaction between P(3HB-3HHx) and DOH2 is weaker than that between PHB and DOH2 owing to the steric hindrance of longer 3HHx side chains. Because of the effect of the hydrogen bonds, the chain mobility of both PHB and P(3HB-3HHx) components was limited after blending with DOH2 molecules. Single glass transition temperature depending on the composition was observed in all blends, indicating that those blends were miscible in the melt. The addition of DOH2 suppressed the crystallization of PHB and P(3HB-3HHx) components. Moreover, the crystallinity of PHB and P(3HB-3HHx) components also decreased with increasing DOH2 content in the blends.

The influences of nucleating agent EDBS on crystallization behavior and properties of polypropylene UP) and its copolymer with a small amount (4. 48 %, molar fraction) of ethylene (CPP) were studied. DSC results indicated that the crystallization temperature of iPP and CPP samples with 0.5 % (mass fraction) EDBS obviously increased and the degree of crystallinity of these samples became higher. In addition, adding small amount of EDBS enhanced the crystallization of the low isotacticity and low molecular weight segments of the CPP. PLM results showed that their spherulite size decreased markedly, and as a result, the transmittance and haze of the films were all improved.

The binary blends of polyamide 1010 (PA1010) with the high-impact polystyrene (HIPS)/maleic anhydride (MA) graft copolymer (HIPS-g-MA) and with HIPS were prepared using a wide composition range. Different blend morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy according to the nature and content of PA1010 used. Compared with the PA1010/HIPS binary blends, the domain sizes of dispersed-phase particles in PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends were much smaller than that in PA1010/HIPS blends at the same compositions. It was found that the tensile properties of PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends were obviously better than that of PA 1010/HIPS blends. Wide-angle xray diffraction analyses were performed to confirm that the number of hydrogen bonds in the PA1010 phase decreased in the blends of PA1010/HIPS-g-MA. These behaviors could be attributed to the chemical interactions between the two components and good dispersion in PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends.

The rheological properties and crystallization characteristics of low ethylene content poly propylene (EPM) with and without Yittrium oxide (Y2O3) as a filler was investigated by cone-plate viscometer and differential scanning calorimetry. Yittrium oxide had a profound effect on the viscosities of the systems. To determine the nonisothermal crystallization rate of the materials, a new estimation method was used. From the results, we can conclude that Y2O3 acts as a nucleating agent, which increased the crystallization rate of the EPM. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The formation and mechanical properties of amorphous copper are studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The simulations of tension and shearing show that more pronounced plasticity is found under shearing, compared to tension. Apparent strain hardening and strain rate effect are observed. Interestingly, the variations of number density of atoms during deformation indicate free volume creation, especially under higher strain rate. In particular, it is found that shear induced dilatation does appear in the amorphous metal.
