We present a technique for independently exciting two resonant modes of vibration in a single-crystal silicon bulk mode microresonator using the same electrode configuration through control of the polarity of the DC actuation voltage. Applications of this technique may include built-in temperature compensation by the simultaneous selective excitation of two closely spaced modes that may have different temperature coefficients of resonant frequency. The technique is simple and requires minimum circuit overhead for implementation. The technique is implemented on square plate resonators with quality factors as high as 3.06 × 106. A numerical model is developed to analyse the interaction of artificial cilia with the surrounding fluid in a three-dimensional setting in the limit of vanishing fluid inertia forces. The cilia are modelled using finite shell elements and the fluid is modelled using a boundary element approach. The coupling between both models is performed by imposing no-slip boundary conditions on the surface of the cilia. The performance of the model is verified using various reference problems available in the literature. The model is used to simulate the fluid flow due to magnetically actuated artificial cilia. The results show that narrow and closely spaced cilia create the largest flow, that metachronal waves along the width of the cilia create a significant flow in the direction of the cilia width and that the recovery stroke in the case of the out-of-plane actuation of the cilia strongly depends on the cilia width. © 2012 Cambridge University Press.

The absolute responses of the NPL liquid scintillation spectrometers to monoenergetic neutrons and gammas were measured at various energies in the ranges 1.2 - 17 MeV approximately for neutrons and 0.28 - 1.8 MeV for gammas. Additional measurements of the proton light output function were also carried out. Calculated responses were then obtained for the larger detector using the programs NRESP7 and PHRESP, and compared with the absolute measurements. Finally, response matrices for this detector were generated using responses calculated at closely spaced energies.

Results are given for bistable effects in closely coupled twin stripe lasers. These devices use controlled adjustment of asymmetric transverse optical gain to obtain bistability. Various bistable effects have been observed. Initially the authors reported a large light/current hysteresis loop obtained as the drive current to the laser was raised and lowered. Information concerning the bistable mechanisms was then obtained by applying small current pulses into each stripe. It was thus found that bistability was involved with the switching from one stable laser waveguiding mechanism to another. More recently the experimental measurement system has been much improved. Through the use of computer control of motorised micromovements and computer controlled data management, time resolved near and far field, and charge carrier concentration distribution measurements have been more accurately carried out. The paper will outline briefly this system, and report on how it has helped to reveal new mechanisms of bistability in twin stripe lasers.
