Computing abuse related damages in the case of new entry: An illustration for the Directory Enquiry Services market

A number of European countries, among which the UK and Spain, have opened up their Directory Enquiry Services (DQs, or 118AB) market to competition. We analyse the Spanish case, where both local and foreign firms challenged the incumbent as of April 2003. We argue that the incumbent had the ability to abuse its dominant position, and that it was a perfectly rational strategy. In short,the incumbent raised its rivals' costs directly by providing an inferior quality version of the (essential) input, namely the incumbent's subscribers' database. We illustrate how it is possible to quantify the effect of abuse in situation were the entrant has no previous history in the market. To do this, we use the UK experience to construct the relevant counterfactual, that is the "but for abuse" scenario. After controlling for relative prices and advertising intensity, we find that one of the foreign entrants achieved a Spanish market share of only half of what it would have been in the absence of abuse.

[EN] Atemschaukel approaches the falling apart and survival in a historically loaded space, such as a labour camp. This novel offers a relevant research field for the space analysis, focused from the perspective of the Spatial Turn, as not only this theoretical frame but also Herta Müller herself conceive of space as a process, unterstood as a reciprocal interaction with the social practice, thus as a spatial and social construct. The representation of space in Atemschaukel is described in this article as a “swinging movement between boxes and abyss”, where the discourse of Leopold Auberg’s memories oscillates between closed and square spaces, on one hand, and open and giddy spaces, on the other hand. In this oscillating movement it is the open spaces that will most clearly show the process of inner destruction of the subject in such oppressive situations as on labour camps, as well as the permanent damages of deportation.

Nuevos phased arrays

[ES]El sistema PAMELA III, con sus correspondientes phased arrays, se diseñó para la detección de daños en aeronaves mediante la tecnología SHM (structural health monitoring). Sin embargo, según los estudios del profesor Tadeusz Stepinski, la distribución de los piezoélectricos utilizada en estos phase arrays producen interferencias. Por ello, este proyecto se basa en el diseño de cuatro phased arrays diferentes, utilizando una de las distribuciones de piezoélectricos estudiada por el profesor Tadeusz. La distribución utilizada es la de cross-shaped (en forma de cruz), con lo que se consigue disminuir las interferencias producidas en los antiguos phased arrays. Además, se ha producido un diseño que es compatible tanto con PAMELA III, como con una futura actualización a PAMELA IV. Con lo que se ha conseguido que se pueda aumentar el tamaño de almacenamiento de la memoria utilizada cambiando la tecnología 1-wire por la de I2C, que sería utilizada solo en el sistema PAMELA IV. Aparte del diseño de los PCBs, también se han diseñado unas piezas de plástico que aportan rigidez a los phased arrays y además, hace que la parte inferior de la tarjeta quede toda a la misma altura y no sobresalgan los piezoélectricos, con lo que aumentará la facilidad de instalación.

Análisis de accidente grave de un establecimiento afectado por la directiva 2012/18/UE.

[Es]Los establecimientos industriales a los que la directiva 2012/18/UE es de aplicación deben establecer las acciones necesarias para controlar y planificar los riesgos inherentes a los accidentes graves que pueden ser causados por sustancias peligrosas. Esta directiva obliga a los establecimientos afectados clasificados como nivel superior a elaborar un informe de seguridad en el que se realicen análisis de riesgos de los posibles accidentes graves con el fin de calcular los posibles daños que pudieran producirse. Para ello se siguen una serie de metodologías que incluyen desde el análisis de las posibles hipótesis de accidente grave hasta el cálculo de sus consecuencias para personas, bienes materiales y medio ambiente. El informe técnico trata de analizar las consecuencias de un accidente real provocado por una nube tóxica de dióxido de nitrógeno (NO2) y se comparan sus resultados con los datos reales del accidente. Asimismo se utilizan una serie de supuestos para analizar las consecuencias de un escenario de riesgo en la misma instalación que debiera estar incluido en el informe de seguridad.

The conventional facade solution during the developmental period in Gipuzkoa: decline (and end) of a construction system

The article analyses the construction process, the evolution and the disturbing future of the facade enclosure of the collective housing constructions built during the developmental period in the province of Gipuzkoa. 128 residential complexes were checked, and 17 people who directly took part in the construction of many of these buildings were interviewed. After examining the material and elements that make up the conventional facade solution used in Gipuzkoa and in much of Spain not only during those years but also up to the present time, the effects and causes of its main damages and flaws were studied. Its complex and costly adaptation to current demands is going to require a strong effort from society at large, and this raises the question of whether the life cycle of this construction system should be terminated once and for all.
