Inlets are common coastal features around the world. Essentially an inlet connects a lagoon, a bay or an estuary to the ocean (or sea), and the flow through the inlet channel is primarily induced by the tidal rise and fall of water level in the ocean. When speaking of the hydraulics of an inlet, one is interested mainly in determining the flow through the inlet and the tidal variation in the bay, given the following: (1) Inlet geometry (2) Bay geometry (3) Bottom sediment characteristics in the inlet (4) Fresh water inflow into the bay (and out through the inlet) (5) Ocean tide characteristics A combination of all these factors can produce a rather complex situation. Fishing vessels where electric power supply from alternator is available to operate various auxiliaries located anywhere in the vessel, the small crafts, which constitute over 95% of the total fishing crafts operating in India, are entirely dependent on one source of power, i. e. the main diesel engine. To utilize this source of motive power to operate the winches and other auxiliaries, mechanical drive involving shafts, bearings and pulleys, is inconvenient. This paper presents basic advantages of hydraulic system over mechanical drive.

This is the Report on Proposed Improvements to Teignmouth Harbour from 15th March, 1971 prepared for the Teignmouth Harbour Commission. It reviews the Scheme III Breakwater along the lines recommended by the Hydraulics Research Station and the implications of deepening the berths at the Eastern Quay to a depth of thirteen feet below chart datum. The layout of the Hydraulics Research Scheme III Breakwater, as described in Para.16 of their Report No. EX489 dated April 1970, is shown on the accompanying Key Plan to a scale of 1:2500. It contains a subsoil survey and boreholes structure. It goes through the permissible draughts of ships and turning area, training wall, deepening of the eastern quay dredging and sewage dispersal.
