General Circulation Models (GCMs) may be useful in estimating the ecological impacts of global climatic change. We analyzed seasonal weather patterns over the conterminous United States and determined that regional patterns of rainfall seasonality appear to control the distributions of the Nation's major biomes. These regional patterns were compared to the output from three GCMs for validation. The models appear to simulate the appropriate seasonal climates in the northern tier of states. However, the spatial extent of these regions is distorted. None of the models accurately portrayed rainfall seasonalities in the southern tier of states, where biomes are primarily influenced by the Bermuda High.

Four species of Gracilaria are investigated for their free amino-acid contents, as well as amino-acid constituents in the proteins and the peptides, using quantitative paper chromatographic technique. Amino-acid constituents of different species of Gracilaria differ only in amount, while free amino-acids and the amino-acids in the peptides vary both in quality and quantity. A number of amino-acids recorded as protein constituents have even escaped detection in the peptides, while in the free state they occur either in all the species or in some only except homocystine. Moreover, some amino-acids occur exclusively in the free state.

Caulerpa racemosa var. macrophysa, C. racemosa var cornyphora and C. scalpelliformis are analyzed by quantitative paper chromatographic technique for their amino acid contents in proteins, peptides and free state. It is found that no appreciable variation occurs in the quality of amino acid make up in these algae; but quantitative differences are apparent in them. Moreover, both qualitative and quantitative variations occur in the amino acid make up of the peptides, and in the free state. The results are compared with those of the other investigations.

The short-term preservation of Brachionus calyciflorus for 45 days at three different temperatures (4, -4 and -20°C) led to decrease in protein, lipid and carbohydrate contents in all the three cases. However, the rate of deterioration was much higher at 4C than at -4 and -20°C. At 4C, protein, lipid and carbohydrate contents reduced by 76.78, 81.11 and 62.83%, respectively, and at -4°C, these were 27.94, 37.46 and 18.42%, respectively, whereas at -20°C, the deterioration was limited to 9.28, 16.44 and 11.35%, respectively, when compared with the control values. Thus, preservation at -20°C is comparatively better as it exerts limited effect on the protein, lipid and carbohydrate contents of B. calycijlorus.

Fat and water contents of the muscles and gonads in relation to gonad growth in Otolithus argentes from Karwar are reported. Water content showed an inverse relationship to lipid in both the sexes. Variation in somatic body weight was found associated with the fluctuations in lipid contents.

The moisture and free alpha amino nitrogen contents of some important food fishes and shell fishes of Kakinada region have been studied. Crustaceans and molluscs contain free alpha amino acids in quantities several times higher than all other aquatic animals examined in this study. Their probable role in the physiological activities of these animals has been discussed.

Participants were exposed to concepts and information about EAFM using a structured, participatory method of delivery. The learning strategy involved pre- and post-course assessment as well as 4-6 month follow up at outcome level to assess improves EAFM practices. The report outlines methodology details of content and the daily feedback process.
