Diet and feeding ecology of two sizes of Barbodes gonionotus (=Puntius gonionotus) and Oreochromis sp. in ricefields in Bangladesh

Fish culture experiments were conducted to compare and evaluate the feeding pattern and strategies, daily ration, gastric evacuation rates, dietary breadth, similarity and overlap of silver barb, Barbodes gonionotus, and tilapia, Oreochromis sp. (natural hybrid of O. mossambicus x O. niloticus) in a rice-fish system. B. gonionotus was found to be a macrophtophagous column feeder while Oreochromis sp. was a detrivorous benthophagic browser. Ontogenic shifts in diet were clearly observed in B. gonionotus while absent in Oreochromis sp. For both species, daily food ration for the small fish was twice as large as that for the large fish. Mean rates of gastric evacuation were 0.18 h super(1) for small and 0.05 h super(1) for large B. gonionotus and 0.09 h super(1) and 0.14h super(1) for small and large Oreochromis sp., respectively. In terms of intraspecific dietary width, the smaller sized individuals of both species had a wider dietary niche than the larger conspecifics. Larger fish increased their specialization and reliance on few food items with increasing size and competitive ability. When both species were reared together, B. gonionotus showed a wider niche width than tilapia. Wider interspecific niche width of B. gonionotus compared to that of tilapia and significant interspecific dietary overlap is likely to result in suppression of the growth of tilapia in mixed culture due to: 1) a high degree of specialization and reliance of tilapia on food of low-nutrient value, and 2) slower gastric evacuation rates as compared to B. gonionotus, which would allow B. gonionotus to outgrow similar sized tilapia.

Estimating the Economic Impact of the Wild Shrimp, Penaeus sp., Fishery: A Study of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana

Two approaches are used to estimate the economic impact of domestic wild shrimp, Penaeus sp., fishing in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. A 2002 survey of commercial shrimp fishermen in the Parish yields information on sales and operating costs, and results are used to estimate a 1-yr sales effect in the Parish of $36.7 to $128.1 million due to shrimp fishing. In addition, 2001 shrimp ticket sales data ($49.9 million) are input into a REMI (Regional Economic Models, Inc.) model built for the 4-parish bayou region of Louisiana. The REMI model forecasts a year 1 reduction in gross regional product (GRP) of $45.9 million in the 4-parish area if the shrimp fishing industry were to disappear in Terrebonne Parish, and an 8-yr cumulative negative impact on GRP in the bayou region of $191.3 million. Study limitations and suggestions for future research are included.

Juvenile Red Rockfish, Sebastes sp., Associations with Sponges in the Gulf of Alaska

In 2001, a research submersible was used to survey seafloor habitat and associated benthos in the northeastern Gulf of Alaska. One inspected site had a uniform sand-silt substrate, punctuated by widely spaced (10–20 m apart) boulders. Two-thirds of the boulders had sponge, Aphrocallistes sp., colonies. Eighty-two juvenile (5–10 cm) red rockfish (Sebastes sp.) were also observed during the dive, and all of these fish were closely associated with the sponges. No juvenile red rockfish were seen in proximity to boulders without sponges, nor were any observed on the sand-silt substrate between boulders.

Tuberculosis in seals caused by a novel member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex: Mycobacterium pinnipedii sp. nov.

A comparison of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates from seals (pinnipeds) in Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, Great Britain and New Zealand was undertaken to determine their relationships to each other and their taxonomic position within the complex. Isolates from 30 cases of tuberculosis in six species of pinniped and seven related isolates were compared to representative and standard strains of the M. tuberculosis complex. The seal isolates could be distinguished from other members of the M. tuberculosis complex, including the recently defined ‘Mycobacterium canettii’ and ‘Mycobacterium caprae’, on the basis of host preference and phenotypic and genetic tests. Pinnipeds appear to be the natural host for this ‘seal bacillus’, although the organism is also pathogenic in guinea pigs, rabbits, humans, Brazilian tapir (Tapirus terrestris) and, possibly, cattle. Infection caused by the seal bacillus is predominantly associated with granulomatous lesions in the peripheral lymph nodes, lungs, pleura, spleen and peritoneum. Cases of disseminated disease have been found. As with other members of the M. tuberculosis complex, aerosols are the most likely route of transmission. Effect of different feeds and water salinities on the cyst production of brine shrimp, Artemia sp.

Effect of different feeds and salinities on cyst production in Artemia sp. was studied. Among the 12 different feeds used, ragi powder suspension showed the best growth and cyst production. A wide range of salinity from 90 to 210‰ was used to study its effect on cyst production. Among all these treatments, 130‰ salinity was found suitable for induction of oviparity and cyst production in the San Francisco Bay strain of Artemia sp.

Storage life of silverbelly (Leiognathus sp.) with delayed icing

Silver belly (leiognathus splendens) caught in September spoiled faster than the fish caught in May. This could be due to seasonal changes. For silver belly, Total Volatile Base (TVB) value could be used as a measure of spoilage. At the beginning of spoilage TVB value is between 30-40 mg. N/100g sample. The main spoilage for silver belly appears to start between 6 and 8 hours (at 28° C-30°C) after landing on board. Therefore it is not necessary to ice silverbelly immediately; it seems to be sufficient if icing can be done within 6 hours of landing on board.

Heliconema savala n.sp. (Nematoda:Physalopteridae) from marine fish Lepturacanthus savala (Cuvier) (Trichiuridae) and Psettodes erumei (Schneider) new host (Pisces:Pettodidae) of Physalopterid Nematode, Bulbocephalus inglisi Rasheed, 1966 in Pakistan

Helicnonema savala, n.sp. obtained from the marine fish, Lepturacanthus savala in Sindh coast is distinguished from members of the genus processing in the male 10 tessellated longtitudinal ridges and a spicule ratio 1:15. Females have vulvular flap. Heliconema savala is a morphologically most closely related to Heliconema heliconema. The marine fish, Psettodes erumei is recorded as a new host of Bulbocephalus inglisi.

Canning of smoked dhoma (Sciaenid sp.)

A process for the preparation of a wholesome smoked and canned product from dhoma (Sciaenid sp.) is discussed. The dressed dhoma is cold blanched in 15% brine containing 0.5% potash alum and 0.2% citric acid and smoked for 120 minutes at 45 ± 5°C. The smoked fish after filling in cans is precooked at 0.35 kg/sq.cm steam pressure for 50 minutes in inverted position, filled with hot refined groundnut oil, sealed and processed for 60 minutes at 0.7 kg/sq.cm steam pressure.

Investigations on long distance transportation of fish. 5. Transportation of filleted and round seer fish (Scomberomorus sp.) from Kakinada to Calcutta by rail

Iced seer fish (Scomberomorus sp.) was transported by rail in expanded polystyrene insulated plywood boxes from Kakinada to Calcutta in round and fillet forms. While both withstood the rigors of transportation squarely, the fillets fetched only half the price of round fish in the auction conducted at the Calcutta market.
