In order to determine the properties of the bicycloheptatrienyl anion (Ia) (predicted to be conjugatively stabilized by Hückel Molecular Orbital Theory) the neutral precursor, bicyclo[3. 2. 0] hepta-1, 4, 6-triene (I) was prepared by the following route.
Reaction of I with potassium-t-butoxide, potassium, or lithium dicyclohexylamide gave anion Ia in very low yield. Reprotonation of I was found to occur solely at the 1 or 5 position to give triene II, isolated as to its dimers.
A study of the acidity of I and of other conjugated hydrocarbons by means of ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy resulted in determination of the following order of relative acidities:
H2S ˃ C5H6 ˃ CH3NO2 ˃ 1, 4- C5H8 ˃ I ˃ C2H5OH ˃ H2O; cyclo-C7H8 ˃ C2 H5OH; <i>фi>CH3 ˃ CH3OH
In addition, limits for the proton affinities of the conjugate bases were determined:
350 kcal/mole ˂ PA(C5 H5-) ˂ 360 kcal/mole
362 kcal/mole ˂ PA(C5H7-, Ia, cyclo-C7H7-) ˂ 377 kcal/mole PA(<i>фi>CH2-) ˂ 385 kcal/mole
Gas phase kinetics of the trans-XVIII to I transformation gave the following activation parameters: Ea = 43.0 kcal/mole, log A = 15.53 and ∆Sǂ (220°) = 9.6 cu. The results were interpreted as indicating initial 1,2 bond cleavage to give the 1,3-diradical which closed to I. Similar studies on cis-XVIII gave results consistent with a surface component to the reaction (Ea = 22.7 kcal/mole; log A = 9.23, ∆Sǂ (119°) = -18.9 eu).
The low pressure (0.01 to 1 torr) pyrolysis of trans-XVIII gave in addition to I, fulvenallene (LV), ethynylcyclopentadiene (LVI) and heptafulvalene (LVII). The relative ratios of the C7H6 isomers were found to be dependent upon temperature and pressure, higher relative pressure and lower temperatures favoring formation of I. The results were found to be consistent with the intermediacy of vibrationally excited I and subsequent reaction to give LV and LVI.

Zintl phases, a subset of intermetallic compounds characterized by covalently-bonded "sub-structures," surrounded by highly electropositive cations, exhibit precisely the characteristics desired for thermoelectric applications. The requirement that Zintl compounds satisfy the valence of anions through the formation of covalent substructures leads to many unique, complex crystal structures. Such complexity often leads to exceptionally low lattice thermal conductivity due to the containment of heat in low velocity optical modes in the phonon dispersion. To date, excellent thermoelectric properties have been demonstrated in several Zintl compounds. However, compared with the large number of known Zintl phases, very few have been investigated as thermoelectric materials.
From this pool of uninvestigated compounds, we selected a class of Zintl antimonides that share a common structural motif: anionic moieties resembling infinite chains of linked <i>Mi>Sb4 tetrahedra, where $M$ is a triel element. The compounds discussed in this thesis (Aitalic>5Mitalic>2Sb6 and <i>Ai>3<i>Mi>Sb3, where <i>Ai> = Ca or Sr and <i>Mi> = Al, Ga and In) crystallize as four distinct, but closely related "chain-forming" structure types. This thesis describes the thermoelectric characterization and optimization of these phases, and explores the influence of their chemistry and structure on the thermal and electronic transport properties. Due to their large unit cells, each compound exhibits exceptionally low lattice thermal conductivity (0.4 - 0.6 W/mK at 1000 K), approaching the predicted glassy minimum at high temperatures. A combination of Density Functional calculations and classical transport models were used to explain the experimentally observed electronic transport properties of each compound. Consistent with the Zintl electron counting formalism, Aitalic>5Mitalic>2Sb6 and <i>Ai>3<i>Mi>Sb3 phases were found to have filled valence bands and exhibit intrinsic electronic properties. Doping with divalent transition metals (Zn2+ and Mn2+) on the <i>Mi>3+ site, or Na1+ on the <i>Ai>3+ site allowed for rational control of the carrier concentration and a transition towards degenerate semiconducting behavior. In optimally-doped samples, promising peak <i>zTi> values between 0.4 and 0.9 were obtained, highlighting the value of continued investigations of complex Zintl phases.

This thesis consists of three essays in the areas of political economy and game theory, unified by their focus on the effects of pre-play communication on equilibrium outcomes.
Communication is fundamental to elections. Chapter 2 extends canonical voter turnout models, where citizens, divided into two competing parties, choose between costly voting and abstaining, to include any form of communication, and characterizes the resulting set of Aumann's correlated equilibria. In contrast to previous research, high-turnout equilibria exist in large electorates and uncertain environments. This difference arises because communication can coordinate behavior in such a way that citizens find it incentive compatible to follow their correlated signals to vote more. The equilibria have expected turnout of at least twice the size of the minority for a wide range of positive voting costs.
In Chapter 3 I introduce a new equilibrium concept, called subcorrelated equilibrium, which fills the gap between Nash and correlated equilibrium, extending the latter to multiple mediators. Subcommunication equilibrium similarly extends communication equilibrium for incomplete information games. I explore the properties of these solutions and establish an equivalence between a subset of subcommunication equilibria and Myerson's quasi-principals' equilibria. I characterize an upper bound on expected turnout supported by subcorrelated equilibrium in the turnout game.
Chapter 4, co-authored with Thomas Palfrey, reports a new study of the effect of communication on voter turnout using a laboratory experiment. Before voting occurs, subjects may engage in various kinds of pre-play communication through computers. We study three communication treatments: No Communication, a control; Public Communication, where voters exchange public messages with all other voters, and Party Communication, where messages are exchanged only within one's own party. Our results point to a strong interaction effect between the form of communication and the voting cost. With a low voting cost, party communication increases turnout, while public communication decreases turnout. The data are consistent with correlated equilibrium play. With a high voting cost, public communication increases turnout. With communication, we find essentially no support for the standard Nash equilibrium turnout predictions.

The hydroxyketone C-3, an intermediate in the stereo-selective total synthesis of dl-Desoxypodocarpic acid (ii), has been shown by both degradative and synthetic pathways to rearrange in the presence of base to diosphenol E-1 (5-isoabietic acid series). The exact spatial arrangements of the systems represented by formulas C-3 and E-1 have been investigated (as the p-bromobenzoates) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The hydroxyketone F-1, the proposed intermediate in the rearrangement, has been synthesized. Its conversion to diosphenol E-1 has been studied, and a single-crystal analysis of the p-bromobenzoate derivative has been performed. The initially desired diosphenol C-6 has been prepared, and has been shown to be stable to the potassium t-butoxide rearrangement conditions. Oxidative cleavage of diosphenol E-1 and subsequent cyclization with the aid of polyphosphoric acid has been shown to lead to keto acid I-2 (benzobicyclo [3.3.1] nonane series) rather than keto acid H-2 (5-isoabietic acid series).
