The Johnny Lyon Hills area is located in Cochise County in southeastern Arizona. The rocks of the area include a central core of Lower pre-Cambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks surrounded by a complexly faulted and tilted section of Upper pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic strata. Limited exposures of Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks are present at the north end of the map area. Late Tertiary and Quaternary alluvium almost completely surrounds and overlaps upon the older rocks.

The older pre-Cambrian rocks include a section of more than 9000 feet of generally moderately metamorphosed graywackes, slates and conglomerates of the Pinal schist injected in zones by somewhat younger rnyolite sheets. The original sediments were deposited in a geosyncline whose extent probably included large parts of Arizona, New Mexico and west Texas. During the Mazatzal Revolution the Pinal schist was deformed into northeast-trending, steeply dipping and plunging structures and the entire local section was overturned steeply toward the northwest. The pre-Cambrian Johnny Lyon granodiorite was emplaced as a large epi-tectonic pluton which modified the metamorphic character of part of the Pinal schist. Larsen method determinations indicate an age of about 715 million years for this rock, which is about the minimum age compatible with the geologic relations.

The Laramide orogeny produced numerous major thrust faults in the area involving all rocks older than and including the Lower Cretaceous Bisbee group. Major compression from the southwest and subsequent superimposed thrusting from the southeast and east are indicated. Minimum thrust displacements of more than a mile are clear and the probable displacements are of much greater magnitude. The crystalline core behaved as a single structural unit and probably caused important local divergences from the regional pattern of northeast-trending compressive forces. The massif was rotated as a unit 40 degrees or more about a northwest-trending axis overturning the pre-Cambrian fold axes in the Pinal schist.

Swarms of Late Cretaceous(?) or Early Tertiary(?) lamprophyric dikes cross the Laramide structures and are probably related to the large Texas Canyon stock several miles southeast of the map area. Intermittent high angle faulting, both older and younger than the dikes, has continued since the Laramide orogeny and has been superimposed on the older structures. This steep faulting combined with the fundamental northwesterly Laramide structural grain to produce the northwesterly trends characteristic of the mountain ridges and valleys of the area.

The extraordinary importance that has been attached to money throughout the ages may be appreciated when such modern writers as Alexander Delmar suggest that the history of money is the history of civilization. While this view is not accepted by most writers of the subject, all are nevertheless agreed that money plays a role of enormous importance in the affairs of men. Even in the classics are found quotations which stress this importance of the pecuniary unit upon ethical as well as economic standards.

Spectral data are presented, giving intensities of the Brackett ɤ (B7) line at six positions in M 42 and of the Brackett ten through fourteen (B10-B14) lines plus the He 4d3D-3p3p0 line at three positions in M 42. Observations of the Brackett ɤ line are also given for the planetary nebulae NGC 7027 and IC 418. Brackett gamma is shown to exhibit an anomalous satellite line in NGC 7027. Broadband data are presented, giving intensities at effective wavelengths of 1.25 μ, 1.65 μ, 2.2 μ, 3.5 μ and 4.8 μ for three positions in M 42.

Comparisons with visual and radio data as well as 12 micron and 20 micron data are used to derive reddening, electron temperatures, and electron densities for M 42 and the two planetaries, as well as a helium abundance for M 42. A representative electron temperature of 8400°K ± 1000°K, an electron density of 1.5 ±0.1 x 103 cm-3 and a He/H number density ratio of 0.10 +0.10/-0.05 are derived for the central region of M 42. The electron temperature is found to increase slightly with distance from the Trapezium.

M 42 is shown to emit in excess of the predicted recombination radiation throughout the entire infrared spectrum. The variations in the excess with wavelength and with position are analyzed to determine which of several physical processes may be operating. The longer wavelength infrared excess is shown to be dominated by dust emission, while the shorter wavelength infrared excess is caused by dust scattering. The dust is shown to be larger than the average interstellar particle. A new feature of the Orion red star ORS-1 is found in that it appears to have a reflection nebula around it.

The energy spectra of tritons and Helium-3 nuclei from the reactions 3He(d,t)2p, 3H(d,3He)2n, 3He(d,3He)pn, and 3H(d,t)pn were measured between 6° and 20° at a bombarding energy of 10.9 MeV. An upper limit of 5 μb/sr. was obtained for producing a bound di-neutron at 6° and 7.5°. The 3He(d,t)2p and 3H(d,3He)2n data, together with previous measurements at higher energies, have been used to investigate whether one can unambiguously extract information on the two-nucleon system from these three-body final state reactions. As an aid to these theoretical investigations, Born approximation calculations were made employing realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials and an antisymmetrized final state wave function for the five-particle system. These calculations reproduce many of the features observed in the experimental data and indicate that the role of exchange processes cannot be ignored. The results show that previous attempts to obtain information on the neutron-neutron scattering length from the 3H(d,3He)2n reaction may have seriously overestimated the precision that could be attained.

The problem of the representation of signal envelope is treated, motivated by the classical Hilbert representation in which the envelope is represented in terms of the received signal and its Hilbert transform. It is shown that the Hilbert representation is the proper one if the received signal is strictly bandlimited but that some other filter is more appropriate in the bandunlimited case. A specific alternative filter, the conjugate filter, is proposed and the overall envelope estimation error is evaluated to show that for a specific received signal power spectral density the proposed filter yields a lower envelope error than the Hilbert filter.

This thesis presents methods by which electrical analogies can be obtained for nonlinear systems. The accuracy of these methods is investigated and several specific types of nonlinear equations are studied in detail.

In Part I a general method is given for obtaining electrical analogs of nonlinear systems with one degree of freedom. Loop and node methods are compared and the stability of the loop analogy is briefly considered.

Parts II and III give a description of the equipment and a discussion of its accuracy. Comparisons are made between experimental and analytic solutions of linear systems.

Part IV is concerned with systems having a nonlinear restoring force. In particular, solutions of Duffing's equation are obtained, both by using the electrical analogy and also by approximate analytical methods.

Systems with nonlinear damping are considered in Part V. Two specific examples are chosen: (1) forced oscillations and (2) self-excited oscillations (van der Pol’s equation). Comparisons are made with approximate analytic solutions.

Part VI gives experimental data for a system obeying Mathieu's equation. Regions of stability are obtained. Examples of subharmonic, ultraharmonic, and ultrasubharmonic oscillat1ons are shown.
