The use of modular or ‘micro’ maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converters at module level in series association, commercially known as “power optimizers”, allows the individual adaptation of each panel to the load, solving part of the problems related to partial shadows and different tilt and/or orientation angles of the photovoltaic (PV) modules. This is particularly relevant in building integrated PV systems. This paper presents useful behavioural analytical studies of cascade MPPT converters and evaluation test results of a prototype developed under a Spanish national research project. On the one hand, this work focuses on the development of new useful expressions which can be used to identify the behaviour of individual MPPT converters applied to each module and connected in series, in a typical grid-connected PV system. On the other hand, a novel characterization method of MPPT converters is developed, and experimental results of the prototype are obtained: when individual partial shading is applied, and they are connected in a typical grid connected PV array

This paper presents a microinverter to be integrated into a solar module. The proposed solution combines a forward converter and a constant off-time boundary mode control, providing MPPT capability and unity power factor in a single-stage converter. The transformer structure of the power stage remains as in the classical DC-DC forward converter. Transformer primary windings are utilized for power transfer or demagnetization depending on the grid semi-cycle. Furthermore, bidirectional switches are used on the secondary side allowing direct connection of the inverter to the grid. Design considerations for the proposed solution are provided, regarding the inductance value, transformer turns ratio and frequency variation during a line semi-cycle. The decoupling of the twice the line frequency power pulsation is also discussed, as well as the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) capability. Simulation and experimental results for a 100W prototype are enclosed

This paper proposes a new model for characterizing the energetic behavior of grid connected PV inverters. The model has been obtained from a detailed study of main loss processes in small size PV inverters in the market. The main advantage of the used method is to obtain a model that comprises two antagonistic features, since both are simple, easy to compute and apply, and accurate. One of the main features of this model is how it handles the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and the efficiency: in both parts the model uses the same approach and it is achieved by two resistive elements which simulate the losses inherent to each parameter. This makes this model easy to implement, compact and refined. The model presented here also includes other parameters, such as start threshold, standby consumption and islanding behavior. In order to validate the model, the values of all the parameters listed above have been obtained and adjusted using field measurements for several commercial inverters, and the behavior of the model applied to a particular inverter has been compared with real data under different working conditions, taken from a facility located in Madrid. The results show a good fit between the model values and the real data. As an example, the model has been implemented in PSPICE electronic simulator, and this approach has been used to teach grid-connected PV systems. The use of this model for the maintenance of working PV facilities is also shown.

ABSTRACT This work is a contribution to photovoltaic (PV) systems with distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT), a system topology characterized by performing the MPPT at module level, instead of the more traditional topologies which perform MPPT for a larger number of modules. The two DMPPT technologies available at the moment are known as microinverters and power optimizers, also known as module level power electronics (MLPE), and they provide certain advantages over central MPPT systems like: higher energy production in mismatch situations, monitoring of each individual module, system design flexibility, higher system safety, etc. Although DMPPT is not limited to urban environments, it has been emphasized in the title as it is their natural market, since in large ground-mounted PV plants the extra cost is difficult to justify. Since 2010 MLPE have increased their market share steadily and continuing to grow steadily. However, there still lacks a profound understanding of how they work, especially in the case of power optimizers, the achievable energy gains with their use and the possibilities in failure diagnosis. The main objective of this thesis is to provide a complete understanding of DMPPT technologies: how they function, their limitations and their advantages. A series of equations used to model PV arrays with power optimizers have been derived and used to point out limitations in solving certain mismatch situation. Because one of the most emphasized benefits of DMPPT is their ability to mitigate shading losses, an extensive study on the effects of shadows on PV systems is presented; both on the I-V curve and on MPPT algorithms. Experimental tests have been performed on the MPPT algorithms of central inverters and MLPE, highlighting their inefficiency in I-V curves with local maxima. An analysis of the possible mitigation of hot-spots with DMPPT is discussed and experimentally verified. And a theoretical analysis of the possible power and energy gains is presented as well as experiments in real PV systems. A short economic analysis of the benefits of DMPPT has also been performed. In order to aide in the previous task, a program which simulates I-V curves under shaded conditions has been developed and experimentally verified. This same program has been used to develop a software tool especially designed for PV systems affected by shading, which estimates the losses due to shading and the energy gains obtained with DMPPT. Finally, a set of algorithms for diagnosing system faults in PV systems with DMPPT has been developed and experimentally verified. The tool can diagnose the following failures: fixed object shading (with distance estimation), localized dirt, generalized dirt, possible hot-spots, module degradation and excessive losses in DC cables. In addition, it alerts the user of the power losses produced by each failure and classifies the failures by their severity and it does not require the use of irradiance or temperature sensors.

The inverter in a photovoltaic system assures two essential functions. The first is to track the maximum power point of the system IV curve throughout variable environmental conditions. The second is to convert DC power delivered by the PV panels into AC power. Nowadays, in order to qualify inverters, manufacturers and certifying organisms use mainly European and/or CEC efficiency standards. The question arises if these are still representative of CPV system behaviour. We propose to use a set of CPV – specific weighted average and a representative dynamic response to have a better determination of the static and dynamic MPPT efficiencies. Four string-sized commercial inverters used in real CPV plants have been tested.

The 1-diode/2-resistors electric circuit equivalent to a photovoltaic system is analyzed. The equations at particular points of the I–V curve are studied considering the maximum number of terms. The maximum power point as a boundary condition is given special attention. A new analytical method is developed based on a reduced amount of information, consisting in the normal manufacturer data. Results indicate that this new method is faster than numerical methods and has similar (or better) accuracy than other existing methods, numerical or analytical.

A new method has recently been proposed by us for accurate measurement of the solar cell temperature in any operational regime, in particular, at a maximum power point (MPP) of the I-V curve (T-p-n(MPP)). For this, fast switching of a cell from MPP to open circuit (OC) regime is carried out and open circuit voltage V-oc is measured immediately (within about 1 millisecond), so that this value becomes to be an indicator of T-p-n(MPP). In the present work, we have considered a practical case, when a solar cell is heated not only by absorption of light incident upon its surface (called "photoactive" absorption of power), but also by heat transferred from structural elements surrounding the cell and heated by absorption of direct or diffused sunlight ("non-photoactive" absorption of power with respect to a solar cell). This process takes place in any concentrator module with non-ideal concentrators. Low overheating temperature of the p-n junction (or p-n junctions in a multijunction cell) is a cumulative parameter characterizing the quality of a solar module by the factor of heat removal effectiveness and, at the same time, by the factor of low "non-photoactive" losses.

ABSTRACT. The aim of the characterization of concentrator photovoltaic modules (CPV) is to provide the electrical specifications to know the energy efficiency at operating conditions. This characterization is achieved through IV curves measures, the same way that they are obtained to characterize conventional silicon modules. The objective of this project is the optimization and improvement of a measurement and characterization system for CPV modules. A software has been developed in LabVIEW for the operation of the measurement system and data acquisition of the IV curves of the modules. At first, an already deployed application was taken as the basis and its operation was analyzed in order to optimize and extend to introduce new features. The more relevant update seeks to prevent the situation in which the module is dissipating all the energy between measurements. This has been achieved by introducing an electronic load into the measuring system. This load maintains the module biased at its maximum power point between measurement periods. This work describes the devices that take part in the measurement system, as well as the software program developed. In addition, a user manual is included for an easy handling of the program.

The performance of tandem stacks of Group III?V multijunction solar cells continues to improve rapidly, both through improved performance of the individual cells in the stack and throughi ncrease in the number of stacked cells. As the radiative efficiency of these individual cells increases, radiative coupling between the stacked cells becomes an increasingly important factor not only in cell design, but also in accurate efficiency measurement and in determining performance of cells and systems under varying spectral conditions in the field. Past modeling has concentrated on electroluminescent coupling between the cells, although photoluminescent coupling is shown to be important for cells operating near their maximum power point voltage or below or when junction defect recombination is significant. Extension of earlier models i sproposed to allow this non-negligible component of luminescent coupling to be included. Therefined model is validated by measurement of the closely related external emission from both single and double junction cells.

The segmental approach has been considered to analyze dark and light I-V curves. The photovoltaic (PV) dependence of the open-circuit voltage (Voc), the maximum power point voltage (Vm), the efficiency (?) on the photogenerated current (Jg), or on the sunlight concentration ratio (X), are analyzed, as well as other photovoltaic characteristics of multijunction solar cells. The characteristics being analyzed are split into monoexponential (linear in the semilogarithmic scale) portions, each of which is characterized by a definite value of the ideality factor A and preexponential current J0. The monoexponentiality ensures advantages, since at many steps of the analysis, one can use the analytical dependences instead of numerical methods. In this work, an experimental procedure for obtaining the necessary parameters has been proposed, and an analysis of GaInP/GaInAs/Ge triple-junction solar cell characteristics has been carried out. It has been shown that up to the sunlight concentration ratios, at which the efficiency maximum is achieved, the results of calculation of dark and light I-V curves by the segmental method fit well with the experimental data. An important consequence of this work is the feasibility of acquiring the resistanceless dark and light I-V curves, which can be used for obtaining the I-V curves characterizing the losses in the transport part of a solar cell.

ABSTRACT This PhD thesis proposes a set of short-duration tests to establish quality control procedures to ensure that large photovoltaic plants fulfil the initial expectations. The motivation for this work is the lack of international standards specifically adapted to the present photovoltaic technology and its state of the art. From a strict technical point of view, these tests seek to obtain highly repetitive and representative results about the behaviour of the installation under study in a short period of time (typically one single week); and to minimize the global uncertainty. These are the two keys aspects required in quality control procedures. The proposed tests evaluate the general behaviour of the photovoltaic plants, in terms of energy production, as well as the particular behaviour of their main devices, photovoltaic arrays and inverters, in terms of maximum power and efficiency, respectively. A review of the installation quality and safety, and the employed materials in its execution to avoid premature aging is also recommended. The tests here presented are based on the experience accumulated by the “Grupo de Sistemas Fotovoltaicos del Instituto de Energia Solar de la Universidad Politecnica de Madrid”. This group has been involved in quality control procedures of about 50 photovoltaic plants, with an accumulated power close to 250 MW, most of them installed in Spain.

This paper presents an envelope amplifier solution for envelope elimination and restoration (EER), that consists of a series combination of a switch-mode power supply (SMPS), based on three-level voltage cells and a linear regulator. This cell topology offers several advantages over a previously presented envelope amplifier based on a different multilevel topology (two-level voltage cells). The topology of the multilevel converter affects to the whole design of the envelope amplifier and a comparison between both design alternatives regarding the size, complexity and the efficiency of the solution is done. Both envelope amplifier solutions have a bandwidth of 2 MHz with an instantaneous maximum power of 50 W. It is also analyzed the linearity of the three-level cell solution, with critical importance in the EER technique implementation. Additionally, considerations to optimize the design of the envelope amplifier and experimental comparison between both cell topologies are included.

An electrodynamic tether system for power generation at Jupiter is presented that allows extracting energy from Jupiter's corotating plasmasphere while leaving the system orbital energy unaltered to first order. The spacecraft is placed in a polar orbit with the tether spinning in the orbital plane so that the resulting Lorentz force, neglecting Jupiter's magnetic dipole tilt, is orthogonal to the instantaneous velocity vector and orbital radius, hence affecting orbital inclination rather than orbital energy. In addition, the electrodynamic tether subsystem, which consists of two radial tether arms deployed from the main central spacecraft, is designed in such a way as to extract maximum power while keeping the resulting Lorentz torque constantly null. The power-generation performance of the system and the effect on the orbit inclination is evaluated analytically for different orbital conditions and verified numerically. Finally, a thruster-based inclination-compensation maneuver at apoapsis is added, resulting in an efficient scheme to extract energy from the plasmasphere of the planet with minimum propellant consumption and no inclination change. A tradeoff analysis is conducted showing that, depending on tether size and orbit characteristics, the system performance can be considerably higher than conventional power-generation methods.

Short-term variability in the power generated by large grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) plants can negatively affect power quality and the network reliability. New grid-codes require combining the PV generator with some form of energy storage technology in order to reduce short-term PV power fluctuation. This paper proposes an effective method in order to calculate, for any PV plant size and maximum allowable ramp-rate, the maximum power and the minimum energy storage requirements alike. The general validity of this method is corroborated with extensive simulation exercises performed with real 5-s one year data of 500 kW inverters at the 38.5 MW Amaraleja (Portugal) PV plant and two other PV plants located in Navarra (Spain), at a distance of more than 660 km from Amaraleja.
