We present and validate a test able to provide reliable body sway measurements in air pistol shooting, without the use of a gun. 46 senior male pistol shooters who participated in Spanish air pistol championships participated in the study. Body sway data of two static bipodal balance tests have been compared: during the first test, shooting was simulated by use of a dumbbell, while during the second test the shooters own pistol was used. Both tests were performed the day previous to the competition, during the official training time and at the training stands to simulate competition conditions. The participants performance was determined as the total score of 60 shots at competition. Apart from the commonly used variables that refer to movements of the shooters centre of pressure (COP), such as COP displacements on the X and Y axes, maximum and average COP velocities and total COP area, the present analysis also included variables that provide information regarding the axes of the COP ellipse (length and angle in respect to X). A strong statistically significant correlation between the two tests was found (with an interclass correlation varying between 0.59 and 0.92). A statistically significant inverse linear correlation was also found between performance and COP movements. The study concludes that dumbbell tests are perfectly valid for measuring body sway by simulating pistol shooting.

In this research we have tried to study the effect of adding metallic fibres as a means of reinforcing high strength concrete, and especially its behaviour when impacted upon by projectiles. The study was carried out using high strength concrete (HSC), analysing its mechanical facets, durability and malleability when used in construction. The laboratory tests took place in the Laboratorio de Materiales de Construcción of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Caminos Canales y Puertos of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, and the ballistic tests were carried out in the covered shooting gallery of the Polígono de Experiencias in Carabanchel (Madrid), belongs to the Departamento de Infraestructura of the Ministerio de Defensa. The aspects of the HSC studied are its mechanical strength to compression, traction, flexotraction, resilience to flexo-traction, shear strength, creep, shrinkage, internal temperature and strength to the impact of projectiles, always looking to analyse the effect of adding fibres to HSC. The ballistic testing process required the construction of 47 concrete plates of different thicknesses, from 5 to 40 cm, 26 made which HSC containing of 80 kg/m3 metallic fibres of, 11 made of HSC without fibres, and 10 made with concrete of normal strength with and without fibres. These plates were subjected to a variety of impacts by four projectile, 7.62 AP, 12.70 M8, 20 mm APDS and 25 mm APDS. The results showed that HSC has a greater resistance to the impact of projectiles, although without the addition of fibres, its fragility makes it much less suitable for use as a protective barrier. The addition of fibres reduces considerably frontal fragmentation, known as “scabbing”, and to a lesser extent causes fragmentation of the reverse side, known as “spalling”. In addition, the concrete’s capacity to resist multiple impacts is improved by its letter ductility. A study was carried out on the various formulae and models used to design protective concrete barriers impacted on by projectiles, analysing their viability in the case of HSC for which they were not developed and for which no specific calculations exist.

The aim of the present study was to identify the importance of floorball tactical variables to predict ball possession effectiveness, when controlling quality of opposition and game periods. The sample was composed by 1500 ball possessions, corresponding to 14 games randomly selected from the International Championships played during 2008 and 2010 (World Championship, Four nations tournament and classificatory phases for World Championship) by teams from different competition levels (HIGH, INTERMEDIATE and LOW). The effects of the predictor variables on successful ball possessions according to the three game contexts (HIGH vs. HIGH; HIGH vs. LOW; LOW vs. LOW games) were analyzed using Binomial Logistic Regressions. The results showed no interaction with the game period. In HIGH vs. HIGH games, quality of opposition showed an association with ball possession effectiveness with ending zone, offensive system, possession duration, height of shooting and defensive pressures previous to the shot. In HIGH vs. LOW games the important factors were the starting zone, possession duration, defensive pressure previous to the last pass and to the shot, technique of shooting and the number players involved in each ball possession. Finally, in LOW vs. LOW games, the results emphasized the importance of starting and ending zones, the number of passes used and the technique of shooting. In conclusion, elite floorball performance is mainly affected by quality of opposition showing different game patterns in each context that should be considered by coaches when preparing practices and competitions.

One key issue in the simulation of bare electrodynamic tethers (EDTs) is the accurate and fast computation of the collected current, an ambient dependent operation necessary to determine the Lorentz force for each time step. This paper introduces a novel semianalytical solution that allows researchers to compute the current distribution along the tether efficient and effectively under orbital-motion-limited (OML) and beyond OML conditions, i.e., if tether radius is greater than a certain ambient dependent threshold. The method reduces the original boundary value problem to a couple of nonlinear equations. If certain dimensionless variables are used, the beyond OML effect just makes the tether characteristic length L ∗ larger and it is decoupled from the current determination problem. A validation of the results and a comparison of the performance in terms of the time consumed is provided, with respect to a previous ad hoc solution and a conventional shooting method.

The aim of the present study was to identify performance variability in basketball for players with intellectual impairment (II) and to compare it with able-bodied (AB) players. Official game statistics from the 13 games played in the Ankara World II-Basketball Championships (2013) were gathered and descriptive data, variability coefficient (VC), maximum scores and its Z-score were calculated from those players who participated at least 10 minutes per game (N = 46; guards = 10, forwards = 21, centers = 15). Results indicated higher performance variability and lower efficiency in shooting percentages and turnovers in II-players comparing with studies in ABplayers. Differences found between game positions indicated similar roles of guards, forwards and centers in II and AB-players. These findings are relevant to understand how II impact on basketball performance, which is a necessary step to develop specific eligibility systems in II-basketball according to the guidelines of the International Paralympic Committee.

ABSTRACT. The final minute of a close game in basketball is a critical moment which is subject to many factors that influence its development. Thus, the success rate in free-throws during that period will determine, in many cases, the outcome of the game. Decrease of performance (drop) in this facet of play under pressure conditions, may be related to studied own multiple sports context variables, such as the remaining seconds of possession, the situation in the score (to be winning, drawing, or losing) the location of the match (playing at home or away), the competition phase (regular season or playoffs) or team level (best/worst teams). In addition, the characteristics of the player are very important related to his age and years of experience to face the critical moments, as well as his playing position into team. In this sense, the combination of factors in context and player, allows interact about performance of shooter in the final moments of the game during his free-throw shooting. The aim of this present doctoral thesis was find the most related variables to player´s drop in free throws in the last minute of the game and the last row of free-throws in closed games of basketball. To achieve the objective of the study, 124 closed games (less or equal than 2 points difference) were analyzed in every copetition in ACB league (regular season, playoff and cup) from 2011-2012 to 2014-2015 seasons. To record the variables, the percentage of success of the shooter in regular season, full game, last minute, and last row were analyzed. This way, it is tried to analyze which player and context variables explain the free-throw performance in last minute and last row of the game. On the other hand, it is tried to determine the degree of association between decrease of performance (drop) of the player in the final moments, and studied player variables: playing position, age, and years of professional experience; while considered situational variables considered were: competition phase, location, classification, remaining time, and score-line. For data analysis were performed two statistical models: 1) A multiple linear regression model to determine the effect of the independent variables in the succsess percentage of shooter at the last minute, and in the last row of free-throws in the game; and 2) A binomial logistic regression analysis to analyze the relationship between the probability of a drop (lower performance) and the characteristics of the shooter and situational variables. The results of multiple linear regression model showed significant negative effects on the free-throw percentage during last minute, when shooters are centers (-19.45%). On the other hand, results in the last series showed the significant negative effect on the center position (-19.30%) and score-line (-3.33% for each point difference in the score) in the free-throw percentage. The independent variables age, professional experience, ranking in the regular season, competition phase, location, and remaining time, revealed no significant effects on linear regression models. The results of the binomial logistic regression showed that the variables professional experience between 13 and 18 years (OR = 4.63), playing forward (OR = 23.01) and playing guard (OR = 10.68) are related to reduce the probability to decrease the performance during the last minute of the game. While wining, increases it (OR = 0.06). Furthermore, the results of the last row showed a reduction in performance degradation when player is between 13 and 18 years of experience (OR = 4.28), and playing forward (OR = 8.06) or guard (OR = 6.34). By contrast, the variables related to the decrease in performance of the player are the knockout phases (OR = 0.22) and wining (OR = 0.04). The main results of the study showed that there is a decrease in performance of the player in the percentage of success in free-throws in the last minute and last row of the game, and it is significantly associated with age, professional experience, and player position. Finding relationship with the competition phase, during last row of free-throws of the game too. This information is a valuable information for the coach, for applying in real competitive environment. In this sense, create simulations in the section of practical applications allows to predict the success rate of free-throw of a player during the most pressing moments of the game, based on their performance profile. What can be used to take more appropriate decisions in order to achieve the best result. Similarly, guides the type of training process must be followed in relation to the most favorable players to drop, in order to minimize the effect of pressure on their ability to perform properly in the execution of the free-throws. And to achieve, in this way, a more consistent performance in all team players in this facet of the game, during the critical moment in the final of the game.

In the context of 3D reconstruction, we present a static multi-texturing system yielding a seamless texture atlas calculated by combining the colour information from several photos from the same subject covering most of its surface. These pictures can be provided by shooting just one camera several times when reconstructing a static object, or a set of synchronized cameras, when dealing with a human or any other moving object. We suppress the colour seams due to image misalignments and irregular lighting conditions that multi-texturing approaches typically suffer from, while minimizing the blurring effect introduced by colour blending techniques. Our system is robust enough to compensate for the almost inevitable inaccuracies of 3D meshes obtained with visual hull–based techniques: errors in silhouette segmentation, inherently bad handling of concavities, etc.

ABSTRACT The film work of French director Jacques Tati could be considered as the perfect reflection of the mid-20th century European post-war building paradigm, a period of time plenty of transformations perfectly echoed by cinema. In particular, Tati’s film work reflects the European post-war citizen’s concerns about the consequences of massive constructions built in their desvastated urban centres, as well as the development of functional cities proposed by the Athens Charter (1931). But, on top of that, an analysis of Jacques Tati’s cinematography allows for an approach to modernity from different perspectives, such as mobility, urban design, new buildings, working spaces in the new tertiary districts, housing -traditional, modern, and experimental-, or furniture design during the post-war period. Embodied by his alter-ego –Monsieur Hulot,- Tati curiously interacts with the new geometric constructions of neutral facades and questions the break with the French building tradition, highlighting the opposition between the nostalgic past and modernity of the 50s and 60s, affected by the fierce consumerism of the new welfare state. The functional, volumetric, aesthetic and even chromatic confrontation between both built worlds –traditional vs modern- invites the viewer to an exercise of meditation and criticism on the European modern architecture of that period. Tati’s film look is particularly focused on two basic concepts: on the one hand, his attention addresses Le Corbusier’s famous mechanistic house which is materialized in the ultra-modern Arpel house (Mon Oncle, 1958) and designed, in turn, when the development of other important experimental dwelling prototypes like Alison and Peter Smithson’s House of the Future or Jean Prouvé´s houses was taking place. It must be highlighted that Jacques Tati’s criticism was not addressed to modern architecture itself but to the wrong use that citizens could make of it. On the other hand, Tati focuses on the Miesian prism through the office buildings that shape the city of Tativille in Playtime (1967). It was a big, modern city built specifically for the film shooting, and based on the almost identical residential and tertiary urban fabrics already active in the main European and American capitals those years. Tativille would work as an autonomous city, having several facilities at its disposal and with the goal of getting integrated and consolidated into the Parisian urban weave. However, its final use was, unfortunately, quite different. In conclusion, an analysis of Jacques Tati’s film production allows for an approach to modern post-war architecture and urbanism, as well as to the socio-economic context that favoured its growth and expansion. As a result of this, Jacques Tati’s film production constitutes a suitable visual tool which, even nowadays, is consulted and shown due to its clarity and humour, and at the same time invites citizens –viewers- to participate in an architectural criticism exercise that, so far, had been reserved to architects.
