ABSTRACT Tailing's management of a mining exploitation is a key point in the economical development of the extractive activity and, especially, of the natural and social environment of the site. Precious metals mining has high hazardous embankment construction associated, product of its extractive process, i.e. gold cyanidation. A correct operation of those sites makes necessary to choose a suitable construction method, based on previous studies as geotechnical stability studies, geological context of the area, seismicity, hydrology, etc. At the same time, exhaustive control and monitoring must be carried out in order to assure the required safety conditions. Aurul's decantation pond failure in Baia Mare (Romania), on 30th January 2000, has been chosen as a stability analysis case-study.

Laser Welding (LW) is more often used in manufacturing due to its advantages, such as accurate control, good repeatability, less heat input, opportunities for joining of special materials, high speed, capability to join small dimension parts etc. LW is dedicated to robotized manufacturing, and the fabrication cells are using various level of flexibility, from specialized robots to very flexible setups. This paper features several LW applications using two industrially-scaled manufacturing cells at UPM Laser Centre (CLUPM) of Polytechnical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). The one dedicated to Remote Laser Welding (RLW) of thin sheets for automotive and other sectors uses a CO2 laser of 3500 W. The second has a high flexibility, is based on a 6-axis ABB robot and a Nd:YAG laser of 3300 W, and is meant for various laser processing methods, including welding. After a short description of each cell, several LW applications experimented at CLUPM and recently implemented in industry are briefly presented: RLW of automotive coated sheets, LW of high strength automotive sheets, LW vs. laser hybrid welding (LHW) of Double Phase steel thin sheets, and LHW of thin sheets of stainless steel and carbon steel (dissimilar joints). The main technological issues overcame and the critical process parameters are pointed out. Conclusions about achievements and trends are provided.

BioMet®Tools is a set of software applications developed for the biometrical characterization of voice in different fields as voice quality evaluation in laryngology, speech therapy and rehabilitation, education of the singing voice, forensic voice analysis in court, emotional detection in voice, secure access to facilities and services, etc. Initially it was conceived as plain research code to estimate the glottal source from voice and obtain the biomechanical parameters of the vocal folds from the spectral density of the estimate. This code grew to what is now the Glottex®Engine package (G®E). Further demands from users in medical and forensic fields instantiated the development of different Graphic User Interfaces (GUI’s) to encapsulate user interaction with the G®E. This required the personalized design of different GUI’s handling the same G®E. In this way development costs and time could be saved. The development model is described in detail leading to commercial production and distribution. Study cases from its application to the field of laryngology and speech therapy are given and discussed.

Distributed target tracking in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is an important problem, in which agreement on the target state can be achieved using conventional consensus methods, which take long to converge. We propose distributed particle filtering based on belief propagation (DPF-BP) consensus, a fast method for target tracking. According to our simulations, DPF-BP provides better performance than DPF based on standard belief consensus (DPF-SBC) in terms of disagreement in the network. However, in terms of root-mean square error, it can outperform DPF-SBC only for a specific number of consensus iterations.

This paper presents a high performance system of regulation and stabilization of luminous flux for public street lighting installations. Its purpose is to reduce the luminous flux of the luminaries efficiently by reducing their voltage supply, resulting in the improvement of energy efficiency in the installation. The system is basically composed of electromagnetic components which provide robustness and high-performance to the device, as well as minimum maintenance requirements. However, the voltage regulation is based on the application of voltage steps. Aging studies of the luminaries have been carried out to analyze the impact of this discrete voltage regulation. A specific prototype of this voltage and stabilizer regulator have been in operation in a real outdoor lighting installation for more than one year.

We consider the problem of developing efficient sampling schemes for multiband sparse signals. Previous results on multicoset sampling implementations that lead to universal sampling patterns (which guarantee perfect reconstruction), are based on a set of appropriate interleaved analog to digital converters, all of them operating at the same sampling frequency. In this paper we propose an alternative multirate synchronous implementation of multicoset codes, that is, all the analog to digital converters in the sampling scheme operate at different sampling frequencies, without need of introducing any delay. The interleaving is achieved through the usage of different rates, whose sum is significantly lower than the Nyquist rate of the multiband signal. To obtain universal patterns the sampling matrix is formulated and analyzed. Appropriate choices of the parameters, that is the block length and the sampling rates, are also proposed.

This work has studied the production of stable pyranoanthocyanin pigments during fermentation using S. pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Along the fermentation, anthocyanins were determined by HPLC-DAD/MS, acetaldehyde was measured using GC-FID and pyruvic acid was quantified by enzymatic tests. Results show that S. pombe strains produce higher amounts of pyruvic acid, and therefore also of vitisin A, than Saccharomyces controls.

In this work we have studied the combined effect of using cinnamyl esterases (CE) and HCDC+ yeast strains of S. cerevisiae to transform TE-HCAs into vinylphenols to condense them with grape anthocyanins forming VPAs. These VPAs improve the color stability of the wine and at the same time remove EP precursors of the wine.

The research is an exhaustive study of the microstructure and of the stress-strain curves of structural steel S460N at temperatures typical of a fire. It includes a fractographic study of the fracture suifaces of cylindrical specimens, tensile tested at different fire scenarios, explaining the relationship between the failure micromechanisms and temperature. The paper ends with the comparison between the experimentally found strain-stress curves with that one's proposed by the EUROCODE EC3, resulting that in the case of steel S460N these are on the side ofsafety.

The Schizosaccharomyces strains consumed less primary amino nitrogen and produced less urea and more pyruvic acid than other Saccharomyces species. Further, three of the four Schizosaccharomyces strains completed the breakdown of malic acid by day 4 of fermentation. The main negative effect of the use of Schizosaccharomyces was strong acetic acid production. The Schizosaccharomyces strains that produced most pyruvic acid (938 and 936) were associated with better ?wine? colour than the remaining yeasts. The studied Schizosaccharomyces could therefore be of oenological interest.

The paper presents some preliminary results of an ongoing research intended to qualify a highly resistant duplex stainless steel wire as prestressing steel and, gets on insight on (he wires' fracture micromechanism and residual stresses field. SEM fractographic analysis of the stainless steel wires indicates an anisotropic fracture behavior in tension, in presence of surface flaws, attributed to the residual stresses generated through the fabrication process. The residual stresses magnitude influences the damage tolerance, its knowledge being a key issue in designating/qualifying the wires as prestressing steels.

ABSTRACT One of the most interesting chapters of European Gothic is the sexpartite vault, without doubt one of the most remarkable vaults ever created within this style. The first Gothic vaults, with crossed ribs on a square base, were restricted to relatively small areas, but a new vault, with very particular characteristics emerged to address the need to cover spaces of considerable size; the sexpartite vault. This cross-ribbed vault is reinforced in the centre by an arch that runs parallel to the transverse arches, divides the vault in half and splits the wall arch in two, creating a pair of windows, one on each side. The simple groin vault surface, the source of ribbed vaults, was greatly complicated creating a highly complex volume with six sections of severies and with six supports of different sizes, four on the corners and two smaller central ones. The construction difficulties involved in building this type of vault may explain its premature abandonment and a return to the simple cross-ribbed vault, now in rectangular sections. However, despite its brief existence, the sexpartite vault was the great protagonist of the beginnings of Gothic architecture and important vaulting was built using this system from England to Romania. Studies undertaken in the 19th century helped the History of Construction as a discipline tremendously. Research was abandoned during the twentieth century however, and has only recently been taken up again. Towards the end of the 19th century, Viollet-le-Duc gave a brief description of this type of vault. Later, Auguste de Choisy also devoted some pages to the French sexpartite vault; since then, later studies have made very few references to it. Against this background, this research now attempts to bring to light the knowledge of geometry and construction that made the construction of the European sexpartite vault possible. To this end, the main vaults in Western Europe - France, Spain, England, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, have been studied. By making a comparative study we have been able to reveal the common construction features and those that are specific to each country, as well as some of the channels of communication that enabled this architecture to spread. New measuring technologies, the laser scanner, total station, photogrammetry, etc., have given rise to a revolution in heritage documentation and restoration, as well as facilitating a huge qualitative leap for the analysis of Gothic vaults, enabling studies of historical architecture that until now were inaccessible. A comprehensive survey was carried out to be able to analyse European sexpartite vaults. We could thus create an exploded view, which enabled us to obtain the form of each of the elements; tas-de-charges, voussoirs, keystones and severies. The data gathered provided previously unknown facts that enabled us to make an in-depth study of stereotomy and construction. Furthermore, the main sexpartite vaults still preserved in Europe have been identified and categorised. The studies undertaken allowed us to affirm that the sexpartite vault appeared in France in the second half of the twelfth century, being used in the main French cathedrals, such as Notre Dame de Paris, Bourges or Laon. At the beginning of the thirteenth century it fell into disuse in France and began to expand throughout the rest of Europe, where it was abandoned half a century later, disappearing from European Gothic for good. While the examples dating back to the 12th century display poorly developed solutions more characteristic of the Romanesque, the vaults built in the 13th century reveal enormously complex solutions, with large tas-de-charges and intelligent construction and geometric strategies that allowed auxiliary support structures to be simplified, and gave more freedom to design. These vaults reflect the beginnings of Gothic stereotomy and by studying them we have been able to learn more about the development and evolution of Early Gothic architecture in Europe.

This paper proposes an economic instrument designed to assess the competitive nature of the sugar industry in Romania. In the first part of the paper is presented the theoretical background underlying index (HHI) and its calculation methodology. Then comes the results of a first application of this index for a total of 10 plants in the sugar industry, the robustness of these results is discussed. We believe HHI is a proactive tool that may prove useful competition authority, in its pursuit of continuous monitoring of various industries in the economy and in the internal decision-making on resource allocation institution (Peacock, and Prisecaru, 2013).The starting point of our research is to free competition in the European market with competitors much stronger than Romanian plants, plants that produce at a price lower than the domestic ones. In our study we will see if it is a concentration of production in factories around the strongest in Romania, concentration accompanied by the collapse of those who could not resist the market. The market concentration, competition policy, we will follow using the HHI index, for evaluation of impact analysis on existing trade, the number and size of competitors, protecting existing sales structures, avoiding disruptions in the competitive environment, etc.
