1. The spatial distribution of individual plants within a population and the population’s genetic structure are determined by several factors, like dispersal, reproduction mode or biotic interactions. The role of interspecific interactions in shaping the spatial genetic structure of plant populations remains largely unknown. 2. Species with a common evolutionary history are known to interact more closely with each other than unrelated species due to the greater number of traits they share. We hypothesize that plant interactions may shape the fine genetic structure of closely related congeners. 3. We used spatial statistics (georeferenced design) and molecular techniques (ISSR markers) to understand how two closely related congeners, Thymus vulgaris (widespread species) and T. loscosii (narrow endemic) interact at the local scale. Specific cover, number of individuals of both study species and several community attributes were measured in a 10 × 10 m plot. 4. Both species showed similar levels of genetic variation, but differed in their spatial genetic structure. Thymus vulgaris showed spatial aggregation but no spatial genetic structure, while T. loscosii showed spatial genetic structure (positive genetic autocorrelation) at short distances. The spatial pattern of T. vulgaris’ cover showed significant dissociation with that of T. loscosii. The same was true between the spatial patterns of the cover of T. vulgaris and the abundance of T. loscosii and between the abundance of each species. Most importantly, we found a correlation between the genetic structure of T. loscosii and the abundance of T. vulgaris: T. loscosii plants were genetically more similar when they were surrounded by a similar number of T. vulgaris plants. 5. Synthesis. Our results reveal spatially complex genetic structures of both congeners at small spatial scales. The negative association among the spatial patterns of the two species and the genetic structure found for T. loscosii in relation to the abundance of T. vulgaris indicate that competition between the two species may account for the presence of adapted ecotypes of T. loscosii to the abundance of a competing congeneric species. This suggests that the presence and abundance of close congeners can influence the genetic spatial structure of plant species at fine scales.

Typical streak computations present in the literature correspond to linear streaks or to small amplitude nonlinear streaks computed using DNS or nonlinear PSE. We use the Reduced Navier-Stokes (RNS) equations to compute the streamwise evolution of fully non-linear streaks with high amplitude in a laminar flat plate boundary layer. The RNS formulation provides Reynolds number independent solutions that are asymptotically exact in the limit $Re \gg 1$, it requires much less computational effort than DNS, and it does not have the consistency and convergence problems of the PSE. We present various streak computations to show that the flow configuration changes substantially when the amplitude of the streaks grows and the nonlinear effects come into play. The transversal motion (in the wall normal-streamwise plane) becomes more important and strongly distorts the streamwise velocity profiles, that end up being quite different from those of the linear case. We analyze in detail the resulting flow patterns for the nonlinearly saturated streaks and compare them with available experimental results.

The objectives of this study were to assess diversity and genetic structure of a collection of Spanish durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L) landraces, using SSRs, DArTs and gliadin-markers, and to correlate the distribution of diversity with geographic and climatic features, as well as agro-morphological traits. A high level of diversity was detected in the genotypes analyzed, which were separated into nine populations with a moderate to great genetic divergence among them. The three subspecies taxa, dicoccon, turgidum and durum, present in the collection, largely determined the clustering of the populations. Genotype variation was lower in dicoccon (one major population) and turgidum (two major populations) than in durum (five major populations). Genetic differentiation by the agro-ecological zone of origin was greater in dicoccon and turgidum than in durum. DArT markers revealed two geographic substructures, east-west for dicoccon and northeast-southwest for turgidum. The ssp. durum had a more complex structure, consisting of seven populations with high intra-population variation. DArT markers allowed the detection of subgroups within some populations, with agro-morphological and gliadin differences, and distinct agro-ecological zones of origin. Two different phylogenetic groups were detected; revealing that some durum populations were more related to ssp. turgidum from northern Spain, while others seem to be more related to durum wheats from North Africa

The origin of the modified optical properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QD) capped with a thin GaAs1−xSbx layer is analyzed in terms of the band structure. To do so, the size, shape, and composition of the QDs and capping layer are determined through cross-sectional scanning tunnelling microscopy and used as input parameters in an 8 × 8 k·p model. As the Sb content is increased, there are two competing effects determining carrier confinement and the oscillator strength: the increased QD height and reduced strain on one side and the reduced QD-capping layer valence band offset on the other. Nevertheless, the observed evolution of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity with Sb cannot be explained in terms of the oscillator strength between ground states, which decreases dramatically for Sb > 16%, where the band alignment becomes type II with the hole wavefunction localized outside the QD in the capping layer. Contrary to this behaviour, the PL intensity in the type II QDs is similar (at 15 K) or even larger (at room temperature) than in the type I Sb-free reference QDs. This indicates that the PL efficiency is dominated by carrier dynamics, which is altered by the presence of the GaAsSb capping layer. In particular, the presence of Sb leads to an enhanced PL thermal stability. From the comparison between the activation energies for thermal quenching of the PL and the modelled band structure, the main carrier escape mechanisms are suggested. In standard GaAs-capped QDs, escape of both electrons and holes to the GaAs barrier is the main PL quenching mechanism. For small-moderate Sb (<16%) for which the type I band alignment is kept, electrons escape to the GaAs barrier and holes escape to the GaAsSb capping layer, where redistribution and retraping processes can take place. For Sb contents above 16% (type-II region), holes remain in the GaAsSb layer and the escape of electrons from the QD to the GaAs barrier is most likely the dominant PL quenching mechanism. This means that electrons and holes behave dynamically as uncorrelated pairs in both the type-I and type-II structures.

Neutron diffraction data of DyCrO4 oxide, prepared at 4 GPa and 833 K from the ambient pressure zircon-type, reveal that crystallize with the scheelite-type structure, space group I41/a. Accompanying this structural phase transition induced by pressure the magnetic properties change dramatically from ferromagnetism in the case of zircon to antiferromagnetism for the scheelite polymorph with a T N= 19 K. The analysis of the neutron diffraction data obtained at 1.2 K has been used to determine the magnetic structure of this DyCrO4-scheelite oxide which can be described with a k = [0, 0, 0] as propagation vector, where the Dy and Cr moments are lying in the ab-plane of the scheelite structure. The ordered magnetic moments are 10 µB and 1 µB for Dy+3 and Cr+5 respectively

El geoide, definido como la superficie equipotencial que mejor se ajusta (en el sentido de los mínimos cuadrados) al nivel medio del mar en una determinada época, es la superficie que utilizamos como referencia para determinar las altitudes ortométricas. Si disponemos de una superficie equipotencial de referencia como dátum altimétrico preciso o geoide local, podemos entonces determinar las altitudes ortométricas de forma eficiente a partir de las altitudes elipsoidales proporcionadas por el Sistema Global de Navegación por Satélite (Global Navigation Satellite System, GNSS ). Como es sabido uno de los problemas no resueltos de la geodesia (quizás el más importante de los mismos en la actualidad) es la carencia de un dátum altimétrico global (Sjoberg, 2011) con las precisiones adecuadas. Al no existir un dátum altimétrico global que nos permita obtener los valores absolutos de la ondulación del geoide con la precisión requerida, es necesario emplear modelos geopotenciales como alternativa. Recientemente fue publicado el modelo EGM2008 en el que ha habido una notable mejoría de sus tres fuentes de datos, por lo que este modelo contiene coeficientes adicionales hasta el grado 2190 y orden 2159 y supone una sustancial mejora en la precisión (Pavlis et al., 2008). Cuando en una región determinada se dispone de valores de gravedad y Modelos Digitales del Terreno (MDT) de calidad, es posible obtener modelos de superficies geopotenciales más precisos y de mayor resolución que los modelos globales. Si bien es cierto que el Servicio Nacional Geodésico de los Estados Unidos de América (National Geodetic Survey, NGS) ha estado desarrollando modelos del geoide para la región de los Estados Unidos de América continentales y todos sus territorios desde la década de los noventa, también es cierto que las zonas de Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses han quedado un poco rezagadas al momento de poder aplicar y obtener resultados de mayor precisión con estos modelos regionales del geoide. En la actualidad, el modelo geopotencial regional vigente para la zona de Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses es el GEOID12A (Roman y Weston, 2012). Dada la necesidad y ante la incertidumbre de saber cuál sería el comportamiento de un modelo del geoide desarrollado única y exclusivamente con datos de gravedad locales, nos hemos dado a la tarea de desarrollar un modelo de geoide gravimétrico como sistema de referencia para las altitudes ortométricas. Para desarrollar un modelo del geoide gravimétrico en la isla de Puerto Rico, fue necesario implementar una metodología que nos permitiera analizar y validar los datos de gravedad terrestre existentes. Utilizando validación por altimetría con sistemas de información geográfica y validación matemática por colocación con el programa Gravsoft (Tscherning et al., 1994) en su modalidad en Python (Nielsen et al., 2012), fue posible validar 1673 datos de anomalías aire libre de un total de 1894 observaciones obtenidas de la base de datos del Bureau Gravimétrico Internacional (BGI). El aplicar estas metodologías nos permitió obtener una base de datos anomalías de la gravedad fiable la cual puede ser utilizada para una gran cantidad de aplicaciones en ciencia e ingeniería. Ante la poca densidad de datos de gravedad existentes, fue necesario emplear un método alternativo para densificar los valores de anomalías aire libre existentes. Empleando una metodología propuesta por Jekeli et al. (2009b) se procedió a determinar anomalías aire libre a partir de los datos de un MDT. Estas anomalías fueron ajustadas utilizando las anomalías aire libre validadas y tras aplicar un ajuste de mínimos cuadrados por zonas geográficas, fue posible obtener una malla de datos de anomalías aire libre uniforme a partir de un MDT. Tras realizar las correcciones topográficas, determinar el efecto indirecto de la topografía del terreno y la contribución del modelo geopotencial EGM2008, se obtuvo una malla de anomalías residuales. Estas anomalías residuales fueron utilizadas para determinar el geoide gravimétrico utilizando varias técnicas entre las que se encuentran la aproximación plana de la función de Stokes y las modificaciones al núcleo de Stokes, propuestas por Wong y Gore (1969), Vanicek y Kleusberg (1987) y Featherstone et al. (1998). Ya determinados los distintos modelos del geoide gravimétrico, fue necesario validar los mismos y para eso se utilizaron una serie de estaciones permanentes de la red de nivelación del Datum Vertical de Puerto Rico de 2002 (Puerto Rico Vertical Datum 2002, PRVD02 ), las cuales tenían publicados sus valores de altitud elipsoidal y elevación. Ante la ausencia de altitudes ortométricas en las estaciones permanentes de la red de nivelación, se utilizaron las elevaciones obtenidas a partir de nivelación de primer orden para determinar los valores de la ondulación del geoide geométrico (Roman et al., 2013). Tras establecer un total de 990 líneas base, se realizaron dos análisis para determinar la 'precisión' de los modelos del geoide. En el primer análisis, que consistió en analizar las diferencias entre los incrementos de la ondulación del geoide geométrico y los incrementos de la ondulación del geoide de los distintos modelos (modelos gravimétricos, EGM2008 y GEOID12A) en función de las distancias entre las estaciones de validación, se encontró que el modelo con la modificación del núcleo de Stokes propuesta por Wong y Gore presentó la mejor 'precisión' en un 91,1% de los tramos analizados. En un segundo análisis, en el que se consideraron las 990 líneas base, se determinaron las diferencias entre los incrementos de la ondulación del geoide geométrico y los incrementos de la ondulación del geoide de los distintos modelos (modelos gravimétricos, EGM2008 y GEOID12A), encontrando que el modelo que presenta la mayor 'precisión' también era el geoide con la modificación del núcleo de Stokes propuesta por Wong y Gore. En este análisis, el modelo del geoide gravimétrico de Wong y Gore presento una 'precisión' de 0,027 metros en comparación con la 'precisión' del modelo EGM2008 que fue de 0,031 metros mientras que la 'precisión' del modelo regional GEOID12A fue de 0,057 metros. Finalmente podemos decir que la metodología aquí presentada es una adecuada ya que fue posible obtener un modelo del geoide gravimétrico que presenta una mayor 'precisión' que los modelos geopotenciales disponibles, incluso superando la precisión del modelo geopotencial global EGM2008. ABSTRACT The geoid, defined as the equipotential surface that best fits (in the least squares sense) to the mean sea level at a particular time, is the surface used as a reference to determine the orthometric heights. If we have an equipotential reference surface or a precise local geoid, we can then determine the orthometric heights efficiently from the ellipsoidal heights, provided by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). One of the most common and important an unsolved problem in geodesy is the lack of a global altimetric datum (Sjoberg, 2011)) with the appropriate precision. In the absence of one which allows us to obtain the absolute values of the geoid undulation with the required precision, it is necessary to use alternative geopotential models. The EGM2008 was recently published, in which there has been a marked improvement of its three data sources, so this model contains additional coefficients of degree up to 2190 and order 2159, and there is a substantial improvement in accuracy (Pavlis et al., 2008). When a given region has gravity values and high quality digital terrain models (DTM), it is possible to obtain more accurate regional geopotential models, with a higher resolution and precision, than global geopotential models. It is true that the National Geodetic Survey of the United States of America (NGS) has been developing geoid models for the region of the continental United States of America and its territories from the nineties, but which is also true is that areas such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have lagged behind when to apply and get more accurate results with these regional geopotential models. Right now, the available geopotential model for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands is the GEOID12A (Roman y Weston, 2012). Given this need and given the uncertainty of knowing the behavior of a regional geoid model developed exclusively with data from local gravity, we have taken on the task of developing a gravimetric geoid model to use as a reference system for orthometric heights. To develop a gravimetric geoid model in the island of Puerto Rico, implementing a methodology that allows us to analyze and validate the existing terrestrial gravity data is a must. Using altimetry validation with GIS and mathematical validation by collocation with the Gravsoft suite programs (Tscherning et al., 1994) in its Python version (Nielsen et al., 2012), it was possible to validate 1673 observations with gravity anomalies values out of a total of 1894 observations obtained from the International Bureau Gravimetric (BGI ) database. Applying these methodologies allowed us to obtain a database of reliable gravity anomalies, which can be used for many applications in science and engineering. Given the low density of existing gravity data, it was necessary to employ an alternative method for densifying the existing gravity anomalies set. Employing the methodology proposed by Jekeli et al. (2009b) we proceeded to determine gravity anomaly data from a DTM. These anomalies were adjusted by using the validated free-air gravity anomalies and, after that, applying the best fit in the least-square sense by geographical area, it was possible to obtain a uniform grid of free-air anomalies obtained from a DTM. After applying the topographic corrections, determining the indirect effect of topography and the contribution of the global geopotential model EGM2008, a grid of residual anomalies was obtained. These residual anomalies were used to determine the gravimetric geoid by using various techniques, among which are the planar approximation of the Stokes function and the modifications of the Stokes kernel, proposed by Wong y Gore (1969), Vanicek y Kleusberg (1987) and Featherstone et al. (1998). After determining the different gravimetric geoid models, it was necessary to validate them by using a series of stations of the Puerto Rico Vertical Datum of 2002 (PRVD02) leveling network. These stations had published its values of ellipsoidal height and elevation, and in the absence of orthometric heights, we use the elevations obtained from first - order leveling to determine the geometric geoid undulation (Roman et al., 2013). After determine a total of 990 baselines, two analyzes were performed to determine the ' accuracy ' of the geoid models. The first analysis was to analyze the differences between the increments of the geometric geoid undulation with the increments of the geoid undulation of the different geoid models (gravimetric models, EGM2008 and GEOID12A) in function of the distance between the validation stations. Through this analysis, it was determined that the model with the modified Stokes kernel given by Wong and Gore had the best 'accuracy' in 91,1% for the analyzed baselines. In the second analysis, in which we considered the 990 baselines, we analyze the differences between the increments of the geometric geoid undulation with the increments of the geoid undulation of the different geoid models (gravimetric models, EGM2008 and GEOID12A) finding that the model with the highest 'accuracy' was also the model with modifying Stokes kernel given by Wong and Gore. In this analysis, the Wong and Gore gravimetric geoid model presented an 'accuracy' of 0,027 meters in comparison with the 'accuracy' of global geopotential model EGM2008, which gave us an 'accuracy' of 0,031 meters, while the 'accuracy ' of the GEOID12A regional model was 0,057 meters. Finally we can say that the methodology presented here is adequate as it was possible to obtain a gravimetric geoid model that has a greater 'accuracy' than the geopotential models available, even surpassing the accuracy of global geopotential model EGM2008.

A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) provides the information basis used for many geographic applications such as topographic and geomorphologic studies, landscape through GIS (Geographic Information Systems) among others. The DEM capacity to represent Earth?s surface depends on the surface roughness and the resolution used. Each DEM pixel depends on the scale used characterized by two variables: resolution and extension of the area studied. DEMs can vary in resolution and accuracy by the production method, although there are statistical characteristics that keep constant or very similar in a wide range of scales. Based on this property, several techniques have been applied to characterize DEM through multiscale analysis directly related to fractal geometry: multifractal spectrum and the structure function. The comparison of the results by both methods is discussed. The study area is represented by a 1024 x 1024 data matrix obtained from a DEM with a resolution of 10 x 10 m each point, which correspond with a region known as ?Monte de El Pardo? a property of Spanish National Heritage (Patrimonio Nacional Español) of 15820 Ha located to a short distance from the center of Madrid. Manzanares River goes through this area from North to South. In the southern area a reservoir is found with a capacity of 43 hm3, with an altitude of 603.3 m till 632 m when it is at the highest capacity. In the middle of the reservoir the minimum altitude of this area is achieved.

The author participated in the 6 th EU Framework Project ―Q-pork Chains (FP6-036245-2)‖ from 2007 to 2009. With understanding of work reports from China and other countries, it is found that compared with other countries, China has great problems in pork quality and safety. By comparing the pork chain management between China and Spain, It is found that the difference in governance structure is one of the main differences in pork chain management between Spain and China. In China, spot-market relationship still dominates governance structure of pork chain, especially between the numerous house-hold pig holders and the great number of small slaughters. While in Spain, chain agents commonly apply cooperatives or integrations to cooperate. It also has been proven by recent studies, that in quality management at the chain level that supply chain integration has a direct effect on quality management practices (Han, 2010). Therefore, the author started to investigate the governance structure choices in supply chain management. And it has been set as the first research objective, which is to explain the governance structure choices process and the influencing factors in supply chain management, analyzing the pork chains cases in Spain and in China. During the further investigation, the author noticed the international trade of pork between Spain and China is not smooth since the signature of bi-lateral agreement on pork trade in 2007. Thus, another objective of the research is to find and solve the problems exist in the international pork chain between Spain and China. For the first objective, to explain the governance structure choices in supply chain management, the thesis conducts research in three main sections. 10 First of all, the thesis gives a literature overview in chapter two on Supply Chain Management (SCM), agri-food chain management and pork chain management. It concludes that SCM is a systems approach to view the supply chains as a whole, and to manage the total flow of goods inventory from the supplier to the ultimate customer. It includes the bi-directional flow of products (materials and services) and information, and the associated managerial and operational activities. And it also is a customer focus to create unique and individual source of customer value with an appropriate use of resources, leading to customer satisfaction and building competitive chain advantages. Agri-food chain management and pork chain management are applications of SCM in agri-food sector and pork sector respectively. Then, the research gives a comparative study in chapter three in the pork chain and pork chain management between Spain and China. Many differences are found, while the main difference is governance structure in pork chain management. Furthermore, the author gives an empirical study on governance structure choice in chapter five. It is concluded that governance structure of supply chain consists of a collection of rules/institutions/constraints structuring the transactions between the various stakeholders. Based on the overview on literatures closely related with governance structure, such as transaction cost economics, transaction value analysis and resource-based view theories, seven hypotheses are proposed, which are: Hypothesis 1: Transaction cost has positive relationship with governance structure choice Hypothesis 2: Uncertainty has positive relationship with transaction cost; higher uncertainty exerts high transaction cost Hypothesis 3: The relationship between asset specificity and transaction cost is positive Hypothesis 4: Collaboration advantages and governance structure choice have positive relationship11 Hypothesis 5: Willingness to collaborate has positive relationship with collaboration advantages Hypothesis 6: Capability to collaborate has positive relationship with collaboration advantages Hypothesis 7: Uncertainty has negative effect on collaboration advantages It is noted that as transaction cost value is negative, the transaction cost mentioned in the hypotheses is its absolute value. To test the seven hypotheses, Structural Equation Model (SEM) is applied and data collected from 350 pork slaughtering and processing companies in Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan Provinces in China is used. Based on the empirical SEM model and its results, the seven hypotheses are proved. The author generates several conclusions accordingly. It is found that the governance structure choice of the chain not only depends on transaction cost, it also depends on collaboration advantages. Exchange partners establish more stable and more intense relationship to reduce transaction cost and to maximize collaboration advantages. ―Collaboration advantages‖ in this thesis is defined as the joint value achieved through transaction (mutual activities) of agents in supply chains. This value forms as improvements, mainly in mutual logistics systems, cash response, information exchange, technological improvements and innovative improvements and quality management improvements, etc. Governance structure choice is jointly decided by transaction cost and collaboration advantages. Chain agents take different governance structures to coordinate in order to decrease their transaction cost and to increase their collaboration advantages. In China´s pork chain case, spot market relationship dominates the governance structure among the numerous backyard pig farmer and small family slaughterhouse 12 as they are connected by acquaintance relationship and the transaction cost in turn is low. Their relationship is reliable as they know each other in the neighborhood; as a result, spot market relationship is suitable for their exchange. However, the transaction between large-scale slaughtering and processing industries and small-scale pig producers is becoming difficult. The information hold back behavior and hold-up behavior of small-scale pig producers increase transaction cost between them and large-scale slaughtering and processing industries. Thus, through the more intense and stable relationship between processing industries and pig producers, processing industries reduce the transaction cost and improve the collaboration advantages with their chain partners, in which quality and safety collaboration advantages be increased, meaning that processing industries are able to provide consumers products with better quality and higher safety. It is also drawn that transaction cost is influenced mainly by uncertainty and asset specificity, which is in line with new institutional economics theories developed by Williamson O. E. In China´s pork chain case, behavioral uncertainty is created by the hold-up behaviors of great numbers of small pig producers, while big slaughtering and processing industries having strong asset specificity. On the other hand, ―collaboration advantages‖ is influenced by chain agents´ willingness to collaborate and chain agents´ capabilities to cooperate. With the fast growth of big scale slaughtering and processing industries, they are more willing to know and make effort to cooperate with their chain members, and they are more capable to create joint value together with other chain agents. Therefore, they are now the main chain agents who drive more intense and stable governance structure in China‘s pork chain. For the other objective, to find and solve the problems in the international pork chain between Spain and China, the research gives an analysis in chapter four on the 13 international pork chain. This study gives explanations why the international trade of pork between Spain and China is not sufficient from the chain perspective. It is found that the first obstacle is the high quality and safety requirement set by Chinese government. It makes the Spanish companies difficult to get authorities to export. Other aspects, such as Spanish pork is not competitive in price compared with other countries such as Denmark, United States, Canada, etc., Chinese consumers do not have sufficient information on Spanish pork products, are also important reasons that Spain does not export great quantity of pork products to China. It is concluded that China´s government has too much concern on the quality and safety requirements to Spanish pork products, which makes trade difficult to complete. The two countries need to establish a more stable and intense trade relationship. They also should make the information exchange sufficient and efficient and try to break trade barriers. A nonlinear analysis of an elastic tube subjected to gravity forces and buoyancy pressure is carried out. An update lagrangian formulation is used. The structural analysis efficiency in terms of computer time and accuracy, has been improved when load stiffness matrices have been introduced. In this way the follower forces characteristics such as their intensity and direction changes can be well represented. A sensitivity study of different involved variables on the final deformed pipeline shape is carried out.

The problem of earth thrust for a massive building in a seismic environment is analysed. Intertial and kinematic soil-structure interactions are considered by modelling the soil and the structure together. The problem is solved in the frequency domain by using the computer code FLUSH. Results show that the horizontal component of the seismic earth thrust is much greater than that obtained when applying the Mononobe-Okabe theory. This study establishes a set of conclusicns and recommendations for both design and practical purposes, and proposes future lines of investigation.

El gran desarrollo experimentado por la alta velocidad en los principales países de la Unión Europea, en los últimos 30 años, hace que este campo haya sido y aún sea uno de los principales referentes en lo que a investigación se refiere. Por otra parte, la aparición del concepto super − alta velocidad hace que la investigación en el campo de la ingeniería ferroviaria siga adquiriendo importancia en los principales centros de investigación de los países en los que se desea implantar este modo de transporte, o en los que habiendo sido ya implantado, se pretenda mejorar. Las premisas de eficacia, eficiencia, seguridad y confort, que este medio de transporte tiene como razón de ser pueden verse comprometidas por diversos factores. Las zonas de transición, definidas en la ingeniería ferroviaria como aquellas secciones en las que se produce un cambio en las condiciones de soporte de la vía, pueden afectar al normal comportamiento para el que fue diseñada la infraestructura, comprometiendo seriamente los estándares de eficiencia en el tiempo de viaje, confort de los pasajeros y aumentando considerablemente los costes de mantenimiento de la vía, si no se toman las medidas oportunas. En esta tesis se realiza un estudio detallado de la zonas de transición, concretamente de aquellas en las que existe una cambio en la rigidez vertical de la vía debido a la presencia de un marco hidráulico. Para realizar dicho estudio se lleva a cabo un análisis numérico de interacción entre el vehículo y la estructura, con un modelo bidimensional de elemento finitos, calibrado experimentalmente, en estado de tensión plana. En este análisis se tiene en cuenta el efecto de las irregularidades de la vía y el comportamiento mecánico de la interfaz suelo-estructura, con el objetivo de reproducir de la forma más real posible el efecto de interacción entre el vehículo, la vía y la estructura. Otros efectos como la influencia de la velocidad del tren y los asientos diferenciales, debidos a deformaciones por consolidación de los terraplenes a ambos lados el marco hidráulico, son también analizados en este trabajo. En esta tesis, los cálculos de interacción se han llevado a cabo en dos fases diferentes. En la primera, se ha considerado una interacción sencilla debida al paso de un bogie de un tren Eurostar. Los cálculos derivados de esta fase se han denominado cálculos a corto plazo. En la segunda, se ha realizado un análisis considerando múltiples pasos de bogie del tren Eurostar, conformando un análisis de degradación en el que se tiene en cuenta, en cada ciclo, la deformación de la capa de balasto. Los cálculos derivados de esta fase, son denominados en el texto como cálculos a largo plazo. Los resultados analizados muestran que la utilización de los denominados elementos de contacto es fundamental cuando se desea estudiar la influencia de asientos diferenciales, especialmente en transiciones terraplén-estructura en las que la cuña de cimentación no llega hasta la base de cimentación de la estructura. Por otra parte, tener en cuenta los asientos del terraplén, es sumamente importante, cuando se desea realizar un análisis de degradación de la vía ya que su influencia en la interacción entre el vehículo y la vía es muy elevada, especialmente para valores altos de velocidad del tren. En cuanto a la influencia de las irregularidades de la vía, en los cálculos efectuados, se revela que su importancia es muy notable, siendo su influencia muy destacada cuanto mayor sea la velocidad del tren. En este punto cabe destacar la diferencia de resultados derivada de la consideración de perfiles de irregularidades de distinta naturaleza. Los resultados provenientes de considerar perfiles artificiales son en general muy elevados, siendo estos más apropiados para realizar estudios de otra índole, como por ejemplo de seguridad al descarrilamiento. Los resultados provenientes de perfiles reales, dados por diferentes Administradores ferroviarios, presentan resultados menos elevados y más propios del problema analizar. Su influencia en la interacción dinámica entre el vehículo y la vía es muy importante, especialmente para velocidades elevadas del tren. Además el fenómeno de degradación conocido como danza de traviesas, asociado a zonas de transición, es muy susceptible a la consideración de irregularidades de la vía, tal y como se desprende de los cálculos efectuados a largo plazo. The major development experienced by high speed in the main countries of the European Union, in the last 30 years, makes railway research one of the main references in the research field. It should also be mentioned that the emergence of the concept superhigh − speed makes research in the field of Railway Engineering continues to gain importance in major research centers in the countries in which this mode of transportation is already implemented or planned to be implemented. The characteristics that this transport has as rationale such as: effectiveness, efficiency, safety and comfort, may be compromised by several factors. The transition zones are defined in railway engineering as a region in which there is an abrupt change of track stiffness. This stiffness variation can affect the normal behavior for which the infrastructure has been designed, seriously compromising efficiency standards in the travel time, passenger comfort and significantly increasing the costs of track maintenance, if appropriate measures are not taken. In this thesis a detailed study of the transition zones has been performed, particularly of those in which there is a change in vertical stiffness of the track due to the presence of a reinforced concrete culvert. To perform such a study a numerical interaction analysis between the vehicle, the track and the structure has been developed. With this purpose a two-dimensional finite element model, experimentally calibrated, in a state of plane stress, has been used. The implemented numerical models have considered the effects of track irregularities and mechanical behavior of soil-structure interface, with the objective of reproducing as accurately as possible the dynamic interaction between the vehicle the track and the structure. Other effects such as the influence of train speed and differential settlement, due to secondary consolidation of the embankments on both sides of culvert, have also been analyzed. In this work, the interaction analysis has been carried out in two different phases. In the first part a simple interaction due to the passage of a bogie of a Eurostar train has been considered. Calculations derived from this phase have been named short-term analysis. In the second part, a multi-load assessment considering an Eurostar train bogie moving along the transition zone, has been performed. The objective here is to simulate a degradation process in which vertical deformation of the ballast layer was considered. Calculations derived from this phase have been named long-term analysis. The analyzed results show that the use of so-called contact elements is essential when one wants to analyze the influence of differential settlements, especially in embankment-structure transitions in which the wedge-shaped backfill does not reach the foundation base of the structure. Moreover, considering embankment settlement is extremely important when it is desired to perform an analysis of track degradation. In these cases the influence on the interaction behaviour between the vehicle and the track is very high, especially for higher values of speed train. Regarding the influence of the track irregularities, this study has proven that the track’s dynamic response is heavily influenced by the irregularity profile and that this influence is more important for higher train velocities. It should also be noted that the difference in results derived from consideration of irregularities profiles of different nature. The results coming from artificial profiles are generally very high, these might be more appropriate in order to study other effects, such as derailment safety. Results from real profiles, given by the monitoring works of different rail Managers, are softer and they fit better to the context of this thesis. The influence of irregularity profiles on the dynamic interaction between the train and the track is very important, especially for high-speeds of the train. Furthermore, the degradation phenomenon known as hanging sleepers, associated with transition zones, is very susceptible to the consideration of track irregularities, as it can be concluded from the long-term analysis.

A Space tether is a thin, multi-kilometers long conductive wire, joining a satellite and some opposite end mass, and keeping vertical in orbit by the gravity-gradient. The ambient plasma, being highly conductive, is equipotential in its own co-moving frame. In the tether frame, in relative motion however, there is in the plasma a motional electric field of order of 100 V/km, product of (near) orbital velocity and geomagnetic field. The electromotive force established over the tether length allows plasma contactor devices to collect electrons at one polarized-positive (anodic) end and eject electrons at the opposite end, setting up a current along a standard, fully insulated tether. The Lorentz force exerted on the current by the geomagnetic field itself is always drag; this relies on just thermodynamics, like air drag. The bare tether concept, introduced in 1992 at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), takes away the insulation and has electrons collected over the tether segment coming out polarized positive; the concept rests on 2D (Langmuir probe) current-collection in plasmas being greatly more efficient than 3D collection. A Plasma Contactor ejects electrons at the cathodic end. A bare tether with a thin-tape cross section has much greater perimeter and de-orbits much faster than a (corresponding) round bare tether of equal length and mass. Further, tethers being long and thin, they are prone to cuts by abundant small space debris, but BETs has shown that the tape has a probability of being cut per unit time smaller by more than one order of magnitude than the corresponding round tether (debris comparable to its width are much less abundant than debris comparable to the radius of the corresponding round tether). Also, the tape collects much more current, and de-orbits much faster, than a corresponding multi-line “tape” made of thin round wires cross-connected to survive debris cuts. Tethers use a dissipative mechanism quite different from air drag and can de-orbit in just a few months; also, tape tethers are much lighter than round tethers of equal length and perimeter, which can capture equal current. The 3 disparate tape dimensions allow easily scalable design. Switching the cathodic Contactor off-on allows maneuvering to avoid catastrophic collisions with big tracked debris. Lorentz braking is as reliable as air drag. Tethers are still reasonably effective at high inclinations, where the motional field is small, because the geomagnetic field is not just a dipole along the Earth polar axis. BETs is the EC FP7/Space Project 262972, financed in about 1.8 million euros, from 1 November 2010 to 31 January 2014, and carrying out RTD work on de-orbiting space debris. Coordinated by UPM, it has partners Università di Padova, ONERA-Toulouse, Colorado State University, SME Emxys, DLR–Bremen, and Fundación Tecnalia. BETs work involves 1) Designing, building, and ground-testing basic hardware subsystems Cathodic Plasma Contactor, Tether Deployment Mechanism, Power Control Module, and Tape with crosswise and lengthwise structure. 2) Testing current collection and verifying tether dynamical stability. 3) Preliminary design of tape dimensions for a generic mission, conducive to low system-to-satellite mass ratio and probability of cut by small debris, and ohmic-effects regime of tether current for fast de-orbiting. Reaching TRL 4-5, BETs appears ready for in-orbit demostration.
