The soils factorial equation approach was used for the analisis and description of the factors of soil formation throughout a soil catena. Relief was characterized through aerial photographs, satellite images and systematic checks of transects drawn in the sense of surface runoff and also taking into account geomorphological features. Vegetation cover and land use were described and vegetation components were indified by its local names to defined vegetations indicators (VI) for the local conditions. Soils were described and classified according to soil taxonomy and valued by means of a parametric model proposed by Riquier et al, (1970) for determining the productivity index (PI). Two geomorphological landscapes were defined: Hilly and Valley with six positions within the landscapes: hilltop (round or elongated), preserved tableland summit, slopes of high, medium and low tableland and valleys between hills. Representative soils of each position were studied showing a highly advanced degree of edaphogenesis with PI values below 8% in all positions except the valleys with a PI of 13%. Land use type is based on semi intensive pasturing of introduced forage species, with a vegetation of brushwood and scattered shrubs, with some trees relicts of woods affected by timber extraction and turn to grassland Eight VI were identified, highly associated to local physical and hidrological soil conditions. The enormous impact of human activity on soils and vegetation as shown by active erosion processes and absence of wooded areas and the low productivity of livestock systems reported for the area, indicates the necessity of a reorientation of the present land use introducing alternatives like the incorporation of protective woods and agrosilvopastoral management systems.

Considering that the vast majority of housing stock existing in 2011 will be used to satisfy residential needs in the year 2020 and beyond, ecological urban regeneration appears clearly as the key issue in relation to global urban sustainability for the most part of this century. Thus, if the 1992 Rio Summit identified the urban environment as the main arena where the global environmental crisis should be fought, 20 years later we must emphasize that it is mainly to the real cities and territories around us now where we should address our attention

Providing experimental facilities for the Internet of Things (IoT) world is of paramount importance to materialise the Future Internet (FI) vision. The level of maturity achieved at the networking level in Sensor and Actuator networks (SAN) justifies the increasing demand on the research community to shift IoT testbed facilities from the network to the service and information management areas. In this paper we present an Experimental Platform fulfilling these needs by: integrating heterogeneous SAN infrastructures in a homogeneous way; providing mechanisms to handle information, and facilitating the development of experimental services. It has already been used to deploy applications in three different field trials: smart metering, smart places and environmental monitoring and it will be one of the components over which the SmartSantander project, that targets a large-scale IoT experimental facility, will rely on

Attentional control and Information processing speed are central concepts in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. Functional neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessment have depicted theoretical models considering attention as a complex and non-unitary process. One of its component processes, Attentional set-shifting ability, is commonly assessed using the Trail Making Test (TMT). Performance in the TMT decreases with increasing age in adults, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Besides, speed of information processing (SIP) seems to modulate attentional performance. While neural correlates of attentional control have been widely studied, there are few evidences about the neural substrates of SIP in these groups of patients. Different authors have suggested that it could be a property of cerebral white matter, thus, deterioration of the white matter tracts that connect brain regions related to set-shifting may underlie the age-related, MCI and AD decrease in performance. The aim of this study was to study the anatomical dissociation of attentional and speed mechanisms. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides a unique insight into the cellular integrity of the brain, offering an in vivo view into the microarchitecture of cerebral white matter. At the same time, the study of ageing, characterized by white matter decline, provides the opportunity to study the anatomical substrates speeded or slowed information processing. We hypothesized that FA values would be inversely correlated with time to completion on Parts A and B of the TMT, but not the derived scores B/A and B-A.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of demenMa. Neuronal and synapMc losses occur iniMally and predominantly in the medial temporal lobe structures including hippocampus, amygdala and thalamus, structures that belong to the Papez circuit. The integrity of the connecMons amongst them is essenMal for episodic memory, which is specifically impaired in AD. For this reason we have invesMgated the degeneraMon paRern of subcorMcal structures and its relaMon to early stages of AD, i.e. Mild CogniMve Impairment (MCI), both in the amnesic and mulMdomain types using structural magneMc resonance imaging (using a 3T GE scanner) and VBM‐DARTEL.

Immersion and interaction have been identified as key factors influencing the quality of experience in stereoscopic video systems. The work presented here aims to create a new paradigm for 3D Multimedia consumption exploiting these factors in order to increase user involvement. We use a 5-sided CAVETM environment to support 3D panoramic video reproduction, real-time insertion of synthetic objects into the three-dimensional scene and real-time user interaction with the inserted elements. In this paper we describe our system requirements, functionalities, conceptual design and preliminary implementation results emphasizing the most relevant challenges accomplished. The focus is on three main issues: the generation of stereoscopic video panoramas; the synchronous reproduction of immersive 3D video across multiple screens; and, the real-time insertion algorithm implemented for the integration of synthetic objects into the stereoscopic video. These results have been successfully integrated into the graphic engine managing the operation of the CAVETM infrastructure.

This paper describes the potential impact of social media and new technologies in secondary education. The case of study has been designed for the drama and theatre subject. A wide set of tools like social networks, blogs, internet, multimedia content, local press and other promotional tools are promoted to increase students’ motivation. The experiment was developed at the highschool IES Al-Satt located in Algete in the Comunidad de Madrid. The students included in the theatre group present a low academic level, 80% of them had previously repeated at least one grade, half of them come from programs for students with learning difficulties and were at risk of social exclusion. This action is supported by higher and secondary education professors and teachers who look forward to implanting networked media technologies as new tools to improve the academic results and the degree of involvement of students. The results of the experiment have been excellent, based on satisfactory opinions obtained from a survey answered by students at the end of the course, and also revealed by the analytics taken from different social networks. This project is a pioneer in the introduction and usage of new technologies in secondary high-schools in Spain.

Quality assessment is a key factor for stereoscopic 3D video content as some observers are affected by visual discomfort in the eye when viewing 3D video, especially when combining positive and negative parallax with fast motion. In this paper, we propose techniques to assess objective quality related to motion and depth maps, which facilitate depth perception analysis. Subjective tests were carried out in order to understand the source of the problem. Motion is an important feature affecting 3D experience but also often the cause of visual discomfort. The automatic algorithm developed tries to quantify the impact on viewer experience when common cases of discomfort occur, such as high-motion sequences, scene changes with abrupt parallax changes, or complete absence of stereoscopy, with a goal of preventing the viewer from having a bad stereoscopic experience.

ABSTRACT The crisis of modernity –which begins at the end of 19th Century- has been more important due to the knowledge of the limits of economic development, since it appeared to be thought reasonable, the natural resources are finite. In 1972, The Club of Rome analyzed the different options available in order to harmonize the sustainability and the environment development. It was in 1987 when The Global Commission on The Environment and the Development of UN, defined for the first time the concept of Sustainable Development. This definition that was fully incorporated in all the UN programs and it was useful as an axis, for example, in La Cumbre de la Tierra summit in Río de Janeiro in 1992. It seems obvious to satisfy energetic demand, basically after The Industrial Revolution in 19th Century, which represented an increasing use of fossil fuels, therefore greenhouse gases emission and the increasing of global average temperature. This temperature increased in the last 100 years up to 0.74ºC. The major part of the temperature increase is due to the increase observed in Greenhouse gases with human origin, at least with 90% of probability. The most important gas is the CO2 because of its quantity. In the face of the increasing use of fossil fuels, the CCS projects, Carbon Capture and Storage projects, appear as a contribution of sustainable development since it is a technology for avoiding the climate change. In order to evaluate if CCS technology is sustainable, it will be necessary to prove if the capacity for CO2 storage is available or not in a quantity greater than the production one and during the time necessary to keep the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere lower than 450ppmv (concentration imposed by IPCC). The development of full CCS projects goes through the selection of good CO2 storages that are able to support the effects of pressure injection, and assure the capacity of such storages and the watertightness of CO2. The geological characterization of the aquifer that could be potential CO2 storage should lead to determine the properties that such storage has in order to assure the adequate storage volume, the CO2 injectivity in a good rate, and the watertightness of the CO2 in the long term. The present work aims to study the parameters that have influence on the calculation of storage capacity, and for that purpose the appropriate technology has been developed for carrying out the research by mean of laboratory tests. Thus, a patent has been developed, "ATAP, equipo para ensayos petrofísicos (P201231913)", that has been used for developing the experimental part of this work. Once the technology has been developed, the study of different parameters, that have influence on the capacity of the storage, has been addressed developing different tests in ATAP. These tests define the storage volume which is related to the scope of different CO2 trap mechanisms, physical or chemical, in the storage. Tests that define the capacity of the storage to “accept” or “reject” the injected CO2, the injectivity, and tests led to determine possible leakages through injection wells. In this way we could talk about the watertightness in the aquifer in the long term and its influence on the storage capacity estimation. Together with the purpose of the storage capacity estimation, is the purpose of assuring the watertightness of such storages in the long term and anticipating the evolution of CO2 plume inside such aquifers. In order to fulfill this purpose, a dynamic model has been developed with ECLIPSE 300, for stablishing the methodology for the calculation of storage capacity estimation and the evolution of the CO2 plume, starting out with the tests carried out in ATAP. We present this work that establishes the methodology bases for the study of the influence of different petrophysics parameters in the calculation of the capacity of the storage together with the technological development of ATAP and its utilization for the determination of such parameters applicable to each aquifer.

ABSTRACT This paper traces the origins of the term „Sustainable Development‟ and of both citizen and institutional concern for the sustainability of resources, leading to the enactment of a forestry policy at international level, of which the initial milestones are the Rio Summit and other processes in which the term „Sustainability‟ was born. Those forestfocused institutional initiatives include the pan-European process that led to the publication of Sustainable Forest Management Criteria and Indicators, and other forums that highlight the link between finished wood-based products and the sustainability of the forests from which that wood is sourced. Those concepts were the culture in which forest certification systems were engendered, first FSC, promoted by environmental NGOs, and subsequently PEFC, fostered in response to FSC by private forest owners and forest-based industries. In its Introduction, this paper looks at how such concern arose and has evolved and how certification systems came into existence in Spain and developed to encompass both forest lands and forest-based products. As part of a mission to provide an applicable technical tool, new methodologies and technical proposals have been put forward over the past fifteen years aimed at guaranteeing the sustainable origin of the forest from which raw material is sourced. Although the maintenance of forest stands as a term in its own right is important, it does not take many of the aspects included in the concept of “sustainable forest management” into account. This thesis describes what SFM is and how it was born, underlying the close link between SFM and the origin of certification as a tool, explaining how Spanish forest certification is embodied in international structures, while new structures are built here in Spain on both the national and regional scale. This work also details the domain and scope of forest certification from the technical standpoint, explains its beginnings, and assesses the various systems and labels that exist - how certification has evolved internationally and nationally across systems, sectors and continents, with special emphasis on Spain. It provides a compilation of events relevant to forestry, forest industries and forest certification systems that have taken place during the years this thesis has been in preparation. It reflects on the relevance that forest and chain of custody certification holds for the paper industry, in view not only of the regulations, policies and legislation that affect forest-based products but also of its role as a tool that bonds the sustainable forest with the consumer. Implementing the range of technical specifications to demonstrate forest sustainability and traceability throughout the production process entails the administrative burden of collecting information and providing controls to process the relevant records and documents to be kept on file in compliance with the requirements made by forest certification schemes. It is therefore important to define a generic method, together with its relevant procedures, that fits the management systems (quality / environmental / integrated)existing today in pulp and paper companies, in order to implement a generic Chain of Custody scheme (common to FSC and PEFC) in a pulp and paper mill, and a due diligence system. To achieve that, it has first been necessary to analyse the production line and establish points along the route where traceabilitycontrols need to be implemented and points where raw material, semi-finished goods and end products should be monitored and recorded. Subsequently, the procedures in quality / environmental management systems need to be drafted or amended as required to include fields that reflect those records. As required by the procedures, forest-based products that have a specific characteristic shall be monitored and recorded, and a number of indicators identified in the traceability system of wood for pulp & paper, i.e.createa set of quantitative and descriptive parameters subject to regular monitoringthat reveal changes and enable the Chain of Custody system to be assessed and controlled. In addition to ensuring the traceability of wood and fibre in the pulp and paper industry -and so the sustainability of the forest from which it is sourced -, the legality of the harvesting that produces that timber will also be enhanced, thus fulfilling not only the law but also both FSC and PEFC certification schemes. The chain of custody system for pulp and paper is characterised by monitoring indicators that enable traceability to be controlled.
