This paper provides some results on the potential to minimize environmental impacts in residential buildings life cycle, through façade design strategies, analyzing also their impact on costs from a lifecycle perspective. On one hand, it assesses the environmental damage produced by the materials of the building envelope, and on the other, the benefits they offer in terms of habitability and liveability in the use phase. The analysis includes several design parameters used both for rehabilitation of existing facades, as for new facades, trying to cover various determinants and proposing project alternatives. With this study we intended to contribute to address the energy challenges for the coming years, trying also to propose pathways for innovative solutions for the building envelope.

It is very difficult to establish the costs of “no quality” in construction. Each precast unit shall be traceable to a specific set of quality control records.

One of the most significant aspects of a building?s acoustic behavior is the airborne sound insulation of the room façades, since this determines the protection of its inhabitants against environmental noise. For this reason, authorities in most countries have established in their acoustic regulations for buildings the minimum value of sound insulation that must be respected for façades. In order to verify compliance with legal requirements it is usual to perform acoustic measurements in the finished buildings and then compare the measurement results with the established limits. Since there is always a certain measurement uncertainty, this uncertainty must be calculated and taken into account in order to ensure compliance with specifications. The most commonly used method for measuring sound insulation on façades is the so-called Global Loudspeaker Method, specified in ISO 140-5:1998. This method uses a loudspeaker placed outside the building as a sound source. The loudspeaker directivity has a significant influence on the measurement results, and these results may change noticeably by choosing different loudspeakers, even though they all fulfill the directivity requirements of ISO 140-5. This work analyzes the influence of the loudspeaker directivity on the results of façade sound insulation measurement, and determines its contribution to measurement uncertainty. The theoretical analysis is experimentally validated by means of an intermediate precision test according to ISO 5725-3:1994, which compares the values of sound insulation obtained for a façade using various loudspeakers with different directivities. Today, the building sector alone accounts for 40% of the total energy consumption in the European Union (EU). In most EU member states, about 70–90% of the buildings were constructed at least 20 years ago. Due to this, these buildings have a worse energy efficiency behavior than the new ones that comply with current regulations. As a consequence, acting on the existing building stock is needed, developing special methods on assessment and advice in order to reduce the total energy consumption. This article addresses a procedure allowing the classification and characterization of existing buildings facades. It can help researchers to achieve in-depth knowledge of the facades construction and therefore knowing their thermal behavior. Once knowing that, the most appropriate upgrading strategies can be established with the purpose of reducing the energy demand. Furthermore, the classified facade typologies have been verified, complying with current and future Spanish regulations and according to the results obtained, a series of upgrading strategies based on the opaque part and those in the translucent part, have been proposed. As a conclusion, this procedure helps us to select the most appropriate improvement measures for each type of facade in order to comply with current and future Spanish regulations. This proposed method has been tested in a specific neighborhood of Madrid, in a selected period of time, between 1950 and 1980, but it could be applicable to any other city.

On Wednesday 11th May 2011 at 6:47 pm (local time) a magnitude 5.1 Mw earthquake occurred 6 km northeast of Lorca with a depth of around 2 km. As a consequence of the shallow depth and the small epicentral distance, important damage was produced in several masonry constructions and even led to the collapse of some of them. Pieces of the facades of several buildings fell down onto the sidewalk, being one of the reasons for the killing of a total of 9 people. The objective of this paper is to describe and analyze the failure patterns observed in unreinforced masonry buildings ranging from 3 to 8 floors in height. First, a brief description of the local building practices of masonry buildings is given. Then, the most important failure types of masonry buildings are described and discussed. After that, a more detailed analysis of one particular building is presented.

It is known that a green wall brings some advantages to a building. It constitutes a barrier against solar radiation, thus decreasing and delaying the incoming heat flux. The aim of this study is to quantify such advantages through analytical comparison between two facades, a vegetal facade and a conventional facade. Both were highly insulated (U-value = 0.3 W/m2K) and installed facing south on the same building in the central territory of Spain. In order to compare their thermal trend, a series of sensors were used to register superficial and indoor air temperature. The work was carried out between 17th August 2012 and 1st October 2012, with a temperature range of 12°C-36°C and a maximum horizontal radiation of 1020 W/m2. Results show that the indoor temperature of the green wall module was lower than the other. Besides, comparing superficial outdoor and indoor temperatures of the two walls to outdoor air temperatures, it was noticed that, due to the shading plants, the green wall superficial temperature was 5 °C lower on the facade, while the bare wall temperature was 15 °C higher. The living wall module temperature was 1.6 °C lower than the outdoor, while the values of the conventional one were similar to the outdoor air temperature.

The objective of this paper is to describe and analyze the failure patterns observed in reinforced concrete frame buildings with masonry infill walls ranging from 3 to 8 floors in height. Structural as well as non-structural masonry walls suffered important damage that led to redistributions of forces causing in some cases the failure of columns. The importance of the interaction between the structural frames and the infill panels is analyzed by means of non-linear Finite Element Models. The resulting load levels are compared with the member capacities and the changes of the mechanical properties during the seismic event are described and discussed. In the light of the results obtained the observed failure patterns are explained. Some comments are stated concerning the adequacy of the numerical models that are usually used during the design phase for the seismic analysis.

Los arquitectos se han sentido progresivamente inclinados a incorporar superficies de vidrio cada vez mayores en sus proyectos de arquitectura, en correspondencia con una percepción socio-cultural del vidrio vinculada al progreso, la contemporaneidad y el bienestar, así como por la versatilidad de este material para expresar aspectos de la identidad del proyecto, establecer comunicación con el entorno y actuar como un escaparate para las tecnologías emergentes. A pesar de esta receptividad para acoger los sistemas tecnológicos más avanzados, la envolvente de vidrio contemporánea muy raramente integra tecnología avanzada para el control de la luz natural. Desde la arquitectura, el proyecto de la luz natural a través de la superficie de vidrio se ha explorado muy escasamente, aún cuando en las últimas tres décadas se haya producido una gran diversidad de soluciones tecnológicas para este propósito. Uno de los motivos principales para esta falta de sinergia es la inconsistencia conceptual que impulsa a los procesos proyectuales de la arquitectura y a los desarrollos tecnológicos para la sostenibilidad. Por un lado, las especificaciones de las tecnologías del control de la luz natural se determinan fundamentalmente desde una perspectiva científica de la eficiencia, que no tiene en consideración otros intereses y preocupaciones arquitectónicos. Por otro lado, la práctica arquitectónica no ha asimilado un pensamiento técnico en torno a la luz natural que lo determine como un agente clave del proceso proyectual, incluso cuando la sostenibilidad se perfile como la fuerza que ha de liderar la arquitectura del futuro y, en este sentido, sea una prioridad absoluta minimizar las consecuencias económicas y ecológicas del impacto negativo del vidrio. Por medio del escrutinio de valores culturales, proyectuales, funcionales y ecológicos, esta tesis aborda el estudio del precario diálogo transdisciplinar entre la evolución de la envolvente de vidrio en la arquitectura contemporánea y el desarrollo de soluciones tecnológicas para el proyecto de la luz natural, e identifica sus principales puntos de divergencia como los temas centrales desde los que proyectar con vidrio en una arquitectura sostenible futura. Desde una perspectiva energética, este ejercicio es un paso crítico para concienciar sobre la gravedad de la situación presente y establecer los cimientos para líneas de intervención esenciales para hacer a ambos mundos converger. Desde la óptica arquitectónica, este estudio representa además de una oportunidad para entender los potenciales proyectuales de estas tecnologías y reflexionar sobre la relación vidrio-luz, un escenario desde el que comprender el estatus incongruente de la sostenibilidad tecnológica en la arquitectura actual, contribuyendo a que se genere una contextualización recíproca entre la investigación en energía y la práctica de la arquitectura futura. ABSTRACT Architects are increasingly demanded to incorporate extensive glazed areas in buildings in correspondence with a socio-cultural perception of glass linked with progress, contemporaneity and welfare, as well as for this material’s versatility to express identity features, establish communication with its environment, and perform as a showroom for emergent technologies. Despite this disposition to take cutting-edge technology in, the contemporary glass envelope very scarcely integrates advanced daylight control technology. From an architectural standpoint, the exploration of the manipulation of natural light through the glass surface has been very swallow, even though a wide range of technical solutions has being produced in the last three decades for this purpose. One of the core issues behind this inconsistency is the lack of established synergy between architectural design processes and sustainable technological developments. From one side, the specifications of daylighting technologies are primarily determined by a scientific perspective of efficiency and disregard fundamental architectural concerns and interests. From another, architectural practice does not conceive sustainable technologies as key active agents in the design process, despite the fact the concept of sustainability is constantly regarded as the driving force of the leading-edge architecture of the future, and in this sense, it becomes an absolute priority to minimize the ecological and economical consequences of glass decisive impact in buildings. Through the scrutiny of cultural, functional and ecological values, this thesis analyses the precarious transdisciplinary dialogue between the evolution of the glass envelope in contemporary architecture and the development of daylighting technological solutions, and identifies the core affairs necessary to a sustainable integration of glass facades into future architecture. From an energy point of view, this exercise is a critical step to raise awareness about the severity of the present situation, and to establish the underpinnings for new lines of intervention essential to make both worlds efficiently converge. Architecturally speaking, in addition to the opportunity to understand the design potentials of these technologies and reflect on the relationship glasslight, this study contributes with a scenario from which generate the reciprocal contextualization of energy building research to future architectural practices.

Air Mines The sky over the city's port was the color of a faulty screen, only partly lit up. As the silhouette of nearby buildings became darker, but more clearly visible against the fading blur-filter of a background, the realization came about how persistent a change had been taking place. Slowly, old wooden water reservoirs and rattling HVAC systems stopped being the only inhabitants of roofs. Slightly trembling, milkish jellyfish-translucent air volumes had joined the show in multiples. A few years ago artists and architects seized upon the death of buildings as their life-saving media. Equipped with constructive atlases and instruments they started disemboweling their subjects, poking about their systems, dumping out on the street the battered ugliness of their embarrassing bits and pieces, so rightly hidden by facades and height from everyday view. But, would you believe it? Even ?old ladies?, investment bankers or small children failed to get upset. Of course, old ladies are not what they used to be. It was old ladies themselves that made it happen after years of fights with the town hall, imaginative proposals and factual arguments. An industry with little financial gains but lots of welcome externalities was not, in fact, the ground for investment bankers. But they too had to admit that having otherwise stately buildings make fine particulate pencils with their facades was not the worse that could happen. Yes, making soot pencils had been found an interesting and visible end product of the endeavor, a sort of mining the air for vintage writing tools one can actually touch. The new view from the street did not seem as solid or dignified as that of old, and they hated that the market for Fine Particulates Extraction (FPE, read efpee) had to be applied on a matrix of blocks and streets that prevented undue concentration of the best or worse solutions. It had to be an evenly distributed city policy in order for the city to apply for cleaning casino money. Once the first prototypes had been deployed in buildings siding Garden Avenue or Bulwark Street even fast movers appreciated the sidekick of flower and plant smell dripping down the Urban Space Stations (USS, read use; USSs, read uses) as air and walls cooled off for a few hours after sunset. Enough. It was all nice to remember, but it was now time to go up and start the lightweight afternoon maintenance of their USS. Coop discussions had taken place all through the planning and continued through the construction phase as to how maintenance was going to be organized. Fasters had voted for a pro, pay a small amount and let them use it for rent and produce. In the end some neighbors decided they were slow enough to take care and it was now the turn. Regret came periodically, sometimes a week before, and lasted until work actually started. But lately it had been replaced by anxiety when it needed to be passed over to the next caretaker. It did not look their shift was good enough and couldn?t wait to fix it. Today small preparations needed to be made for a class visit next day from a nearby cook school. They were frequenters. It had not been easy, but it shouldn?t have been that hard. In the end, even the easiest things are hard if they involve a city, buildings and neighbors. On the face of the data, the technicalities and the way final designs had been worked out for adaptation to the different settings, the decision of where to go was self evident, but organization issues and the ever-growing politics of taste in a city of already-gentrified-rodents almost put the project in the frozen orbit of timeless beautiful future possibilities. This is how it was. A series of designs by XClinic and OSS had made it possible to adapt to different building structures, leave in most cases the roof untouched and adapted a new technology of flexing fiberglass tubes that dissipated wind pressure in smooth bending.......

La escasez de recursos, la desertización creciente y el previsible calentamiento global forman un escenario físico sin precedentes que urge la revisión de las relaciones entre arquitectura y agua en la urbanización de los paisajes secos, donde la aridez es el factor limitante principal. Cuestionar la idea de escasez, la de residuo o la de confort es el punto de partida para analizar la hidrología urbana. La condición ubicua y dinámica del agua, sus continuos cambios de estado y las implicaciones energéticas y ambientales involucradas argumentan a favor de un entendimiento integral, holístico, que aborda el diseño en relación a lo paisajístico, lo infraestructural y lo ambiental como un único ámbito de investigación, planteado en términos no solo de materia o de escasez, sino de energía. Este trabajo se interesa por el rol de la arquitectura en este proyecto conjunto, integral, del espacio físico con el ciclo hidrológico donde lo orgánico, lo geológico y lo atmosférico están ligados, y donde las categorías de lo hidrológico y lo hidráulico se confunden. Las profundas implicaciones culturales en la construcción de la naturaleza urbana y en la relación con el cuerpo humano adquieren especial notoriedad en los modelos de paisaje y de espacio público adoptados, importados desde las geografías húmedas, y en la estigmatización del agua desde los presupuestos del higienismo decimonónico, que conduce al hidrofugado general de una ciudad aséptica y estéril, que se extiende hasta las envolventes de fachadas estancas y los interiores blancos y satinados. La búsqueda de referentes salta la modernidad hacia contextos de baja energía como el oasis tradicional de las tierras áridas, que concilia la formación de un ecosistema productivo con la climatización de un espacio público exterior, o los ambientes aislados de la investigación aeroespacial, con ciclos cerrados de materia. Las condiciones del ciclo del agua, como la vinculación con el suelo y el territorio, la capacidad de disolver, de mezclarse y de lavar, su volumen variable y su papel como termorregulador señalan el interés que características físicas como la fluidez, la biodiversidad, la hidrofilia y la transpirabilidad tienen para una arquitectura con competencias hidráulicas y un espacio urbano transparente a los procesos del agua. La morfología y localización, la elección de escalas, jerarquías y relaciones entre espacios y la reformulación de los sistemas constructivos aparecen como herramientas y categorías propias desde las que proponer mejores respuestas a problemas como la deshidratación, la erosión y la contaminación. Una urbanización permeable e hidrófila que absorba el agua como un recurso valioso, nuevos ensamblajes para la bioquímica urbana (que introduzcan una idea de limpieza más próxima a fertilidad que a la desinfección), y el diseño de las condiciones atmosféricas a través de una arquitectura transpirable, que se empapa y rezuma frescor, son las claves de este nuevo proyecto. La ciudad se piensa como una síntesis multiescalar de espacios hidráulicos que aporta mayor resiliencia frente a la desertificación y las condiciones climáticas extremas, y mayor visibilidad en la escena pública al agua y a las inevitables conexiones entre ecología y economía. Pero también es una oportunidad para revisar las categorías disciplinares, para renovar las consistencias materiales, las calidades ambientales y las relaciones entre el cuerpo y el espacio. ABSTRACT The shortage of resources, foreseeable global warming and increasing desertification create an unprecedented prospect that question the existing relationships between water and architecture, in the urbanization of the arid lands. The awareness of the huge volumes of water that pierce unnoticed through urban space, their impact on the landscape as well as on environmental qualities, promote a design field where cultural, social and political considerations intersect, related to the body and the physical experience of space within the built environment. Fluidity and ubiquity, solution ability, variability and cyclical processes are characteristic of water as material, directly related with the fields of potential, chemical and thermal energy and the reality of its mass, as it occupies a changing volume in space. These are also the imposing cross sections that water introduces into the project, that argue in favor of a comprehensive and holistic understanding, of addressing design in relationship to landscape, infrastructure and environmental issues as a one single area of research. This work attempts to investigate how architecture, with its specific tools, can partake in the design of water cycle in the space, linking the organic, geological, and atmospheric, blurring the lines between hydrology and hydraulic. It aims to identify issues, within the continuous query associated with water, that deal with the architectural project and may have here better results. The deep cultural implications in the construction of urban nature and the relationship with the body, acquire special notoriety in the models of landscape and public space adopted, imported from humid geographies. Also in the stigmatization of water from the premises of nineteenth- century hygienics, which lead to the entire waterproofing of an aseptic and sterile city, to the sealed facades and white and polished interiors. The search for alternative references goes beyond modernity towards a mindset of low energy, as the traditional oasis of arid lands, which aims to reconcile the formation of a productive ecosystem with the conditioning of an outdoor public space, or the controlled environments of aerospace research, with closed cycles of matter. Fluidity, biodiversity, hydrophilicity and breathability are characteristic of an architecture with hydraulic competences. The distributing phenomenon of water, its necessary connectivity to the ground and to small cycles in the ecosystems, shows strong affinities with an infrastructural architecture, as an alternative to large-scale centralized networks. Its volume has approximated to the dimensions of the built space, promoting a new found condition of coexistence. A permeable and hydrophilic urbanization absorbs water as a valuable resource; new assemblies for urban biochemistry introduce an idea of sanitation closer to fertility than to disinfection; a breathable architecture that soaks and exudes freshness design the atmospheric conditions: these are the essential components of this new project. The city is understood as a synthesis of multi-scale hydraulic spaces that provides greater resilience against desertification and increases the visibility of water and the linkages between ecology and economy in the public scene. It is also an opportunity to review the disciplinary categories of architecture, the material consistencies, the environmental qualities and the relationship between body and space.

The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness is funding the SHERIF Research Project, which falls under the INNPACTO pr ogram. This project aims to increase the rate of the existing building refurbishment fro m the energy efficiency point of view by designing a facade system that must be an economica l, flexible and integrated solution 1 . Under this project has been performing several task s regarding the constructive characterization and energy evaluation of the therm al behaviour of facades on existing buildings . In order to perform the latter task, in which this article will focus, has been developing a survey of various buildings in the nei ghbourhood Ciudad de los Angeles, which has as main objective the comparison between the ac tual energy and light behaviour of different buildings, prior and posterior to any ref urbishment works have been undertaken. The evaluation of the actual performance of buildin gs before and after being refurbished is aimed to determine the impact of the work developed as well as learn from the work performed for future interventions.

Brick facades are a construction type, strongly linked to local construction characteristics and methods. In Spain, particularly in Castilla, the facades have been built since the '80s with Castilian half foot (11.5 cm), resting on the edge of slabs. The design of these facades, to horizontal loads from wind, depending on the codes used, can lead to completely different valid solutions. Applying same loads, the facades studied with current European standard (Eurocode 6), have a maximum length of 7.1 m between supports, while the Spanish code, Technical Building Code - Structural Safety Masonry, (CTE SE-F), 8.4 m can be achieved. This represents an increase of flexural strength, depending on the calculation model used, which can reach until 8 times. This is due to the difference of the calculation method and the structural model in one and another standard, depending on if this facade is analyzed as a vertical or horizontal beam or by formation of a vertical or horizontal archh. This paper analyzes the constructive solution of the brick facades that results from applying Spanish or European standards and how it affects the model applied in the safety of the resulting facade.

La madera termotratada es madera modificada mediante un proceso térmico a elevadas temperaturas que le proporciona mayor estabilidad dimensional y durabilidad sin incorporar productos químicos perjudiciales para el medio ambiente. Hasta el momento se ha aplicado fundamentalmente a madera de coniferas por motivos económicos, siendo su uso más habitual en ambientes exteriores o de elevada humedad, como elementos de revestimiento no estructurales, carpinterías, mobiliario de jardín, etc. En la presente tesis se estudia la viabilidad de la madera termotratada de frondosas para uso estructural, en particular fresno (Fraxinus excelsior L) y haya (Fagus sylvatica L). Con este fin, y considerando que el termotratamiento modifica la estructura interna de la madera resultando en un nuevo material, se realizan estudios experimentales y numéricos para su caracterización. Estos trabajos se desarrollan bajo el enfoque de la Mecánica de Fractura debido a la pérdida de resistencia y aumento de fragilidad que presenta el material, especialmente a tracción perpendicular a las fibras. Así mismo, se lleva a cabo una recopilación de las bases, fundamentos y metodologías de esta teoría aplicados a madera sin tratar y otros materiales debido a la inexistencia de este tipo de estudios en madera termotratada. De igual manera se realiza un programa de caracterización mecánica del material para determinar sus propiedades elásticas considerando un modelo ortótropo, necesarios en la investigación del comportamiento a fractura. El trabajo derivó en el desarrollo de un nuevo método de ensayo para la determinación multiparamétrica a partir de un sólo espécimen, proporcionando resultados mucho más robustos que los obtenidos con la metodología convencional de ensayos. En base a los trabajos realizados, considerando las limitaciones de resistencia y fragilidad, así como la dudosa aplicabilidad de las normativas existentes en madera sin tratar, se aconseja no utilizar tratamientos térmicos intensos en elementos estructurales primarios. Se propone su aplicación en elementos secundarios, de manera que un posible colapso no implique una pérdida de fiabilidad global de la estructura. Se estudia la viabilidad de un panel sandwich innovador y ecológico para fachadas expuesto a cargas de viento, compuesto de madera termotratada en las caras y panel aislante de fibras de madera con función estructural en el alma. Esta investigación se desarrolló dentro del proyecto de investigación Europeo "Holiwood", Holistic implementation of European thermal treated hardwood (TMT) in the sector of construction industry and noise protection by sustainable, knowledge-based and value added products, perteneciente al sexto Programa Marco. ABSTRACT Hcat-trcatcd wood is modified wood by a thermal process at high temperatures which provides greater dimensional stability and durability without adding harmful chemicals to the environment. It has been mainly applied to softwoods due mainly to economical reasons, being its most common use outdoors or in high humidity environments, as non-structural elements, furniture, etc. The present Thesis studies the feasibility of heat-treated hardwoods for structural uses, particularly ash (Fraxinus excelsior L) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L). To this end, and considering that heat treatment modifies the internal structure of the wood resulting in a new material, experimental and numerical studies are performed for its characterization. This investigation is developed under the approach of Fracture Mechanics due to the loss of strength and the increase in brittlcncss of the material, especially in tension perpendicular to the grain. Likewise, it holds a collection of the bases, foundations and methodologies of this theory applied to untreated wood and other materials due to the lack of such studies in heat-treated wood. In addition, studies for the mechanical characterization of the material are performed in order to determine the elastic properties considering an orthotropic model. This work is necessary in the investigation of the fracture behavior. It led to the development of a new test method for multiparameter determination by using just a single specimen, providing much more robust results than those obtained with conventional test methodology. Based on this investigation, and considering the limitations of strength and brittleness, and the questionable applicability of existing standards for untreated wood, it is advised not to use intense heat treatments in primary structural elements. It is proposed the application to secondary elements, so that a possible collapse does not involve a loss of overall reliability of the structure. It is studied the feasibility of an innovative and ecological sandwich panel for facades exposed to wind loads, composed by heat-treated wood faces and insulating wood fiberboard with structural function in the core. This investigación was developed within the European research project "Holiwood", Holistic implementation of European thermal treated hardwood (TMT) in the sector of construction industry and noise protection by sustainable, knowledge-based and value added products, of the Sixth Framework Program.

The use of vegetal systems in facades affects the reduction of the buildings' energy demand, the attenuation of the urban heat island (UHI) and the filtration of pollutants present in the air. Even so, up to now the knowledge about the effect of this type of systems on the thermal performance of insulated facades is limited. This article presents the results of an experimental study carried out in a vegetal facade located in a continental Mediterranean climate zone. The objective is to study the effect of a vegetal finishing, formed by plants and substrate, on the thermal-energy performance of an insulated facade under summer conditions. To this effect, the thermal data obtained from two full-scale experimental mock-ups of the same dimensions and composition of the enclosure and only different in the south facade's enclosure where one incorporates a vegetation layer are compared and analysed. The results show that, in spite of the high thermal resistance of the enclosure, the effect of the vegetation is very positive, particularly in the warmer hours of the day. Therefore, vegetal facades can be used as a passive cooling strategy, reducing the consumption of energy for refrigeration and improving the comfort conditions of the users. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
