Previously degradation studies carried out, over a number of different mortars by the research team, have shown that observed degradation does not exclusively depend on the solution equilibrium pH, nor the aggressive anions relative solubility. In our tests no reason was found that could allow us to explain, why same solubility anions with a lower pH are less aggressive than others. The aim of this paper is to study cement pastes behavior in aggressive environments. As observed in previous research, this cement pastes behaviors are not easily explained only taking into account only usual parameters, pH, solubility etc. Consequently the paper is about studying if solution physicochemical characteristics are more important in certain environments than specific pH values. The paper tries to obtain a degradation model, which starting from solution physicochemical parameters allows us to interpret the different behaviors shown by different composition cements. To that end, the rates of degradation of the solid phases were computed for each considered environment. Three cement have been studied: CEM I 42.5R/SR, CEM II/A-V 42.5R and CEM IV/B-(P-V) 32.5 N. The pastes have been exposed to five environments: sodium acetate/acetic acid 0.35 M, sodium sulfate solution 0.17 M, a solution representing natural water, saturated calcium hydroxide solution and laboratory environment. The attack mechanism was meant to be unidirectional, in order to achieve so; all sides of cylinders were sealed except from the attacked surface. The cylinders were taking out of the exposition environments after 2, 4, 7, 14, 30, 58 and 90 days. Both aggressive solution variations in solid phases and in different depths have been characterized. To each age and depth the calcium, magnesium and iron contents have been analyzed. Hydrated phases evolution studied, using thermal analysis, and crystalline compound changes, using X ray diffraction have been also analyzed. Sodium sulphate and water solutions stabilize an outer pH near to 8 in short time, however the stability of the most pH dependent phases is not the same. Although having similar pH and existing the possibility of forming a plaster layer near to the calcium leaching surface, this stability is greater than other sulphate solutions. Stability variations of solids formed by inverse diffusion, determine the rate of degradation.

Soybean meal (SBM) is the main protein source in livestock feeds. United States (USA), Brazil (BRA), and Argentine (ARG) are the major SBM exporter countries. The nutritive value of SBM varies because genetics, environment, farming conditions, and processing of the beans influence strongly the content and availability of major nutrients. The present research was conducted to determine the influence of origin (USA, BRA and ARG) on nutritive value and protein quality of SBM.

In developing instrumentation for the measurement of fruit quality, there is the need for fast and non-destructive devices, based on sensors, to be installed on-line. In the case of some fruits, like peaches, post-harvest ripeness, which is closely related to high quality for the consumer, is a priority. During ripening, external appearance (colour) and internal mechanical (firmness) and chemical (sugars and acids) quality are main features that evolve rapidly from and unripe to a ripe (high quality) stage. When considering the evolution of fruit quality in this scheme, external colour and firmness are shown to evolve in a parallel pattern, if monitored from the time of harvest to full consumer ripeness ( Rood, 1957; Crisosto et al, 1995; Kader, 1996). The visible (VIS) reflectance spectrum is a fast and easy reference that can be used to estimate quality of peaches, if we could show it to be reliably correlated with peach ripening rate during postharvest (Genard et al. 1994; Moras, 1995; Delwiche and Baumgartner, 1983; Delwiche et al. 1987; Slaughter, 1995; Lleo et al., 1998). Taste, described as an expert acceptance score, improves with ripeness (firmness and colour evolution), when considering the fruits on the tree, and also post-harvest.

This work shows the objective results of the acoustic quality of the Compañia de Jesús Church in Cordoba, Argentina. The acoustics of this Temple, built by the Orden Jesuita (Jesuit Order) two centuries ago and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000, is currently considered optimal by musicians as well as general public. In the second half of XVI century, with the Catholic reform, the need for improved speech intelligibility was given priority, being the Jesuit one of the orders that gave most importance to the construction of their temples. This church has constructive and spatial characteristics consistent with those needs. With the purpose of carrying out the acoustic assessment of the precincts, a work methodology that allowed comparing the results obtained from objective measures was developed by means of implementation of field measurements and space modeling, with subjective appreciation results, by developing surveys, with the aim of characterizing acoustically the sound space. This paper shows the comparison between the subjective results and objective criteria, which allowed important conclusions on the acoustic behavior of the temple to be obtained. In this way interesting data were obtained in relation to the subjective response of the acoustics of the church.

We study a climatologically important interaction of two of the main components of the geophysical system by adding an energy balance model for the averaged atmospheric temperature as dynamic boundary condition to a diagnostic ocean model having an additional spatial dimension. In this work, we give deeper insight than previous papers in the literature, mainly with respect to the 1990 pioneering model by Watts and Morantine. We are taking into consideration the latent heat for the two phase ocean as well as a possible delayed term. Non-uniqueness for the initial boundary value problem, uniqueness under a non-degeneracy condition and the existence of multiple stationary solutions are proved here. These multiplicity results suggest that an S-shaped bifurcation diagram should be expected to occur in this class of models generalizing previous energy balance models. The numerical method applied to the model is based on a finite volume scheme with nonlinear weighted essentially non-oscillatory reconstruction and Runge–Kutta total variation diminishing for time integration.

La presencia de un monolito en la coronación de un dique rompeolas tiene como principales ventajas la reducción del volumen de elementos necesarios en el manto y la mejora de la operatividad de los muelles que abriga, lo que supone un importante ahorro de coste tanto de ejecución como de explotación y mantenimiento. Por ello, la utilización del espaldón en los diques rompeolas se encuentra generalizada desde hace décadas en numerosos puertos de todo el mundo. Para el diseño de este elemento se han ido desarrollando diversas metodologías, siendo la primera de ellas (Iribarren y Nogales) propuesta en la década de los cincuenta, y la última (Berenguer y Baonza) en el año 2006. Estos procedimientos se basan en series de ensayos en modelo físico y tienen como filosofía la determinación de las cargas que genera el oleaje al impactar contra el paramento vertical para poder dimensionar un monolito estable frente a tales acciones. Sin embargo, las averías que se han producido en este elemento particular, incluso en la pasada década, ponen de relieve la gran sensibilidad de este elemento frente a estas y otras acciones de diseño. El objetivo de la presente Tesis Doctoral es el desarrollo de un método de diseño alternativo a los existentes, basado en la observación de diques reales que se encuentran en funcionamiento en la actualidad y mediante el cual se obtenga directamente como resultado las dimensiones principales del monolito en lugar de las cargas debidas al impacto de la ola incidente. Para ello, se ha realizado el análisis comparativo de los métodos de diseño de espaldones disponibles hasta la fecha. Antes de establecer una nueva metodología primeramente se ha estudiado el Estado del Arte, del cual se ha realizado un análisis crítico, donde se indican las posibles incertidumbres y limitaciones que presenta cada metodología. Para lograr el objetivo de la presente Tesis Doctoral se desarrolla una investigación basada en los datos de veintitrés diques ubicados en la fachada mediterránea española, considerando variables tanto climáticas como geométricas del propio dique. Se ha seguido el principio del Teorema Π para formar monomios adimensionales y, a través de combinaciones entre ellos, establecer relaciones de dependencia. Con los resultados obtenidos se ha elaborado una metodología de diseño que se propone como respuesta al objetivo planteado. Wall erected on top of a breakwater has two main advantages: lower amount of armour elements and better operating capacity of the inner harbor, which means an appreciable construction, operating and maintenance saving. Therefore, many breakwaters have been designed with crown wall all over the world. Different design methods have been developed through the years. The first one (Iribarren & Nogales) was set in the fifties, and the latest (Berenguer & Baonza) was developed in 2006. All of them are based on laboratory tests series and their common philosophy is to calculate the wave forces on the wall in order to design an element stable against these forces. However, crown wall failures have occured even in last decade, which point the high sensitivity of this element. The objective of this Thesis is to develop an alternative design procedure based on real breakwaters data, which gave as a direct result the most important measures of the crown wall instead of wave loads. In order to achieve the objective, firstly a critical analysis of the State of the Art has been carried out, determining ranges of application and detecting uncertainties. A research on twenty-three breakwaters of the Mediterranean Spanish coast has been carried out to fulfill the objective of this Thesis, taking into account both climatic and geometric parameters. It has been followed Theorem Π to make non-dimensional monomials and, through combinations among them, identify dependency rates. Obtained results lead to a design method.

In this paper, the dynamic response of a hydro power plant for providing secondary regulation reserve is studied in detail. Special emphasis is given to the elastic water column effects both in the penstock and the tailrace tunnel. For this purpose, a nonlinear model based on the analogy between mass and momentum conservation equations of a water conduit and those of wave propagation in transmission lines is used. The influence of the plant configuration and design parameters on the fulfilment of the Spanish Electrical System Operator requirements is analysed

We propose a level set based variational approach that incorporates shape priors into edge-based and region-based models. The evolution of the active contour depends on local and global information. It has been implemented using an efficient narrow band technique. For each boundary pixel we calculate its dynamic according to its gray level, the neighborhood and geometric properties established by training shapes. We also propose a criterion for shape aligning based on affine transformation using an image normalization procedure. Finally, we illustrate the benefits of the our approach on the liver segmentation from CT images.

The application of the response of fruits to low energy for mechanical impacts is described, for evaluation of post-harvest ripening of avocadoes of the variety "Hass". An impactor of 50g of weight, provided with an accelerometer, and free-falling from a height of 4 cm, is used; it is interfaced to a computer and uses a special software for retrieving and analyzing the deceleration data. Impact response parameters of individual fruits were compared to firmness of the pulp, measured by the most used method of double-plate puncture, as well as to other physical and physiological parameters: color, skin puncture ethylene production rate and others. Two groups of fruits were carefully selected, stored at 6º C (60 days) and ripened at 20ºC (11 days), and tested during the storage period. It is shown that, as in other types of fruits, impact response can be a good predictor of firmness in avocadoes, obtaining the same accuracy as with destructive firmness measurements. Mathematical and multiple regression models are calculated and compared to measured data, with which a prediction of storage period can be made for these fruits.

Ripple-based controls can strongly reduce the required output capacitance in PowerSoC converter thanks to a very fast dynamic response. Unfortunately, these controls are prone to sub-harmonic oscillations and several parameters affect the stability of these systems. This paper derives and validates a simulation-based modeling and stability analysis of a closed-loop V 2Ic control applied to a 5 MHz Buck converter using discrete modeling and Floquet theory to predict stability. This allows the derivation of sensitivity analysis to design robust systems. The work is extended to different V 2 architectures using the same methodology.

Dynamics of binary mixtures such as polymer blends, and fluids near the critical point, is described by the model-H, which couples momentum transport and diffusion of the components [1]. We present an extended version of the model-H that allows to study the combined effect of phase separation in a polymer blend and surface structuring of the film itself [2]. We apply it to analyze the stability of vertically stratified base states on extended films of polymer blends and show that convective transport leads to new mechanisms of instability as compared to the simpler diffusive case described by the Cahn- Hilliard model [3, 4]. We carry out this analysis for realistic parameters of polymer blends used in experimental setups such as PS/PVME. However, geometrically more complicated states involving lateral structuring, strong deflections of the free surface, oblique diffuse interfaces, checkerboard modes, or droplets of a component above of the other are possible at critical composition solving the Cahn Hilliard equation in the static limit for rectangular domains [5, 6] or with deformable free surfaces [6]. We extend these results for off-critical compositions, since balanced overall composition in experiments are unusual. In particular, we study steady nonlinear solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation for bidimensional layers with fixed geometry and deformable free surface. Furthermore we distinguished the cases with and without energetic bias at the free surface. We present bifurcation diagrams for off-critical films of polymer blends with free surfaces, showing their free energy, and the L2-norms of surface deflection and the concentration field, as a function of lateral domain size and mean composition. Simultaneously, we look at spatial dependent profiles of the height and concentration. To treat the problem of films with arbitrary surface deflections our calculations are based on minimizing the free energy functional at given composition and geometric constraints using a variational approach based on the Cahn-Hilliard equation. The problem is solved numerically using the finite element method (FEM).

This paper presents the experimental study developed on a prismatic beam with H section, sometimes used in bridges as suspenders, vertical bars or decks. The purpose of this study is to understand the physical behavior of the air around this type of section, in order to reduce the aerodynamic loads, the onset speed of galloping and even to avoid it. To achieve this, a study of the influence of all geometric parameters that define the section has been developed. Previously, the most interesting configurations have been selected using a smoke flow visualization technique in the wind-tunnel, then the corresponding static aerodynamic loads were measured, completed with dynamic tests and, finally, the parameters governing the phenomenon of galloping determined.

The first step in order to comply with the European Union goals of Near to Zero Energy Buildings is to reduce the energy consumption in buildings. Most of the building consumption is related to the use of active systems to maintain the interior comfort. Passive design strategies contribute to improve the interior comfort conditions, increasing the energy efficiency in buildings and reducing their energy consumption. In this work, an analysis of the passive strategies used in Net Energy Plus Houses has been made. The participating houses of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 competition were used as case studies. The passive design strategies of these houses were compared with the annual simulations, and the competition monitored data, especially during the Passive Monitored Period. The analysis included the thermal properties of the building envelope, geometric parameters, ratios and others passive solutions such as Thermal Energy Storage systems, evaporative cooling, night ventilation, solar gains and night sky radiation cooling. The results reflect the impact of passive design strategies on the houses' comfort and efficiency, as well as their influence in helping to achieve the Zero Energy Buildings category.

El objetivo de esta Tesis es el estudio sistemático del fenómeno aeroelástico de galope de una viga prismática con sección transversal en H. En particular, se pretende analizar la influencia de determinados parámetros geométricos que definen la geometría de la sección y el efecto del ángulo de ataque de la corriente sobre la estabilidad del fenómeno de oscilación. El interés en el estudio de esta forma de la sección transversal de una viga se basa en el hecho de que, con cierta frecuencia, se sigue utilizando, por su buen comportamiento estructural, en construcciones civiles como tableros y tirantes de puentes de gran longitud, señalizaciones, luminarias y, en general, en grandes estructuras metálicas. Los parámetros geométricos seleccionados para su estudio son tres: el espesor de las dos alas verticales, su porosidad y el espesor de sendas ranuras en la zona de unión entre el alma y las alas de la sección. Inicialmente se han realizado ensayos estáticos en un túnel aerodinámico con objeto de obtener las cargas aerodinámicas y poder aplicar el criterio casi-estático de Glauert - Den Hartog. En estos ensayos, se han medido tanto las fuerzas de sustentación y resistencia aerodinámicas como las distribuciones de presiones en la superficie de la zona central de la sección. Posteriormente, se han realizado ensayos de visualización de flujo, utilizando un túnel de humos, para poder comprender mejor el comportamiento físico del aire alrededor del cuerpo. El estudio estático se ha completado realizando ensayos con PIV, que permiten realizar una medida precisa de la velocidad del campo fluido. Por último, se han realizado ensayos dinámicos en otro túnel aerodinámico con objeto de contrastar la aplicabilidad del criterio casi-estático, la velocidad de inicio de galope y la amplitud de las oscilaciones producidas. Los resultados muestran que el espesor de las alas verticales, aunque modifica apreciablemente la magnitud de las cargas aerodinámicas, no afecta sustancialmente a la estabilidad a galope, mientras que su porosidad sí ejerce un control efectivo que permite reducir este fenómeno e incluso evitarlo, en determinados casos. En todas las situaciones el criterio de Glauert-Glauert - Den Hartog ha resultado ser aplicable y, en ocasiones, más restrictivo que los resultados obtenidos en ensayos dinámicos. La presencia de una ranura en la zona de unión entre el alma y las dos alas, o su combinación con la porosidad en las alas, reduce la intensidad de galope, incrementando la velocidad crítica de su inicio, pero no logra hacer que desaparezca, como se justificará en el desarrollo del trabajo. ABSTRACT Galloping is a type of aeroelastic instability characterized by a large amplitude oscillation at the natural frequency of the structure, producing normal motion to wind. It usually occurs in slender bodies lightly damped at sufficiently high speeds. In this thesis an experimental study has been developed on the galloping instability of a beam with H cross section, which is inscribed in a rectangle with a slender 1: 2. A systematic study has been carried out of the influence of three different geometric parameters on galloping, in the range of 0 to 90° angle of attack of the incoming stream. These parameters are the thickness of the flanges of the section, the porosity of the flanges, the thickness of two slots along the span, in the area between the flange and the central core of the section, and the combination effect of the last two parameters. First of all, static tests have been performed in a wind tunnel to determine the lift and drag forces by using a balance and then the quasi-static stability criterion due to Glauert-Den Hartog has been determined. Later, to better understand and verify the results previously obtained, it has also been tested the pressure distribution on the surface of the model, flow visualization in a second, smoke, wind tunnel, and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) study of the flow around the section, in a third tunnel. Finally, dynamic tests have been performed, on a fourth wind tunnel, for determining the amplitude and frequency of the oscillations in each case. The results have been collected in stability diagrams for each geometric parameter studied. These results show that the more critical angles of attack of the stream for galloping behavior are close to 0 and 90º. It has been found that the thickness of the flanges, although changes the galloping behavior on the section, does not reduce it substantially. However, the porosity in the flanges has been proved to be an efficient control mechanism on galloping, and even above 40% porosity, it disappears. The thickness of the slot studied and its combination with the porosity in the flanges in some cases reduces the aerodynamic forces appreciably but fail to prevent galloping at all angles of attack.
