Immersion and interaction have been identified as key factors influencing the quality of experience in stereoscopic video systems. An experimental prototype designed to explore the influence of these factors in 3D video applications is described here1. The focus is on the real-time insertion algorithm of new 3D models into the original video streams. Using this algorithm, our prototype is aimed to explore a new interaction paradigm ? similar to the augmented reality approach ? with 3D video applications.

Switching of a signal beam by another control beam at different wavelength is demonstrated experimentally using the optical bistability occurring in a 1.55 mm-distributed feedback semiconductor optical amplifier (DFBSOA) working in reflection. Counterclockwise (S-shaped) and reverse (clockwise) bistability are observed in the output of the control and the signal beam respectively, as the power of the input control signal is increased. With this technique an optical signal can be set in either of the optical input wavelengths by appropriate choice of the powers of the input signals. The switching properties of the DFBSOA are studied experimentally as the applied bias current is increased from below to above threshold and for different levels of optical power in the signal beam and different wavelength detunings between both input signals. Higher on-off extinction ratios, wider bistable loops and lower input power requirements for switching are obtained when the DFBSOA is operated slightly above its threshold value.

tWatercore distribution inside apple fruit (block or radial), and its incidence (% of tissue) were relatedto the effect of solar radiation inside the canopy as measured by a set of low-cost irradiation sensors.221 samples were harvested in two seasons from the top and the bottom of the canopy and submittedto the non-invasive and non-destructive technique of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in order toobtain 20 inner tomography slices from each fruit and analyze the damaged areas using an interactive3D segmentation method. The number of fruit corresponding to each type of damage and the relevantpercentage were calculated and it was found that apples from the top of the tree were mainly of the radialtype (84%) and had more watercore (approx. 5% more) than apples from the bottom (65% radial). From theimage segmentation, the Euler number, a morphometric parameter, was extracted from the segmentedimages and related to the type of watercore symptoms. Apples with block watercore were grouped inEuler numbers between −400 and 400 with a small evolution. For apples with radial development, theEuler number was highly negative: up to −1439. Significant differences were also found regarding sugarcomposition, with higher fructose and total sugar contents in apples from the upper canopy, compared tothose in the lower canopy location. In the seasons studied (2011 and 2012), significantly higher sorbitoland lower sucrose and fructose contents were found in watercore-affected tissue compared to the healthytissue of affected apples and also compared to healthy apples.

This paper analyzes the behavior of a neural processing unit based on the optical bistable properties of semiconductor laser amplifiers. A similar unit to the reported here was previously employed in the simulation of the mammalian retina. The main advantages of the present cell are its larger fan-out and the possibility of different responses according to the light wavelength impinging onto the cell. These properties allow to work with larger structures as well as to obtain different behaviors according to the light characteristics. This new approach gives a possible modeling closer to the real biological configurations. Moreover, a more detailed analysis of the basic cell internal behavior is reported

This paper presents a simple theory to analyze some of the more common visual illusions. The reported mathematical model is able to give some numerical results concerning well known phenomena as the Zollner, Muller-Lyer or Wundt illusions. We present two different approaches, the first one related with the symmetrical operations present in each image and the second one concerning a proposed vector field related with the lines present at the image

This paper reports a model of the mammalian retina as well as an interpretation of some functions of the visual cortex. Its main objective is to simulate some of the behaviors observed at the different retina cells depending on the characteristics of the light impinging onto the photoreceptors. This simulation is carried out with a simple structure employed previously as basic building block of some optical computer architectures. Its possibility to perform any type of Boolean function allows a wide range of behaviors.

A new method to analyze the influence of possible hysteresis cycles in devices employed for optical computing architectures is reported. A simple full adder structure is taken as the basis for this method. Single units, called optical programmable logic cells, previously reported by the authors, compose this structure. These cells employ, as basic devices, on-off and SEED-like components. Their hysteresis cycles have been modeled by numerical analysis. The influence of the different characteristic cycles is studied with respect to the obtained possible errors at the output. Two different approaches have been adopted. The first one shows the change in the arithmetic result output with respect to the different values and positions of the hysteresis cycle. The second one offers a similar result, but in a polar diagram where the total behavior of the system is better analyzed.

A new methodology to study irregular behaviours in logic cells is reported. It is based on two types of diagrams, namely phase and working diagrams. Sets of four bits are grouped and represented by their hexadecimal equivalent. Some hexadecimal numbers correspond to certain logic functions. The influence of the internal and external tolerances, namely those appearing in the employed devices and in the working signals, may be analysed with this method. Its importance in the case of logic structures with chaotic behaviours is studied.

A new method to obtain digital chaos synchronization between two systems is reported. It is based on the use of Optically Programmable Logic Cells as chaos generators. When these cells are feedbacked, periodic and chaotic behaviours are obtained. They depend on the ratio between internal and external delay times. Chaos synchronization is obtained if a common driving signal feeds both systems. A control to impose the same boundary conditions to both systems is added to the emitter. New techniques to analyse digital chaos are presented. The main application of these structures is to obtain secure communications in optical networks.

The Concentrated Photovoltaics (CPV) promise relies upon the use of high-efficiency triple-junction solar cells (with proven efficiencies of over 44%) and upon high-performance optics that allow for high concentration concurrent with relaxed manufacturing tolerances (all key elements for low-cost mass production). Additionally, uniform illumination is highly desirable for efficiency and reliability reasons. All of these features have to be achieved with inexpensive optics containing only a few (in general no more than 2) optical elements. In this paper we show that the degrees of freedom using free-forms allow the introduction of multiple functionalities required for CPV with just 2 optical elements, one of which is a Fresnel lens.

Untapered multifiber unions are reported to show a spectral behavior similar to the tapered ones. Their oscillatory behavior does not depend on the biconical regions. This suggests a novel way to make low-cost all-fiber devices with applications as passive components such as optical filters and wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers. Two types of multimode fibers have been studied and information about the index profile influence has been obtained. Polarization insensitivity and temperature stability have been observed.

We can take advantage of this characteristic for rising the temperature of cancer cells above the threshold at which cellular death would occur. From these principles, this thesis is oriented to the development and characterization of a series of optical hyperthermia prototypes based on the irradiation of gold nanoparticles using the suitable light, and on the in vitro application of this therapy over cancer cells, to understand the mechanical and thermal processes associated with this kind of hyperthermia, developing descriptive models, and to study and to approach new ways of irradiation in order to, ultimately, optimize the described processes and make them more effective. The obtained results show that, the use of gold nanoparticles, and more specifically, of gold nanorods, to carry out optical hyperthermia therapies, allows the development of very effective therapies in order to induce death in VIII cancer cells, especially in superficial tumors, or like surgical complement in more internal tumors. However, the toxicity effects of the gold nanoparticles still need to be studied more detail, because this kind of therapies will be feasible only if a complete biocompatibility is achieved. On the other hand, the exhaustive study of the thermal processes that take place during the irradiation of the nanoparticles resulted in a series of models that allow the determination of the photothermal efficiency of the nanoparticles and also the visualization of the temperature evolution, both at nanoscale and at macroscale, as a function of the optical and thermal parameters of the system. The proposal of new ways of irradiation and the development of devices oriented to study the mechanical effects that take place during the low frequency and low power pulsing irradiation of gold nanoparticles has led to the detection of pressure waves associated to thermoelastic expansion processes, opening the door to the development of hyperthermia therapies that combine the cellular death due to the heating with the death derived from the described mechanical phenomena.
